Metastable structure of photoexcited WO$_{3}$ determined by the pump--probe extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and constrained thorough search analysis

We have determined the local structure of photoexcited metastable WO$_3$ created 150 ps after 400 nm laser irradiation by the pulse pump--probe L$_3$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and the constrained thorough search analysis. We have found a highly distorted octahedral local structure with one of the shortest W=O bonds being further shortened to 1.66 Åwhile the other five bonds were elongated even though theoretical calculations predicted the reverse change. We discuss this contradiction and propose a possible structure for the metastable state.

A self-referenced in-situ arrival time monitor for X-ray free-electron lasers

We present a novel, highly versatile, and self-referenced arrival time monitor for measuring the femtosecond time delay between a hard X-ray pulse from a free-electron laser and an optical laser pulse, measured directly on the same sample used for pump-probe experiments. Two chirped and picosecond long optical supercontinuum pulses traverse the sample with a mutually fixed time delay of 970 fs, while a femtosecond X-ray pulse arrives at an instant in between both pulses. Behind the sample the supercontinuum pulses are temporally overlapped to yield near-perfect destructive interference in the absence of the X-ray pulse. Stimulation of the sample with an X-ray pulse delivers non-zero contributions at certain optical wavelengths, which serve as a measure of the relative arrival time of the X-ray pulse with an accuracy of better than 25 fs. We find an excellent agreement of our monitor with the existing timing diagnostics at the SACLA XFEL with a Pearson correlation value of 0.98. We demonstrate a high sensitivity to measure X-ray pulses with pulse energies as low as 30 $μ$J. Using a free-flowing liquid jet as interaction sample ensures the full replacement of the sample volume for each X-ray/optical event, thus enabling its utility even at MHz repetition rate XFEL sources.

3D diffractive imaging of nanoparticle ensembles using an X-ray laser

We report the 3D structure determination of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by X-ray single particle imaging (SPI). Around 10 million diffraction patterns from gold nanoparticles were measured in less than 100 hours of beam time, more than 100 times the amount of data in any single prior SPI experiment, using the new capabilities of the European X-ray free electron laser which allow measurements of 1500 frames per second. A classification and structural sorting method was developed to disentangle the heterogeneity of the particles and to obtain a resolution of better than 3 nm. With these new experimental and analytical developments, we have entered a new era for the SPI method and the path towards close-to-atomic resolution imaging of biomolecules is apparent.

Certain identities on derivatives of radial homogeneous and logarithmic functions

Let $k$ be a natural number and $s$ be real. In the 1-dimensional case, the $k$-th order derivatives of the functions $\lvert x\rvert^s$ and $\log \lvert x\rvert$ are multiples of $\lvert x\rvert^{s-k}$ and $\lvert x\rvert^{-k}$, respectively. In the present paper, we generalize this fact to higher dimensions by introducing a suitable norm of the derivatives, and give the exact values of the multiples.

Complex structural dynamics of bismuth under laser-driven compression

With the aid of nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction techniques, we have explored the complex structural dynamics of bismuth under laser-driven compression. The results demonstrate that shocked bismuth undergoes a series of structural transformations involving four solid structures: the Bi-I, Bi-II, Bi-III and Bi-V phases. The transformation from the Bi-I phase to the Bi-V phase occurs within 4 ns under shock compression at ~11 GPa, showing no transient phases with the available experimental conditions. Successive phase transitions (Bi-V->Bi-III->Bi-II->Bi-I) during the shock release within 30 ns have also been resolved, which were inaccessible using other dynamic techniques.

Reversible phase transition in laser-shocked 3Y-TZP ceramics observed via nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction

The high-pressure phase stability of the metastable tetragonal zirconia is still under debate. The transition dynamics of shocked Y2O3 (3 mol%) stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics under laser-shock compression has been directly studied using nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase transformation to the monoclinic phase, which is the stable phase for pure zirconia at ambient pressure and room temperature, has been observed during compression at 5 GPa within 20 ns without any intermediates. This monoclinic phase reverts back to the tetragonal phase during pressure release. The results imply that the stabilization effect due to addition of Y2O3 is negated by the shear stress under compression.
