Universality limits for generalized Jacobi measures

In this paper universality limits are studied in connection with measures which exhibit power-type singular behavior somewhere in their support. We extend the results of Lubinsky for Jacobi measures supported on $ [-1,1] $ to generalized Jacobi measures supported on a compact subset of the real line, where the singularity can be located in the interior or at an endpoint of the support. The analysis is based upon the Riemann-Hilbert method, Christoffel functions, the polynomial inverse image method of Totik and the normal family approach of Lubinsky.

Zeros of orthogonal polynomials near an algebraic singularity of the measure

In this paper we study the local zero behavior of orthogonal polynomials around an algebraic singularity, that is, when the measure of orthogonality is supported on $ [-1,1] $ and behaves like $ h(x)|x - x_0|^λdx $ for some $ x_0 \in (-1,1) $, where $ h(x) $ is strictly positive and analytic. We shall sharpen the theorem of Yoram Last and Barry Simon and show that the so-called fine zero spacing (which is known for $ λ= 0$) unravels in the general case, and the asymptotic behavior of neighbouring zeros around the singularity can be described with the zeros of the function $ c J_{\frac{λ- 1}{2}}(x) + d J_{\frac{λ+ 1}{2}}(x) $, where $ J_a(x) $ denotes the Bessel function of the first kind and order $ a $. Moreover, using Sturm-Liouville theory, we study the behavior of this linear combination of Bessel functions, thus providing estimates for the zeros in question.

Christoffel functions on Jordan curves with respect to measures with jump singularity

In this paper we establish asymptotic results for Christoffel functions with respect to measures supported on Jordan curves having a Radon-Nikodym derivative with a jump singularity. We extend the results known for measures supported in the interval $ [-1,1] $ to more general sets, for example a system of Jordan curves, using polynomial inverse images. It is shown that the asymptotic limit can be written in terms of the equilibrium measure or Green's function.

Christoffel functions with power type weights

Precise asymptotics for Christoffel functions are established for power type weights on unions of Jordan curves and arcs. The asymptotics involve the equilibrium measure of the support of the measure. The result at the endpoints of arc components is obtained from the corresponding asymptotics for internal points with respect to a different power weight. On curve components the asymptotic formula is proved via a sharp form of Hilbert's lemniscate theorem while taking polynomial inverse images. The situation is completely different on the arc components, where the local asymptotics is obtained via a discretization of the equilibrium measure with respect to the zeros of an associated Bessel function. The proofs are potential theoretical, and fast decreasing polynomials play an essential role in them.

Asymptotic behavior of critical indecomposable multi-type branching processes with immigration

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of a critical multi-type branching process with immigration is described when the offspring mean matrix is irreducible, in other words, when the process is indecomposable. It is proved that sequences of appropriately scaled random step functions formed from periodic subsequences of a critical indecomposable multi-type branching process with immigration converge weakly towards a process supported by a ray determined by the Perron vector of the offspring mean matrix. The types can be partitioned into nonempty mutually disjoint subsets (according to communication of types) such that the coordinate processes belonging to the same subset are multiples of the same squared Bessel process, and the coordinate processes belonging to different subsets are independent.
