Distance Domains: Continuity

We take the abstract basis approach to classical domain theory and extend it to quantitative domains. In doing so, we provide dual characterisations of distance domains (some new even in the classical case) as well as unifying and extending previous formal ball dualities, namely the Kostanek-Waszkiewicz and Romaguero-Valero theorems. In passing, we also characterise hemimetric spaces that admit a hemimetric Smyth completion.

Reconstructing Etale Groupoids from Semigroups

We unify various étale groupoid reconstruction theorems such as: 1) Kumjian-Renault's reconstruction from a groupoid C*-algebra. 2) Exel's reconstruction from an ample inverse semigroup. 3) Steinberg's reconstruction from a groupoid ring. 4) Choi-Gardella-Thiel's reconstruction from a groupoid L^p-algebra. We do this by working with certain bumpy semigroups S of functions defined on an étale groupoid G. The semigroup structure of S together with the diagonal subsemigroup D then yields a natural domination relation < on S. The groupoid of <-ultrafilters is then isomorphic to the original groupoid G.

Annihilators and Type Decomposition in C*-Algebras

We initiate the study of annihilators in C*-algebras, showing that they are, in many ways, the best C*-algebra analogs of projections in von Neumann algebras. Using them, we obtain a type decomposition for arbitrary C*-algebras that is symmetric and completely consistent with the classical von Neumann algebra type decomposition. We also show that annihilators admit a very simple notion of equivalence that is again completely consistent with the notion of Murray-von Neumann equivalence in von Neumann algebras, sharing many of its general order theoretic properties.

MAD Families of Projections on l^2 and Real-Valued Functions on Omega

Two sets are said to be almost disjoint if their intersection is finite. Almost disjoint subsets of [omega]^omega and omega^omega have been studied for quite some time. In particular, the cardinal invariants a and a_e, defined to be the minimum cardinality of a maximal infinite almost disjoint family of [omega]^omega and omega^omega respectively, are known to be consistently less than continuum. Here we examine analogs for functions in R^omega and projections on l^2, showing that they too can be consistently less than continuum.

The Order on Projections in C*-Algebras of Real Rank Zero

We prove a number of fundamental facts about the canonical order on projections in C*-algebras of real rank zero. Specifically, we show that this order is separative and that arbitrary countable collections have equivalent (in terms of their lower bounds) decreasing sequences. Under the further assumption that the order is countably downwards closed, we show how to characterize greatest lower bounds of finite collections of projections, and their existence, using the norm and spectrum of simple product expressions of the projections in question. We also characterize the points at which the canonical homomorphism to the Calkin algebra preserves least upper bounds of countable collections of projections, namely that this occurs precisely when the span of the corresponding subspaces is closed.
