Multi-task Image Classification via Collaborative, Hierarchical Spike-and-Slab Priors

Promising results have been achieved in image classification problems by exploiting the discriminative power of sparse representations for classification (SRC). Recently, it has been shown that the use of \emph{class-specific} spike-and-slab priors in conjunction with the class-specific dictionaries from SRC is particularly effective in low training scenarios. As a logical extension, we build on this framework for multitask scenarios, wherein multiple representations of the same physical phenomena are available. We experimentally demonstrate the benefits of mining joint information from different camera views for multi-view face recognition.

Exact recoverability from dense corrupted observations via L1L_1 minimization

This paper confirms a surprising phenomenon first observed by Wright \textit{et al.} \cite{WYGSM_Face_2009_J} \cite{WM_denseError_2010_J} under different setting: given mm highly corrupted measurements y=AΩ∙x⋆+e⋆y = A_{Ω\bullet} x^{\star} + e^{\star}, where AΩ∙A_{Ω\bullet} is a submatrix whose rows are selected uniformly at random from rows of an orthogonal matrix AA and e⋆e^{\star} is an unknown sparse error vector whose nonzero entries may be unbounded, we show that with high probability ℓ1\ell_1-minimization can recover the sparse signal of interest x⋆x^{\star} exactly from only m=Cμ2k(log⁡n)2m = C μ^2 k (\log n)^2 where kk is the number of nonzero components of x⋆x^{\star} and μ=nmax⁡ijAij2μ= n \max_{ij} A_{ij}^2, even if nearly 100% of the measurements are corrupted. We further guarantee that stable recovery is possible when measurements are polluted by both gross sparse and small dense errors: y=AΩ∙x⋆+e⋆+νy = A_{Ω\bullet} x^{\star} + e^{\star}+ ν where νν is the small dense noise with bounded energy. Numerous simulation results under various settings are also presented to verify the validity of the theory as well as to illustrate the promising potential of the proposed framework.
