Classical and Quantum Evolution in a Simple Coherent Neutrino Problem

The extraordinary neutrino flux produced in extreme astrophysical environments like the early universe, core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers may produce coherent quantum neutrino oscillations on macroscopic length scales. The Hamiltonian describing this evolution can be mapped into quantum spin models with all-to-all couplings arising from neutrino-neutrino forward scattering. To date many studies of these oscillations have been performed in a mean-field limit where the neutrinos time evolve in a product state. In this paper we examine a simple two-beam model evolving from an initial product state and compare the mean-field and many-body evolution. The symmetries in this model allow us to solve the real-time evolution for the quantum many-body system for hundreds or thousands of spins, far beyond what would be possible in a more general case with an exponential number ($2^N$) of quantum states. We compare mean-field and many-body solutions for different initial product states and ratios of one- and two-body couplings, and find that in all cases in the limit of infinite spins the mean-field (product state) and many-body solutions coincide for simple observables. This agreement can be understood as a consequence of the fact that the typical initial condition represents a very local but dense distribution about a mean energy in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian. We explore quantum information measures like entanglement entropy and purity of the many-body solutions, finding intriguing relationships between the quantum information measures and the dynamical behavior of simple physical observables.

PIONEER: Studies of Rare Pion Decays

A next-generation rare pion decay experiment, PIONEER, is strongly motivated by several inconsistencies between Standard Model (SM) predictions and data pointing towards the potential violation of lepton flavor universality. It will probe non-SM explanations of these anomalies through sensitivity to quantum effects of new particles even if their masses are at very high scales. Measurement of the charged-pion branching ratio to electrons vs. muons $R_{e/μ}$ is extremely sensitive to new physics effects. At present, the SM prediction for $R_{e/μ}$ is known to 1 part in $10^4$, which is 15 times more precise than the current experimental result. An experiment reaching the theoretical accuracy will test lepton flavor universality at an unprecedented level, probing mass scales up to the PeV range. Measurement of pion beta decay, $π^+\to π^0 e^+ ν(γ)$, with 3 to 10-fold improvement in sensitivity, will determine $V_{ud}$ in a theoretically pristine manner and test CKM unitarity, which is very important in light of the recently emerged tensions. In addition, various exotic rare decays involving sterile neutrinos and axions will be searched for with unprecedented sensitivity. The experiment design benefits from experience with the recent PIENU and PEN experiments at TRIUMF and the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). Excellent energy and time resolutions, greatly increased calorimeter depth, high-speed detector and electronics response, large solid angle coverage, and complete event reconstruction are all critical aspects of the approach. The PIONEER experiment design includes a 3$π$ sr 25 radiation length calorimeter, a segmented low gain avalanche detector stopping target, a positron tracker, and other detectors. Using intense pion beams, and state-of-the-art instrumentation and computational resources, the experiments can be performed at the PSI ring cyclotron.

Testing Lepton Flavor Universality and CKM Unitarity with Rare Pion Decays in the PIONEER experiment

The physics motivation and the conceptual design of the PIONEER experiment, a next-generation rare pion decay experiment testing lepton flavor universality and CKM unitarity, are described. Phase I of the PIONEER experiment, which was proposed and approved at Paul Scherrer Institut, aims at measuring the charged-pion branching ratio to electrons vs.\ muons, $R_{e/μ}$, 15 times more precisely than the current experimental result, reaching the precision of the Standard Model (SM) prediction at 1 part in $10^4$. Considering several inconsistencies between the SM predictions and data pointing towards the potential violation of lepton flavor universality, the PIONEER experiment will probe non-SM explanations of these anomalies through sensitivity to quantum effects of new particles up to the PeV mass scale. The later phases of the PIONEER experiment aim at improving the experimental precision of the branching ratio of pion beta decay (BRPB), $π^+\to π^0 e^+ ν(γ)$, currently at $1.036(6)\times10^{-8}$, by a factor of three (Phase II) and an order of magnitude (Phase III). Such precise measurements of BRPB will allow for tests of CKM unitarity in light of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly and the theoretically cleanest extraction of $|V_{ud}|$ at the 0.02\% level, comparable to the deduction from superallowed beta decays.

Isospin-breaking contributions to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$

We present an updated analysis of isospin-violating corrections to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the framework of chiral perturbation theory, taking advantage of the currently improved knowledge on quark masses and nonperturbative parameters. The role of the different ingredients entering into the analysis is carefully assessed. Our final result is $Ω_{\mathrm{eff}}=0.110\,{}^{+0.090}_{-0.088}$.

Isospin-Violating Contributions to $ε'/ε$

The known isospin-breaking contributions to the $K\rightarrow ππ$ amplitudes are reanalyzed, taking into account our current understanding of the quark masses and the relevant non-perturbative inputs. We present a complete numerical reappraisal of the direct CP-violating ratio $ε'/ε$, where these corrections play a quite significant role. We obtain the Standard Model prediction $\text{Re}\left(ε'/ε\right)\, =\,\left(14\,\pm\,5\right)\cdot 10^{-4}$, which is in very good agreement with the measured ratio. The uncertainty, which has been estimated conservatively, is dominated by our current ignorance about $1/N_C$-suppressed contributions to some relevant chiral-perturbation-theory low-energy constants.

Theoretical status of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$

We briefly overview the historical controversy around Standard Model predictions of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and clarify the underlying physics. A full update of this important observable is presented, with all known short- and long-distance contributions, including isospin-breaking corrections. The current Standard Model prediction, $\mathrm{Re}(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon) = (14\pm 5)\cdot 10^{-4}$, is in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured value.

Dimension-5 CP-odd operators: QCD mixing and renormalization

We study the off-shell mixing and renormalization of flavor-diagonal dimension-5 T- and P-odd operators involving quarks, gluons, and photons, including quark electric dipole and chromo-electric dipole operators. We present the renormalization matrix to one-loop in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme. We also provide a definition of the quark chromo-electric dipole operator in a regularization-independent momentum-subtraction scheme suitable for non-perturbative lattice calculations and present the matching coefficients with the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme to one-loop in perturbation theory, using both the naive dimensional regularization and 't Hooft-Veltman prescriptions for $γ_5$.

Direct and indirect constraints on CP-violating Higgs-quark and Higgs-gluon interactions

We investigate direct and indirect constraints on the complete set of anomalous CP-violating Higgs couplings to quarks and gluons originating from dimension-6 operators, by studying their signatures at the LHC and in electric dipole moments (EDMs). We show that existing uncertainties in hadronic and nuclear matrix elements have a significant impact on the interpretation of EDM experiments, and we quantify the improvements needed to fully exploit the power of EDM searches. Currently, the best bounds on the anomalous CP-violating Higgs interactions come from a combination of EDM measurements and the data from LHC Run 1. We argue that Higgs production cross section and branching ratios measurements at the LHC Run 2 will not improve the constraints significantly. On the other hand, the bounds on the couplings scale roughly linearly with EDM limits, so that future theoretical and experimental EDM developments can have a major impact in pinning down interactions of the Higgs.

Is there room for CP violation in the top-Higgs sector?

We discuss direct and indirect probes of chirality-flipping couplings of the top quark to Higgs and gauge bosons, considering both CP-conserving and CP-violating observables, in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory. In our analysis we include current and prospective constraints from collider physics, precision electroweak tests, flavor physics, and electric dipole moments (EDMs). We find that low-energy indirect probes are very competitive, even after accounting for long-distance uncertainties. In particular, EDMs put constraints on the electroweak CP-violating dipole moments of the top that are two to three orders of magnitude stronger than existing limits. The new indirect constraint on the top EDM is given by $|d_t| < 5 \cdot 10^{-20}$ e cm at $90\%$ C.L.

Kaon Decays in the Standard Model

A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in this review. The present experimental status and the prospects for future improvements are reviewed.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Precision tests of the Standard Model with leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays

We present a global analysis of leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays data, including all recent results by BNL-E865, KLOE, KTeV, ISTRA+, and NA48. Experimental results are critically reviewed and combined, taking into account theoretical (both analytical and numerical) constraints on the semileptonic kaon form factors. This analysis leads to a very accurate determination of Vus and allows us to perform several stringent tests of the Standard Model.

The < S P P > Green function and SU(3) breaking in K_{l3} decays

Using the 1/N_C expansion scheme and truncating the hadronic spectrum to the lowest-lying resonances, we match a meromorphic approximation to the < S P P > Green function onto QCD by imposing the correct large-momentum falloff, both off-shell and on the relevant hadron mass shells. In this way we determine a number of chiral low-energy constants of O(p^6), in particular the ones governing SU(3) breaking in the K_{l3} vector form factor at zero momentum transfer. The main result of our matching procedure is that the known loop contributions largely dominate the corrections of O(p^6) to f_{+}(0). We discuss the implications of our final value f_{+}^{K^0 π^-}(0)=0.984 \pm 0.012 for the extraction of V_{us} from K_{l3} decays.

Isospin Breaking in K -> Pi Pi Decays

We perform a complete analysis of isospin breaking in K -> Pi Pi amplitudes in chiral perturbation theory, including both strong isospin violation and electromagnetic corrections to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion. The unknown chiral couplings are estimated at leading order in the 1/N_c expansion. We study the impact of isospin breaking on CP conserving amplitudes and rescattering phases. In particular, we extract the effective couplings g_8 and g_27 from a fit to K -> Pi Pi branching ratios, finding small deviations from the isospin-limit case. The ratio Re(A_0)/Re(A_2) measuring the Delta I=1/2 enhancement is found to decrese from 22.1 +/- 0.1 in the isospin limit to 20.3 +/- 0.5 in the presence of isospin breaking. We also analyse the effect of isospin violation on the CP violation parameter epsilon-prime, finding a destructive interference between three different sources of isospin violation. Within the uncertainties of large-N_c estimates for the low-energy constants, the isospin violating correction for epsilon-prime is below 15%.

The pionic beta decay in chiral perturbation theory

Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons, we present an updated analysis of the pionic beta decay including all electromagnetic contributions of order e**2 p**2. We discuss the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vud| from experimental data. The method employed here is consistent with the analogous treatment of the Kl3 decays and the determination of |Vus|.
