Coherent radiation produced by a relativistic bunch of charged particles passing through a photonic crystal

The equations, which describe generation of coherent radiation by a relativistic electron bunch moving in a photonic crystal, are obtained. Spectral-angular distribution of radiation and intensity of radiation in time-domain are derived. The interaction of the bunch electrons with the electromagnetic field induced by bunch itself at the initial stage of producing coherent radiation is shown contributing to the expression for the bunch current with the terms proportional to particle acceleration (proportional to interaction time and strength of electric field induced by bunch itself) along with the terms proportional to velocity. Induced radiation produced by the relativistic bunch is considered using the quantum physics approach.

Experiments with $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons moving in a crystal at LHC in addition to EDM measurement open possibility to study electric quadrupole moment, to observe birefringence effect (spin oscillations and spin dichroism) for $Ω^{\pm}$ baryons and to get information about constants describing P-odd, T-odd effects at $Ω^{\pm}$ baryon interactions with electrons and nuclei

Pseudoscalar corrections to spin motion equation, search for electric dipole moment and muon magnetic (g-2) factor

The spin dynamics in constant electromagnetic fields is described by the Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation which can be upgraded with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments. The upgraded equation remains self-consistent, Lorentz-covariant and gauge-invariant. It and its different forms have been confirmed in numerous experiments to high degree of accuracy. We have recently derived the spin motion equation within the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin weak-field approximation which adds a pseudoscalar correction to the BMT equation. The upgraded equation is again self-consistent, Lorentz-covariant, gauge-invariant, and free of unwanted artifacts. The pseudoscalar correction is expected to be small, and might become important in hypersensitive experiments, like the measurements of electric dipole moments which are themselves related to pseudoscalar quantities. It also becomes possible to explain why EDMs are so difficult to measure, since this correction term might lead to the effective screening of electric dipole moments. Within the same model, it is possible to explain the discrepancy between experimental and theoretical values of muon magnetic anomaly under assumption that the pseudoscalar correction is the dominant source of this discrepancy.

Depolarization of high-energy neutral particles in crystals and the possibility to measure anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived hyperons

The degree of depolarization of neutral particles in crystals can reach tens of percents over the crystal length of several centimeters, which can be the basis for possible experimental application of the depolarization effect for measuring anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived neutral hyperons.

Statistical fluctuations of cooperative radiation produced by nonisochronous electrons-oscillators

Shot noise, intrinsic to the ensemble of nonisochronous electrons-oscillators, is the cause of statistical fluctuations in cooperative radiation generated by single-pass cyclotron-resonance masers (CRMs). Autophasing time --- the time required for the cooperative radiation power to peak --- is the critical parameter characterizing the dynamics of electrons-oscillators interacting via the radiation field. Shot-noise related fluctuations of the autophasing time imposes appreciable limitations on the possibility of coherent summation of electromagnetic oscillations from several single-pass CRMs. Premodulation of charged particles leads to a considerable narrowing of the autophasing time distribution function. When the number of particles $N_e$ exceeds a certain value that depends on the degree to which the particles have been premodulated, the relative root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of the autophasing time $δ_T$ changes from a logarithmic dependence on $N_e$ ($δ_T\sim1/\ln N_e$) to square-root ($δ_T\sim1/\sqrt{N_e}$). As a result, there is an increased probability of coherent summation of electromagnetic oscillations from several single-pass generators. A slight energy spread ~($\sim$4\%) results in a twofold drop of the maximum attainable power of cooperative radiation.

Statistical properties of Cherenkov and quasi-Cherenkov superradiance

We consider the effects of shot noise and particle energy spread on statistical properties of Cherenkov and quasi-Cherenkov superradiance emitted by a relativistic electron beam. In the absence of energy spread, we have found the root-mean-square deviations of both peak radiated power and instability growth time as a function of the number of particles. It is shown that energy spread can lead to a sharp drop in the radiated power of Cherenkov and quasi-Cherenkov superradiance at high currents.

Telegraph equations for the case of a waveguide with moving boundary

Telegraph equation describing the compression of electromagnetic waves in a waveguide (resonator) with moving boundary are derived. It is shown that the character of oscillations of the compressed electromagnetic field depends on the parameters of the resonator, and under certain conditions, the oscillations of voltage (current) yield the exponential growth, leading to a noticeable change in the radiation losses.

Cumulation of High-current Electron Beams: Theory and Experiment

A drastic cumulation of current density caused by electrostatic repulsion in relativistic vacuum diodes with ring-type cathodes is described theoretically and confirmed experimentally. The distinctive feature of the suggested cumulation mechanism over the conventional one, which relies on focusing a high-current beam by its own magnetic field, is a very low energy spread of electrons in the region of maximal current density that stems from a laminar flow profile of the charged-particle beam.

Diffraction of waves by screens (apertures in screens) with time-varying dimensions. Time-varying Kirchhoff's integral representation for moving boundaries

The diffraction of electromagnetic waves by screens (apertures in screens) with time-varying dimensions is studied. The generalized vector Kirchhoff's representation for this case is obtained. It is also shown that with accuracy up to the terms of the order of v/c<<1, the expressions for the scattered wave and instantaneous power can be derived from the appropriate expressions for a stationary case by substituting the time-dependent parameters of the screen dimensions (e.g. time-dependent radius) for constant parameters of screen dimensions (e.g., the screen radius) appearing in the formulas describing the stationary case.

Spin rotation and depolarization of high-energy particles in crystals at Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC) energies and the possibility to measure the anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived particles

We study the phenomena of spin rotation and depolarization of high-energy particles in crystals in the range of high energies that will be available at Hadron Collider (LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). It is shown that these phenomena can be used to measure the anomalous magnetic moments of short-lived particles in this range of energies. We also demonstrate that the phenomenon of particle spin depolarization in crystals provides a unique possibility of measuring the anomalous magnetic moment of negatively-charged particles (e.g., beauty baryons), for which the channeling effect is hampered due to far more rapid dechanneling as compared to that for positively-charged particles. Channeling of particles in either straight or bent crystals with polarized nuclei could be used for polarization and the analysis thereof of high-energy particles.

Cooperative quasi-Cherenkov radiation

We study the features of cooperative parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiation arising when initially unmodulated electron (positron) bunches pass through a crystal (natural or artificial) under the conditions of dynamical diffraction of electromagnetic waves in the presence of shot noise. A detailed numerical analysis is given for cooperative THz radiation in artificial crystals. The radiation intensity above 200~MW$/$cm$^2$ is obtained in simulations. In two- and three-wave diffraction cases, the peak intensity of cooperative radiation emitted at small and large angles to particle velocity is investigated as a function of the particle number in an electron bunch. The peak radiation intensity appeared to increase monotonically until saturation is achieved. At saturation, the shot noise causes strong fluctuations in the intensity of cooperative parametric radiation. It is shown that the duration of radiation pulses can be much longer than the particle flight time through the crystal. This enables a thorough experimental investigation of the time structure of cooperative parametric radiation generated by electron bunches available with modern accelerators. The complicated time structure of cooperative parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiation can be observed in artificial (electromagnetic, photonic) crystals in all spectral ranges (X-ray, optical, terahertz, and microwave).

Quasi-Cherenkov Radiation from Relativistic Particles Passing Through a Photonic Crystal

The expressions for spectral-angular distribution of quasi-Cherenkov radiation emitted by a relativistic particle traversing a photonic crystal are derived. It is shown that for a relativistic particle, passing through a photonic crystal formed by periodically strained threads, the intensity of quasi-Cherenkov radiation emitted at small angles to the direction of particle motion, as contrasted to ordinary Cherenkov radiation, exhibits anisotropic properties as the the photon momentum is rotated about the direction of particle motion (as the crystal is rotated about the direction of particle motion at fixed-angle observation of the outcoming photon). The intensity of quasi-Cherenkov radiation in terahertz and optical ranges is shown to be high enough to allow the experimental study of quasi-Cherenkov radiation in these frequency ranges.

Relativistic Split-Cavity Oscillator

Using the method of small signal analysis, we study the application potential of relativistic electron beams in split-cavity oscillators (SCO's). A beam-energy change in the SCO as a function of the initial energy of a relativistic beam is considered. It is shown that the small-signal analysis method enables adequate evaluation of SCO parameters needed for effective modulation of a relativistic beam in a split cavity and for HPM generation using SCO's. The range of energies is found for which the effect of self-modulation of the beam density in SCO structures is most pronounced. It is also shown that for beam currents at which the space charge has little effect on the motion of electrons in a beam, the beam in a split-cavity oscillator is effectively self-modulated at beam energies less than ~300-400 keV. The self-modulation drops sharply in the range of energies from 250 to 400 keV, but as the beam current is increased, the effective beam self-modulation becomes appreciable in this range too, as well as even in a higher energy range.

Scattering of Antiprotons by Nuclei (Atoms) in the Range of Low Energies $E\lesssim 10^5$ eV. Mirror Reflection, Diffraction, and Channeling of Antiprotons in Crystals

Studying antiproton scattering by nuclei (atoms) in the range of low energies, we found out that the increase in the antiproton-nucleus scattering amplitude through Coulomb interaction provides the possibility to investigate spin-dependent processes accompanying the interaction of antiprotons with nuclei (polarized or unpolarized) by means of mirror reflection of antiprotons from the vacuum-matter boundary, diffraction and channeling (surface diffraction and channeling) of antiprotons in crystals.

Multiple Scattering of Waves in 3D Crystals (Natural or Photonic) Formed by Anisotropically Scattering Centers

This paper considers the refraction and diffraction of waves in three-dimensional crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers. The partial wave expansion method is used to consider the effect of multiple rescattering of waves by centers composing a crystal. The expression for the refractive index of a crystal is derived. It is shown that instead of the diagonal elements of the scattering matrix $\mathbf{T}$, appearing in the expression for the refractive index of a chaotic medium, the derived expression includes the diagonal elements of the reaction matrix $\mathbf{K}$. This fact is taken into account in writing the equations describing the dynamical diffraction of waves in a crystal. The results can be of interest for research into, e.g., diffraction of cold neutrons and photons in crystals, nanocrystalline materials, as well as for the description of parametric and diffraction radiation in electromagnetic crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers.

Photon Emission from Charged Particles Moving in Undulators Placed in a Photonic Crystal

The law of photon radiation from electron beams passing through a photonic crystal in the presence of an undulator is considered. The spectral-angular distribution and the time evolution of radiation is found. It is shown that the characteristics of the radiation intensity in time demonstrate oscillations due to the interference between undulator and parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiations.

Volume Free Electron Laser - Self-Phase-Locking System

It is shown that that the Volume free electron laser is a self-phase-locking system. Equations are derived that describe both the phase-locking process and the dependence of generation on the times of bunches' entering into the VFEL resonator in the superradiation regime and for long pulses. The derived equations are applicable to the description of the stated processes in gratings formed by relativistic BWOs.

Growth of Interaction Between Antiprotons (Negative Hyperons) and Nuclei in Polarized Matter: The Possibility to Study the Spin-Dependent Part of the Forward Scattering Amplitude in the Range of Low-Energies

The influence of Coulomb interaction on the phenomenon of "optical" spin rotation of negatively charged particles (antiprotons, etc.) moving in matter with polarized nuclei is considered. It is shown that because the density of the antiproton (negative hyperon) wave function on the nucleus increases, the spin precession frequency grows as the particle decelerates. As a result, spin rotation of negatively charged particles becomes observable despite their rapid deceleration. This provides information about the spin--dependent part of the amplitude of coherent elastic zero--angle scattering in the range of low energies, where scattering experiments are practically impossible to perform.

Refraction and Diffraction of Waves in Electromagnetic (Photonic) Crystals Formed by Anisotropically Scattering Elements

Refraction and diffraction of waves in natural crystals and artificial crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers are considered. A detailed study of the electromagnetic wave refraction in a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by parallel threads is given by way of example. The expression is derived for the effective amplitude of wave scattering by a thread (in a crystal) for the case when scattering by a single thread in a vacuum is anisotropic. It is established that for a wave with orthogonal polarization, unlike a wave with parallel polarization, the index of refraction in crystals built from metallic threads can be greater than unity, and Vavilov-Chrernkov radiation becomes possible in them. The set of equations describing the dynamical diffraction of waves in crystals is derived for the case when scattering by a single center in a vacuum is anisotropic. Because a most general approach is applied to the description of the scattering process, the results thus obtained are valid for a wide range of cases without being restricted to either electromagnetic waves or crystals built from threads.

Tensor polarization of deuterons passing through matter

It is shown that the magnitude of tensor polarization of the deuteron beam, which arises owing to the spin dichroism effect, depends appreciably on the angular width of the detector that registers the deuterons transmitted through the target. Even when the angular width of the detector is much smaller than the mean square angle of multiple Coulomb scattering, the beam's tensor polarization depends noticeably on rescattering. When the angular width of the detector is much larger than the mean square angle of multiple Coulomb scattering (as well as than the characteristic angle of elastic nuclear scattering), tensor polarization is determined only by the total reaction cross sections for deuteron-nucleus interaction, and elastic scattering processes make no contribution to tensor polarization.

"Optical" Spin Rotation Phenomenon and Spin Filtering of Antiproton (Proton, Deuteron) Beams in a Pseudomagnetic Field of a Polarized Target: the Possibility of Measuring the Real Part of the Coherent Zero-angle Scattering Amplitude

It is shown that in the experiments dedicated for producing of polarized beams of antiprotons during their passage through a polarized gas target placed in a storage ring it is possible to measure not only spin-dependent total cross-sections of antiproton scattering by the proton (deuteron), but also the spin-dependent real part of the coherent zero-angle scattering amplitude in the process of production of a polarized beam of antiprotons.

The electron beam instability in a one-dimensional cylindrical photonic crystal

The radiative instability of the relativistic electron beam in a periodic dielectric-filled cylindrical waveguide is considered. The dependence of the beam instability increment on the radiated wave frequency near the region of dispersion equation roots degeneracy is studied. It is shown that sharp change in the instability of the beam under the conditions of two-wave diffraction in Compton generation regime, making the increment proportional to the fourth root from the beam density $ρ^{1/4}$ in contrast to conventional law $ρ^{1/3}$, brings radiation generation (amplification) in the considered system to be essentially improved in comparison with conventional devices (BWO, TWT, FEL etc). Numerical calculations of the instability increment for various parameters of the system are performed.

Time Dependence of the Intensity of Diffracted Radiation Produced by a Relativistic Particle Passing through a Natural or Photonic Crystal

The formulas which describe the time evolution of radiation produced by a relativistic particle moving in a crystal are derived. It is shown that the conditions are realizable under which parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiation, transition radiation, diffracted radiation of the oscillator, surface quasi-Cherenkov and Smith-Purcell radiation last considerably longer than the time of the particle flight through the crystal. The results of carried out experiments demonstrate the presence of additional radiation peak appearing after the electron beam has left the photonic crystal.

preprint2011arXiv

Time duration of the parametric x-ray radiation

Time evolution of the parametric X-Ray radiation, produced by a relativistic charged particle passing through a crystal, is studied. The most attention is given to the cases when the radiation lasts much longer (t_{PXR} ~0.1 ns) than the the time t_p of the particle flight through the crystal (t_p ~ 1 ps). It is shown that such long duration of the radiation makes possible the detailed experimental investigation of the complicated time structure of the parametric X-ray pulses, generated by electron bunches, which are available with modern acceleration facilities.

Spin rotation and oscillations for high energy particles in a crystal and possibility to measure the quadrupole moments and tensor polarizabilities of elementary particles and nuclei

It is shown that particle motion in a bent (straight) crystal is accompanied by particle spin rotation and oscillations that allows to measure the tensor electric and magnetic polarizabilities of nuclei and elementary particles. It is shown that channelling of particles in either straight or bent crystal with the polarized nuclei could be used both to analyze polarization of high energy particles and polarize them.
