Complex vortex-antivortex dynamics in the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$

We report on the investigation of the magnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ based on muon-spin spectroscopy and ac magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) measurements. The dependence of the internal field at the muon site on temperature is indicative of a ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments and only the conventional magnon scattering governs the longitudinal relaxation rate at low temperatures. At the same time, we observe a rich phenomenology for the imaginary component of the susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}$ by means of both standard ac susceptibility and a novel technique based on a microwave coplanar waveguide resonator. In particular, we detect activated trends for several features in $χ^{\prime\prime}$ over frequencies spanning ten orders of magnitude. We interpret our results in terms of the complex dynamics of vortices and antivortices influenced by the underlying structure of magnetic domains.

Suppression of Superconductivity in Heavy-ion Irradiated 2H-NbSe2 Caused by Negative Pressure

Effects of columnar defects created by 320 MeV Au irradiation on 2H-NbSe2 single crystals with a dose equivalent matching field up to 16 T were studied. Critical temperature is found to be suppressed almost linearly at a rate of 0.07 K/T. At the same time, the lattice parameters a and c are found to be expanded at rates of 0.016%/T and 0.030%/T, respectively. Such a lattice expansion should work as negative pressure to affect Tc. By separating the effect of heavy-ion irradiation on Tc suppression through lattice expansion and disorder, it is found that Tc is suppressed more by lattice expansion rather than by disorder.

Effect of controlled artificial disorder on the magnetic properties of EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x }$)$_2$ ferromagnetic superconductor

Static (DC) and dynamic (AC, at 14 MHz and 8 GHz) magnetic susceptibilities of single crystals of a ferromagnetic superconductor, $\textrm{EuFe}_{2}(\textrm{As}_{1-x}\textrm{P}_{x})_{2}$ (x = 0.23), were measured in pristine state and after different doses of 2.5 MeV electron or 3.5 MeV proton irradiation. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}(H)$, shows an extraordinarily large decrease. It starts at $T_{c}(H=0)\approx24\:\textrm{K}$ in the pristine sample for both AC and DC measurements, but moves to almost half of that value after moderate irradiation dose. Our results suggest that in $\textrm{EuFe}_{2}(\textrm{As}_{1-x}\textrm{P}_{x})_{2}$ superconductivity is affected by local-moment ferromagnetism mostly via the spontaneous internal magnetic fields induced by the FM subsystem. Another mechanism is revealed upon irradiation where magnetic defects created in ordered $\text{Eu}^{2+}$ lattice act as efficient pairbreakers leading to a significant $T_{c}$ reduction upon irradiation compared to other 122 compounds. On the other hand, the exchange interactions seem to be weakly screened by the superconducting phase leading to a modest increase of $T_{m}$ (less than 1 K) after the irradiation drives $T_{c}$ to below $T_{m}$. The results suggest that FM and SC phases coexist microscopically in the same volume.

Achieving the depairing limit along $c$ axis in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ single crystals

We report the achieving of depairing current limit along $c$-axis in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ single crystals. A series of crystals with $T_{\rm{c}}$ ranging from 8.6 K to 13.7 K (different amount of excess Fe, $y$) were fabricated into $c$-axis bridges with a square-micrometer cross-section. The critical current density, $J_{\rm{c}}$, was directly estimated from the transport current-voltage measurements. The transport $J_{\rm{c}}$ reaches a very large value, which is about one order of magnitude larger than the depinning $J_{\rm{c}}$, but comparable to the calculated depairing $J_{\rm{c}}$ $\sim$ 2 $\times$ 10$^6$ A/cm$^2$ at 0 K, based on the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. The temperature dependence of the depairing $J_{\rm{c}}$ follows the GL-theory ($\propto$ (1-$T/T_{\rm{c}}$)$^{3/2}$) down to $\sim$ 0.83 $T_{\rm{c}}$, then increases with a reduced slope at low temperatures, which can be qualitatively described by the Kupriyanov-Lukichev theory. Our study provides a new route to understand the behavior of depairing $J_{\rm{c}}$ in iron-based superconductors in a wide temperature range.

Effects of 6 MeV proton irradiation on the vortex ensemble in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ revealed through magnetization measurements and real-space vortex imaging

The change in vortex ensemble in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$, an isovalently doped iron-based superconductor (IBS), is studied through global magnetization measurements and single vortex imaging before and after 6 MeV proton irradiation. The field dependence of the critical current density ($J_\mathrm{c}$) is analyzed through the strong pinning model, with which the pristine sample is consistent. After the irradiation, the $J_\mathrm{c}$ aberrates from the strong pinning field dependence of $B^{-5/8}$, and evolves to a weaker $B^{-1/3}$ dependence with an anomalous two-step behavior creating a cusp like feature. The cusp coincides with the field of the local minima in the normalized relaxation rate ($S$), manifested by increased pinning due to increased intervortex interactions followed by fast vortex dynamics caused by flux activation at higher fields. Furthermore, single vortex imaging reveals that while long-range triangular correlation of the Abrikosov vortex lattice is observed in pristine samples, irradiated samples exhibit a highly disordered glassy vortex state which is more densely packed with increased pinning force. These artificial defects incorporated via proton irradiation have the same pinning effect as Co doping which not only shifts the pinning force to a higher degree but also broadens its distribution, in contrast to P doping which only broadens the pinning distribution without inducing a shift. All in all, through this investigation, we provide a systematic understanding of the pinning behavior in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ through carefully controlling the defects in the system.

Effects of asymmetric splayed columnar defects on the anomalous peak effect in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

In order to enhance the critical current density ($J_c$) of superconductors, introduction of columnar defects (CDs) through swift-particle irradiation is effective. By dispersing the direction of CDs (splayed CDs), not only further enhancement of $J_c$ has been confirmed but also an anomalous peak effect (APE) in $J_c$ at a certain magnetic field determined by the irradiation dose was observed. It has been proposed that the APE arises from the suppression of kink motion and/or the effects of vortex entanglement in systems with splayed CDs. In this study, we measure $J_c$ properties of optimally K-doped Ba-122-type iron-based superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with splayed CDs that are introduced asymmetrically with respect to the $c$-axis by irradiating 2.6 GeV U ions. We discuss the significance of the average direction of splayed CDs to the APE. We also discuss the relationship between the APE and the entanglement of vortices.

Enhancement of critical current density in (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 round wires using high-pressure sintering

We fabricated (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 superconducting wires using the powder-in-tube method and hot isostatic pressing. By improving powder synthesis processes compared with previous studies, highly pure raw materials for the wire fabrication were obtained. The largest transport critical current density (Jc) reached 40 kAcm-2 at T = 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 100 kOe. This value exceeds not only the value of transport Jc of the previous (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wire but also those of all iron-based superconducting round wires. Improvements of polycrystalline powder synthesis play a key role for the enhancement of Jc. Furthermore, it was clarified that higher densification by high-pressure sintering and the texturing of grains in the core of the wire due to drawing also increased Jc effectively. Advantages of (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wires compared with (Ba,K)Fe2As2 wires are also discussed.

Fully gapped superconductivity without sign reversal in the topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

We investigate the superconducting gap function of topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. Temperature, magnetic field, and three-dimensional (3D) field-angle dependences of the specific heat prove that the superconductivity of PbTaSe$_2$ is fully-gapped, with two isotropic $s$-wave gaps. The pair-breaking effect is probed by systematically increasing non-magnetic disorders through H$^+$-irradiations. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.

Imaging the effect of drive on the low-field vortex melting phenomenon in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 single crystal

Self-field imaging of current distribution in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor is used to study the effect of drive on the low-field vortex solid to liquid melting phase transformation. At low fields, the current induced drive on the vortices aids in thermally destabilizing the vortex state thereby shifting the low field melting phase boundary. We show that the current induced drive shifts solid-liquid boundaries and prepones the vortex melting phenomenon compared to the equilibrium situation. The analysis shows that for currents above 50 mA, Joule heating effects shift the melting line while below 50 mA, an effective temperature concept for driven system viz., a drive dependent shaking temperature, explains the shift. The observation of a transformation from inhomogeneous to homogeneous current flow in the sample at low fields as a function of the driving force is reconciled via an inverse dependence of the shaking temperature on vortex velocity, which is incorporated in our analysis.

Planar pinning induced, lowering of vortex dimensionality and low field melting in a single crystal of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2

Theoretically, the vortex melting phenomenon occurs at both low and high magnetic fields at a fixed temperature. While the high field melting has been extensively investigated in high Tc cuprates, the low field melting phenomena in the presence of disorder hasn't been well explored. Using bulk magnetization measurement and high-sensitivity differential magneto-optical imaging technique, we detect a low-field vortex melting phenomenon in a single crystal of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2. The low field melting is accompanied by a significant change in local magnetization ~ 3 G, which decreases with increasing applied field. The observed vortex melting phenomena is traced on a field temperature phase diagram and which lies very close to theoretically predicted Lindemann criteria based low field melting line. Our analysis shows a Lindemann number cL = 0.14 associated with the low field melting. Imaging of low-field vortex melting features shows the process nucleates via formation of extended finger-like projections which spreads across the sample with increasing field or temperature, before entering into an interaction-dominated vortex solid phase regime. Magnetization scaling analysis shows that the dimensionality of melting vortex state is close to one. Angular dependence of bulk magnetization hysteresis loop in our sample shows the presence of extended defects. From our studies, we propose the sample contains a peculiar geometry of extended defects arranged in a plane in the sample, with these planes extending through the sample thickness. In the weak intervortex interaction limit, we argue that reduced vortex dimensionality due to pinning by these peculiar extended defect planes strongly enhances thermal fluctuations. It is these extended defects planes, which we propose are promoting low dimensional vortex melting in the pnictide system.

Effects of Iodine Annealing on Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4

Effects of iodine annealing to induce bulk superconductivity in Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 have been systematically studied by changing the molar ratio of iodine to the sample and annealing temperature. The optimal condition to induce bulk superconductivity with Tc ~14.5 K and self-field Jc(2 K) ~ 5x10^5 A/cm2 is found to be a molar ratio of iodine of 5-7 % at the annealing temperature of 400 C. Furthermore, the fact that no compounds containing iodine are detected in the crystal and a significant amount of FeTe2 is produced after the iodine annealing strongly indicate that the excess iron is consumed to form FeTe2 and iodine works as a catalyst in this process.

Effects of Pnictogen Atmosphere Annealing in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$

It has been clarified that bulk superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ can be induced by annealing in an appropriate atmosphere to remove the harmful effects of excess iron. In order to clarify the details of the annealing process, we studied the changes in the physical properties and reaction products of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ annealed in pnictogen (P, As, Sb) atmospheres. Crystals annealed in a pnictogen atmosphere show bulk superconductivity and the values of $T_{c}$ and $J_{c}$ are about $14~$K and 2-4 $\times 10{^5}~$A/cm$^2$ ($2~$K, self-field), respectively. It is also found that the reaction rate increases with the increase in the saturated vapor pressure of the pnictogen. Unexpectedly, the reaction products of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ after annealing in a P atmosphere mainly consist of FeTe$_2$. In addition, the amount of P required to obtain the optimal $T_{c}$ is much smaller than the amount of excess iron, which is similar to the case of oxygen annealing. P, oxygen, and to some extent As could serve as catalysts to form FeTe$_2$ to remove excess iron.

Electron carriers with possible Dirac-cone-like dispersion in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.14) single crystals triggered by structural transition

We report detailed study of the transport properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.14) single crystals grown by vapor transport method. 14\% S doping is found significantly suppress the structural transition from $T_s$ $\sim$ 86 K in FeSe to $\sim$ 49 K, although the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, is only slightly affected. A pronounced linear magnetoresistance (MR) is observed in both FeSe and FeSe$_{0.86}$S$_{0.14}$ single crystals, which is found to be triggered by the structural transition. The linear MR and related discussion indicate the possible existence of Dirac-cone-like state, which may come from the band shift induced by ferro-orbital order. The mobility of the Dirac-cone-like band is found to decrease after S doping. Besides, the invalid Kohler's scaling of MR is found for temperature below $T_s$ in both crystals, however the re-establishment of the Kohler's scaling at temperatures below 30 K is observed in FeSe, but not in FeSe$_{0.86}$S$_{0.14}$. All these observations above support that the orbital ordering causes the band reconstruction in FeSe, and also that the orbital ordering in FeSe is suppressed by the chemical pressure from S doping.

Enhancement of critical current densities in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 wires and tapes using HIP technique

(Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires and tapes are fabricated by using hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technique, and their superconducting properties are studied. In the HIP round wire, transport critical current density (Jc) at 4.2 K has achieved record-high value of 175 kA/cm2 at zero field, and exceeds 20 kA/cm2 even at 100 kOe. Improvement of polycrystalline powder synthesis may play a key role for the enhancement of Jc. In the HIP tape, even larger transport Jc of 380 kA/cm2 is realized at zero field. Based on magnetization and magneto-optical measurements, possible further enhancement of Jc is discussed.

Influence of interstitial Fe to the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ single crystals

Superconductivity (SC) with the suppression of long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is observed in the parent compounds of both iron-based and cuprate superconductors. The AFM wave vectors are bicollinear ($π$, 0) in the parent compound FeTe different from the collinear AFM order ($π$, $π$) in most iron pnictides. Study of the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ is the most direct way to investigate the competition between bicollinear AFM and SC. However, presence of interstitial Fe affects both magnetism and SC of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, which hinders the establishment of the real phase diagram. Here, we report the comparison of doping-temperature ($x$-$T$) phase diagrams for Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.43) single crystals before and after removing interstitial Fe. Without interstitial Fe, the AFM state survives only for $x$ $<$ 0.05, and bulk SC emerges from $x$ = 0.05, and does not coexist with the AFM state. The previously reported spin glass state, and the coexistence of AFM and SC may be originated from the effect of the interstitial Fe. The phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ is found to be similar to the case of the "1111" system such as LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, and is different from that of the "122" system.

Structural-transition-induced quasi two-dimensional Fermi surface in FeSe

We report detailed study of angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) with tilting angel $θ$ from $c$-axis ranging from 0$^\circ$ to 360$^\circ$ on a high-quality FeSe single crystal. A pronounced AMR with twofold symmetry is observed, which is caused by the quasi two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surface. The pronounced AMR is observed only in the orthorhombic phase, indicating that the quasi-2D Fermi surface is induced by the structural transition. Details about the influence of the multiband effect to the AMR are also discussed. Besides, the angular response of a possible Dirac-cone-like band structure is investigated by analyzing the detailed magnetoresistance at different $θ$. The obtained characteristic field ($B^*$) can be also roughly scaled in the 2D approximation, which indicates that the Dirac-cone-like state is also 2D in nature.

Critical current density, vortex dynamics, and phase diagram of FeSe single crystal

We present a comprehensive study of the vortex pinning and dynamics in a high-quality FeSe single crystal, which is free from doping introduced inhomogeneities and charged quasi-particle-scattering because of its innate superconductivity. Critical current density, $J_c$, is found to be almost isotropic, and reaches a value $\sim$ 3 $\times$ 10$^4$ A/cm$^2$ at 2 K (self-field) for both $H$ $\|$ $c$ and $ab$. The normalized magnetic relaxation rate $S$ (= $\mid$dln$M$/dln$t$$\mid$) shows a temperature insensitive plateau behavior in the intermediate temperature range with a relatively high creep rate ($S$ $\sim$ 0.02 under zero field), which is interpreted in the framework of the collective creep theory. A crossover from the elastic to plastic creep is observed, while the fish-tail effect is absent for both $H$ $\|$ $c$ and $ab$. Based on this observation, the origin of the fish-tail effect is also discussed. Combining the results of $J_c$ and $S$, vortex motion in FeSe single crystal is found to be dominated by sparse strong point-like pinning from nm-sized defects or imperfections. The weak collective pinning is also observed and proved in the form of large bundles. Besides, the vortex phase diagram of FeSe is also constructed and discussed.

Enhancement of critical current density and mechanism of vortex pinning in H$^+$-irradiated FeSe single crystal

In this report, we comprehensively study the effect of H$^+$ irradiation on the critical current density, $J_c$, and vortex pinning in FeSe single crystal. It is found that the value of $J_c$ for FeSe is enhanced more than twice after 3-MeV H$^+$ irradiation. The scaling analyses of the vortex pinning force based on the Dew-Hughes model reveal that the H$^+$ irradiation successfully introduce point pinning centers into the crystal. We also find that the vortex creep rates are strongly suppressed after irradiation. Detailed analyses of the critical current dependent pinning energy based on the collective creep theory and extend Maley's method show that the H$^+$ irradiation enhances the value of $J_c$ before the flux creep, and also reduces the size of flux bundle, which will further reduce the field dependence of $J_c$ due to vortex motion.

Evolution of superconducting and transport properties in annealed FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ (0.1 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) multiband superconductors

We investigated the superconducting and transport properties in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ (0.1 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) single crystals prepared by O$_2$-annealing. Sharp superconducting transition width observed in magnetization measurement and the small residual resistivity prove the high quality of the crystals. All the crystals manifest large, homogeneous, and isotropic critical current density \emph{J}$_c$ with self-field value over 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$ at 2 K. The large and field-robust critical current densities prove that the superconductivity in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ (0.1 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) is in bulk nature. The values of anisotropy parameter close to $T_c$ for crystals with different Se doping levels all reside in the range of 2 - 3. Hall coefficients $R_H$ keeps positive and almost constant value at high temperatures, followed by a sudden decreases before reaching $T$$_c$, which indicates that the electron-type charge carriers become dominant at low temperatures. Furthermore, the characteristic temperature for the sudden decrease in $R_H$ gradually increases with Se doping.

Bulk Superconductivity in Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 Induced by Removal of Excess Fe

Experimental evidences from transport, magnetic, and magneto-optical (MO) image measurements confirmed that arsenic (As) vapor annealing was another effective way to induce bulk superconductivity with isotropic, large, and homogenous superconducting critical current density (Jc) in Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 single crystal. Since As is an exotic and easily detectable heavy element to Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 single crystal, As vapor annealing is very advantageous for the study of annealing mechanism. Detailed micro-structural and elemental analyses exclude the possibility that intercalating or doping effect may happen in the other post-annealing methods, proving that Fe reacts with As on the surface of the crystal and the reaction itself acts as a driving force to drag excess Fe out. The removal of excess Fe results in the good superconductivity performance.

Dynamics and mechanism of oxygen annealing in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystal

Iron chalcogenide Fe(Te,Se) attracted much attention due to its simple structure, which is favorable for probing the superconducting mechanism. Its less toxic nature compared with iron arsenides is also advantageous for applications of iron-based superconductors. By intercalating spacer layers, superconducting transition temperature has been raised over 40 K. On the other hand, the presence of excess Fe is almost unavoidable in Fe(Te,Se) single crystals, which hinders the appearance of bulk superconductivity and causes strong controversies over its fundamental properties. Here we report a systematical study of O$_2$-annealing dynamics in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ by controlling the amount of O$_2$, annealing temperature, and time. Bulk superconductivity can be gradually induced by increasing the amount of O$_2$ and annealing time at suitable temperatures. The optimally annealed crystals can be easily obtained by annealing with ~ 1.5% molar ratio of oxygen at 400 $^{\circ}$C for more than 1 hour. Superconductivity was witnessed to evolve mainly from the edge of the crystal to the central part. After the optimal annealing, the complete removal of excess Fe was demonstrated via STM measurements. Some fundamental properties were recharacterized and compared with those of as-grown crystals to discuss the influence of excess Fe.

Enhancement of transport critical current density of SmFeAsO1-xFx tapes fabricated by an ex-situ powder-in-tube method with a Sn-presintering process

SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) tapes were prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube method with a Sn-presintering process. Scanning electron microscopy revealed apparent difference in microstructure between Sn-presintered tapes and the previously reported polycrystalline Sm1111 bulk, since Sn has reduced FeAs wetting phase and filled the voids between Sm1111 grains. The Sn-presintered tapes showed significant enhanced field dependences of transport Jc compared with Sn-added tapes. A highest transport critical current density (Jc) of 3.45x10^4 A cm-2 at 4.2 K and self-field is achieved. Magneto-optical (MO) imaging further confirmed large and well-distributed global and intergranular Jc in Sn-presintered Sm1111 tapes.

Magneto-optical characterizations of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ thin films with critical current density over 1 MA/cm$^2$

We performed magneto-optical (MO) measurements on FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ thin films grown on LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) single-crystalline substrates. These thin films show superconducting transition temperature, ${T_c}$ $\sim$ 19 K, 4 K higher than the bulk sample. Typical roof-top patterns can be observed in the MO images of thin films grown on LAO and YSZ, from which a large and homogeneous critical current density, ${J_c}$, over 1 $\times$ 10$^6$ A/cm$^2$ at 5 K was obtained. Magnetic flux penetration measurement reveals that the current is almost isotropically distributed in the two thin films. Compared with bulk crystals, FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ thin film demonstrates not only higher ${T_c}$, but also much larger ${J_c}$, which is attractive for applications.

Bulk Superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ Induced by Annealing in Se and S Vapor

We reported that bulk superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ can be induced by annealing in Se and S vapor. The well-annealed samples show a large critical current density, emph{J}$_c$ $\sim$ 2 - 4 $\times$ 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$. Combined with our previous reports about O$_2$ and Te annealing effects, we proved that bulk superconductivity can be successfully induced in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ by annealing in atmosphere of all chalcogens, such as O, S, Se and Te.

Enhancement of Critical Current Densities in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 by 320 MeV Au Irradiation in Single Crystals and by High-Pressure Sintering in PIT Wires

We demonstrate a large enhancement of critical current density (Jc) up to 1.0x10^7 A/cm2 at 5 K under self-field in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals by irradiating 320 MeV Au ions. With the very promising potential of this material in mind, we have fabricated a (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire through a powder-in-tube method combined with the hot isostatic pressing technique, whose effectiveness has been proven in industrial Bi2223 tapes. The Jc in the wire at 4.2 K has reached 37 kA/cm2 under self-field and 3.0 kA/cm2 at 90 kOe. Magneto-optical imaging of the wire confirmed the large intergranular Jc in the wire core.

Evolution of Superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ Annealed in Te Vapor

We report a detailed study of the Te vapor annealing effect in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals. Bulk superconductivity can be gradually induced by annealing with increasing amount of Te, until the molar ratio of Te to the sample reaches 1 : 10. By further increasing Te molar ratio, superconducting volume is gradually reduced. Resistivity and Hall effect measurements manifest that annealing in Te vapor delocalizes the charge carriers by removing excess Fe. The optimally Te annealed crystal shows homogeneous critical current densities with a large value of $\sim$ 4.3 $\times$ 10$^5$ A/cm$^2$, which proves that the Te annealing is effective to induce bulk superconductivity in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$.

Large, Homogeneous, and Isotropic Critical Current Density in Oxygen-Annealed Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 Single Crystal

We reported a controllable way of removing excess Fe in Fe1+yTe0.6Se0.4 by annealing in a fixed amount of O2. Compared with the weak superconductivity induced by dilute acids, O2 annealing can successfully induce bulk superconductivity. Proper O2 annealing changes the temperature dependence of resistivity at low temperatures from semiconducting to metallic, which comes from the deintercalation of excess Fe. Critical current densities with field along the c-axis and ab-plane are found almost isotropic with large values of 3*10^5 A/cm2 and 2.5*10^5 A/cm2 at 2 K. Furthermore, magneto-optical images reveal isotropic current flow within the ab-plane.

Magnetic relaxation and collective vortex creep in FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystal

We study the vortex dynamics in high-quality FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystal by performing magnetization measurements of the screening current density \emph{J}$_s$ and flux creep rate \emph{S}. Temperature dependence of \emph{S} shows a plateau in the intermediate temperature region with a high creep rate $\sim$ 0.03, which is interpreted in the framework of the collective creep theory. A crossover from elastic to plastic creep is observed. The glassy exponent and barrier height for flux creep are directly determined by extended Maley's method. \emph{J}$_s$ with flux creep, obtained from magnetic hysteresis loops, is successfully reproduced based on the collective creep analysis. We also approach critical current density without flux creep by means of the generalized inversion scheme, which proves that the $δ$\emph{l} and $δ$\emph{T}$_c$ pinning coexist in FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystal.

Specific Heat and Upper Critical Field of Sc5Ir4Si10 Superconductor

Temperature and magnetic field dependent specific heat of textured Sc5Ir4Si10 superconductor was investigated in detail. Based on the fitting of zero-field electronic specific heat by different gap structures as well as the discussion on field-induced specific heat coefficient, Sc5Ir4Si10 is proved to be an anisotropic s-wave superconductor with a gap anisotropy of 0.53. The anisotropy of upper critical field suggests the weakly one-dimensional Fermi surface, and the value is consistent with the gap anisotropy result obtained from the specific heat data.

Anisotropies and Homogeneities of Superconducting Properties in Iron-Platinum-Arsenide Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe1.79Pt0.21As2)5

We report a study on the anisotropy of superconducting properties in single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-δAs8)(Fe1.79Pt0.21As2)5 with Tc ~13.6 K. Under a field of 5 Oe, the sample reaches fully-diamagnetic state at ~10 K for H//c, and ~8 K for H//ab, indicating the presence of slight inhomogeneities. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail effect in the hysteresis loop for both H//c and H//ab. Averaged critical current densities at low magnetic fields along the c-axis and ab-plane Jc(H//c) and Jc(H//ab) at 5 K are estimated to be 0.9*10^5 and 0.7*10^5 A/cm2, respectively. Resistive transitions under magnetic field show broadening, which is consistent with a relatively large anisotropy of upper critical field. Enhancement of critical current density and vortex activation energy in proton-irradiated Co-doped BaFe2As2

The effect of proton irradiation in Ba(Fe0.93Co0.07)2As2 single crystals is reported. We analyze temperature dependence of current density and normalized flux relaxation rate in the framework of collective creep model. Glassy exponent and barrier height for flux creep are directly determined by Maley's method. Our model functions for barrier height and critical current density in the absence of flux creep are explained by the superposition of \deltaTc- and \deltal-pinning. We also approach true critical current density by means of generalized inversion scheme, and the obtained result is in reasonable agreement with our model function. Proton irradiation effect on temperature dependence of current density and normalized relaxation rate can be summarized as doubling of barrier height at the beginning of flux creep.

Growth and characterization of n-type electron-induced ferromagnetic semiconductor (In,Fe)As

We show that by introducing isoelectronic iron (Fe) magnetic impurities and Beryllium (Be) double-donor atoms into InAs, it is possible to grow a n-type ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) with the ability to control ferromagnetism by both Fe and independent carrier doping by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. We demonstrate that (In,Fe)As doped with electrons behaves as an n-type electron-induced FMS. This achievement opens the way to realize novel spin-devices such as spin light-emitting diodes or spin field-effect transistors, as well as helps understand the mechanism of carrier-mediated ferromagnetism in FMSs.

Magnetic and transport properties of iron-platinum arsenide Ca10(Pt4-δAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 single crystal

We report superconducting properties of single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-δAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 by X-ray diffraction, magnetization, resistivity, and magneto-optical imaging measurements. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop and relatively high critical current density Jc ~ 0.8\times105 A/cm2 at low temperatures. The exponential temperature dependence of Jc, which arises from nonlinear effective flux-creep activation energy, has been observed. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition shows a relatively large anisotropy. The magneto-optical images reveal homogenous current flow within the crystal.

Superconducting properties and magneto-optical imaging of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 PIT wires with Ag addition

We have fabricated (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires through ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Silver was used as a chemical addition to improve the performance of these superconducting wires. The transport critical current densities (Jc) have reached 1.3\times104 A/cm and 1.0\times104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K under self field in the wires with and without Ag addition. We used magneto-optical (MO) imaging technique to investigate the properties of grain boundaries in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire with Ag addition. MO images show the weak links in the Fe-based superconducting wires for the first time. An intragranular Jc of 6.0\times104 A/cm2 at 20 K is obtained from MO image, which is consistent with the estimation from M-H measurement.

Instability of vortex-antivortex interface in optimally-doped Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}

We explore the flux front patterns during virgin penetration and after remagnetization in the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}. After remagnetization we observe an instability characterized by turbulent dynamics at the vortex-antivortex boundary. Associated with the turbulent flux boundary a band of excess current density is observed. The turbulence is contrasted with the instability observed in the cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest turbulent instability at the vortex-antivortex interface may be a common feature in all remagnetized type-II superconductors.

Lamellar mesophase nucleated by Josephson vortices at the melting of the vortex lattice in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}$

The local effect of the Josephson vortices on the vortex lattice melting process in \BSCCO crystals in the presence of an in-plane field $H_{ab}$ is studied by differential magneto-optical imaging. The melting process is found to commence along the Josephson vortex stacks, forming a mesomorphic phase of periodic liquid and solid lamellas, the direction and spacing of which are controlled by $H_{ab}$. The reduction of the local melting field $H_m$ along the Josephson vortex stacks is more than an order of magnitude larger than the reduction of the average bulk $H_m$ by $H_{ab}$.

Low-temperature Synthesis of FeTe0.5Se0.5 Polycrystals with a High Transport Critical Current Density

We have prepared high-quality polycrystalline FeTe0.5Se0.5 at temperature as low as 550°C. The transport critical current density evaluated by the current-voltage characteristics is over 700 A/cm2 at 4.2 K under zero field, which is several times larger than FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires. The critical current density estimated from magneto-optical images of flux penetration is also similar to this value. The upper critical field of the polycrystalline FeTe0.5Se0.5 at T = 0 K estimated by Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theory is 585 kOe, which is comparable to that of single crystals. This study gives some insight into how to improve the performance of FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires.

Transport and magnetic properties of Co-doped BaFe_{2}As_{2} epitaxial thin films

We report resistivity, Hall coefficient, current-voltage characteristics, and magneto-optical imaging measurements of epitaxial Co-doped BaFe_{2}As_{2} thin films deposited on MgO(001) substrate. The Hall resistivity of the films has a substantial contribution arising from anomalous Hall effect of ferromagnetic components. The critical current density (J_{c}) of the films is ~2 MA/cm^{2} at low temperatures. Differential magneto-optical images of the remanent state give similar J_{c} values and also exhibit presence of extended defects in the film.

Where does the transport current flow in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 crystals?

A new measurement technique for investigation of vortex dynamics is introduced. The distribution of the transport current across a crystal is derived by a sensitive measurement of the self-induced magnetic field of the transport current. We are able to clearly mark where the flow of the transport current is characterized by bulk pinning, surface barrier, or a uniform current distribution. One of the novel results is that in BSCCO crystals most of the vortex liquid phase is affected by surface barriers resulting in a thermally activated apparent resistivity. As a result the standard transport measurements in BSCCO do not probe the dynamics of vortices in the bulk, but rather measure surface barrier properties.
