Approximating chiral SU(3) amplitudes

We construct large-N_c motivated approximate chiral SU(3) amplitudes of next-to-next-to-leading order. The amplitudes are independent of the renormalization scale. Fitting lattice data with those amplitudes allows for the extraction of chiral coupling constants with the correct scale dependence. The differences between approximate and full amplitudes are required to be at most of the order of N^3LO contributions numerically. Applying the approximate expressions to recent lattice data for meson decay constants, we determine several chiral couplings with good precision. In particular, we obtain a value for F_0, the meson decay constant in the chiral SU(3) limit, that is more precise than all presently available determinations.

Kaon Decays in the Standard Model

A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in this review. The present experimental status and the prospects for future improvements are reviewed.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Isospin Breaking in K -> Pi Pi Decays

We perform a complete analysis of isospin breaking in K -> Pi Pi amplitudes in chiral perturbation theory, including both strong isospin violation and electromagnetic corrections to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion. The unknown chiral couplings are estimated at leading order in the 1/N_c expansion. We study the impact of isospin breaking on CP conserving amplitudes and rescattering phases. In particular, we extract the effective couplings g_8 and g_27 from a fit to K -> Pi Pi branching ratios, finding small deviations from the isospin-limit case. The ratio Re(A_0)/Re(A_2) measuring the Delta I=1/2 enhancement is found to decrese from 22.1 +/- 0.1 in the isospin limit to 20.3 +/- 0.5 in the presence of isospin breaking. We also analyse the effect of isospin violation on the CP violation parameter epsilon-prime, finding a destructive interference between three different sources of isospin violation. Within the uncertainties of large-N_c estimates for the low-energy constants, the isospin violating correction for epsilon-prime is below 15%.

The pionic beta decay in chiral perturbation theory

Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons, we present an updated analysis of the pionic beta decay including all electromagnetic contributions of order e**2 p**2. We discuss the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vud| from experimental data. The method employed here is consistent with the analogous treatment of the Kl3 decays and the determination of |Vus|.

3-Neutrino Mass Spectrum from Combining Seesaw and Radiative Neutrino Mass Mechanisms

We extend the Standard Model by adding a second Higgs doublet and a right-handed neutrino singlet with a heavy Majorana mass term. In this model, there are one heavy and three light Majorana neutrinos with a mass hierarchy m_3 >> m_2 >> m_1 such that that only m_3 is non-zero at the tree level and light because of the seesaw mechanism, m_2 is generated at the one-loop and m_1 at the two-loop level. We show that the atmospheric neutrino oscillations and large mixing MSW solar neutrino transitions with $Δm^2_\mathrm{atm} \simeq m_3^2$ and $Δm^2_\mathrm{solar} \simeq m_2^2$, respectively, are naturally accommodated in this model without employing any symmetry.

Chiral Perturbation Theory with Virtual Photons and Leptons

We construct a low-energy effective field theory which allows the full treatment of isospin-breaking effects in semileptonic weak interactions. To this end, we enlarge the particle spectrum of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons by including also the light leptons as dynamical degrees of freedom. Using super-heat-kernel techniques, we determine the additional one-loop divergences generated by the presence of virtual leptons and give the full list of associated local counterterms. We illustrate the use of our effective theory by applying it to the decays pi -> l nu_{l} and K -> l nu_{l}.

The Super-Heat-Kernel Expansion and the Renormalization of the Pion-Nucleon Interaction

A recently proposed super-heat-kernel technique is applied to heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with two flavours. A previous result for the one-loop divergences of the pion-nucleon system is confirmed, giving at the same time an impressive demonstration of the efficiency of the new method. The cumbersome and tedious calculations of the conventional approach are now reduced to a few simple algebraic manipulations. The present computational scheme is not restricted to chiral perturbation theory, but can easily be applied or extended to any (in general non-renormalizable) theory with boson-fermion interactions.
