ImageMech: From image to particle spring network for mechanical characterization

The emerging demand for advanced structural and biological materials calls for novel modeling tools that can rapidly yield high-fidelity estimation on materials properties in design cycles. Lattice spring model (LSM), a coarse-grained particle spring network, has gained attention in recent years for predicting the mechanical properties and giving insights into the fracture mechanism with high reproducibility and generalizability. However, to simulate the materials in sufficient detail for guaranteed numerical stability and convergence, most of the time a large number of particles are needed, greatly diminishing the potential for high-throughput computation and therewith data generation for machine learning frameworks. Here, we implement CuLSM, a GPU-accelerated CUDA C++ code realizing parallelism over the spring list instead of the commonly used spatial decomposition, which requires intermittent updates on the particle neighbor list. Along with the image-to-particle conversion tool Img2Particle, our toolkit offers a fast and flexible platform to characterize the elastic and fracture behaviors of materials, expediting the design process between additive manufacturing and computer-aided design. With the growing demand for new lightweight, adaptable, and multi-functional materials and structures, such tailored and optimized modeling platform has profound impacts, enabling faster exploration in design spaces, better quality control for 3D printing by digital twin techniques, and larger data generation pipelines for image-based generative machine learning models.

Beauty mesons in $N_f=2+1+1+1 $ lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We present the first study of $N_f=2+1+1+1$ lattice QCD with domain-wall quarks. The $(b, c, s)$ quarks are physical, while the $(u, d)$ quarks are heavier than their physical masses, with the pion mass $ \sim 700 $ MeV. The gauge ensemble is generated by hybrid Monte Carlo simulation with the Wilson gauge action for the gluons, and the optimal domain-wall fermion action for the quarks. Using point-to-point quark propagators, we measure the time-correlation functions of quark-antiquark meson interpolators with quark contents $\bar b b$, $\bar b c$, $\bar b s$, and $ \bar c c$, and obtain the masses of the low-lying mesons. They are in good agreement with the experimental values, plus some predictions which have not been observed in experiments. Moreover, we also determine the masses of $(b, c, s)$ quarks.

First study of $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD with physical domain-wall quarks

Using 10-16 units of Nvidia DGX-1, we have generated the first gauge ensemble for $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD with physical $(u/d, s, c)$ domain-wall quarks, on the $ 64^4 $ lattice with lattice spacing $a \sim 0.064 $ fm ($ L > 4 $ fm, and $ M_πL > 3 $). The salient feature of this gauge ensemble is that the chiral symmetry is preserved to a high precision and all topological sectors are sampled ergodically. In this paper, we present the first results of the topological susceptibility and the ground-state hadron mass spectra.

The $β$-function of $SU(3)$ gauge theory with $ N_f = 10 $ massless fermions in the fundamental representation

We present the first study of the discrete $β$-function of the $ SU(3) $ gauge theory with 10 massless domain-wall fermions in the fundamental representation. The renormalized coupling is obtained by the finite-volume gradient flow scheme, and the discrete $β$-function is extrapolated to the continuum limit by the step-scaling method. Our result of the discrete $β$-function (with $ s = 2 $) suggests that this theory possesses an infrared fixed point around $ g_c^2 \sim 7.0 $ for $ c = \sqrt{8t}/L = 0.3 $.

Domain-Wall Fermion with $ R_5 $ Symmetry

We present the domain-wall fermion operator which is reflection symmetric in the fifth dimension, with the approximate sign function $ S(H) $ of the effective 4-dimensional Dirac operator satisfying the bound $ |1-S(λ)| \le 2 d_Z $ for $ λ^2 \in [λ_{min}^2, λ_{max}^2] $, where $ d_Z $ is the maximum deviation $ | 1- \sqrt{x} R_Z(x) |_{\rm max} $ of the Zolotarev optimal rational polynomial $ R_Z(x) $ of $ 1/\sqrt{x} $ for $ x \in [1, λ_{max}^2/λ_{min}^2] $, with degrees $ (n-1,n) $ for $ N_s = 2n $, and $ (n,n) $ for $ N_s = 2 n + 1 $.

Decay Constants of Pseudoscalar $D$-mesons in Lattice QCD with Domain-Wall Fermion

We present the first study of the masses and decay constants of the pseudoscalar $ D $ mesons in two flavors lattice QCD with domain-wall fermion. The gauge ensembles are generated on the $24^3 \times 48 $ lattice with the extent $ N_s = 16 $ in the fifth dimension, and the plaquette gauge action at $ β= 6.10 $, for three sea-quark masses with corresponding pion masses in the range $260-475$ MeV. We compute the point-to-point quark propagators, and measure the time-correlation functions of the pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The inverse lattice spacing is determined by the Wilson flow, while the strange and the charm quark masses by the masses of the vector mesons $ ϕ(1020) $ and $ J/ψ(3097) $ respectively. Using heavy meson chiral perturbation theory (HMChPT) to extrapolate to the physical pion mass, we obtain $ f_D = 202.3(2.2)(2.6) $ MeV and $ f_{D_s} = 258.7(1.1)(2.9) $ MeV.

Exact Pseudofermion Action for Monte Carlo Simulation of Domain-Wall Fermion

We present an exact pseudofermion action for hybrid Monte Carlo simulation (HMC) of one-flavor domain-wall fermion (DWF), with the effective 4-dimensional Dirac operator equal to the optimal rational approximation of the overlap-Dirac operator with kernel $ H = c H_w (1 + d γ_5 H_w)^{-1} $, where $ c $ and $ d $ are constants. Using this exact pseudofermion action, we perform HMC of one-flavor QCD, and compare its characteristics with the widely used rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm (RHMC). Moreover, to demonstrate the practicality of the exact one-flavor algorithm (EOFA), we perform the first dynamical simulation of the (1+1)-flavors QCD with DWF.

Chiral symmetry and axial U(1) symmetry in finite temperature QCD with domain-wall fermion

We study the restoration of the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry and the anomalously broken axial U(1) symmetry in finite temperature QCD at zero chemical potential. We use 2 flavors lattice QCD with optimal domain-wall fermion on the $ 16^3 \times 6 $ lattice, with the extent $ N_s = 16 $ in the fifth dimension, in the temperature range $ T = 130-230 $ MeV. To examine the restoration of the chiral symmetry and the axial $ U(1) $ symmetry, we use diluted $ Z_2 $ noises to calculate the chiral condensate, and the chiral susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar meson channels, for flavor singlet and non-singlet respectively. From the degeneracy of the chiral susceptibilities around $ T_c $, it suggests that the axial $ U(1) $ symmetry is restored in the chirally symmetric phase. Moreover, we examine the spectral density $ ρ(λ_c) $ of the 4D effective Dirac operator with exact chiral symmetry, which is obtained by computing zero modes plus (180+180) conjugate pairs of low-lying modes for each gauge configuration. The suppression of low modes in the spectral density provides a consistency check of the restoration of axial $ U(1) $ symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase.

Simulation of Lattice QCD with Domain-Wall Fermions

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the fundamental theory for the interaction between quarks and gluons. It manifests as the short-range strong interaction inside the nucleus, and plays an important role in the evolution of the early universe, from the quark-gluon phase to the hadron phase. To solve QCD is a grand challenge, since it requires very large-scale numerical simulations of the discretized action of QCD on the 4-dimensional space-time lattice. Moreover, since quarks are relativistic fermions, the 5-th dimension is introduced such that massless quarks with exact chiral symmetry can be realized at finite lattice spacing, on the boundaries of the 5-th dimension, the so-called domain-wall fermion (DWF). In this talk, I discuss how to simulate lattice QCD with DWF such that the chiral symmetry can be preserved optimally with a finite extent in the 5-th dimension. I also outline the simulations which have been performing by the TWQCD Collaboration and present some recent physical results.

Aspects of Domain-Wall Fermion on the Lattice

Two transparent layers are introduced at the boundaries of the fifth dimension for the optimal domain-wall fermions. For the quark fields defined in terms of these two transparent layers, they obey the usual chiral projection rule in the continuum, independent of the gauge fields. Consequently, any observable constructed with the quark fields manifests the symmetries exactly as those of its counterpart in the continuum.

Chiral Symmetry and the Residual Mass in Lattice QCD with the Optimal Domain-Wall Fermion

We derive the axial Ward identity for lattice QCD with domain-wall fermions, and from which we obtain a formula for the residual mass (45)-(46), that can be used to measure the chiral symmetry breaking due to the finite extension Ns in the fifth dimension. Furthermore, we obtain an upper bound for the residual mass in lattice QCD with the optimal domain-wall fermion.

Pseudoscalar Meson in Two Flavors QCD with the Optimal Domain-Wall Fermion

We perform hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulatons of two flavors QCD with the optimal domain-wall fermion (ODWF) on the 16^3 x 32 lattice (with lattice spacing a ~ 0.1 fm), for eight sea-quark masses corresponding to pion masses in the range 228-565 MeV. We calculate the mass and the decay constant of the pseudoscalar meson, and compare our data with the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We find that our data is in good agreement with the sea-quark mass dependence predicted by the next-to-leading order (NLO) ChPT, and provides a determination of the low-energy constants \bar{l}_3 and \bar{l}_4, the pion decay constant, the chiral condensate, and the average up and down quark mass.

GPU-Based Conjugate Gradient Solver for Lattice QCD with Domain-Wall Fermions

We present the first GPU-based conjugate gradient (CG) solver for lattice QCD with domain-wall fermions (DWF). It is well-known that CG is the most time-consuming part in the Hybrid Monte Carlo simulation of unquenched lattice QCD, which becomes even more computational demanding for lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. We have designed a CG solver for the general 5-dimensional DWF operator on NVIDIA CUDA architecture with mixed-precision, using the defect correction as well as the reliable updates algorithms. We optimize our computation by even-odd preconditioning in the 4D space-time lattice, plus several innovative techniques for CUDA kernels. For NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285/480, our CG solver attains 180/233 Gflops (sustained).

Lattice QCD with Optimal Domain-Wall Fermion: Light Meson Spectroscopy

We perform lattice simulations of two flavors QCD using the optimal domain-wall fermion, in which the chiral symmetry is preserved to a good precision ($ m_{res} \sim 0.3 $ MeV) on the $ 16^3 \times 32 $ lattice ($ L \sim 2 $ fm) with inverse lattice spacing $ a^{-1} \sim 1.8 $ GeV, and $ N_s = 16 $ in the fifth dimension, for eight sea quark masses corresponding to the pion masses in the range 210-500 MeV. We present our first results of the mass and the decay constant of the pseudoscalar meson, which are in good agreement with the next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory for $ M_π< 450 $ MeV, and from which we determine the low-energy constants $ f $, $ Σ$, $ \bar{l}_3 $ and $ \bar{l}_4 $. At the physical pion mass $ M_π = 135$ MeV, we obtain the pion decay constant $f_π=133(1)(2)$ MeV, and the average up and down quark mass $m_{ud}^{\bar{\rm MS}}(\mathrm{2 GeV})=4.09(7)(11)$ MeV, where the first error is statistical, and the second error is systematic due to the truncation of the higher order corrections and the uncertainty in the determination of the lattice spacing. Furthermore, we also obtain the chiral condensate $ Σ^{\bar{\mathrm{MS}}}(2 GeV) = [250(4)(7) MeV]^3 $.

Topological Susceptibility in Two Flavors Lattice QCD with the Optimal Domain-Wall Fermion

We determine the topological susceptibility of the gauge configurations generated by lattice simulations using two flavors of optimal domain-wall fermion on the $ 16^3 \times 32 $ lattice with length 16 in the fifth dimension, at the lattice spacing $ a \simeq 0.1 $ fm. Using the adaptive thick-restart Lanczos algorithm, we project the low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator, and obtain the topological charge of each configuration, for eight ensembles with pion masses in the range $ 220-550 $ MeV. From the topological charge, we compute the topological susceptibility and the second normalized cumulant. Our result of the topological susceptibility agrees with the sea-quark mass dependence predicted by the chiral perturbation theory and provides a determination of the chiral condensate, $Σ^{\bar{MS}}(2 GeV)=[259(6)(7) MeV]^3 $, and the pion decay constant $F_π= 92(12)(2)$ MeV.

Pseudovector meson with strangeness and closed-charm

We investigate the mass spectrum of 1^{+} exotic mesons with quark content (\c\s\cbar\qbar) or (\c\q\cbar\sbar), using molecular and diquark-antidiquark operators, in quenched lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry. For the molecular operator {(\qbarγ_i\c)(\cbarγ_5\s)-(\cbarγ_i\s)(\qbarγ_5\c)} and the diquark-antidiquark operator {(\q^T C γ_i \c)(\sbar C γ_5 \cbar^T)- (\q^T C γ_5 \c)(\sbar C γ_i^T \cbar^T)}, both detect a 1^{+} resonance with mass around 4010 +- 50 MeV in the limit m_q -> m_{u,d}.

Some remarks on the Ginsparg-Wilson fermion

We note that Fujikawa's proposal of generalization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation is equivalent to setting $R = (a γ_5 D)^{2k}$ in the original Ginsparg-Wilson relation $D γ_5 + γ_5 D = 2 a D R γ_5 D$. An explicit realization of D follows from the Overlap construction. The general properties of D are derived. The chiral properties of these higher-order (k > 0) realizations of Overlap Dirac operator are compared to those of the Neuberger-Dirac operator (k = 0), in terms of the fermion propagator, the axial anomaly and the fermion determinant in a background gauge field. Our present results (up to lattice size 16 x 16) indicate that the chiral properties of the Neuberger-Dirac operator are better than those of higher-order ones.

Chiral Anomaly and Index Theorem on a finite lattice

The condition for a lattice Dirac operator D to reproduce correct chiral anomaly at each site of a finite lattice for smooth background gauge fields is that D possesses exact zero modes satisfying the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. This is also the necessary condition for D to have correct fermion determinant (ratio) which plays the important role of incorporating dynamical fermions in the functional integral.
