Geodesic spaces of low Nagata dimension

We show that every geodesic metric space admitting an injective continuous map into the plane as well as every planar graph has Nagata dimension at most two, hence asymptotic dimension at most two. This relies on and answers a question in a very recent work by Fujiwara and Papasoglu. We conclude that all three-dimensional Hadamard manifolds have Nagata dimension three. As a consequence, all such manifolds are absolute Lipschitz retracts.

Flats in spaces with convex geodesic bicombings

In spaces of nonpositive curvature the existence of isometrically embedded flat (hyper)planes is often granted by apparently weaker conditions on large scales. We show that some such results remain valid for metric spaces with non-unique geodesic segments under suitable convexity assumptions on the distance function along distinguished geodesics. The discussion includes, among other things, the Flat Torus Theorem and Gromov's hyperbolicity criterion referring to embedded planes. This generalizes results of Bowditch for Busemann spaces.

Convex geodesic bicombings and hyperbolicity

A geodesic bicombing on a metric space selects for every pair of points a geodesic connecting them. We prove existence and uniqueness results for geodesic bicombings satisfying different convexity conditions. In combination with recent work by the second author on injective hulls, this shows that every word hyperbolic group acts geometrically on a proper, finite dimensional space X with a unique (hence equivariant) convex geodesic bicombing of the strongest type. Furthermore, the Gromov boundary of X is a Z-set in the closure of X, and the latter is a metrizable absolute retract, in analogy with the Bestvina--Mess theorem on the Rips complex.

Metric stability of trees and tight spans

In this note, we prove optimal extension results for roughly isometric relations between metric (R-)trees and injective metric spaces. This yields sharp stability estimates, in terms of the Gromov-Hausdorff (GH) distance, for certain metric spanning constructions: The GH distance of two metric trees spanned by some subsets is smaller than or equal to the GH distance of these sets. The GH distance of the injective hulls, or tight spans, of two metric spaces is at most twice the GH distance between themselves.

Injective hulls of certain discrete metric spaces and groups

Injective metric spaces, or absolute 1-Lipschitz retracts, share a number of properties with CAT(0) spaces. In the 1960es, J. R. Isbell showed that every metric space X has an injective hull E(X). Here it is proved that if X is the vertex set of a connected locally finite graph with a uniform stability property of intervals, then E(X) is a locally finite polyhedral complex with finitely many isometry types of n-cells, isometric to polytopes in l^n_\infty, for each n. This applies to a class of finitely generated groups G, including all word hyperbolic groups and abelian groups, among others. Then G acts properly on E(G) by cellular isometries, and the first barycentric subdivision of E(G) is a model for the classifying space \underbar{E}G for proper actions. If G is hyperbolic, E(G) is finite dimensional and the action is cocompact. In particular, every hyperbolic group acts properly and cocompactly on a space of non-positive curvature in a weak (but non-coarse) sense.

On Toponogov's comparison theorem for Alexandrov spaces

In this expository note, we present a transparent proof of Toponogov's theorem for Alexandrov spaces in the general case, not assuming local compactness of the underlying metric space. More precisely, we show that if M is a complete geodesic metric space such that the Alexandrov triangle comparisons for curvature greater than or equal to k are satisfied locally, then these comparisons also hold in the large. The proof is a modification of an argument due to Plaut.

The pointed flat compactness theorem for locally integral currents

Recently, a new embedding/compactness theorem for integral currents in a sequence of metric spaces has been established by the second author. We present a version of this result for locally integral currents in a sequence of pointed metric spaces. To this end we introduce another variant of the Ambrosio--Kirchheim theory of currents in metric spaces, including currents with finite mass in bounded sets.
