Exact Spectral Statistics in Strongly Localised Circuits

Since the seminal work of Anderson, localisation has been recognised as a standard mechanism allowing quantum many-body systems to escape ergodicity. This idea acquired even more prominence in the last decade as it has been argued that localisation -- dubbed many-body localisation (MBL) in this context -- can sometimes survive local interactions in the presence of sufficiently strong disorder. A conventional signature of localisation is in the statistical properties of the spectrum -- spectral statistics -- which differ qualitatively from those in the ergodic phase. Although features of the spectral statistics are routinely used as numerical diagnostics for localisation, they have never been derived from first principles in the presence of non-trivial interactions. Here we fill this gap and provide the example of a simple class of quantum many-body systems -- which we dub strongly localised quantum circuits -- that are interacting, localised, and where the spectral statistics can be characterised exactly. Furthermore, we show that these systems exhibit a cascade of three different regimes for spectral correlations depending on the energy scale: at small, intermediate, and large scales they behave as disconnected patches of three decreasing sizes. We argue that these features appear in generic MBL systems, with the difference that only at the smallest scale they do become Poissonian.

Boundary driven $XYZ$ chain: Exact inhomogeneous triangular matrix product ansatz

We construct an explicit matrix product ansatz for the steady state of a boundary driven $XY\!Z$ spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ chain for arbitrary local polarizing channels at the chain's ends. The ansatz, where the Lax operators are written explicitly in terms of infinite-dimensional bidiagonal (triangular) site-dependent matrices, becomes exact either in the (Zeno) limit of infinite dissipation strength, or thermodynamic limit of infinite chain length. The solution is based on an extension of the newly discovered family of separable eigenstates of the model.

Exact dynamics in dual-unitary quantum circuits

We consider the class of dual-unitary quantum circuits in $1+1$ dimensions and introduce a notion of ``solvable'' matrix product states (MPSs), defined by a specific condition which allows us to tackle their time evolution analytically. We provide a classification of the latter, showing that they include certain MPSs of arbitrary bond dimension, and study analytically different aspects of their dynamics. For these initial states, we show that while any subsystem of size $\ell$ reaches infinite temperature after a time $t\propto \ell$, irrespective of the presence of conserved quantities, the light-cone of two-point correlation functions displays qualitatively different features depending on the ergodicity of the quantum circuit, defined by the behavior of infinite-temperature dynamical correlation functions. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spreading from such solvable initial states, providing a closed formula for the time evolution of the entanglement entropy of a connected block. This generalizes recent results obtained in the context of the self-dual kicked Ising model. By comparison, we also consider a family of non-solvable initial mixed states depending on one real parameter $β$, which, as $β$ is varied from zero to infinity, interpolate between the infinite temperature density matrix and arbitrary initial pure product states. We study analytically their dynamics for small values of $β$, and highlight the differences from the case of solvable MPSs.

Operator Entanglement in Local Quantum Circuits I: Chaotic Dual-Unitary Circuits

The entanglement in operator space is a well established measure for the complexity of the quantum many-body dynamics. In particular, that of local operators has recently been proposed as dynamical chaos indicator, i.e. as a quantity able to discriminate between quantum systems with integrable and chaotic dynamics. For chaotic systems the local-operator entanglement is expected to grow linearly in time, while it is expected to grow at most logarithmically in the integrable case. Here we study local-operator entanglement in dual-unitary quantum circuits, a class of "statistically solvable" quantum circuits that we recently introduced. We identify a class of "completely chaotic" dual-unitary circuits where the local-operator entanglement grows linearly and we provide a conjecture for its asymptotic behaviour which is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. Interestingly, our conjecture also predicts a "phase transition" in the slope of the local-operator entanglement when varying the parameters of the circuits.

Operator Entanglement in Local Quantum Circuits II: Solitons in Chains of Qubits

We provide exact results for the dynamics of local-operator entanglement in quantum circuits with two-dimensional wires featuring ultralocal solitons, i.e. single-site operators which, up to a phase, are simply shifted by the time evolution. We classify all circuits allowing for ultralocal solitons and show that only dual-unitary circuits can feature moving ultralocal solitons. Then, we rigorously prove that if a circuit has an ultralocal soliton moving to the left (right), the entanglement of local operators initially supported on even (odd) sites saturates to a constant value and its dynamics can be computed exactly. Importantly, this does not bound the growth of complexity in chiral circuits, where solitons move only in one direction, say to the left. Indeed, in this case we observe numerically that operators on the odd sublattice have unbounded entanglement. Finally, we present a closed-form expression for the local-operator entanglement entropies in circuits with ultralocal solitons moving in both directions. Our results hold irrespectively of integrability.

Rigorous bounds on dynamical response functions and time-translation symmetry breaking

Dynamical response functions are standard tools for probing local physics near the equilibrium. They provide information about relaxation properties after the equilibrium state is weakly perturbed. In this paper we focus on systems which break the assumption of thermalization by exhibiting persistent temporal oscillations. We provide rigorous bounds on the Fourier components of dynamical response functions in terms of extensive or local dynamical symmetries, i.e. extensive or local operators with periodic time dependence. Additionally, we discuss the effects of spatially inhomogeneous dynamical symmetries. The bounds are explicitly implemented on the example of an interacting Floquet system, specifically in the integrable Trotterization of the Heisenberg XXZ model.

Statistics of the Spectral Form Factor in the Self-Dual Kicked Ising Model

We compute the full probability distribution of the spectral form factor in the self-dual kicked Ising model by providing an exact lower bound for each moment and verifying numerically that the latter is saturated. We show that at large enough times the probability distribution agrees exactly with the prediction of Random Matrix Theory if one identifies the appropriate ensemble of random matrices. We find that this ensemble is not the circular orthogonal one - composed of symmetric random unitary matrices and associated with time-reversal-invariant evolution operators - but is an ensemble of random matrices on a more restricted symmetric space (depending on the parity of the number of sites this space is either ${Sp(N)/U(N)}$ or ${O(2N)/{O(N)\!\times\!O(N)}}$). Even if the latter ensembles yield the same averaged spectral form factor as the circular orthogonal ensemble they show substantially enhanced fluctuations. This behaviour is due to a recently identified additional anti-unitary symmetry of the self-dual kicked Ising model.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang physics in integrable rotationally symmetric dynamics on discrete space-time lattice

We introduce a deterministic SO(3) invariant dynamics of classical spins on a discrete space-time lattice and prove its complete integrability by explicitly finding a related non-constant (baxterized) solution of the set-theoretic quantum Yang-Baxter equation over the 2-sphere. Equipping the algebraic structure with the corresponding Lax operator we derive an infinite sequence of conserved quantities with local densities. The dynamics depend on a single continuous spectral parameter and reduce to a (lattice) Landau-Lifshitz model in the limit of a small parameter which corresponds to the continuous time limit. Using quasi-exact numerical simulations of deterministic dynamics and Monte Carlo sampling of initial conditions corresponding to a maximum entropy equilibrium state we determine spin-spin spatio-temporal (dynamical) correlation functions with relative accuracy of three orders of magnitude. We demonstrate that in the equilibrium state with a vanishing total magnetization the correlation function precisely follow Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling hence the spin transport belongs to the universality class with dynamical exponent z=3/2, in accordance to recent related simulations in discrete and continuous time quantum Heisenberg spin 1/2 chains.

Time-dependent matrix product ansatz for interacting reversible dynamics

We present an explicit time-dependent matrix product ansatz (tMPA) which describes the time-evolution of any local observable in an interacting and deterministic lattice gas, specifically for the rule 54 reversible cellular automaton of [Bobenko et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 158, 127 (1993)]. Our construction is based on an explicit solution of real-space real-time inverse scattering problem. We consider two applications of this tMPA. Firstly, we provide the first exact and explicit computation of the dynamic structure factor in an interacting deterministic model, and secondly, we solve the extremal case of the inhomogeneous quench problem, where a semi-infinite lattice in the maximum entropy state is joined with an empty semi-infinite lattice. Both of these exact results rigorously demonstrate a coexistence of ballistic and diffusive transport behaviour in the model, as expected for normal fluids.

Computational complexity of non-equilibrium steady states of quantum spin chains

We study non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) of spin chains with boundary Markovian dissipation from the computational complexity point of view. We focus on XX chains whose NESS are matrix product operators (MPO), i.e. with coefficients of a tensor operator basis described by transition amplitudes in an auxiliary space. Encoding quantum algorithms in the auxiliary space, we show that estimating expectations of operators, being local in the sense that each acts on disjoint sets of few spins covering all the system, provides the answers of problems at least as hard as, and believed by many computer scientists to be much harder than, those solved by quantum computers. We draw conclusions on the hardness of the above estimations.

Exact Bethe ansatz spectrum of a tight-binding chain with dephasing noise

We construct an exact map between a tight-binding model on any bipartite lattice in presence of dephasing noise and a Hubbard model with imaginary interaction strength. In one dimension, the exact many-body Liouvillian spectrum can be obtained by application of the Bethe ansatz method. We find that both the non-equilibrium steady state and the leading decay modes describing the relaxation at late times are related to the eta-pairing symmetry of the Hubbard model. We show that there is a remarkable relation between the time-evolution of an arbitrary k-point correlation function in the dissipative system and k-particle states of the corresponding Hubbard model.

Influence of dephasing on many-body localization

We study the effects of dephasing noise on a prototypical many-body localized system -- the XXZ spin 1/2 chain with a disordered magnetic field. At times longer than the inverse dephasing strength the dynamics of the system is described by a probabilistic Markov process on the space of diagonal density matrices, while all off-diagonal elements of the density matrix decay to zero. The generator of the Markovian process is a bond-disordered spin chain. The scaling variable is identified, and independence of relaxation on the interaction strength is demonstrated. We show that purity and von Neumann entropy are extensive, showing no signatures of localization, while the operator space entanglement entropy exhibits a logarithmic growth with time until the final saturation corresponding to localization breakdown, suggesting a many-body localized dynamics of the effective Markov process.

Quasilocal charges in integrable lattice systems

We review recent progress in understanding the notion of locality in integrable quantum lattice systems. The central concept are the so-called quasilocal conserved quantities, which go beyond the standard perception of locality. Two systematic procedures to rigorously construct families of quasilocal conserved operators based on quantum transfer matrices are outlined, specializing on anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain. Quasilocal conserved operators stem from two distinct classes of representations of the auxiliary space algebra, comprised of unitary (compact) representations, which can be naturally linked to the fusion algebra and quasiparticle content of the model, and non-unitary (non-compact) representations giving rise to charges, manifestly orthogonal to the unitary ones. Various condensed matter applications in which quasilocal conservation laws play an essential role are presented, with special emphasis on their implications for anomalous transport properties (finite Drude weight) and relaxation to non-thermal steady states in the quantum quench scenario.

preprint2015arXiv

Approximate conservation laws in perturbed integrable lattice models

We develop a numerical algorithm for identifying approximately conserved quantities in models perturbed away from integrability. In the long-time regime, these quantities fully determine correlation functions of local observables. Applying the algorithm to the perturbed XXZ model we find that the main effect of perturbation consists in expanding the support of conserved quantities. This expansion follows quadratic dependence on the strength of perturbation. The latter result together with correlation functions of conserved quantities obtained from the memory function analysis confirm feasibility of the perturbation theory.

Complete Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in an interacting Theory

In integrable many-particle systems, it is widely believed that the stationary state reached at late times after a quantum quench can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) constructed from their extensive number of conserved charges. A crucial issue is then to identify a complete set of these charges, enabling the GGE to provide exact steady state predictions. Here we solve this long-standing problem for the case of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain by explicitly constructing a GGE which uniquely fixes the macrostate describing the stationary behaviour after a general quantum quench. A crucial ingredient in our method, which readily generalizes to other integrable models, are recently discovered quasi-local charges. As a test, we reproduce the exact post-quench steady state of the Neel quench problem obtained previously by means of the Quench Action method.

Connected correlations, fluctuations and current of magnetization in the steady state of boundary driven XXZ spin chains

We show how to exploit algebraic relations of operators (or matrices) which constitute the non-equilibrium matrix product steady state of a boundary driven quantum spin chain to find partial differential equations determining all the $m$-point correlation functions in the continuum limit. These partial differential equations, the order of which is determined by scaling of the non-equilibrium partition function, are readily solved if we also know the boundary conditions. In this way we can avoid resorting to representation theory of the matrix product algebra. We apply our methods to study the distributions, or moments, of the magnetization and the spin current observables in boundary driven open XXZ spin chains, as well as some connected correlation functions and find that the transverse connected correlation functions are thermodynamically non-decaying and long-range at the isotropic point $Δ=1$.

Corner transfer matrices for 2D strongly coupled many-body Floquet systems

We develop, based on Baxter's corner transfer matrices, a renormalizable numerically exact method for computation of the level density of the quasi-energy spectra of two-dimensional (2D) locally interacting many-body Floquet systems. We demonstrate its functionality exemplified by the kicked 2D quantum Ising model. Using the method, we are able to treat the system of arbitrarily large finite size (for example 10000 x 10000 lattice). We clearly demonstrate that the density of Floquet quasi-energy spectrum tends to a flat function in the thermodynamic limit for generic values of model parameters. However, contrary to the prediction of random matrices of the circular orthogonal ensemble, the decay rates of the Fourier coefficients of the Floquet level density exhibit rich and non-trivial dependence on the system's parameters. Remarkably, we find that the method is renormalizable and gives thermodynamically convergent results only in certain regions of the parameter space where the corner transfer matrices have effectively a finite rank for any system size. In the complementary regions, the corner transfer matrices effectively become of full rank and the method becomes non-renormalizable. This may indicate an interesting phase transition from an area- to volume- law of entanglement in the thermodynamic state of a Floquet system.

Infinitely dimensional Lax structure for one-dimensional Hubbard model

We report a two-parametric irreducible infinitely dimensional representation of the Lax integrability condition for the fermi Hubbard chain. Besides being of fundamental interest, hinting on possible novel quantum symmetry of the model, our construction allows for an explicit representation of an exact steady state many-body density operator for non-equilibrium boundary-driven Hubbard chain with arbitrary (asymmetric) particle source/sink rates at the letf/right end of the chain and with arbitrary boundary values of chemical potentials.

Integrability of a deterministic cellular automaton driven by stochastic boundaries

We propose an interacting many-body space-time-discrete Markov chain model, which is composed of an integrable deterministic and reversible cellular automaton (the rule 54 of [Bobenko et al, CMP 158, 127 (1993)]) on a finite one-dimensional lattice Z_2^n, and local stochastic Markov chains at the two lattice boundaries which provide chemical baths for absorbing or emitting the solitons. Ergodicity and mixing of this many-body Markov chain is proven for generic values of bath parameters, implying existence of a unique non-equilibrium steady state. The latter is constructed exactly and explicitly in terms of a particularly simple form of matrix product ansatz which is termed a patch ansatz. This gives rise to an explicit computation of observables and $k$-point correlations in the steady state as well as the construction of a nontrivial set of local conservation laws. Feasibility of an exact solution for the full spectrum and eigenvectors (decay modes) of the Markov matrix is suggested as well. We conjecture that our ideas can pave the road towards a theory of integrability of boundary driven classical deterministic lattice systems.

Integrable non-equilibrium steady state density operators for boundary driven XXZ spin chains: observables and full counting statistics

The dynamics is modelled by the Lindblad master equation. We also review how to calculate some relevant physical observables and provide the statistics of spin current assuming the spin chain is weakly coupled to the baths [Phys. Rev. Local and Quasilocal Conserved Quantities in Integrable Systems

We outline a procedure for counting and identifying a complete set of local and quasilocal conserved operators in integrable lattice systems. The method yields a systematic generation of all independent, conserved quasilocal operators related to time-average of local operators with a support on up to M consecutive sites. As an example we study the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain and show that the number of independent conserved operators grows linearly with M. Besides the known local operators there exist novel quasilocal conserved quantities in all the parity sectors. The existence of quasilocal conserved operators is shown also for the isotropic Heisenberg model. Implications for the anomalous relaxation of quenched systems are discussed as well.

Matrix product solutions of boundary driven quantum chains

We review recent progress on constructing non-equilibrium steady state density operators of boundary driven locally interacting quantum chains, where driving is implemented via Markovian dissipation channels attached to the chain's ends. We discuss explicit solutions in three different classes of quantum chains, specifically, the paradigmatic (anisotropic) Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain, the Fermi-Hubbard chain, and the Lai-Sutherland spin-1 chain, and discuss universal concepts which characterize these solutions, such as matrix product ansatz and a more structured walking graph state ansatz. The central theme is the connection between the matrix product form of nonequilibrium states and the integrability structures of the bulk Hamiltonian, such as the Lax operators and the Yang-Baxter equation. However, there is a remarkable distinction with respect to the conventional quantum inverse scattering method, namely addressing nonequilibrium steady state density operators requires non-unitary irreducible representations of Yang-Baxter algebra which are typically of infinite dimensionality. Such constructions result in non-Hermitian, and often also non-diagonalisable families of commuting transfer operators which in turn result in novel conservation laws of the integrable bulk Hamiltonians. For example, in the case of anisotropic Heisenberg model, quasi-local conserved operators which are odd under spin reversal (or spin flip) can be constructed, whereas the conserved operators stemming from orthodox Hermitian transfer operators (via logarithmic differentiation) are all even under spin reversal.

Quasilocal conservation laws from semicyclic irreducible representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ in $XXZ$ spin-$1/2$ chains

We construct quasilocal conserved charges in the gapless ($|Δ| \le 1$) regime of the Heisenberg $XXZ$ spin-$1/2$ chain, using semicyclic irreducible representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. These representations are characterized by a periodic action of ladder operators, which act as generators of the aforementioned algebra. Unlike previously constructed conserved charges, the new ones do not preserve magnetization, i.e. they do not possess the $U(1)$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The possibility of application in relaxation dynamics resulting from $U(1)$-breaking quantum quenches is discussed.

Breakdown of the generalized Gibbs ensemble for current-generating quenches

We establish a relation between two hallmarks of integrable systems: the relaxation towards the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) and the dissipationless charge transport. We show that the former one is possible only if the so called Mazur bound on the charge stiffness is saturated by local conserved quantities. As an example we show how a non--GGE steady state with a current can be generated in the one-dimensional model of interacting spinless fermions with a flux quench. Moreover an extended GGE involving the quasi-local conserved quantities can be formulated for this case.

Exact steady state manifold of a boundary driven spin-1 Lai-Sutherland chain

We present an explicit construction of a family of steady state density matrices for an open integrable spin-1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions, also known as the Lai-Sutherland model, driven far from equilibrium by means of two oppositely polarizing Markovian dissipation channels localized at the boundary. The steady state solution exhibits n+1 fold degeneracy, for a chain of length n, due to existence of (strong) Liouvillian U(1) symmetry. The latter can be exploited to introduce a chemical potential and define a grand canonical nonequilibrium steady state ensemble. The matrix product form of the solution entails an infinitely-dimensional representation of a non-trivial Lie algebra (semidirect product of sl_2 and a non-nilpotent radical) and hints to a novel Yang-Baxter integrability structure.

Exactly solvable counting statistics in weakly coupled open interacting spin systems

We study the full counting statistics for interacting quantum many-body spin systems weakly coupled to the environment. In the leading order in the system-bath coupling we derive exact spin current statistics for a large class of parity symmetric spin-1/2 systems driven by a pair of Markovian baths with local coupling operators. Interestingly, in this class of systems the leading order current statistics are universal and do not depend on details of the Hamiltonian. Furthermore, in the specific case of symmetrically boundary driven anisotropic Heisenberg ($XXZ$) spin 1/2 chain we derive explicitly the third-order non-linear corrections to the current statistics.

Quasilocal conservation laws in XXZ spin-1/2 chains: open, periodic and twisted boundary conditions

A continuous family of quasilocal exact conservation laws is constructed in the anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin-1/2 chain for periodic (or twisted) boundary conditions and for a set of commensurate anisotropies densely covering the entire easy plane interaction regime. All local conserved operators follow from the standard (Hermitian) transfer operator in fundamental representation (with auxiliary spin s=1/2), and are all even with respect to a spin flip operation. However, the quasilocal family is generated by differentiation of a non-Hermitian highest weight transfer operator with respect to a complex auxiliary spin representation parameter s and includes also operators of odd parity. For a finite chain with open boundaries the time derivatives of quasilocal operators are not strictly vanishing but result in operators localized near the boundaries of the chain. We show that a simple modification of the non-Hermitian transfer operator results in exactly conserved, but still quasilocal operators for periodic or generally twisted boundary conditions. As an application, we demonstrate that implementing the new exactly conserved operator family for estimating the high-temperature spin Drude weight results, in the thermodynamic limit, in exactly the same lower bound as for almost conserved family and open boundaries. Under the assumption that the bound is saturating (suggested by agreement with previous thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculations) we propose a simple explicit construction of infinite time averages of local operators such as the spin current.

Comments on boundary driven open XXZ chain: asymmetric driving and uniqueness of steady states

In this short note we provide two extensions on the recent explicit results on the matrix-product ansatz for the non-equilibrium steady state of a markovianly boundary-driven anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin 1/2 chain. We write a perturbative solution for the steady state density matrix in the system-batyh coupling for an arbitrary (asymmetric) set of four spin-flip rates at the two chain ends, generalizing the symmetric-driving ansatz of [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)]. Furthermore, we generalize the exact (non-perturbative) form of the steady state for just two Lindblad channels (spin-up flipping on the left, and spin-down flipping on the right) to an arbitrary (asymmetric) ratio of the spin flipping rates [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 137201 (2011)]. In addition, we also indicate a simple proof of uniqueness of our steady states.

Eigenvalue statistics as indicator of integrability of non-equilibrium density operators

We propose to quantify the complexity of non-equilibrium steady state density operators, as well as of long-lived Liouvillian decay modes, in terms of level spacing distribution of their spectra. Based on extensive numerical studies in a variety of models, some solvable and some unsolved, we conjecture that integrability of density operators (e.g., existence of an algebraic procedure for their construction in finitely many steps) is signaled by a Poissonian level statistics, whereas in the generic non-integrable cases one finds level statistics of a Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices. Eigenvalue statistics can therefore be used as an efficient tool to identify integrable quantum non-equilibrium systems.

Exact Nonequilibrium Steady State of an Open Hubbard Chain

We discuss current carrying non-equilibrium steady state of an open fermionic Hubbard chain that is strongly driven by markovian incoherent processes localized at the chain ends. An explicit form of exact many-body density operator for any value of the coupling parameter is presented. The structure of a matrix product form of the solution is encoded in terms of a novel diagrammatic technique which should allow for generalization to other integrable non-equillibrium models.

Exterior integrability: Yang-Baxter form of nonequilibrium steady state density operator

A new type of quantum transfer matrix, arising as a Cholesky factor for the steady state density matrix of a dissipative Markovian process associated with the boundary-driven Lindblad equation for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXX) chain, is presented. The transfer matrix forms a commuting family of non-Hermitian operators depending on the spectral parameter which is essentially the strength of dissipative coupling at the boundaries. The intertwining of the corresponding Lax and monodromy matrices is performed by an infinitely dimensional Yang-Baxter R-matrix which we construct explicitly and which is essentially different from the standard XXX R-matrix. We also discuss a possibility to construct Bethe Ansatz for the spectrum and eigenstates of the non-equilibrium steady state density operator. Furthermore, we indicate the existence of a deformed R-matrix in the infinitely-dimensional auxiliary space for the anisotropic XXZ spin-1/2 chain which in general provides a sequence of new, possibly quasi-local, conserved quantities of the bulk XXZ dynamics.

Fundamental aspects of steady state heat to work conversion

We review theoretical approaches to analyzing efficiency of steady state heat to work conversion which is crucial in the timely problem of optimizing efficiency of small-scale heat engines and refrigerators. A rather abstract perspective of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical system's theory is taken to view at this very practical problem. Several recently discovered general mechanisms of optimizing the figure of merit of thermoelectric efficiency are discussed, also in connection to breaking time-reversal symmetry of the microscopic equations of motion. Applications of these theoretical and mathematical ideas to practically relevant models are pointed out.

Lower bounds on high-temperature diffusion constants from quadratically extensive almost conserved operators

We prove a general theorem which provides a strict lower bound on high-temperature Green-Kubo diffusion constants in locally interacting quantum lattice systems, under the assumption of existence of a quadratically extensive almost conserved quantity - an operator whose commutator with the lattice Hamiltonian is localized on the boundary sites only. We explicitly demonstrate and compute such a bound in two important models in one dimension, namely in the (isotropic) Heisenberg spin 1/2 chain and in the fermionic Hubbard chain.

Macroscopic Diffusive Transport in a Microscopically Integrable Hamiltonian System

We demonstrate that a completely integrable classical mechanical model, namely the lattice Landau-Lifshitz classical spin chain, supports diffusive spin transport with a finite diffusion constant in the easy-axis regime, while in the easy-plane regime it displays ballistic transport in the absence of any known relevant local or quasi-local constant of motion in the symmetry sector of the spin current. This surprising finding should open the way towards analytical computation of diffusion constants for integrable interacting systems and hints on existence of new quasi-local classical conservation laws beyond the standard soliton theory.

Non-ergodicity and localization of invariant measure for two colliding masses

We show evidence, based on extensive and carefully performed numerical experiments, that the system of two elastic hard-point masses in one-dimension is not ergodic for a generic mass ratio and consequently does not follow the principle of energy equipartition. This system is equivalent to a right triangular billiard. Remarkably, following the time-dependent probability distribution in a suitably chosen velocity direction space, we find evidence of exponential localization of invariant measure. For non-generic mass ratios which correspond to billiard angles which are rational, or weak irrational multiples of pi, the system is ergodic, in consistence with existing rigorous results.

Time irreversible billiards with piecewise-straight trajectories

We introduce a new family of billiards which break time reversal symmetry in spite of having piece-wise straight trajectories. We show that our billiards preserve the ergodic and mixing properties of conventional billiards while they may turn into exponential the power law decay of correlations characteristic of Sinai type billiards. Such billiards can be implemented by squeezing the transverse magnetic field along lines or along one-dimensional manifolds.

A note on symmetry reductions of the Lindblad equation: transport in constrained open spin chains

We study quantum transport properties of an open Heisenberg XXZ spin 1/2 chain driven by a pair of Lindblad jump operators satisfying a global `microcanonical' constraint, i.e. conserving the total magnetization. We will show that this system has an additional discrete symmetry which is particular to the Liouvillean description of the problem. Such symmetry reduces the dynamics even more than what would be expected in the standard Hilbert space formalism and establishes existence of multiple steady states. Interestingly, numerical simulations of the XXZ model suggest that a pair of distinct non-equilibrium steady states becomes indistinguishable in the thermodynamic limit, and exhibit sub-diffusive spin transport in the easy-axis regime of anisotropy Delta > 1.

We consider charge and spin transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at infinite temperature, half-filling and zero magnetization. PT-symmetric quantum Liouvillian dynamics

We discuss a combination of unitary and anti-unitary symmetry of quantum Liouvillian dynamics, in the context of open quantum systems, which implies a D2 symmetry of the complex Liovillean spectrum. Railway switch transport model

We propose a simple model of coupled heat and particle transport based on a zero-dimensional classical deterministic dynamics which is reminiscent of a railway switch whose action is only a function of the particle's energy. It is shown that already in the minimal three-terminal model, where the second terminal is considered as a probe with zero net particle and heat currents, one can find extremely asymmetric Onsager matrices as a consequence of time-reversal symmetry breaking of the model. This minimalistic transport model provides a better understanding of thermoelectric heat engines in the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking.

Thermodyamic bounds on Drude weights in terms of almost-conserved quantities

We consider one-dimensional translationally invariant quantum spin (or fermionic) lattices and prove a Mazur-type inequality bounding the time-averaged thermodynamic limit of a finite-temperature expectation of a spatio-temporal autocorrelation function of a local observable in terms of quasi-local conservation laws with open boundary conditions. Namely, the commutator between the Hamiltonian and the conservation law of a finite chain may result in boundary terms only. No reference to techniques used in Suzuki's proof of Mazur bound is made (which strictly applies only to finite-size systems with exact conservation laws), but Lieb-Robinson bounds and exponential clustering theorems of quasi-local C^* quantum spin algebras are invoked instead. Our result has an important application in the transport theory of quantum spin chains, in particular it provides rigorous non-trivial examples of positive finite-temperature spin Drude weight in the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin 1/2 chain [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)].

Thermodynamic limit of Mazur bound on the spin stiffness of XXZ chain, using the almost-conserved Z-operator

This short note can be considered as a mathematical supplement to [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)], namely explaining in more detail how rigorous bound on high-temperature spin stiffness is established in thermodynamic limit using the almost-conserved Z-operator resulting from solving the boundary driven Lindblad equation for the anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin 1/2 chain . No reference to techniques used in Suzuki's proofs of Mazur's bound is made, but quasi-local spin C* algebras and Lieb-Robinson bounds are invoked instead.

Wigner separability entropy and complexity of quantum dynamics

We propose the Wigner separability entropy as a measure of complexity of a quantum state. This quantity measures the number of terms that effectively contribute to the Schmidt decomposition of the Wigner function with respect to a chosen phase space decomposition. We prove that the Wigner separability entropy is equal to the operator space entanglement entropy, measuring entanglement in the space of operators, and, for pure states, to twice the entropy of entanglement. The quantum to classical correspondence between the Wigner separability entropy and the separability entropy of the classical phase space Liouville density is illustrated by means of numerical simulations of chaotic maps. In this way, the separability entropy emerges as an extremely broad complexity quantifier in both the classical and quantum realms.

Complexity and non-separability of classical Liouvillian dynamics

We propose a simple complexity indicator of classical Liouvillian dynamics, namely the separability entropy, which determines the logarithm of an effective number of terms in a Schmidt decomposition of phase space density with respect to an arbitrary fixed product basis. We show that linear growth of separability entropy provides stricter criterion of complexity than Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, namely it requires that dynamics is exponentially unstable, non-linear and non-markovian.

Exact nonequilibrium steady state of a strongly driven open XXZ chain

An exact and explicit ladder-tensor-network ansatz is presented for the non-equilibrium steady state of an anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain which is driven far from equilibrium with a pair of Lindblad operators acting on the edges of the chain only. We show that the steady-state density operator of a finite system of size n is - apart from a normalization constant - a polynomial of degree 2n-2 in the coupling constant. Efficient computation of physical observables is faciliated in terms of a transfer operator reminiscent of a classical Markov process. In the isotropic case we find cosine spin profiles, 1/n^2 scaling of the spin current, and long-range correlations in the steady state. This is a fully nonperturbative extension of a recent result [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)].

Lindblad master equation approach to superconductivity in open quantum systems

We consider an open quantum Fermi-system which consists of a single degenerate level with pairing interactions embedded into a superconducting bath. The time evolution of the reduced density matrix for the system is given by Linblad master equation, where the dissipators describe exchange of Bogoliubov quasiparticles with the bath. We obtain fixed points of the time evolution equation for the covariance matrix and study their stability by analyzing full dynamics of the order parameter.

Non-equilibrium phase transition in a periodically driven XY spin chain

We present a general formulation of Floquet states of periodically time-dependent open Markovian quasi-free fermionic many-body systems in terms of a discrete Lyapunov equation. Illustrating the technique, we analyze periodically kicekd XY spin 1/2 chain which is coupled to a pair of Lindblad reservoirs at its ends. A complex phase diagram is reported with re-entrant phases of long range and exponentially decaying spin-spin correlations as some of the system's parameters are varied. The structure of phase diagram is reproduced in terms of counting non-trivial stationary points of Floquet quasi-particle dispersion relation.

Open XXZ spin chain: Nonequilibrium steady state and strict bound on ballistic transport

Explicit matrix product ansatz is presented, in first two orders in the (weak) coupling parameter, for the non-equilibrium steady state of the homogeneous, nearest neighbor Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain driven by Lindblad operators which act only at the edges of the chain. The first order of the density operator becomes in thermodynamic limit an exact pseudo-local conservation law and yields -- via Mazur inequality -- a rigorous lower bound on the high temperature spin Drude weight. Such Mazur bound is a non-vanishing fractal function of the anisotropy parameter Delta for |Delta|<1.

Transport properties of a boundary-driven one-dimensional gas of spinless fermions

We analytically study a system of spinless fermions driven at the boundary with an oscillating chemical potential. Various transport regimes can be observed: at zero driving frequency the particle current through the system is independent of the system's length; at the phase-transition frequency, being equal to the bandwidth, the current decays as n^{-alpha} with the chain length n, alpha being either 2 or 3; below the transition the scaling of the current is n^{-1/2}, indicating anomalous transport, while it is exponentially small exp{(-n/2xi)} above the transition. Therefore, by a simple change of frequency of the a.c. driving one can vary transport from ballistic, anomalous, to insulating.

Explicit solution of the Lindblad equation for nearly isotropic boundary driven XY spin 1/2 chain

Explicit solution for the 2-point correlation function in a non-equilibrium steady state of a nearly isotropic boundary-driven open XY spin 1/2 chain in the Lindblad formulation is provided. A non-equilibrium quantum phase transition from exponentially decaying correlations to long-range order is discussed analytically. In the regime of long-range order a new phenomenon of correlation resonances is reported, where the correlation response of the system is unusually high for certain discrete values of the external bulk parameter, e.g. the magnetic field.

Long range order in non-equilibrium interacting quantum spin chains

We conjecture that non-equilibrium boundary conditions generically trigger long range order in non-equilibrium steady states of locally interacting quantum chains. Our result is based on large scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of several models of quantum spin 1/2 chains which are driven far from equilibrium by coupling to a pair of unequal Lindblad reservoirs attached locally to the ends of the chain. In particular, we find a phase transition from exponentially decaying to long range spin-spin correlations in integrable Heisenberg XXZ chain by changing the anisotropy parameter. Long range order also typically emerges after breaking the integrability of the model.

PT-Symmetric Wave Chaos

We study a new class of chaotic systems with dynamical localization, where gain or loss mechanisms break the Hermiticity, while allowing for parity-time (PT) symmetry. For a value γ_PT of the gain or loss parameter the spectrum undergoes a spontaneous phase transition from real (exact phase) to complex values (broken phase). We develop a one parameter scaling theory for γ_PT, and show that chaos assists the exact PT phase. Our results have applications to the design of optical elements with PT symmetry.

Spectral theorem for the Lindblad equation for quadratic open fermionic systems

The spectral theorem is proven for the quantum dynamics of quadratic open systems of n fermions described by the Lindblad equation. Invariant eigenspaces of the many-body Liouvillean dynamics and their largest Jordan blocks are explicitly constructed for all eigenvalues. For eigenvalue zero we describe an algebraic procedure for constructing (possibly higher dimensional) spaces of (degenerate) non-equilibrium steady states.

Thermalization and ergodicity in many-body open quantum systems

We study thermalization in many-body quantum systems locally coupled to an external bath. It is shown that quantum chaotic systems do thermalize, that is, they exhibit relaxation to an invariant ergodic state which, in the bulk, is well approximated by the grand canonical state. Moreover, the resulting ergodic state in the bulk does not depend on the details of the baths. On the other hand, for integrable systems the invariant state does depend on the bath and is different from the grand canonical state.

Third quantization

The basic ideas of second quantization and Fock space are extended to density operator states, used in treatments of open many-body systems. This can be done for fermions and bosons. While the former only requires the use of a non-orthogonal basis, the latter requires the introduction of a dual set of spaces. In both cases an operator algebra closely resembling the canonical one is developed and used to define the dual sets of bases. We here concentrated on the bosonic case where the unboundedness of the operators requires the definitions of dual spaces to support the pair of bases. Some applications, mainly to non-equilibrium steady states, will be mentioned.

A one dimensional hard-point gas as a thermoelectric engine

We demonstrate the possibility to build a thermoelectric engine using a one dimensional gas of molecules with unequal masses and hard-point interaction. Most importantly, we show that the efficiency of this engine is determined by a new parameter YT which is different from the well known figure of merit ZT. Even though the efficiency of this particular model is low, our results shed new light on the problem and open the possibility to build efficient thermoelectric engines.

Exact solution of Markovian master equations for quadratic fermi systems: thermal baths, open XY spin chains, and non-equilibrium phase transition

We generalize the method of third quantization to a unified exact treatment of Redfield and Lindblad master equations for open quadratic systems of n fermions in terms of diagonalization of 4n x 4n matrix. Non-equilibrium thermal driving in terms of the Redfield equation is analyzed in detail. We explain how to compute all physically relevant quantities, such as non-equilibrium expectation values of local observables, various entropies or information measures, or time evolution and properties of relaxation. We also discuss how to exactly treat explicitly time dependent problems. The general formalism is then applied to study a thermally driven open XY spin 1/2 chain. We find that recently proposed non-equilibrium quantum phase transition in the open XY chain survives the thermal driving within the Redfield model. In particular, the phase of long-range magnetic correlations can be characterized by hypersensitivity of the non-equilibrium-steady state to external (bath or bulk) parameters. Studying the heat transport we find negative thermal conductance for sufficiently strong thermal driving, as well as non-monotonic dependence of the heat current on the strength of the bath coupling.

Increasing thermoelectric efficiency towards the Carnot limit

We study the problem of thermoelectricity and propose a simple microscopic mechanism for the increase of thermoelectric efficiency. We consider the cross transport of particles and energy in open classical ergodic billiards. We show that, in the linear response regime, where we find exact expressions for all transport coefficients, the thermoelectric efficiency of ideal ergodic gases can approach Carnot efficiency for sufficiently complex charge carrier molecules. Our results are clearly demonstrated with a simple numerical simulation of a Lorentz gas of particles with internal rotational degrees of freedom.

Matrix product simulations of non-equilibrium steady states of quantum spin chains

Time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method with a matrix product ansatz is employed for explicit computation of non-equilibrium steady state density operators of several integrable and non-integrable quantum spin chains, which are driven far from equilibrium by means of Markovian couplings to external baths at the two ends. It is argued that even though the time-evolution can not be simulated efficiently due to fast entanglement growth, the steady states in and out of equilibrium can be typically accurately approximated, so that chains of length of the order n ~ 100 are accessible. Our results are demonstrated by performing explicit simulations of steady states and calculations of energy/spin densities/currents in several problems of heat and spin transport in quantum spin chains. Previously conjectured relation between quantum chaos and normal transport is re-confirmed with high acurracy on much larger systems.

Quantum Surface of Section Method: Eigenstates and Unitary Quantum Poincare Evolution

The unitary representation of exact quantum Poincare mapping is constructed. It is equivalent to the compact representation in a sense that it yields equivalent quantization condition with important advantage over the compact version: since it preserves the probability it can be literally interpreted as the quantum Poincare mapping which generates quantum time evolution at fixed energy between two successive crossings with surface of section (SOS). SOS coherent state representation (SOS Husimi distribution) of arbitrary (either stationary or evolving) quantum SOS state (vector from the Hilbert space over the configurational SOS) is introduced. Dynamical properties of SOS states can be quantitatively studied in terms of the so called localization areas which are defined through information entropies of their SOS coherent state representations. In the second part of the paper I report on results of extensive numerical application of quantum SOS method in a generic but simple 2-dim Hamiltonian system, namely semiseparable oscillator. I have calculated the stretch of 13500 consecutive eigenstates with the largest sequential quantum number around 18 million and obtained the following results: (i) the validity of the semiclassical Berry-Robnik formula for level spacing statistics was confirmed and using the concept of localization area the states were quantitatively classified as regular or chaotic, (ii) the classical and quantum Poincare evolution were performed and compared, and expected agreement was found, (iii) I studied few examples of wavefunctions and particularly, SOS coherent state representation of regular and chaotic eigenstates and analyzed statistical properties of their zeros which were shown on the chaotic component of 2-dim SOS to be uniformly distributed with the cubic repulsion between nearest neighbours.
