Electrically tunable nonrigid moire exciton polariton supersolids at room temperature

A supersolid is a macroscopic quantum state which sustains superfluid and crystallizing structure together after breaking the U(1) symmetry and translational symmetry. On the other hand, a moire pattern can form by superimposing two periodic structures along a particular direction. Up to now, supersolids and moire states are disconnected from each other. In this work we show that exciton polariton supersolids can form moire states in a double degenerate parametric scattering process which creates two constituted supersolids with different periods in a liquid crystal microcavity. In addition, we demonstrate the nonrigidity of the moire exciton polariton supersolids by electrically tuning the wavevector and period of one supersolid component with another one being fixed. Our work finds a simple way to link moire states and supersolids, which offers to study nontrivial physics emerging from the combination of moire lattices and supersolids which can be electrically tuned at room temperature.

Observation of anomalous exciton polariton bands in PEPI perovskite based microcavity at room temperature

Recently anomalous energy bands with negative mass attract intensive attention where non Hermiticity plays an important role. In this work we observe anomalous exciton polariton bands in PEPI perovskite based microcavity at room temperature. We simulate the anomalous band structure using a non-Hermitian coupled oscillator model which agree with experiments very well. Our results offer to study non-Hermitian polariton wave dynamics at room temperature.

Switching off microcavity polariton condensate near the exceptional point

Gain and loss modulation are ubiquitous in nature. An exceptional point arises when both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues coalesce, which in a physical system can be achieved by engineering the gain and loss coefficients, leading to a wide variety of counter-intuitive phenomena. In this work we demonstrate the existence of an exceptional point in an exciton polariton condensate in a double-well potential. Remarkably, near the exceptional point, the polariton condensate localized in one potential well can be switched off by an additional optical excitation in the other well with very low (far below threshold) laser power which surprisingly induces additional loss into the system. Increasing the power of the additional laser leads to a situation in which gain dominates in both wells again, such that the polaritons re-condense with almost the same density in the two potential wells. Our results offer a simple way to optically manipulate the polariton lasing process in a double-well potential structure. Extending such configuration to complex potential well lattices offers exciting prospects to explore high-order exceptional points and non-Hermitian topological photonics in a non-equilibrium many-body system.

Spiraling vortices in exciton-polariton condensates

We introduce the phenomenon of spiraling vortices in driven-dissipative (non-equilibrium) exciton-polariton condensates excited by a non-resonant pump beam. At suitable low pump intensities, these vortices are shown to spiral along circular trajectories whose diameter is inversely proportional to the effective mass of the polaritons, while the rotation period is mass independent. Both diameter and rotation period are inversely proportional to the pump intensity. Stable spiraling patterns in the form of complexes of multiple mutually-interacting vortices are also found. At elevated pump intensities, which create a stronger homogeneous background, we observe more complex vortex trajectories resembling Spirograph patterns.

Controllable high-speed polariton waves in a PT-symmetric lattice

Parity-time (PT) symmetry gives rise to unusual phenomena in many physical systems, presently attracting a lot of attention. One essential and non-trivial task is the fabrication and design of the PT-symmetric lattices in different systems. Here we introduce a method to realize such a lattice in an exciton-polariton condensate in a planar semiconductor microcavity. We theoretically demonstrate that in the regime, where lattice profile is nearly PT-symmetric, a polariton wave can propagate at very high velocity resulting from the beating of a ground state condensate created in the lowest energy band at very small momentum and a condensate simultaneously created in higher energy states with large momentum. The spontaneous excitation of these two states in the nonlinear regime due to competition between multiple eigenmodes becomes possible since the spectrum of nearly PT-symmetric structure reveals practically identical amplification for Bloch waves from the entire Brillouin zone. There exists a wide velocity range for the resulting polariton wave. This velocity can be controlled by an additional coherent pulse carrying a specific momentum. We also discuss the breakup of the PT-symmetry when the polariton lifetime exceeds a certain threshold value.
