Entanglement Chern Number of the Kane-Mele Model with Ferromagnetism

The entanglement Chern number, the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian, is used to charac- terize the Kane-Mele model, which is a typical model of the quantum spin Hall phase with the time reversal symmetry. We first obtain the global phase diagram of the Kane-Mele model in terms of the entanglement spin Chern number, which is defined by using a spin subspace as a subspace to be traced out in preparing the entanglement Hamiltonian. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of the entanglement Chern number without the time reversal symmetry and spin conservation by extending the Kane-Mele model to include the Zeeman term. The numerical results confirm that the sum of the entanglement spin Chern number equals to the Chern number.

Section Chern number for a 3D photonic crystal and the bulk-edge correspondence

We have characterized the robust propagation modes of electromagnetic waves in helical structures by the section Chern number that is defined for a two-dimensional (2D) section of the three- dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone. The Weyl point in the photonic bands is associated with a dis- continuous jump of the section Chern number. A spatially localized Gaussian basis set is used to calculate the section Chern numbers where we have implemented the divergence-free condition on each basis function in 3D. The validity of the bulk-edge correspondence in a 3D photonic crystal is discussed in relation to the broken inversion symmetry.

Hannay Angle: Yet Another Symmetry Protected Topological Order Parameter in Classical Mechanics

Topological way of thinking now goes beyond conventional solid materials, and topological characterization of classical mechanical systems governed by Newton's equation of motion begins to attract much attention. To have a deeper insight on physical meaning of topological numbers in mechanical systems, we demonstrate the use of the Hannay angle, a classical counterpart of the Berry phase, as a symmetry protected topological order parameter. We first derive the Hannay angle using a canonical transformation that maps the Newton's equation to the Schrödinger type equation. The Hannay angle is then used to characterize a simple spring-mass model topologically with a particular focus on the bulk-edge correspondence and new aspects of the symmetry in a classical system.

Manipulation of Dirac Cones in Mechanical Graphene

Mechanical graphene, which is a spring-mass model with the honeycomb structure, is investigated. The vibration spectrum is dramatically changed by controlling only one parameter, spring tension at equilibrium. In the spectrum, there always exist Dirac cones at K- and K'-points. As the tension is modified, extra Dirac cones are created and annihilated in pairs. When the time reversal symmetry is broken by uniform rotation of the system, creation and annihilation of the Dirac cones result in a jump of the appropriately defined Chern number. Then, a flip of the propagation direction of the chiral edge modes takes place, which gives an experimental way to detect the topological transition. This is a bulk-edge correspondence of the classical system. We also demonstrate the other important concept, symmetry protection of the topological states, is at work in the classical system. For the time reversal invariant case, the topological edge modes exist for the fixed boundary condition but not for the free boundary condition. This contrast originates from the symmetry breaking at the free boundary.

Topological Order Parameters of the Spin-1/2 Dimerized Heisenberg Ladder in Magnetic Field

Topological properties of the spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg ladder are investigated focusing on the plateau phase in the magnetic field whose magnetization is half of the saturation value. Although the applied magnetic field removes most of the symmetries of the system, there is a symmetry protected topological phase supported by the spatial inversion symmetry. The Z_2 Berry phase associated with a symmetry respecting boundary and quantized into 0 and πis used as a symmetry protected topological order parameter. Edge states are also analyzed to confirm the bulk-edge correspondence. In addition, a symmetry breaking boundary is considered. Then, we observe a unique type of quantization of the Berry phase, a quantization into +-π/2 of the Berry phase. In this case, the bulk-edge correspondence is also unique, namely, there emerge "polarized" edge states for the case with +-π/2 quantization. We also evaluate the entanglement entropy by the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) to complement the Berry phase based arguments. Further, a different type of the topological order parameter is extracted from the matrix product state representation of the ground state given by the iTEBD.

Fractionally Quantized Berry Phase, Adiabatic Continuation, and Edge States

Symmetry protected quantization of the Berry phase is discussed in relation to edge states. Assuming an existence of some adiabatic process which protects quantization of the Berry phase, non trivial Berry phase $γ=\pm 2πρ$ ($ρ$ is a local filling of particles) for the bulk suggests appearance of edge states with boundaries. We have applied this generic consideration for Bloch states of some two dimensional model with massless Dirac fermions where $γ=\pmπ/2$ implies the edge states. Entanglement entropy is evaluated for the models and its relation to the bulk-edge correspondence of Dirac fermions is discussed as well.

Pressure effects and orbital characters in cuprate and carbon-based superconductors

Pressure effect is overviewed for the cuprates and carbon-based superconductors, with an emphasis on how their orbital characters are modified by pressure. For the high-Tc cuprates, we start from an observation for ambient pressure that, on top of the main orbital (dx2-y2), a hybridization with the second (dz2) orbital around the Fermi energy significantly affects Tc in the spin-fluctuation mediated pairing, where the hybridization is dominated by material parameters. We can then show that applying pressures along a, b axes enhances Tc while a c axis pressure suppresses Tc, where not only the dz2 hybridization but also Cu(4s) hybridization exert an effect. For the multi-layer cuprates, inter-layer pair hopping is suggested to be important, which may contribute to pressure effect. Pressure effect is also interesting in a recently discovered aromatic family of superconductors (picene, etc). There, we have again multi-band systems, which in this case derive from different molecular orbitals. The Fermi surface is an intriguing composite of different pockets/sheets having different dimensionalities arising from anisotropic transfers between the molecular orbitals, and pressure effects should be an important probe of these.

Symmetry Protected Quantization and Bulk-Edge Correspondence of Massless Dirac Fermions: Application to Fermionic Shastry-Sutherland Model

The fermionic Shastry-Sutherland model has a rich phase diagram, including phases with massless Dirac fermions, a quadratic band crossing point, and a pseudospin-1 Weyl fermion. Berry phases defined by the one-dimensional momentum as a parameter are quantized into 0 or pi due to the inversion symmetry combined with the time reversal, or existence of the glide plane, which also protects the massless Dirac cones with continuous parameters. This is the symmetry protected Z2 quantization. We have further demonstrated the Z2 Berry phases generically determine the existence of edge states in various phases and with different types of the boundaries as the bulk-edge correspondence of the massless Dirac fermion systems.

Investigation on synthesis and physical properties of metal doped picene solids

We report electronic structure and physical properties of metal doped picene as well as selective synthesis of the phase exhibiting 18 K superconducting transition. First, Raman scattering is used to characterize the number of electrons transferred from the dopants to picene molecules. The charge transfer leads to a softening of Raman scattering peaks, which enables us to determine the number of transferred electrons. From this we have identified that three electrons are transferred to each picene molecule in the superconducting doped-picene solids. Second, we report the pressure dependence of Tc in 7 and 18 K phases of K3picene. The 7 K phase shows a negative pressure-dependence, while the 18 K phase exhibits a positive pressure-dependence which cannot be understood with a simple phonon mechanism of BCS superconductivity. Third, we report a new synthesis method for superconducting K3picene by a solution process with monomethylamine, CH3NH2. This method enables one to prepare selectively the K3picene sample exhibiting 18 K superconducting transition. The discovery of suitable way for preparing K3picene with Tc = 18 K may facilitate clarification of the mechanism of superconductivity.

Low-Energy Effective Hamiltonian and the Surface States of Ca_3PbO

The band structure of Ca_3PbO, which possesses a three-dimensional massive Dirac electron at the Fermi energy, is investigated in detail. Analysis of the orbital weight distributions on the bands obtained in the first-principles calculation reveals that the bands crossing the Fermi energy originate from the three Pb-p orbitals and three Ca-dx2y2 orbitals. Taking these Pb-p and Ca-dx2y2 orbitals as basis wave functions, a tight-binding model is constructed. With the appropriate choice of the hopping integrals and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, the constructed model sucessfully captures important features of the band structure around the Fermi energy obtained in the first-principles calculation. By applying the suitable basis transformation and expanding the matrix elements in the series of the momentum measured from a Dirac point, the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of this model is explicitely derived and proved to be a Dirac Hamiltonain. The origin of the mass term is also discussed. It is shown that the spin-orbit coupling and the orbitals other than Pb-p and Ca-dx2y2 orbitals play important roles in making the mass term finite. Finally, the surface band structures of Ca_3PbO for several types of surfaces are investigated using the constructed tight-binding model. We find that there appear nontrivial surface states that cannot be explained as the bulk bands projected on the surface Brillouin zone. The relation to the topological insulator is also discussed.

Unexpected weak spatial variation of local density of sates induced by individual Co impurity atoms in Na(Fe{1-x}Cox)As as revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We use spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy in Na(Fe{1-x}Cox)As to investigate the impurity effect induced by Co dopants. The Co impurities are successfully identified, and the spatial distributions of local density of state at different energies around these impurities are investigated. It is found that the spectrum shows negligible spatial variation at different positions near the Co impurity, although there is a continuum of the in-gap states which lifts the zero-bias conductance to a finite value. Our results put constraints on the S+- and S++ models and sharpen the debate on the role of scattering potentials induced by the Co dopants.

Three-Dimensional Dirac Electrons at the Fermi Energy in Cubic Inverse Perovskites: Ca_3PbO and its Family

The band structure of cubic inverse perovskites, Ca_3PbO and its family, are investigated with the first-principles method. A close observation of the band structure reveals that six equivalent Dirac electrons with a very small mass exist on the line connecting the Gamma- and X-points, and at the symmetrically equivalent points in the Brillouin zone. The discovered Dirac electrons are three-dimensional and remarkably located exactly at the Fermi energy. A tight-binding model describing the low-energy band structure is also constructed and used to discuss the origin of the Dirac electrons in this material. Materials related to Ca_3PbO are also studied, and some design principles for the Dirac electrons in this series of materials are proposed.

Single Impurity Problem in Iron-Pnictide Superconductors

Single impurity problem in iron-pnictide superconductors is investigated by solving Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation in the five-orbital model, which enables us to distinguish s$_{+-}$ and s$_{++}$ superconducting states. We construct a five-orbital model suitable to BdG analysis. This model reproduces the results of random phase approximation in the uniform case. Using this model, we study the local density of states around a non-magnetic impurity and discuss the bound-state peak structure, which can be used for distinguishing s$_{+-}$ and s$_{++}$ states. A bound state with nearly zero-energy is found for the impurity potential $I\sim 1.0$ eV, while the bound state peaks stick to the gap edge in the unitary limit. Novel multiple peak structure originated from the multi-orbital nature of the iron pnictides is also found.
