Radii of starlikeness and convexity of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions

In this paper our aim is to find the radii of starlikeness and convexity of the generalized Mittag-Leffler function for three different kinds of normalization by using their Hadamard factorization in such a way that the resulting functions are analytic in the unit disk of the complex plane. The characterization of entire functions from Laguerre-Pólya class and a result of H. Kumar and M.A. Pathan on the reality of the zeros of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions, which origins goes back to Dzhrbashyan, Ostrovskiĭ and Peresyolkova, play important roles in this paper. Moreover, the interlacing properties of the zeros of Mittag-Leffler function and its derivative is also useful in the proof of the main results. By using the Euler-Rayleigh inequalities for the real zeros of the generalized Mittag-Leffler function, we obtain some tight lower and upper bounds for the radii of starlikeness and convexity of order zero.

Geometric and monotonic properties of hyper-Bessel functions

Some geometric properties of a normalized hyper-Bessel functions are investigated. Especially we focus on the radii of starlikeness, convexity, and uniform convexity of hyper-Bessel functions and we show that the obtained radii satisfy some transcendental equations. In addition, we give some bounds for the first positive zero of normalized hyper-Bessel functions, Redheffer-type inequalities, and bounds for this function. In this study we take advantage of Euler-Rayleigh inequalities and Laguerre-Pólya class of real entire functions, intensively.

The Hurwitz-type theorem for the regular Coulomb wave function via Hankel determinants

We derive a closed formula for the determinant of the Hankel matrix whose entries are given by sums of negative powers of the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. This new identity applied together with results of Grommer and Chebotarev allows us to prove a Hurwitz-type theorem about the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave function. As a particular case, we obtain a new proof of the classical Hurwitz's theorem from the theory of Bessel functions that is based on algebraic arguments. In addition, several Hankel determinants with entries given by the Rayleigh function and Bernoulli numbers are also evaluated.

Bounds for radii of starlikeness of some $q$-Bessel functions

In this paper the radii of starlikeness of the Jackson and Hahn-Exton $q$-Bessel functions are considered and for each of them three different normalization are applied. By applying Euler-Rayleigh inequalities for the first positive zeros of these functions tight lower and upper bounds for the radii of starlikeness of these functions are obtained. The Laguerre-Pólya class of real entire functions plays an important role in this study. In particular, we obtain some new bounds for the first positive zero of the derivative of the classical Bessel function of the first kind.

Products of Bessel and modified Bessel functions

The reality of the zeros of the product and cross-product of Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind is studied. As a consequence the reality of the zeros of two hypergeometric polynomials is obtained together with the number of the Fourier critical points of the normalized forms of the product and cross-product of Bessel functions. Moreover, the interlacing properties of the real zeros of these products of Bessel functions and their derivatives are also obtained. As an application some geometric properties of the normalized forms of the cross-product and product of Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind are studied. For the cross-product and the product three different kind of normalization are investigated and for each of the six functions the radii of starlikeness and convexity are precisely determined by using their Hadamard factorization. For these radii of starlikeness and convexity tight lower and upper bounds are given via Euler-Rayleigh inequalities. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also given for the parameters such that the six normalized functions are starlike and convex in the open unit disk. The properties and the characterization of real entire functions from the Laguerre-Pólya class via hyperbolic polynomials play an important role in this paper. Some open problems are also stated, which may be of interest for further research.

Radii of starlikeness and convexity of Wright functions

In this paper our aim is to find the radii of starlikeness and convexity of the normalized Wright functions for three different kind of normalization. The key tools in the proof of our main results are the Mittag-Leffler expansion for Wright function and properties of real zeros of Wright function and its derivative. In addition, by using the Euler-Rayleigh inequalities we obtain some tight lower and upper bounds for the radii of starlikeness and convexity of order zero for the normalized Wright functions. The main results of the paper are natural extensions of some known results on classical Bessel functions of the first kind. Some open problems are also proposed, which may be of interest for further research.

Zeros of some special entire functions

The real and complex zeros of some special entire functions such as Wright, hyper-Bessel, and a special case of generalized hypergeometric functions are studied by using some classical results of Laguerre, Obreschkhoff, Pólya and Runckel. The obtained results extend the known theorem of Hurwitz on exact number of nonreal zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind. Moreover, results on zeros of derivatives of Bessel functions and cross-product of Bessel functions are also given, which are related to some recent open problems.

Bounds for radii of starlikeness and convexity of some special functions

In this paper we consider some normalized Bessel, Struve and Lommel functions of the first kind, and by using the Euler-Rayleigh inequalities for the first positive zeros of combination of special functions we obtain tight lower and upper bounds for the radii of starlikeness of these functions. By considering two different normalization of Bessel and Struve functions we give some inequalities for the radii of convexity of the same functions. On the other hand, we show that the radii of univalence of some normalized Struve and Lommel functions are exactly the radii of starlikeness of the same functions. In addition, by using some ideas of Ismail and Muldoon we present some new lower and upper bounds for the zeros of derivatives of some normalized Struve and Lommel functions. The Laguerre-Pólya class of real entire functions plays an important role in our study.

Radii of starlikeness and convexity of regular Coulomb wave functions

In this paper our aim is to determine the radii of univalence, starlikeness and convexity of the normalized regular Coulomb wave functions for two different kinds of normalization. The key tools in the proof of our main results are the Mittag-Leffler expansion for regular Coulomb wave functions, and properties of zeros of the regular Coulomb wave functions and their derivatives. Moreover, by using the technique of differential subordinations we present some conditions on the parameters of the regular Coulomb wave function in order to have a starlike normalized form. In addition, by using the Euler-Rayleigh inequalities we obtain some tight bounds for the radii of starlikeness of the normalized regular Coulomb wave functions. Some open problems for the zeros of the regular Coulomb wave functions are also stated which may be of interest for further research.

Zeros of Bessel function derivatives

We prove that for $ν>n-1$ all zeros of the $n$th derivative of Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ are real and simple. Moreover, we show that the positive zeros of the $n$th and $(n+1)$th derivative of Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ are interlacing when $ν\geq n,$ and $n$ is a natural number or zero. Our methods include the Weierstrassian representation of the $n$th derivative, properties of the Laguerre-Pólya class of entire functions, and the Laguerre inequalities. Some similar results for the zeros of the first and second derivative of the Struve function of the first kind $\mathbf{H}_ν$ are also proved. The main results obtained in this paper generalize and complement some classical results on the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind. Some open problems related to Hurwitz theorem on the zeros of Bessel functions are also proposed, which may be of interest for further research.

Zeros of orthogonal polynomials near an algebraic singularity of the measure

In this paper we study the local zero behavior of orthogonal polynomials around an algebraic singularity, that is, when the measure of orthogonality is supported on $ [-1,1] $ and behaves like $ h(x)|x - x_0|^λdx $ for some $ x_0 \in (-1,1) $, where $ h(x) $ is strictly positive and analytic. We shall sharpen the theorem of Yoram Last and Barry Simon and show that the so-called fine zero spacing (which is known for $ λ= 0$) unravels in the general case, and the asymptotic behavior of neighbouring zeros around the singularity can be described with the zeros of the function $ c J_{\frac{λ- 1}{2}}(x) + d J_{\frac{λ+ 1}{2}}(x) $, where $ J_a(x) $ denotes the Bessel function of the first kind and order $ a $. Moreover, using Sturm-Liouville theory, we study the behavior of this linear combination of Bessel functions, thus providing estimates for the zeros in question.

Cross-product of Bessel functions: monotonicity patterns and functional inequalities

In this paper we study the Dini functions and the cross-product of Bessel functions. Moreover, we are interested on the monotonicity patterns for the cross-product of Bessel and modified Bessel functions. In addition, we deduce Redheffer-type inequalities, and the interlacing property of the zeros of Dini functions and the cross-product of Bessel and modified Bessel functions. Bounds for logarithmic derivatives of these functions are also derived. The key tools in our proofs are some recently developed infinite product representations for Dini functions and cross-product of Bessel functions.

On the generalization of the Lambert $W$ function with applications in theoretical physics

The Lambert $W$ function, giving the solutions of a simple transcendental equation, has become a famous function and arises in many applications in combinatorics, physics, or population dyamics just to mention a few. In the last decade it turned out that some specific relativistic equations and molecular physics problems need solutions of more general transcendental equations. Thus a generalization of the Lambert function is necessary. In this paper we construct this generalization which involves some special polynomials.

Turán type inequalities for regular Coulomb wave functions

Turán, Mitrinović-Adamović and Wilker type inequalities are deduced for regular Coulomb wave functions. The proofs are based on a Mittag-Leffler expansion for the regular Coulomb wave function, which may be of independent interest. Moreover, some complete monotonicity results concerning the Coulomb zeta functions and some interlacing properties of the zeros of Coulomb wave functions are given.

Close-to-convexity of some special functions and their derivatives

In this paper our aim is to deduce some sufficient (and necessary) conditions for the close-to-convexity of some special functions and their derivatives, like Bessel functions, Struve functions, and a particular case of Lommel functions of the first kind, which can be expressed in terms of the hypergeometric function ${}_1F_2$. The key tool in our proofs is a result of Shah and Trimble about transcendental entire functions with univalent derivatives. Moreover, a known result of Pólya on entire functions, the infinite product representations and some results on zeros of Bessel, Struve and Lommel functions of the first kind are used in order to achieve the main results of the paper.

Functional inequalities for generalized inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions

Various miscellaneous functional inequalities are deduced for the so-called generalized inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. For instance, functional inequalities for sums, difference and quotient of generalized inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions are given, as well as some Grünbaum inequalities with the aid of the classical Bernoulli inequality. Moreover, by means of certain already derived bounds, bilateral bounding inequalities are obtained for the generalized hypergeometric ${}_3F_2$ Clausen function.

On an identity for zeros of Bessel functions

In this paper our aim is to present an elementary proof of an identity of Calogero concerning the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind. Moreover, by using our elementary approach we present a new identity for the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind, which in particular reduces to some other new identities. We also show that our method can be applied for the zeros of other special functions, like Struve functions of the first kind, and modified Bessel functions of the second kind.

Radii of starlikeness and convexity of some $q$-Bessel functions

Geometric properties of the Jackson and Hahn-Exton $q$-Bessel functions are studied. For each of them, three different normalizations are applied in such a way that the resulting functions are analytic in the unit disk of the complex plane. For each of the six functions we determine the radii of starlikeness and convexity precisely by using their Hadamard factorization. These are $q$-generalizations of some known results for Bessel functions of the first kind. The characterization of entire functions from the Laguerre-Pólya class via hyperbolic polynomials play an important role in this paper. Moreover, the interlacing property of the zeros of Jackson and Hahn-Exton $q$-Bessel functions and their derivatives is also useful in the proof of the main results. We also deduce a sufficient and necessary condition for the close-to-convexity of a normalized Jackson $q$-Bessel function and its derivatives. Some open problems are proposed at the end of the paper.

The radius of convexity of normalized Bessel functions of the first kind

In this paper we determine the radius of convexity for three kind of normalized Bessel functions of the first kind. In the mentioned cases the normalized Bessel functions are starlike-univalent and convex-univalent, respectively, on the determined disks. The key tools in the proofs of the main results are some new Mittag-Leffler expansions for quotients of Bessel functions of the first kind, special properties of the zeros of Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivative, and the fact that the smallest positive zeros of some Dini functions are less than the first positive zero of the Bessel function of the first kind. Moreover, we find the optimal parameters for which these normalized Bessel functions are convex in the open unit disk. In addition, we disprove a conjecture of Baricz and Ponnusamy concerning the convexity of the Bessel function of the first kind.

Van der Corput inequalities for Bessel functions

In this note we offer some log-concavity properties of certain functions related to Bessel functions of the first kind and modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind, by solving partially a recent conjecture on the log-convexity/log-concavity properties for modified Bessel functions of the first kind and their derivatives. Moreover, we give an application of the mentioned results by extending two inequalities of van der Corput to Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind. Similar inequalities are proved also for modified Bessel functions of the second kind, as well as for log-concave probability density functions.

Functional inequalities for modified Struve functions

In this paper, by using a general result on the monotonicity of quotients of power series, our aim is to prove some monotonicity and convexity results for the modified Struve functions. Moreover, as consequences of the above mentioned results, we present some functional inequalities as well as lower and upper bounds for modified Struve functions. Our main results complement and improve the results of Joshi and Nalwaya [11].

Functional inequalities for the Bickley function

In this paper our aim is to deduce some complete monotonicity properties and functional inequalities for the Bickley function. The key tools in our proofs are the classical integral inequalities, like Chebyshev, Hölder-Rogers, Cauchy-Schwarz, Carlson and Grüss inequalities, as well as the monotone form of l'Hospital's rule. Moreover, we prove the complete monotonicity of a determinant function of which entries involve the Bickley function.

In this paper our aim is to prove some monotonicity and convexity results for the modified Struve function of the second kind by using its integral representation. Moreover, as consequences of these results, we present some functional inequalities (like Turán type inequalities) as well as lower and upper bounds for modified Struve function of the second kind and its logarithmic derivative.

In this paper our aim is to present some monotonicity and convexity properties for the one dimensional regularization of the Coulomb potential, which has applications in the study of atoms in magnetic fields and which is in fact a particular case of the Tricomi confluent hypergeometric function. Moreover, we present some Turán type inequalities for the function in the question and we deduce from these inequalities some new tight upper bounds for the Mills ratio of the standard normal distribution.

Integral representations and summations of modified Struve function

It is known that Struve function $\mathbf H_ν$ and modified Struve function $\mathbf L_ν$ are closely connected to Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ and to modified Bessel function of the first kind $I_ν$ and possess representations through higher transcendental functions like generalized hypergeometric ${}_1F_2$ and Meijer $G$ function. Also, the NIST project and Wolfram formula collection contain a set of Kapteyn type series expansions for $\mathbf L_ν(x)$. In this paper firstly, we obtain various another type integral representation formulae for $\mathbf L_ν(x)$ using the technique developed by D. Jankov and the authors. Secondly, we present some summation results for different kind of Neumann, Kapteyn and Schlömilch series built by $I_ν(x)$ and $\mathbf L_ν(x)$ which are connected by a Sonin--Gubler formula, and by the associated modified Struve differential equation. Finally, solving a Fredholm type convolutional integral equation of the first kind, Bromwich--Wagner line integral expressions are derived for the Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν$ and for an associated generalized Schlömilch series.

In this paper we consider a sum of modified Bessel functions of the first kind of which particular case is used in the study of Kanter's sharp modified Bessel function bound for concentrations of some sums of independent symmetric random vectors. We present some monotonicity and convexity properties for that sum of modified Bessel functions of the first kind, as well as some Turán type inequalities, lower and upper bounds. Moreover, we point out an error in Kanter's paper [Ka] and at the end of the paper we pose an open problem, which may be of interest for further research.

The radius of starlikeness of normalized Bessel functions of the first kind

In this note our aim is to determine the radius of starlikeness of the normalized Bessel functions of the first kind for three different kinds of normalization. The key tool in the proof of our main result is the Mittag-Leffler expansion for Bessel functions of the first kind and the fact that, according to Ismail and Muldoon [IM2], the smallest positive zeros of some Dini functions are less than the first positive zero of the Bessel function of the first kind.

Turán type inequalities for Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions

Some sharp two-sided Turán type inequalities for parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions are deduced. The proofs are based on integral representations for quotients of parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions, which arise in the study of the infinite divisibility of the Fisher-Snedecor F distribution. Moroever, some complete monotonicity results are given concerning Turán determinants of Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions. These complement and improve some of the results of Ismail and Laforgia [23].

Functional inequalities for modified Bessel functions

In this paper our aim is to show some mean value inequalities for the modified Bessel functions of the first and second kinds. Our proofs are based on some bounds for the logarithmic derivatives of these functions, which are in fact equivalent to the corresponding Turán type inequalities for these functions. As an application of the results concerning the modified Bessel function of the second kind we prove that the cumulative distribution function of the gamma-gamma distribution is log-concave. At the end of this paper several open problems are posed, which may be of interest for further research.

A novel power series representation of the generalized Marcum $Q-$function of positive order involving generalized Laguerre polynomials is presented. Turán determinants of Bessel functions

In this paper first we survey the Turán type inequalities and related problems for the Bessel functions of the first kind. Then we extend the known higher order Turán type inequalities for Bessel functions of the first kind to real parameters and we deduce new closed integral representation formulae for the second kind Neumann type series of Bessel functions of the first kind occurring in the study of Turán determinants of Bessel functions of the first kind. At the end of the paper we prove a Turán type inequality for the Bessel functions of the second kind.

On Turán type inequalities for modified Bessel functions

In this note our aim is to point out that certain inequalities for modified Bessel functions of the first and second kind, deduced recently by Laforgia and Natalini, are in fact equivalent to the corresponding Turán type inequalities for these functions. Moreover, we present some new Turán type inequalities for the aforementioned functions and we show that their product is decreasing as a function of the order, which has application in the study of stability of radially symmetric solutions in a generalized FitzHugh-Nagumo equation in two spatial dimensions. At the end of this note a conjecture is posed, which may be of interest for further research.
