Skin Lesion Recognition with Class-Hierarchy Regularized Hyperbolic Embeddings

In practice, many medical datasets have an underlying taxonomy defined over the disease label space. However, existing classification algorithms for medical diagnoses often assume semantically independent labels. In this study, we aim to leverage class hierarchy with deep learning algorithms for more accurate and reliable skin lesion recognition. We propose a hyperbolic network to learn image embeddings and class prototypes jointly. The hyperbola provably provides a space for modeling hierarchical relations better than Euclidean geometry. Meanwhile, we restrict the distribution of hyperbolic prototypes with a distance matrix that is encoded from the class hierarchy. Accordingly, the learned prototypes preserve the semantic class relations in the embedding space and we can predict the label of an image by assigning its feature to the nearest hyperbolic class prototype. We use an in-house skin lesion dataset which consists of around 230k dermoscopic images on 65 skin diseases to verify our method. Extensive experiments provide evidence that our model can achieve higher accuracy with less severe classification errors than models without considering class relations.

Spectral instability of symmetric shear flows in a two-dimensional channel

This paper concerns spectral instability of shear flows in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with sufficiently large Reynolds number: $R\to \infty$. It is well-documented in the physical literature, going back to Heisenberg, C.C. Lin, Tollmien, Drazin and Reid, that generic plane shear profiles other than the linear Couette flow are linearly unstable for sufficiently large Reynolds number. In this work, we provide a complete mathematical proof of these physical results. In the case of a symmetric channel flow, our analysis gives exact unstable eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, showing that the solution could grow slowly at the rate of $e^{t/\sqrt {αR}}$, where $α$ is the small spatial frequency that remains between lower and upper marginal stability curves: $α_\mathrm{low}(R) \approx R^{-1/7}$ and $α_\mathrm{up}(R) \approx R^{-1/11}$. We introduce a new, operator-based approach, which avoids to deal with matching inner and outer asymptotic expansions, but instead involves a careful study of singularity in the critical layers by deriving pointwise bounds on the Green function of the corresponding Rayleigh and Airy operators.

A note on the Prandtl boundary layers

This note concerns a nonlinear ill-posedness of the Prandtl equation and an invalidity of asymptotic boundary-layer expansions of incompressible fluid flows near a solid boundary. Our analysis is built upon recent remarkable linear ill-posedness results established by Gérard-Varet and Dormy [2], and an analysis in Guo and Tice [5]. We show that the asymptotic boundary-layer expansion is not valid for non-monotonic shear layer flows in Sobolev spaces. We also introduce a notion of weak well-posedness and prove that the nonlinear Prandtl equation is not well-posed in this sense near non-stationary and non-monotonic shear flows. On the other hand, we are able to verify that Oleinik's monotonic solutions are well-posed.

Boundary layers interactions in the plane parallel incompressible flows

We study the inviscid limit problem of the incompressible flows in the presence of both impermeable regular boundaries and a hypersurface transversal to the boundary across which the inviscid flow has a discontinuity jump. In the former case, boundary layers have been introduced by Prandtl as correctors near the boundary between the inviscid and viscous flows. In the latter case, the viscosity smoothes out the discontinuity jump by creating a transition layer which has the same amplitude and thickness as the Prandtl layer. In the neighborhood of the intersection of the impermeable boundary and of the hypersurface, interactions between the boundary and the transition layers must then be considered. In this paper, we initiate a mathematical study of this interaction and carry out a strong convergence in the inviscid limit for the case of the plane parallel flows introduced by Di Perna and Majda in \cite{DM}.

Multi-dimensional stability of Lax shocks in hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems

We study nonlinear time-asymptotic stability of small--amplitude planar Lax shocks in a model consisting of a system of multi--dimensional conservation laws coupled with an elliptic system. Such a model can be found in context of dynamics of a gas in presence of radiation. Our main result asserts that the standard uniform Evans stability condition implies nonlinear stability. The main analysis is based on the earlier developments by Zumbrun for multi-dimensional viscous shock waves and by Lattanzio-Mascia-Nguyen-Plaza-Zumbrun for one--dimensional radiative shock profiles.

Stability analysis of collisionless plasmas with specularly reflecting boundary

In this paper we provide sharp criteria for linear stability or instability of equilibria of collisionless plasmas in the presence of boundaries. Specifically, we consider the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system with specular reflection at the boundary for the particles and with the perfectly conducting boundary condition for the electromagnetic field. Here we initiate our investigation in the simple geometry of radial and longitudinal symmetry.

Toward nonlinear stability of sources via a modified Burgers equation

Coherent structures are solutions to reaction-diffusion systems that are time-periodic in an appropriate moving frame and spatially asymptotic at $x=\pm\infty$ to spatially periodic travelling waves. This paper is concerned with sources which are coherent structures for which the group velocities in the far field point away from the core. Sources actively select wave numbers and therefore often organize the overall dynamics in a spatially extended system. Determining their nonlinear stability properties is challenging as localized perturbations may lead to a non-localized response even on the linear level due to the outward transport. Using a modified Burgers equation as a model problem that captures some of the essential features of coherent structures, we show how this phenomenon can be analysed and nonlinear stability be established in this simpler context.

Remarks on the ill-posedness of the Prandtl equation

In the lines of a recent paper by Gerard-Varet and Dormy, we establish various ill-posedness results for the Prandtl equation. By considering perturbations of stationary shear flows, we show that for some linearizations of the Prandtl equation and some $C^\infty$ initial data, local in time $C^\infty$ solutions do not exist. At the nonlinear level, we prove that if a flow exists in the Sobolev setting, it cannot be Lipschitz continuous. Besides ill-posedness in time, we also establish some ill-posedness in space, that casts some light on the results obtained by Oleinik for monotonic data.

Stability of radiative shock profiles for hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems

Extending previous work with Lattanzio and Mascia on the scalar (in fluid-dynamical variables) Hamer model for a radiative gas, we show nonlinear orbital asymptotic stability of small-amplitude shock profiles of general systems of coupled hyperbolic--eliptic equations of the type modeling a radiative gas, that is, systems of conservation laws coupled with an elliptic equation for the radiation flux, including in particular the standard Euler--Poisson model for a radiating gas. The method is based on the derivation of pointwise Green function bounds and description of the linearized solution operator, with the main difficulty being the construction of the resolvent kernel in the case of an eigenvalue system of equations of degenerate type. Nonlinear stability then follows in standard fashion by linear estimates derived from these pointwise bounds, combined with nonlinear-damping type energy estimates

Virtual Environments for multiphysics code validation on Computing Grids

We advocate in this paper the use of grid-based infrastructures that are designed for seamless approaches to the numerical expert users, i.e., the multiphysics applications designers. It relies on sophisticated computing environments based on computing grids, connecting heterogeneous computing resources: mainframes, PC-clusters and workstations running multiphysics codes and utility software, e.g., visualization tools. The approach is based on concepts defined by the HEAVEN* consortium. HEAVEN is a European scientific consortium including industrial partners from the aerospace, telecommunication and software industries, as well as academic research institutes. Currently, the HEAVEN consortium works on a project that aims to create advanced services platforms. It is intended to enable "virtual private grids" supporting various environments for users manipulating a suitable high-level interface. This will become the basis for future generalized services allowing the integration of various services without the need to deploy specific grid infrastructures.
