Topological Thouless pumping in arrays of coupled spin chains

Thouless pumping is a mechanism to perform topologically protected transport of particles by adiabatically modulating the Hamiltonian. The transported current is a topological invariant that is intimately related to the integer quantum Hall effect. Most of the previous works focus on topological pumping in linear and square lattices. In this work, we theoretically propose a mechanism to perform topological pumping in arrays of spin chains with complex geometries. To achieve this, we consider an array where the spin chains are coupled through their edges, which allows to split the populations to generate superpositions of spin excitations in different spin chains. We show that due to the topological protection, the quantum superpositions can be transported through the array against the effect of disorder. This approach will open a new avenue to transport excitations and correlated states with potential applications in quantum technologies and information processing. Our ideas can be realized in state-of-the-art quantum simulators such as cold atoms and superconducting qubit arrays.

Dissipative nonequilibrium synchronization of topological edge states via self-oscillation

The interplay of synchronization and topological band structures with symmetry protected midgap states under the influence of driving and dissipation is largely unexplored. Here we consider a trimer chain of electron shuttles, each consisting of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a quantum dot positioned between two electronic leads. Each shuttle is subject to thermal dissipation and undergoes a bifurcation towards self-oscillation with a stable limit cycle if driven by a bias voltage between the leads. By mechanically coupling the oscillators together, we observe synchronized motion at the ends of the chain, which can be explained using a linear stability analysis. Due to the inversion symmetry of the trimer chain, these synchronized states are topologically protected against local disorder. Furthermore, with current experimental feasibility, the synchronized motion can be observed by measuring the dot occupation of each shuttle. Our results open a new avenue to enhance the robustness of synchronized motion by exploiting topology.

Fully-programmable universal quantum simulator with a one-dimensional quantum processor

Current quantum devices execute specific tasks that are hard for classical computers and have the potential to solve problems such as quantum simulation of material science and chemistry, even without error correction. For practical applications it is highly desirable to reconfigure the connectivity of the device, which for superconducting quantum processors is determined at fabrication. In addition, we require a careful design of control lines and couplings to resonators for measurements. Therefore, it is a cumbersome and slow undertaking to fabricate a new device for each problem we want to solve. Here we periodically drive a one-dimensional chain to engineer effective Hamiltonians that simulate arbitrary connectivities. We demonstrate the capability of our method by engineering driving sequences to simulate star, all-to-all, and ring connectivities. We also simulate a minimal example of the 3-SAT problem including three-body interactions, which are difficult to realize experimentally. Our results open a new paradigm to perform quantum simulation in near term quantum devices by enabling us to stroboscopically simulate arbitrary Hamiltonians with a single device and optimized driving sequences

Topological pumping of quantum correlations

Topological pumping and duality transformations are paradigmatic concepts in condensed matter and statistical mechanics. In this paper, we extend the concept of topological pumping of particles to topological pumping of quantum correlations. We propose a scheme to find pumping protocols for highly-correlated states by mapping them to uncorrelated ones. We show that one way to achieve this is to use dualities, because they are non-local transformations that preserve the topological properties of the system. By using them, we demonstrate that topological pumping of kinks and cluster-like excitations can be realized. We find that the entanglement of these highly-correlated excitations is strongly modified during the pumping process and the interactions enhance the robustness against disorder. Our work paves the way to explore topological pumping beyond the notion of particles and opens a new avenue to investigate the relation between correlations and topology.

Semiclassical bifurcations and topological phase transitions in a one-dimensional lattice of coupled Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models

In this work we study a one-dimensional lattice of Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models with alternating couplings between nearest-neighbors sites, which resembles the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Typical properties of the underlying models are present in our semiclassical-topological hybrid system, allowing us to investigate an interplay between semiclassical bifurcations at mean-field level and topological phases. Our results show that bifurcations of the energy landscape lead to diverse ordered quantum phases. Furthermore, the study of the quantum fluctuations around the mean field solution reveals the existence of nontrivial topological phases. These are characterized by the emergence of localized states at the edges of a chain with open boundary conditions.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions and periodic dynamics

We investigate signatures of the excited-state quantum phase transition in the periodic dynamics of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and the Tavis-Cummings model. In the thermodynamic limit, expectation values of observables in eigenstates of the system can be calculated using classical trajectories. Motivated by this, we suggest a method based on the time evolution of the finite-size system, to find singularities in observables, which arise due to the excited-state quantum phase transition.

Quantum signatures of Chimera states

Chimera states are complex spatiotemporal patterns in networks of identical oscillators, characterized by the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Here we propose to extend the phenomenon of chimera states to the quantum regime, and uncover intriguing quantum signatures of these states. We calculate the quantum fluctuations about semiclassical trajectories and demonstrate that chimera states in the quantum regime can be characterized by bosonic squeezing, weighted quantum correlations, and measures of mutual information. Our findings reveal the relation of chimera states to quantum information theory, and give promising directions for experimental realization of chimera states in quantum systems.

Quantum criticality and dynamical instability in the kicked top

We investigate precursors of critical behavior in the quasienergy spectrum due to the dynamical instability in the kicked top. Using a semiclassical approach, we analytically obtain a logarithmic divergence in the density of states, which is analogous to a continuous excited state quantum phase transition in undriven systems. We propose a protocol to observe the cusp behavior of the magnetization close to the critical quasienergy.

Quantum phase transitions in networks of Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models

We study the quantum critical behavior of networks consisting of Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models with an anisotropic ferromagnetic coupling. We focus on the low-energy properties of the system within a mean-field approach and the quantum corrections around the mean-field solution. Our results show that the weak-coupling regime corresponds to the paramagnetic phase when the local field dominates the dynamics, but the local anisotropy leads to the existence of an exponentially-degenerate ground state. In the strong-coupling regime, the ground state is twofold degenerate and possesses long-range magnetic ordering. Analytical results for a network with the ring topology are obtained.

AC-driven Quantum Phase Transition in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model under monochromatic modulation of the inter-particle interaction. We show that the external driving induces a rich phase diagram that characterizes the multistability in the system. Interestingly, the number of stable configurations can be tuned by increasing the amplitude of the driving field. Furthermore, by studying the quantum evolution, we demonstrate that the system exhibits a set of quantum phases that correspond to dynamically stabilized states.

Floquet topological quantum phase transitions in the transverse Wen-plaquette model

Our aim in this work is to study the nonequilibrium behavior of the topological quantum phase transition in the transverse Wen-plaquette model. We show that under the effect of a nonadiabatic driving the system exhibits a new topological phase and a rich phase diagram. We define generalized topological order parameters by considering cycle-averaged expectation values of string operators in a Floquet state

Nonequilibrium Quantum Phase Transitions in the Ising Model

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Ising model driven under monochromatic nonadiabatic modulation of the transverse field. We show that besides the Ising-like critical behavior, the system exhibits an anisotropic transition which is absent in equilibrium. The nonequilibrium quantum phases correspond to states which are synchronized with the external control in the long-time dynamics.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Phase Transitions in the Dicke Model

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model by considering a monochromatic nonadiabatic modulation of the atom-field coupling. For weak driving the system exhibits a set of sidebands which allow the circumvention of the no-go theorem which otherwise forbids the occurence of superradiant phase transitions. At strong driving we show that the system exhibits a rich multistable structure and exhibits both first- and second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions.

Entanglement and parametric resonance in driven quantum systems

We study the relationship between entanglement and parametric resonance in a system of two coupled time-dependent oscillators. As a measure of bipartite entanglement, we calculate the linear entropy for the reduced density operator, from which we study the entanglement dynamics. In particular, we find that the bipartite entanglement increases in time up to a maximal mixing scenario, when the set of auxiliary dynamical parameters are under parametric resonance. Moreover, we obtain a closed relationship between the correlations in the ground state, the localisation of the Wigner function in phase space, and the localisation of the wave function of the total system.
