A Dichotomy for Inverse-Semigroup Crossed Products via Dynamical Cuntz Semigroups

We characterise stable finiteness and pure infiniteness of the essential crossed product of a C*-algebra by an action of an inverse semigroup. Under additional assumptions, we prove a stably finite / purely infinite dichotomy. Our main technique is the development, using an induced action, of a ''dynamical Cuntz semigroup'' that is a subquotient of the usual Cuntz semigroup. We prove that the essential crossed product is stably finite / purely infinite if and only if the dynamical Cuntz semigroup admits / does not admit a nontrivial state. Indeed, a retract of our dynamical Cuntz semigroup suffices to prove the dichotomy. Our results generalise those by Rainone on crossed products of groups acting by automorphisms of a C*-algebra, and we recover results by Kwaśniewski--Meyer--Prasad on C*-algebras of non-Hausdorff groupoids.

Representing topological full groups in Steinberg algebras and C*-algebras

We study the natural representation of the topological full group of an ample Hausdorff groupoid in the groupoid's complex Steinberg algebra and in its full and reduced C*-algebras. We characterise precisely when this representation is injective and show that it is rarely surjective. We then restrict our attention to discrete groupoids, which provide unexpected insight into the behaviour of the representation of the topological full group in the full and reduced groupoid C*-algebras. We show that the image of the representation is not dense in the full groupoid C*-algebra unless the groupoid is a group, and we provide an example showing that the image of the representation may still be dense in the reduced groupoid C*-algebra even when the groupoid is not a group.

A Steinberg algebra approach to étale groupoid C*-algebras

We construct the full and reduced C*-algebras of an ample groupoid from its complex Steinberg algebra. We also show that our construction gives the same C*-algebras as the standard constructions. In the last section, we consider an arbitrary locally compact, second-countable, étale groupoid, possibly non-Hausdorff. Using the techniques developed for Steinberg algebras, we show that every $*$-homomorphism from Connes' space of functions to $B(\mathcal{H})$ is automatically I-norm bounded. Previously, this was only known for Hausdorff groupoids.

Filtering germs: Groupoids associated to inverse semigroups

We investigate various groupoids associated to an arbitrary inverse semigroup with zero. We show that the groupoid of filters with respect to the natural partial order is isomorphic to the groupoid of germs arising from the standard action of the inverse semigroup on the space of idempotent filters. We also investigate the restriction of this isomorphism to the groupoid of tight filters and to the groupoid of ultrafilters.

Reconstruction of twisted Steinberg algebras

We show how to recover a discrete twist over an ample Hausdorff groupoid from a pair consisting of an algebra and what we call a quasi-Cartan subalgebra. We identify precisely which twists arise in this way (namely, those that satisfy the local bisection hypothesis), and we prove that the assignment of twisted Steinberg algebras to such twists and our construction of a twist from a quasi-Cartan pair are mutually inverse. We identify the algebraic pairs that correspond to effective groupoids and to principal groupoids. We also indicate the scope of our results by identifying large classes of twists for which the local bisection hypothesis holds automatically.

Twisted Steinberg algebras

We introduce twisted Steinberg algebras over a commutative unital ring $R$. These generalise Steinberg algebras and are a purely algebraic analogue of Renault's twisted groupoid C*-algebras. In particular, for each ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ and each locally constant $2$-cocycle $σ$ on $G$ taking values in the units $R^\times$, we study the algebra $A_R(G,σ)$ consisting of locally constant compactly supported $R$-valued functions on $G$, with convolution and involution "twisted" by $σ$. We also introduce a "discretised" analogue of a twist $Σ$ over a Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$, and we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between locally constant $2$-cocycles on $G$ and discrete twists over $G$ admitting a continuous global section. Given a discrete twist $Σ$ arising from a locally constant $2$-cocycle $σ$ on an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$, we construct an associated twisted Steinberg algebra $A_R(G;Σ)$, and we show that it coincides with $A_R(G,σ^{-1})$. Given any discrete field $\mathbb{F}_d$, we prove a graded uniqueness theorem for $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,σ)$, and under the additional hypothesis that $G$ is effective, we prove a Cuntz--Krieger uniqueness theorem and show that simplicity of $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,σ)$ is equivalent to minimality of $G$.

Reconstructing Etale Groupoids from Semigroups

We unify various étale groupoid reconstruction theorems such as: 1) Kumjian-Renault's reconstruction from a groupoid C*-algebra. 2) Exel's reconstruction from an ample inverse semigroup. 3) Steinberg's reconstruction from a groupoid ring. 4) Choi-Gardella-Thiel's reconstruction from a groupoid L^p-algebra. We do this by working with certain bumpy semigroups S of functions defined on an étale groupoid G. The semigroup structure of S together with the diagonal subsemigroup D then yields a natural domination relation < on S. The groupoid of <-ultrafilters is then isomorphic to the original groupoid G.

A Generalised uniqueness theorem and the graded ideal structure of Steinberg algebras

Given an ample, Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, and a unital commutative ring $R$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. First we prove a uniqueness theorem for this algebra and then, when $\mathcal{G}$ is graded by a cocycle, we study graded ideals in $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. Applications are given for two classes of ample groupoids, namely those coming from actions of groups on graphs, and also to groupoids defined in terms of Boolean dynamical systems.

AF-embeddability of $2$-graph algebras and quasidiagonality of $k$-graph algebras

We characterise quasidiagonality of the $C^*$-algebra of a cofinal $k$-graph in terms of an algebraic condition involving the coordinate matrices of the graph. This result covers all simple $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. In the special case of cofinal $2$-graphs we further prove that AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality and stable finiteness of the $2$-graph algebra are all equivalent.

Cohn path algebras of higher-rank graphs

In this article, we introduce Cohn path algebras of higher-rank graphs. We prove that for a higher-rank graph $Λ$, there exists a higher-rank graph $TΛ$ such that the Cohn path algebra of $Λ$ is isomorphic to the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $TΛ$. We then use this isomorphism and properties of Kumjian-Pask algebras to study Cohn path algebras. This includes proving a uniqueness theorem for Cohn path algebras.

Ideals of Steinberg algebras of strongly effective groupoids, with applications to Leavitt path algebras

We consider the ideal structure of Steinberg algebras over a commutative ring with identity. We focus on Hausdorff groupoids that are strongly effective in the sense that their reductions to closed subspaces of their unit spaces are all effective. For such a groupoid, we completely describe the ideal lattice of the associated Steinberg algebra over any commutative ring with identity. Our results are new even for the special case of Leavitt path algebras; so we describe explicitly what they say in this context, and give two concrete examples.

Using Steinberg algebras to study decomposability of Leavitt path algebras

Given an arbitrary graph $E$ we investigate the relationship between $E$ and the groupoid $G_E$. We show that there is a lattice isomorphism between the lattice of pairs $(H, S)$, where $H$ is a hereditary and saturated set of vertices and $S$ is a set of breaking vertices {associated to $H $}, onto the lattice of open invariant subsets of $G_E^{(0)}$. We use this lattice isomorphism to characterize the decomposability of the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$, where $K$ is a field. First we find a graph condition to characterise when an open invariant subset of $G_E^{(0)}$ is closed. Then we give both a graph condition and a groupoid condition each of which is equivalent to $L_K(E)$ being decomposable {in the sense that it can be written as a direct sum of two nonzero ideals}.

Using the Steinberg algebra model to determine the center of any Leavitt path algebra

Given an arbitrary graph, we describe the center of its Leavitt path algebra over a commutative unital ring. Our proof uses the Steinberg algebra model of the Leavitt path algebra. A key ingredient is a characterization of compact open invariant subsets of the unit space of the graph groupoid in terms of the underlying graph: an open invariant subset is compact if and only if its associated hereditary and saturated set of vertices satisfies Condition (F). We also give a basis of the center. Its cardinality depends on the number of minimal compact open invariant subsets of the unit space.

Kumjian-Pask algebras of finitely-aligned higher-rank graphs

We extend the the definition of Kumjian-Pask algebras to include algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. We show that these Kumjian-Pask algebras are universally defined and have a graded uniqueness theorem. We also prove the Cuntz-Kreiger uniqueness theorem; to do this, we use a groupoid approach. As a consequence of the graded uniqueness theorem, we show that every Kumjian-Pask algebra is isomorphic to the Steinberg algebra associated to its boundary path groupoid. We then use Steinberg algebra results to prove the Cuntz-Kreiger uniqueness theorem and also to characterize simplicity and basic simplicity.

Phase transitions on the Toeplitz algebras of Baumslag-Solitar semigroups

Spielberg has recently shown that Baumslag-Solitar groups associated to pairs of positive integers are quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica. Thus they have tractable Toeplitz algebras. Each of these algebras carries a natural dynamics. Here we construct the equilibrium states (the KMS states) for these dynamics. For inverse temperatures larger than a critical value, there is a large simplex of KMS states parametrised by probability measures on the unit circle. At the critical value, and under a mild hypothesis, there is a phase transition in which this simplex collapses to a singleton. There is a further phase transition at infinity, in the sense that there are many ground states which cannot be realised as limits of KMS states with finite inverse temperatures.

Purely infinite $C^*$-algebras associated to étale groupoids

Let $G$ be a Hausdorff, étale groupoid that is minimal and topologically principal. We show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if all the nonzero positive elements of $C_0(G^0)$ are infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. If $G$ is a Hausdorff, ample groupoid, then we show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if every nonzero projection in $C_0(G^0)$ is infinite in $C^*_r(G)$. We then show how this result applies to $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. Finally, we investigate strongly purely infinite groupoid $C^*$-algebras.

Equivalent groupoids have Morita equivalent Steinberg algebras

Let $G$ and $H$ be Hausdorff ample groupoids and let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. We show that if $G$ and $H$ are equivalent in the sense of Muhly-Renault-Williams, then the associated Steinberg algebras of locally constant $R$-valued functions with compact support are Morita equivalent. We deduce that collapsing a ``collapsible subgraph" of a directed graph in the sense of Crisp and Gow does not change the Morita-equivalence class of the associated Leavitt path $R$-algebra, and therefore a number of graphical constructions which yield Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras also yield Morita equivalent Leavitt path algebras.

Kumjian-Pask algebras of locally convex higher-rank graphs

The Kumjian-Pask algebra of a higher-rank graph generalises the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We extend the definition of Kumjian-Pask algebra to row-finite higher-rank graphs $Λ$ with sources which satisfy a local-convexity condition. After proving versions of the graded-uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem, we study the Kumjian-Pask algebra of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams by studying certain finite subgraphs which are locally convex. We show that the desourcification procedure of Farthing and Webster yields a row-finite higher-rank graph $\tildeΛ$ without sources such that the Kumjian-Pask algebras of $\tildeΛ$ and $Λ$ are Morita equivalent. We then use the Morita equivalence to study the ideal structure of the Kumjian-Pask algebra of $Λ$ by pulling the appropriate results across the equivalence.

Simplicity of algebras associated to étale groupoids

We prove that the C*-algebra of a second-countable, étale, amenable groupoid is simple if and only if the groupoid is topologically principal and minimal. We also show that if G has totally disconnected unit space, then the associated complex *-algebra introduced by Steinberg is simple if and only if the interior of the isotropy subgroupoid of G is equal to the unit space and G is minimal.

A groupoid generalization of Leavitt path algebras

Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumjian-Pask algebra. We prove versions of the Cuntz-Krieger and graded uniqueness theorems for A(G).

The equivalence relations of local homeomorphisms and Fell algebras

We study the groupoid C*-algebras associated to the equivalence relation induced by a quotient map on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This C*-algebra is always a Fell algebra, and if the quotient space is Hausdorff, it is a continuous-trace algebra. We show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact, Hausdorff and principal groupoid is a Fell algebra if and only if the groupoid is one of these relations, extending a theorem of Archbold and Somerset about etale groupoids. The C*-algebras of these relations are, up to Morita equivalence, precisely the Fell algebras with trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant as recently defined by an Huef, Kumjian and Sims. We use twisted groupoid algebras to provide examples of Fell algebras with non-trivial Dixmier-Douady invariant.

The representation theory of C*-algebras associated to groupoids

Let E be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid equipped with an action of T such that G:=E/T is a principal groupoid with Haar system λ. The twisted groupoid C*-algebra C*(E;G,λ) is a quotient of the C*-algebra of E obtained by completing the space of T-equivariant functions on E. We show that C*(E;G,λ) is postliminal if and only if the orbit space of G is T_0 and that C*(E;G, λ) is liminal if and only if the orbit space is T_1. We also show that C*(E;G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if G is integrable and that C*(E;G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if G is Cartan. Let \G be a second-countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid with Haar system λand continuously varying, abelian isotropy groups. Let A be the isotropy groupoid and R := \G/A. Using the results about twisted groupoid C*-algebras, we show that the C*-algebra C*(\G, λ) has bounded trace if and only if R is integrable and that C*(\G, λ) is a Fell algebra if and only if R is Cartan. We illustrate our theorems with examples of groupoids associated to directed graphs.

Entropy and Information Causality in General Probabilistic Theories

We investigate the concept of entropy in probabilistic theories more general than quantum mechanics, with particular reference to the notion of information causality recently proposed by Pawlowski et. al. (arXiv:0905.2992). We consider two entropic quantities, which we term measurement and mixing entropy. In classical and quantum theory, they are equal, being given by the Shannon and von Neumann entropies respectively; in general, however, they are very different. In particular, while measurement entropy is easily seen to be concave, mixing entropy need not be. In fact, as we show, mixing entropy is not concave whenever the state space is a non-simplicial polytope. Thus, the condition that measurement and mixing entropies coincide is a strong constraint on possible theories. We call theories with this property monoentropic. Measurement entropy is subadditive, but not in general strongly subadditive. Equivalently, if we define the mutual information between two systems A and B by the usual formula I(A:B) = H(A) + H(B) - H(AB) where H denotes the measurement entropy and AB is a non-signaling composite of A and B, then it can happen that I(A:BC) < I(A:B). This is relevant to information causality in the sense of Pawlowski et al.: we show that any monoentropic non-signaling theory in which measurement entropy is strongly subadditive, and also satisfies a version of the Holevo bound, is informationally causal, and on the other hand we observe that Popescu-Rohrlich boxes, which violate information causality, also violate strong subadditivity. We also explore the interplay between measurement and mixing entropy and various natural conditions on theories that arise in quantum axiomatics.
