Charmenability and Stiffness of Arithmetic Groups

We characterize charmenability among arithmetic groups and deduce dichotomy statements pertaining normal subgroups, characters, dynamics, representations and associated operator algebras. We do this by studying the stationary dynamics on the space of characters of the amenable radical, and in particular we establish stiffness: any stationary probability measure is invariant. This generalizes a classical result of Furstenberg for dynamics on the torus. Under a higher rank assumption, we show that any action on the space of characters of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group is stiff.

Arithmeticity, Superrigidity, and Totally Geodesic Submanifolds

Let $Γ$ be a lattice in $\mathrm{SO}_0(n, 1)$. We prove that if the associated locally symmetric space contains infinitely many maximal totally geodesic subspaces of dimension at least $2$, then $Γ$ is arithmetic. This answers a question of Reid for hyperbolic $n$-manifolds and, independently, McMullen for hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We prove these results by proving a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of such lattices. The proof of our superrigidity theorem uses results on equidistribution from homogeneous dynamics and our main result also admits a formulation in that language.

Almost algebraic actions of algebraic groups and applications to algebraic representations

Let G be an algebraic group over a complete separable valued field k. We discuss the dynamics of the G-action on spaces of probability measures on algebraic G-varieties. We show that the stabilizers of measures are almost algebraic and the orbits are separated by open invariant sets. We discuss various applications, including existence results for algebraic representations of amenable ergodic actions. The latter provides an essential technical step in the recent generalization of Margulis-Zimmer super-rigidity phenomenon due to Bader and Furman.

Coarse equivalence and topological couplings of locally compact groups

A result due to M. Gromov states that any two finitely generated groups Γ and Λ are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit a topological coupling, i.e., a commuting pair of proper continuous cocompact actions $Γ\curvearrowright X\curvearrowleft Λ$ on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This result is extended here to all (compactly generated) locally compact second countable groups.

Boundary unitary representations - right-angled hyperbolic buildings

We study the unitary boundary representation of a strongly transitive group acting on a right-angled hyperbolic building. We show its irreducibility. We do so by associating to such a representation a representation of a certain Hecke algebra, which is a deformation of the classical representation of a hyperbolic reflection group. We show that the associated Hecke algebra representation is irreducible.

Algebraic Representations of Ergodic Actions and Super-Rigidity

We revisit Margulis-Zimmer Super-Rigidity and provide some generalizations. In particular we obtain super-rigidity results for lattices in higher-rank groups or product of groups, targeting at algebraic groups over arbitrary fields with absolute values. We also obtain cocycle super-rigidity results for a wide class of groups with respect to mixing actions. Our approach is based on a systematic study of algebraic representations of ergodic actions.

Amenable Invariant Random Subgroups

We show that an amenable Invariant Random Subgroup of a locally compact second countable group lives in the amenable radical. This answers a question raised in the introduction of the paper "Kesten's Theorem for Invariant Random Subgroup" by Abert, Glasner and Virag. We also consider, in the opposite direction, property (T), and prove a similar statement for this property. The Appendix by Phillip Wesolek proves that the set of amenable subgroups is a Borel subset in the Chabauty topology.

Cohomology of deformations

In this article we study cohomology of a group with coefficients in representations on Banach spaces and its stability under deformations. We show that small, metric deformations of the representation preserve vanishing of cohomology. As applications we obtain deformation theorems for fixed point properties on Banach spaces. In particular, our results yield fixed point theorems for affine actions in which the linear part is not uniformly bounded. Our proofs are effective and allow for quantitative estimates.

On the cohomology of weakly almost periodic group representations

We initiate a study of cohomological aspects of weakly almost periodic group representations on Banach spaces, in particular, isometric representations on reflexive Banach spaces. Using the Ryll-Nardzewski fixed point Theorem, we prove a vanishing result for the restriction map (with respect to a subgroup) in the reduced cohomology of weakly periodic representations. Combined with the Alaoglu-Birkhoff decomposition theorem, this generalizes and complements theorems on continuous group cohomology by several authors.

Integrable measure equivalence and rigidity of hyperbolic lattices

We study rigidity properties of lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 and of surface groups in the context of (integrable) measure equivalence. The results for lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 are generalizations of Mostow rigidity; they include a cocycle version of strong rigidity and an integrable measure equivalence classification. Despite the lack of Mostow rigidity for n=2 we show that cocompact lattices in SL(2,R) allow a similar integrable measure equivalence classification.

On some geometric representations of GL(n,O)

We study a family of complex representations of the group GL(n,O), where O is the ring of integers of a non-archimedean local field F. These representations occur in the restriction of the Grassmann representation of GL(n,F) to its maximal compact subgroup GL(n,O). We compute explicitly the transition matrix between a geometric basis of the Hecke algebra associated with the representation and an algebraic basis which consists of its minimal idempotents. The transition matrix involves combinatorial invariants of lattices of submodules of finite O-modules. The idempotents are p-adic analogs of the multivariable Jacobi polynomials.

Rigidity of group actions on homogeneous spaces, III

Consider homogeneous G/H and G/F, for an S-algebraic group G. A lattice Γ acts on the left strictly conservatively. The following rigidity results are obtained: morphisms, factors and joinings defined apriori only in the measurable category are in fact algebraically constrained. Arguing in an elementary fashion we manage to classify all the measurable Φ commuting with the Γ-action: assuming ergodicity, we find they are algebraically defined.

Boundaries, Weyl groups, and Superrigidity

This note describes a unified approach to several superrigidity results, old and new, concerning representations of lattices into simple algebraic groups over local fields. For an arbitrary group $Γ$ and a $Γ$-boundary $B$ we associate certain generalized Weyl group $W_{Γ,B}$ and show that any representation with a Zariski dense unbounded image in a simple algebraic group, $ρ:Γ\to \mathbf{H}$, defines a special homomorphism $W_{Γ,B}\to {\rm Weyl}(\mathbf{H})$. This general fact allows to deduce the aforementioned superrigidity results.

Efficient subdivision in hyperbolic groups and applications

We identify the images of the comparision maps from ordinary homology and Sobolev homology, respectively, to the $l^1$-homology of a word-hyperbolic group with coefficients in complete normed modules. The underlying idea is that there is a subdivision procedure for singular chains in negatively curved spaces that is much more efficient (in terms of the $l^1$-norm) than barycentric subdivision. The results of this paper are an important ingredient in a forthcoming proof of the authors that hyperbolic lattices in dimension at least 3 are rigid with respect to integrable measure equivalence. Moreover, we prove a proportionality principle for the simplicial volume of negatively curved manifolds with regard to integrable measure equivalence.
