Anisotropic field response of specific heat for a ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe in magnetic fields

Magnetic-field-angle-resolved specific heat and magnetization measurements were conducted on a ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe with remarkable anisotropic upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Although $H_{\rm c2}$ reaches a high magnetic field ($\sim 20$~T) along the $b$ axis, it is small ($\sim~0.6$~T) when a magnetic field is applied along the magnetic easy $c$-axis. This study indicates that the specific heat is abruptly suppressed when the magnetic field is applied toward the $c$ axis from the $a$ and $b$ axes in the ferromagnetic state. The field response of density of states (DOS) is anisotropic, relative to the $c$ axis, and its angle dependence is slightly singular. The Ising-type magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnetic state is dominant even in the anisotropic reinforced superconducting state. These facts indicate that the suppression of DOS may closely relate to the superconducting state. We theoretically analyze these findings together with URhGe and UTe$_2$ by highlighting the common and distinctive features among three compounds.

SmI3: 4f5 honeycomb magnet with spin-orbital entangled Γ7 Kramers doublet

We report magnetic properties of a 4f-honeycomb iodide SmI3 made up of edge-shared network of SmI6 octahedra. High temperature magnetic susceptibility indicates Γ7 Kramers doublet ground state of Sm3+ (4f5) ions stabilized by the spin-orbit coupling and octahedral crystal electric field, which interact with Sm-I-Sm bond angle nearly 90 degree. Magnetization measurements down to 0.1 K detected antiferromagnetic correlations and an anomaly in the magnetization curve before saturation without a sign of long-range order. Relevance between SmI3 and the antiferromagnetic Kitaev material proposed in the 4f-electron system is discussed.

$^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR study of the cubic heavy fermion system Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$

We report $^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$, where antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic orders develop at low temperature. From the analysis of NQR and NMR spectra, we have determined the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors and the anisotropic Knight shift ($K$) components for both inequivalent Pd sites - Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$). The observed EFG values are in excellent agreement with our state-of-the-art DFT calculations. The principal values of the quadrupolar coupling are $(20.37 \pm 0.02)$ MHz and $(5.45 \pm 0.02)$ MHz, for the Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$) site, respectively, which is large compared to the Larmor frequency defined by the gyromagnetic constant $γ= 1.94838$ MHz/T for $^{105}$Pd. Therefore, the complete knowledge of $K$ and the EFG tensors is crucial to establish the correspondence between NMR spectra and crystallographic sites, which is needed for a complete analysis of the magnetic structure, static spin susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate data and a better understanding of the groundstate of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Field-Orientation Effect on Ferro-Quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Fully gapped superconductivity without sign reversal in the topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

We investigate the superconducting gap function of topological superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. Temperature, magnetic field, and three-dimensional (3D) field-angle dependences of the specific heat prove that the superconductivity of PbTaSe$_2$ is fully-gapped, with two isotropic $s$-wave gaps. The pair-breaking effect is probed by systematically increasing non-magnetic disorders through H$^+$-irradiations. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.

Orientation of point nodes and nonunitary triplet pairing tuned by the easy-axis magnetization in UTe2

The gap structure of a novel uranium-based superconductor UTe$_2$, situated in the vicinity of ferromagnetic quantum criticality, has been investigated via specific-heat $C(T,H,Ω)$ measurements in various field orientations. Its angular $Ω(ϕ,θ)$ variation shows a characteristic shoulder anomaly with a local minimum in $H \parallel a$ at moderate fields rotated within the $ab$ and $ac$ planes. Based on the theoretical calculations, these features can be attributed to the presence of point nodes in the superconducting gap along the $a$ direction. Under the field orientation along the easy-magnetization $a$ axis, an unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field at low fields together with a convex downward curvature in $C(H)$ were observed. These anomalous behaviors can be explained on the basis of a nonunitary triplet state model with equal-spin pairing whose $T_{\rm c}$ is tuned by the magnetization along the $a$ axis. From these results, the gap symmetry of UTe$_2$ is most likely described by a vector order parameter of $d(k)=(b + ic)(k_b + ik_c)$.

Quantum critical behaviour and Lifshitz transition in intermediate valence $α$-YbAlB$_4$

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in developing the QC.

Superconductivity in PtSbS with a Noncentrosymmetric Cubic Crystal Structure

We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic structure of ullmannite-type PtSbS, which has a cubic crystal structure without space inversion symmetry. Electrical resistivity and magnetization measured at low temperatures suggested that this compound is a bulk superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature of Tc = 0.15 K. First principles calculations indicated that Fermi surfaces of PtSbS include strongly nested hole pockets, which can make this compound interesting if they contribute to the emergence of superconductivity.

Evidence for chiral d-wave superconductivity in URu2Si2 from the field-angle variation of its specific heat

Low-energy quasiparticle (QP) excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ were investigated by specific-heat $C(T, H, ϕ, θ)$ measurements of a high-quality single crystal. The occurrence of QP excitations due to the Doppler-shift effect was detected regardless of the field direction in $C(H)$ of the present clean sample, which is in sharp contrast to a previous report. Furthermore, the polar-angle-dependent $C(θ)$ measured under a rotating magnetic field within the ac plane exhibits a shoulder-like anomaly at $θ\sim 45$ deg and a sharp dip at $θ= 90$ deg ($H \parallel a$) in the moderate-field region. These features are supported by theoretical analyses based on microscopic calculations assuming the gap symmetry of $k_z(k_x+ik_y)$, whose gap structure is characterized by a combination of a horizontal line node at the equator and point nodes at the poles. The present results have settled the previous controversy over the gap structure of URu$_2$Si$_2$ and have authenticated its chiral $d$-wave superconductivity.

Superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the heavy-fermion compound CeCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$In$_5$

The effect of off-plane impurity on superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the layered heavy-fermion compound CeCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$In$_5$ is investigated by specific heat, magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements. These measurements reveal that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T$_c$ monotonically decreases from 2.3 K (x=0) to 0.8 K (x=0.20) with increasing x, and then the SC order disappears above x=0.25. At the same time, the Ni substitution yields the NFL behavior at zero field for x=0.25, characterized by the -ln T divergence in specific heat divided by temperature, C$_p$/T, and magnetic susceptibility, M/B. The NFL behavior in magnetic fields for x=0.25 is quite similar to that seen at around the SC upper critical field in pure CeCoIn$_5$, suggesting that both compounds are governed by the same antiferromagnetic quantum criticality. The resemblance of the doping effect on the SC order among Ni- , Sn-, and Pt-substituted CeCoIn5 supports the argument that the doped carriers are primarily responsible for the breakdown of the SC order. The present investigation further reveals the quantitative differences in the trends of the suppression of superconductivity between Ce(Co,Ni)In$_5$ and the other alloys, such as the rates of decrease in T$_c$, dT$_c$/dx, and specific heat jump at T$_c$, d($Δ$C$_p$/T$_c$)/dx. We suggest that the occupied positions of the doped ions play an important role in the origin of these differences.

Thermodynamic study of gap structure and pair-breaking effect by magnetic field in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2

This paper presents the results of specific-heat and magnetization measurements, in particular their field-orientation dependence, on the first discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ ($T_{\rm c} \sim 0.6$ K). We discuss the superconducting gap structure and the origin of the anomalous pair-breaking phenomena, leading e.g., to the suppression of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$, found in the high-field region. The data show that the anomalous pair breaking becomes prominent below about 0.15 K in any field direction, but occurs closer to $H_{\rm c2}$ for $H \parallel c$. The presence of this anomaly is confirmed by the fact that the specific-heat and magnetization data satisfy standard thermodynamic relations. Concerning the gap structure, field-angle dependences of the low-temperature specific heat within the $ab$ and $ac$ planes do not show any evidence for gap nodes. From microscopic calculations in the framework of a two-band full-gap model, the power-law-like temperature dependences of $C$ and $1/T_1$, reminiscent of nodal superconductivity, have been reproduced reasonably. These facts further support multiband full-gap superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$.

$S$ = 1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain in a zinc-verdazyl complex

We successfully synthesized the zinc-verdazyl complex [Zn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V = 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], which is an ideal model compound with an $S$ = 1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain (F-AF AHC). $Ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital (MO) calculations indicate that two dominant interactions $J_{\rm{F}}$ and $J_{\rm{AF}}$ form the $S=1/2$ F-AF AHC in this compound. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetic specific heat of the compound exhibit thermally activated behavior below approximately 1 K. Furthermore, its magnetization curve is observed up to the saturation field and directly indicates a zero-field excitation gap of 0.5 T. These experimental results provide evidence for the existence of a Haldane gap. We successfully explain the results in terms of the $S=1/2$ F-AF AHC through quantum Monte Carlo calculations with $|J_{\rm{AF}}/J_{\rm{F}}|$ = 0.22. The $ab$ $initio$ MO calculations also indicate a weak AF interchain interaction $J'$ and that the coupled F-AF AHCs form a honeycomb lattice. The $J'$ dependence of the Haldane gap is calculated, and the actual value of $J'$ is determined to be less than 0.01$|J_{\rm{F}}|$.

Unstable Spin-Ice Order in the Stuffed Metallic Pyrochlore Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$

Specific heat, elastic neutron scattering, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments have been carried out on a well-characterized sample of "stuffed" (Pr-rich) Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$. Elastic neutron scattering shows the onset of long-range spin-ice "2-in/2-out" magnetic order at $T_M = 0.93$ K, with an ordered moment of 1.7(1)$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Pr ion at low temperatures. Approximate lower bounds on the correlation length and correlation time in the ordered state are 170 Å and 0.7 ns, respectively. $μ$SR experiments yield an upper bound 2.6(7) mT on the local field $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ at the muon site, which is nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than the expected dipolar field for long-range spin-ice ordering of 1.7$μ_B$ moments (120--270 mT, depending on muon site). This shortfall is due in part to splitting of the non-Kramers crystal-field ground-state doublets of near-neighbor Pr$^{3+}$ ions by the $μ^+$-induced lattice distortion. For this to be the only effect, however, $\sim$160 Pr moments out to a distance of $\sim$14 Å must be suppressed. An alternative scenario, which is consistent with the observed reduced nuclear hyperfine Schottky anomaly in the specific heat, invokes slow correlated Pr-moment fluctuations in the ordered state that average $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ on the $μ$SR time scale (${\sim}10^{-7}$ s), but are static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering experiments (${\sim}10^{-9}$ s). In this picture the dynamic muon relaxation suggests a Pr$^{3+}$ $4f$ correlation time of a few nanoseconds, which should be observable in a neutron spin echo experiment.

Field-Orientation Dependence of Low-Energy Quasiparticle Excitations in the Heavy-Electron Superconductor UBe13

Low-energy quasiparticle excitations in the superconducting (SC) state of UBe$_{13}$ were studied by means of specific-heat ($C$) measurements in a rotating field. Quite unexpectedly, the magnetic-field dependence of $C(H)$ is linear in $H$ with no angular dependence at low fields in the SC state, implying that the gap is fully open over the Fermi surfaces, in stark contrast to the previous expectation. In addition, a characteristic cubic anisotropy of $C(H)$ was observed above 2~T with a maximum (minimum) for $H$ $||$ $[001]$ ($[111]$) within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane, both in the normal as well as in the SC states. This oscillation possibly originates from the anisotropic response of the heavy quasiparticle bands, and might be a key to understand the unusual properties of UBe$_{13}$.

Fine-Tuning of Magnetic Interactions in Organic Spin Ladders

We have succeeded in synthesizing two types of new organic radical crystals 3-I-V [= 3- (3-iodophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl] and 3-Br-4-F-V [= 3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5- diphenylverdazyl]. Their crystal strucutures are found to be isomorphous to that of previously reported spin ladder 3-Cl-4-F-V. Through the quantitative analysis of their molecular arrangements and magnetic properties, we confirm that these materials form ferromagnetic chain-based spin ladders with slightly modulated magnetic interactions. These results present the first quantitative demonstration of the fine-tuning of magnetic interactions in the molecular- based materials.

Multiband superconductivity with unexpected deficiency of nodal quasiparticles in CeCu2Si2

Superconductivity in the heavy-fermion compound CeCu2Si2 is a prototypical example of Cooper pairs formed by strongly correlated electrons. For more than 30 years, it has been believed to arise from nodal d-wave pairing mediated by a magnetic glue. Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetization at low temperatures for a high-quality single crystal. Unexpectedly, the specific-heat measurements exhibit exponential decay with a two-gap feature in its temperature dependence, along with a linear dependence as a function of magnetic field and the absence of oscillations in the field angle, reminiscent of multiband full-gap superconductivity. In addition, we find anomalous behavior at high fields, attributed to a strong Pauli paramagnetic effect. A low quasiparticle density of states at low energies with a multiband Fermi-surface topology would open a new door into electron pairing in CeCu2Si2.

Possible Evolution of Antiferromagnetism in Zn-Doped Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn5

We have succeeded in growing single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCo(In1-xZnx)5 with x<=0.07. Measurements of specific heat, electrical resistivity, dc magnetization and ac susceptibility revealed that the superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc decreases from 2.25 K (x=0) to 1.8 K (x=0.05) by doping Zn into CeCoIn5. Furthermore, these measurements indicate a development of a new ordered phase below T_o ~ 2.2 K for x=>0.05, characterized by the reduced magnetization and electrical resistivity in the ordered phase, and the enhancement of specific heat at T_o. This phase transition can be also recognized by the shoulder-like anomaly seen at H_o ~ 55 kOe in the field variations of the magnetization at low temperatures, which is clearly distinguished from the superconducting critical fields Hc2=49 kOe for x=0.05 and 42 kOe for x=0.07. We suggest from these results that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is generated by doping Zn, and the interplay between the SC and AFM orders is realized in CeCo(In1-xZnx)5.

Sharp magnetization jump at the first-order superconducting transition in Sr2RuO4

The magnetization and magnetic torque of a high-quality single crystal of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ have been measured down to 0.1 K under a precise control of the magnetic-field orientation. When the magnetic field is applied exactly parallel to the $ab$ plane, a sharp magnetization jump $4πδM$ of $(0.74 \pm 0.15)$ G at the upper critical field $H_{{\rm c2},{ab}} \sim 15$ kOe with a field hysteresis of 100 Oe is observed at low temperatures, evidencing a first-order superconducting-normal transition. A strong magnetic torque appearing when $H$ is slightly tilted away from the $ab$ plane confirms an intrinsic anisotropy $\varGamma=ξ_a/ξ_c$ of as large as 60 even at 100 mK, in contrast with the observed $H_{\rm c2}$ anisotropy of $\sim 20$. The present results raise fundamental issues in both the existing spin-triplet and spin-singlet scenarios, providing, in turn, crucial hints toward the resolution of the superconducting nature of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Anomalous Field-Angle Dependence of the Specific Heat of Heavy-Fermion Superconductor UPt3

We have investigated the field-angle variation of the specific heat C(H, phi, theta) of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt3 at low temperatures T down to 50 mK, where phi and theta denote the azimuthal and polar angles of the magnetic field H, respectively. For T = 88 mK, C(H, theta=90) increases proportionally to H^{1/2} up to nearly the upper critical field Hc2, indicating the presence of line nodes. By contrast, C(H, theta=0) deviates upward from the H^{1/2} dependence for (H/Hc2)^{1/2} > 0.5. This behavior can be related to the suppression of Hc2 along the c direction, whose origin has not been resolved yet. Our data show that the unusual Hc2 limit becomes marked only when theta is smaller than 30. In order to explore the possible vertical line nodes in the gap structure, we measured the phi dependence of C in wide T and H ranges. However, we did not observe any in-plane angular oscillation of C within the accuracy of dC/C~0.5%. This result implies that field-induced excitations of the heavy quasiparticles occur isotropically with respect to phi, which is apparently contrary to the recent finding of a twofold thermal-conductivity oscillation.

Singlet-triplet Crossover in the Two-dimensional Dimer Spin System YbAl3C3

Low-temperature magnetization (M) measurements down to 0.1 K have been performed in magnetic fields up to 14.5 T for a single piece of a tiny single-crystalline sample (0.2 mg weight) of the spin-gap system YbAl3C3. At the base temperature of 0.1 K, several metamagnetic transitions were clearly observed for H // c in the range 6 T < H < 9 T whereas only two transitions were observed, one at 4.8 T and the other at 6.6 T, for H // a. At fields above 9 T, the magnetization becomes almost saturated for both H // a and H // c. The present results indicate that a singlet-triplet crossover occurs in a relatively narrow field range, suggesting a rather weak interdimer interaction in spite of the nearly triangular lattice of Yb ions.

Verification of Anisotropic s-Wave Superconducting Gap Structure in CeRu2 from Low-Temperature Field-Angle-Resolved Specific Heat Measurements

The field-angle-resolved specific heat C(T,H,phi) of the f-electron superconductor CeRu2 (Tc=6.3 K) has been measured at low temperatures down to 90 mK on two single crystals of slightly different qualities. We reveal that the C(phi) oscillation in a rotating magnetic field, originating from the gap anisotropy, diminishes at low temperatures below the characteristic field H*, as expected for an anisotropic gap without nodes. We also observe the suppression of H* by decreasing the gap anisotropy ratio $Δ_{\rm min}/Δ_{\rm max}$, a behavior that has been predicted from a microscopic theory for anisotropic s-wave superconductors. The present technique is established as a powerful tool for investigating minimum-gap structures as well as nodal structures.

Superconducting gap structure of CeIrIn5 from field-angle-resolved measurements of its specific heat

In order to identify the gap structure of CeIrIn5, we measured field-angle-resolved specific heat C(phi) by conically rotating the magnetic field H around the c axis at low temperatures down to 80 mK. We revealed that C(phi) exhibits a fourfold angular oscillation, whose amplitude decreases monotonically by tilting H out of the ab plane. Detailed microscopic calculations based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation confirm that the observed features are uniquely explained by assuming the dx2-y2-wave gap. These results strongly indicate that CeIrIn5 is a dx2-y2-wave superconductor and suggest the universal pairing mechanism in CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, and Ir).

f-Electron-Nuclear Hyperfine-Coupled Multiplets in the Unconventional Charge Order Phase of Filled Skutterudite PrRu4P12

In the unconventional f-electron-associated charge order phase of filled skutterudite PrRu4P12, the low-temperature behaviors of the triplet crystalline-electric-field ground state of Pr ions have been studied by specific heat and magnetization measurements using high quality single crystals. Specific heat shows an anomalous Schottky-type peak structure at 0.30 K in zero field in spite of the absence of any symmetry breaking. Magnetization curve at 0.06 K shows a remarkable rounding below 1 T. It has been revealed that these anomalies provide compelling evidence for the formation of a lattice of Pr 4f-electron-nuclear hyperfine-coupled multiplets, the first known thermodynamical observation of its kind.

Quantum Criticality without Tuning in the Mixed Valence Compound beta-YbAlB4

Fermi liquid theory, the standard theory of metals, has been challenged by a number of observations of anomalous metallic behavior found in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition. The breakdown of the Fermi liquid is accomplished by fine-tuning the material to a quantum critical point using a control parameter such as the magnetic field, pressure, or chemical composition. Our high precision magnetization measurements of the ultrapure f-electron based superconductor β-YbAlB4 demonstrate a scaling of its free energy indicative of zero-field quantum criticality without tuning in a metal. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid behavior takes place in a mixed-valence state, in sharp contrast with other known examples of quantum critical f-electron systems that are magnetic Kondo lattice systems with integral valence.

Absence of Meissner State and Robust Ferromagnetism in the Superconducting State of UCoGe: Possible Evidence of Spontaneous Vortex State

We report ac magnetic susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe (with superconducting and Curie temperatures of $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.5$~K and $T_{\rm Curie} \sim 2.5$~K, respectively). In the normal, ferromagnetic state ($T_{\rm SC} < T < T_{\rm Curie}$), the magnetization curve exhibits a hysteresis loop similar to that of a regular itinerant ferromagnet. Upon lowering the temperature below $T_{\rm SC}$, the spontaneous magnetization is unchanged, but the hysteresis is markedly enhanced. Even deeply inside the superconducting state, ferromagnetism is not completely shielded, and there is no Meissner region, a magnetic field region of $H < H_{\rm c1}$ (a lower critical field). From these results, we suggest that UCoGe is the first material in which ferromagnetism robustly survives in the superconducting state and a spontaneous vortex state without the Meissner state is realized.

Magnetization "Steps" on a Kagome Lattice in Volborthite

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome-like compound volborthite are studied using a high-quality polycrystalline sample. It is evidenced from magnetization and specific heat measurements that the spins on the kagome lattice still fluctuate at low temperature, down to T = 60 mK that corresponds to 1/1500 of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, exhibiting neither a conventional long-range order nor a spin gap. In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields.

Magnetic-Field Induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnons and Critical Behavior in Interacting Spin Dimer System TlCuCl$_3$

Magnetization measurements were performed to investigate the critical behavior of the field-induced magnetic ordering in gapped spin system TlCuCl$_3$. The critical density of the magnons was obtained as a function of temperature and the magnon-magnon interaction constant was evaluated. The experimental phase boundary for $T < 5$ K agrees almost perfectly with the magnon BEC theory based on the Hartree-Fock approximation with realistic dispersion relations. The phase boundary can be described by the power law $[H_{N}(T)-H_{c}] propto T^{phi}$. With decreasing fitting temperature range, the critical exponent ${phi}$ decreases and converges at $phi_{BEC} =3/2$ predicted by the magnon BEC theory.
