Emergent Strings from Infinite Distance Limits

As a refinement of the Swampland Distance Conjecture, we propose that a quantum gravitational theory in an infinite distance limit of its moduli space either decompactifies, or reduces to an asymptotically tensionless, weakly coupled string theory. We support our claim by classifying, as special cases, the behaviour of M-Theory and Type IIA string theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds at infinite distances in Kahler moduli space. The analysis comprises three parts: We first classify the possible infinite distance limits in the classical Kahler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau three-fold. Each such limit at finite volume is characterized by a universal fibration structure, for which the generic fiber shrinking in the limit is either an elliptic curve, a K3 surface, or an Abelian surface. In the second part we focus on M-Theory and investigate the nature of the towers of asymptotically massless states that arise from branes wrapped on the shrinking fibers. Depending on which of the three classes of fibrations are considered, we obtain decompactification to F-Theory, or a theory with a unique asymptotically tensionless, weakly coupled heterotic or Type II string, respectively. The latter probes a dual D-manifold which is in general non-geometric. In addition to the intrinsic string excitations, towers of states from M2-branes along non-contractible curves become light and correspond to further wrapping and winding modes of the tensionless heterotic or Type II string. In the third part of the analysis, we consider Type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau three-folds and show that quantum effects obstruct taking finite volume infinite distance limits in the Kahler moduli space. The only possible infinite distance limit which is not a decompactification limit involves K3-fibrations with string scale fiber volume and gives rise to an emergent tensionless heterotic string.

Holomorphic Anomalies, Fourfolds and Fluxes

We investigate holomorphic anomalies of partition functions underlying string compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with background fluxes. For elliptic fourfolds the partition functions have an alternative interpretation as elliptic genera of N=1 supersymmetric string theories in four dimensions, or as generating functions for relative Gromov-Witten invariants of fourfolds with fluxes. We derive the holomorphic anomaly equations by starting from the BCOV formalism of topological strings, and translating them into geometrical terms. The result can be recast into modular and elliptic anomaly equations. As a new feature, as compared to threefolds, we find an extra contribution which is given by a gravitational descendant invariant. This leads to linear terms in the anomaly equations, which support an algebra of derivatives mapping between partition functions of the various flux sectors. These geometric features are mirrored by certain properties of quasi-Jacobi forms. We also offer an interpretation of the physics from the viewpoint of the worldsheet theory.

Membrane Limits in Quantum Gravity

It is expected that infinite distance limits in the moduli space of quantum gravity are accompanied by a tower of light states. In view of the emergent string conjecture, this tower must either induce a decompactification or correspond to the emergence of a tensionless critical string. We study the consistency conditions implied by this conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of quantum gravity under dimensional reduction. If the emergent string descends from a (2+1)-dimensional membrane in a higher-dimensional theory, we find that such a membrane must parametrically decouple from the Kaluza-Klein scale. We verify this censorship against emergent membrane limits, where the membrane would sit at the Kaluza-Klein scale, in the hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau 3-fold compactifications of string/M-theory. At the classical level, a putative membrane limit arises, up to duality, from an M5-brane wrapping the asymptotically shrinking special Lagrangian 3-cycle corresponding to the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow fiber of the Calabi-Yau. We show how quantum corrections in the moduli space obstruct such a limit and instead lead to a decompactification to 11 dimensions, where the role of the M5- and M2-branes are interchanged.

Quasi-Jacobi Forms, Elliptic Genera and Strings in Four Dimensions

We investigate the interplay between the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes and the modularity of elliptic genera in four-dimensional string theories. We argue that certain contributions to the elliptic genus are given by derivatives of modular or quasi-modular forms, which encode BPS invariants of Calabi-Yau or non-Calabi-Yau threefolds that are embedded in the given fourfold. As a result, the elliptic genus is only a quasi-Jacobi form, rather than a modular or quasi-modular one in the usual sense. This manifests itself as a holomorphic anomaly of the spectral flow symmetry, and in an elliptic holomorphic anomaly equation that maps between different flux sectors. We support our general considerations by a detailed study of examples, including non-critical strings in four dimensions. For the critical heterotic string, we explain how anomaly cancellation is restored due to the properties of the derivative sector. Essentially, while the modular sector of the elliptic genus takes care of anomaly cancellation involving the universal B-field, the quasi-Jacobi one accounts for additional B-fields that can be present. Thus once again, diverse mathematical ingredients, namely here the algebraic geometry of fourfolds, relative Gromow-Witten theory pertaining to flux backgrounds, and the modular properties of (quasi-)Jacobi forms, conspire in an intriguing manner precisely as required by stringy consistency.

Physics of Infinite Complex Structure Limits in eight Dimensions

We investigate infinite distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of F-theory compactified on K3 to eight dimensions. While this is among the simplest possible arenas to test ideas about the Swampland Distance Conjecture, it is nevertheless non-trivial enough to improve our understanding of the physics for these limiting geometries, including phenomena of emergence. It also provides a perspective on infinite distance limits from the viewpoint of open strings. The paper has two quite independent themes. In the main part we show that all degenerations of elliptic K3 surfaces at infinite distance as analysed in a companion paper can be interpreted as (partial) decompactification or emergent string limits in F-theory, in agreement with the Emergent String Conjecture. We present a unified geometric picture of the possible towers of states that can become light and illustrate our general claims via the connection between Kulikov models of degenerating K3 surfaces and the dual heterotic string. As an application we classify the possible maximal non-abelian Lie algebras and their Kac-Moody and loop extensions that can arise in the infinite distance limits. In the second part we discuss the infinite distance behaviour of certain exact quartic gauge couplings. We encounter a tension with the hypothesis that effective couplings should be fully generated by integrating out massive states. We show that by appropriately renormalizing the string coupling, at least partial emergence can be achieved.

Supersymmetric Protection and the Swampland

For certain terms in the action, supersymmetry can forbid an infinite number of possible contributions. We study whether such protection can occur in quantum gravity even without sufficient supersymmetry. We focus on whether the superpotential can vanish exactly in four-dimensional N=1 theories, and if the prepotential can be exactly cubic in N=2 theories. We investigate these questions in string theory and find that for almost all known string constructions the corrections allowed by supersymmetry do occur. However, we do find some special settings where all the corrections can be proven to vanish. These examples all share the common feature that they are related, through a certain orbifolding by a discrete gauged R-symmetry element, to a higher supersymmetric theory. Motivated by these results, we propose a Swampland criterion that any theory which enjoys such protection beyond its realised supersymmetry must have a direct connection to a higher supersymmetric theory.

G4-Flux and Standard Model Vacua in F-theory

We study the geometry of gauge fluxes in four-dimensional F-theory vacua with gauge group SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)xU(1) and its implications for phenomenology. The models are defined by a previously introduced class of elliptic fibrations whose fibre is given as a cubic hypersurface in ${\rm Bl}_2{\mathbb P}^2$, with the non-abelian gauge group factors SU(3)xSU(2) engineered torically via the top construction. To describe gauge fluxes on these fibrations we provide a classification of the primary vertical middle cohomology group in a fashion valid for any choice of base space. Using the ideal theoretic technique of primary decomposition we compute the cohomology classes of the matter surfaces associated with states charged under the non-abelian gauge group. These expressions allow us to interpret the cancellation of the pure and mixed non-abelian anomalies geometrically as a result of the general form of the matter surfaces, without reference to a specific type of gauge flux. Explicit results for the chiral indices of all matter states are obtained in terms of intersection numbers of the base and can be directly applied to any choice of base consistent with the fibration. As a demonstration we scan for globally consistent F-theory vacua on $\mathbb P^3$, ${\rm Bl}_1\mathbb P^3$ and ${\rm Bl}_2 \mathbb{P}^3$, and find a globally consistent flux configuration with the chiral Standard Model spectrum plus an extra triplet pair, which may be lifted by a recombination process.

Discrete Gauge Symmetries by Higgsing in four-dimensional F-Theory Compactifications

We study F-Theory compactifications to four dimensions that exhibit discrete gauge symmetries. Geometrically these arise by deforming elliptic fibrations with two sections to a genus-one fibration with a bi-section. From a four-dimensional field-theory perspective they are remnant symmetries from a Higgsed U(1) gauge symmetry. We implement such symmetries in the presence of an additional SU(5) symmetry and associated matter fields, giving a geometric prescription for calculating the induced discrete charge for the matter curves and showing the absence of Yukawa couplings that are forbidden by this charge. We present a detailed map between the field theory and the geometry, including an identification of the Higgs field and the massless states before and after the Higgsing. Finally we show that the Higgsing of the U(1) induces a G-flux which precisely accounts for the change in the Calabi-Yau Euler number so as to leave the D3 tadpole invariant.

Fluxes in F-theory Compactifications on Genus-One Fibrations

We initiate the construction of gauge fluxes in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibrations which only have a multi-section as opposed to a section. F-theory on such spaces gives rise to discrete gauge symmetries in the effective action. We generalize the transversality conditions on gauge fluxes known for elliptic fibrations by taking into account the properties of the available multi-section. We test these general conditions by constructing all vertical gauge fluxes in a bisection model with gauge group SU(5) x Z2. The non-abelian anomalies are shown to vanish. These flux solutions are dynamically related to fluxes on a fibration with gauge group SU(5) x U(1) by a conifold transition. Considerations of flux quantization reveal an arithmetic constraint on certain intersection numbers on the base which must necessarily be satisfied in a smooth geometry. Combined with the proposed transversality conditions on the fluxes these conditions are shown to imply cancellation of the discrete Z2 gauge anomalies as required by general consistency considerations.

Hidden Selection Rules, M5-instantons and Fluxes in F-theory

We introduce a new approach to investigate the selection rules governing the contributions of fluxed M5-instantons to the F-theory four-dimensional effective action, with emphasis on the generation of charged matter F-terms. The structure of such couplings is unraveled by exploiting the perturbative and non-perturbative homological relations, introduced in our companion paper arXiv:1506.06764, which encode the interplay between the self-dual 3-form flux on the M5-brane, the background 4-form flux and certain fibral curves. The latter are wrapped by time-like M2-branes representing matter insertions in the instanton path integral. In particular, we clarify how fluxed M5-instantons detect the presence of geometrically massive $U(1)$s which are responsible for `hidden' selection rules. We discuss how for non-generic embeddings the M5-instanton can probe `locally massless' $U(1)$ symmetries if the rank of its Mordell-Weil group is enhanced compared to that of the bulk. As a phenomenological off-spring we propose a new type of non-perturbative corrections to Yukawa couplings which may change the rank of the Yukawa matrix. Along the way, we also gain new insights into the structure of massive $U(1)$ gauge fluxes in the stable degeneration limit.

preprint2015arXiv

Non-perturbative selection rules in F-theory

We discuss the structure of charged matter couplings in 4-dimensional F-theory compactifications. Charged matter is known to arise from M2-branes wrapping fibral curves on an elliptic or genus-one fibration Y. If a set of fibral curves satisfies a homological relation in the fibre homology, a coupling involving the states can arise without exponential volume suppression due to a splitting and joining of the M2-branes. If the fibral curves only sum to zero in the integral homology of the full fibration, no such coupling is possible. In this case an M2-instanton wrapping a 3-chain bounded by the fibral matter curves can induce a D-term which is volume suppressed. We elucidate the consequences of this pattern for the appearance of massive U(1) symmetries in F-theory and analyse the structure of discrete selection rules in the coupling sector. The weakly coupled analogue of said M2-instantons is worked out to be given by D1-F1 instantons. The generation of an exponentially suppressed F-term requires the formation of half-BPS bound states of M2 and M5-instantons. This effect and its description in terms of fluxed M5-instantons is discussed in a companion paper.

On Discrete Symmetries and Torsion Homology in F-Theory

We study the relation between discrete gauge symmetries in F-theory compactifications and torsion homology on the associated Calabi-Yau manifold. Focusing on the simplest example of a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, we show that there are two physically distinct ways that such a discrete gauge symmetry can arise. First, compactifications of M-Theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds which support a genus-one fibration with a bi-section are known to be dual to six-dimensional F-theory vacua with a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge symmetry. We show that the resulting five-dimensional theories do not have a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry but that the latter emerges only in the F-theory decompactification limit. Accordingly the genus-one fibred Calabi-Yau manifolds do not exhibit discrete torsion. Associated to the bi-section fibration is a Jacobian fibration which does support a section. Compactifying on these related but distinct varieties does lead to a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry in five dimensions and, accordingly, we find explicitly an associated discrete torsion. We identify the expected particle and membrane system of the discrete symmetry in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes and present a field-theory description of the physics for both cases in terms of circle reductions of six-dimensional theories. Our results and methods generalise straightforwardly to larger discrete symmetries and to four-dimensional compactifications.

Chow groups, Deligne cohomology and massless matter in F-theory

We propose a method to compute the exact number of charged localized massless matter states in an F-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau 4-fold with non-trivial 3-form data. Our starting point is the description of the 3-form data via Deligne cohomology. A refined cycle map allows us to specify concrete elements therein in terms of the second Chow group of the 4-fold, i.e. rational equivalence classes of algebraic 2-cycles. We use intersection theory within the Chow ring to extract from this data a line bundle class on the curves in the base of the fibration on which charged matter is localized. The associated cohomology groups are conjectured to count the exact massless spectrum, in agreement with general patterns in Type IIB compactifications with 7-branes. We exemplify our approach by calculating the massless spectrum in an SU(5) x U(1) toy model based on an elliptic 4-fold with an extra section. The explicit evaluation of the cohomology classes is performed with the help of the cohomCalg-algorithm by Blumenhagen et al.

Mordell-Weil Torsion and the Global Structure of Gauge Groups in F-theory

We study the global structure of the gauge group $G$ of F-theory compactified on an elliptic fibration $Y$. The global properties of $G$ are encoded in the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of rational sections of $Y$. Generalising the Shioda map to torsional sections we construct a specific integer divisor class on $Y$ as a fractional linear combination of the resolution divisors associated with the Cartan subalgebra of $G$. This divisor class can be interpreted as an element of the refined coweight lattice of the gauge group. As a result, the spectrum of admissible matter representations is strongly constrained and the gauge group is non-simply connected. We exemplify our results by a detailed analysis of the general elliptic fibration with Mordell-Weil group $\mathbb Z_2$ and $\mathbb Z_3$ as well as a further specialization to $\mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z_2$. Our analysis exploits the representation of these fibrations as hypersurfaces in toric geometry.

SU(5) Tops with Multiple U(1)s in F-theory

We study F-theory compactifications with up to two Abelian gauge group factors that are based on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds describable as generic hypersurfaces. Special emphasis is put on elliptic fibrations based on generic Bl^2 P^2[3]-fibrations. These exhibit a Mordell-Weil group of rank two corresponding to two extra rational sections which give rise to two Abelian gauge group factors. We show that an alternative description of the same geometry as a complete intersection makes the existence of a holomorphic zero-section manifest, on the basis of which we compute the U(1) generators and a class of gauge fluxes. We analyse the fibre degenerations responsible for the appearance of localised charged matter states, whose charges, interactions and chiral index we compute geometrically. We implement an additional SU(5) gauge group by constructing the four inequivalent toric tops giving rise to SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetry and analyse the matter content. We demonstrate that notorious non-flat points can be avoided in well-defined Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These methods are applied to the remaining possible hypersurface fibrations with one generic Abelian gauge factor. We analyse the local limit of our SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) models and show that one of our models is not embeddable into E8 due to recombination of matter curves that cannot be described as a Higgsing of E8. We argue that such recombination forms a general mechanism that opens up new model building possibilities in F-theory.

Towards large r from [p,q]-inflation

The recent discovery of B-mode polarizations in the CMB by the BICEP2 collaboration motivates the study of large-field inflation models which can naturally lead to significant tensor-to-scalar ratios. A class of such models in string theory are axion monodromy models, where the shift symmetry of an axion is broken by some branes. In type IIB string theory such models so far utilized NS5 branes which lead to a linear potential with an induced tensor-to-scalar ratio of $r \sim 0.07$. In this short note we study a modification of the scenario to include [p,q] 7-branes and show that this leads to an enhanced tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \sim 0.14$. Unlike 5-branes, 7-branes are in-principle compatible with supersymmetry, however we find that an implementation of the inflationary scenario requires an explicit breaking of supersymmetry by the 7-branes during inflation. This leads to similar challenges as in 5-brane models. We discuss the relation to high-scale supersymmetry breaking after inflation.

Towards the Standard Model in F-theory

This article explores possible embeddings of the Standard Model gauge group and its matter representations into F-theory. To this end we construct elliptic fibrations with gauge group SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)xU(1) as suitable restrictions of a ${\rm Bl}_2{\mathbb P}^2$-fibration with rank-two Mordell-Weil group. We analyse the five inequivalent toric enhancements to gauge group SU(3)xSU(2) along two independent divisors W_3 and W_2 in the base. For each of the resulting smooth fibrations, the representation spectrum generically consists of a bifundamental (3,2), three types of (1,2) representations and five types of (3,1) representations (plus conjugates), in addition to charged singlet states. The precise spectrum of zero-modes in these representations depends on the 3-form background. We analyse the geometrically realised Yukawa couplings among all these states and find complete agreement with field theoretic expectations based on their U(1) charges. We classify possible identifications of the found representations with the Standard Model field content extended by right-handed neutrinos and extra singlets. The linear combination of the two abelian gauge group factors orthogonal to hypercharge acts as a selection rule which, depending on the specific model, can forbid dangerous dimension-four and -five proton decay operators.

Elliptic fibrations for SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) F-theory vacua

Elliptic Calabi-Yau fibrations with Mordell-Weil group of rank two are constructed. Such geometries are the basis for F-theory compactifications with two abelian gauge groups in addition to non-abelian gauge symmetry. We present the elliptic fibre both as a Bl^2P^2[3]-fibration and in the birationally equivalent Weierstrass form. The spectrum of charged singlets and their Yukawa interactions are worked out in generality. This framework can be combined with the toric construction of tops to implement additional non-abelian gauge groups. We utilise the classification of tops to construct SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetries systematically and study the resulting geometries, presenting the defining equations, the matter curves and their charges, the Yukawa couplings and explaining the process in detail for an example. Brane recombination relates these geometries to a Bl^1P^2[3]-fibration with a corresponding class of SU(5) x U(1) models. We also present the SU(5) tops based on the elliptic fibre Bl^1P_[1,1,2][4], corresponding to another class of SU(5) x U(1) models.

Fluxbranes: Moduli Stabilisation and Inflation

Fluxbrane inflation is a stringy version of D-term inflation in which two fluxed D7-branes move towards each other until their (relative) gauge flux annihilates. Compared to brane-antibrane inflation, the leading-order inflationary potential of this scenario is much flatter. In the present paper we first discuss a new explicit moduli stabilisation procedure combining the F- and D-term scalar potentials: It is based on fluxed D7-branes in a geometry with three large four-cycles of hierarchically different volumes. Subsequently, we combine this moduli stabilisation with the fluxbrane inflation idea, demonstrating in particular that CMB data (including cosmic string constraints) can be explained within our setup of hierarchical large volume CY compactifications. We also indicate how the eta-problem is expected to re-emerge through higher-order corrections and how it might be overcome by further refinements of our model. Finally, we explain why recently raised concerns about constant FI terms do not affect the consistent, string-derived variant of D-term inflation discussed in this paper.

Hypercharge Flux in IIB and F-theory: Anomalies and Gauge Coupling Unification

We analyse hypercharge flux GUT breaking in F-theory/Type IIB GUT models with regards to its implications for anomaly cancellation and gauge coupling unification. To this aim we exploit the Type IIB limit and consider 7-brane configurations that for the first time are guaranteed to exhibit net hypercharge flux restriction to matter curves. We show that local F-theory models with anomalies of type U(1)_Y-U(1)^2 in the massless spectrum can be consistent only if such additional U(1)s are globally geometrically massive (in the sense that they arise from non-Kahler deformations of the Calabi-Yau four-fold). Further, in such cases of geometrically massive U(1)s hypercharge flux can induce new anomalies of type U(1)_Y^2-U(1) in the massless spectrum, violating constraints in local models forbidding such anomalies. In particular this implies that it is possible to construct models exhibiting a U(1)_{PQ} global symmetry which have hypercharge flux doublet-triplet splitting and no further exotics. We also show that the known hypercharge flux induced splitting of the gauge couplings in IIB models at tree-level can be reduced by a factor of 5 by employing a more F-theoretic twisting of U(1) flux by hypercharge flux bringing it to well within MSSM 2-loop results. In the case of net restriction of hypercharge flux to matter curves this tree-level splitting becomes more involved, is tied to the vacuum expectation values of certain closed-string fields, and therefore gauge coupling unification becomes tied to the question of moduli stabilisation.

The Higgs mass from a String-Theoretic Perspective

The Higgs quartic coupling has now been indirectly measured at the electroweak scale. Assuming no new low-scale physics, its running is known and, together with gauge and Yukawa couplings, it is a crucial new piece of information constraining UV completions of the Standard Model. In particular, supersymmetry broken at an intermediate or high energy scale with tan(beta)=1 (i.e. lambda=0) is consistent with present data and has an independent theoretical appeal. We analyze the possible string-theoretic motivations for tan(beta)=1 (including both the shift-symmetry and the more economical variant of a Z_2 symmetry) in a Higgs sector realized on either 6- or 7-branes. We identify specific geometries where lambda ~ 0 may arise naturally and specify the geometrical problems which need to be solved to determine its precise value in the generic case. We then analyze the radiative corrections to lambda. Finally we show that, in contrast to naive expectations, lambda<0 at the SUSY breaking scale is also possible. Specifically, string theory may produce an MSSM plus chiral singlet at a very high scale, which immediately breaks to a non-SUSY Standard Model with lambda<0. This classically unstable theory then becomes metastable through running towards the IR.

U(1) symmetries in F-theory GUTs with multiple sections

We present a systematic construction of F-theory compactifications with Abelian gauge symmetries in addition to a non-Abelian gauge group G. The formalism is generally applicable to models in global Tate form but we focus on the phenomenologically interesting case of G=SU(5). The Abelian gauge factors arise due to extra global sections resulting from a specific factorisation of the Tate polynomial which describes the elliptic fibration. These constructions, which accommodate up to four different U(1) factors, are worked out in detail for the two possible embeddings of a single U(1) factor into E8, usually denoted SU(5) x U(1)_X and SU(5) x U(1)_PQ. The resolved models can be understood either patchwise via a small resolution or in terms of a P_{1,1,2}[4] description of the elliptic fibration. We derive the U(1) charges of the fields from the geometry, construct the U(1) gauge fluxes and exemplify the structure of the Yukawa interaction points. A particularly interesting result is that the global SU(5) x U(1)_PQ model exhibits extra SU(5)-singlet states which are incompatible with a single global decomposition of the 248 of E8. The states in turn lead to new Yukawa type couplings which have not been considered in local model building.

A Shift Symmetry in the Higgs Sector: Experimental Hints and Stringy Realizations

We interpret reported hints of a Standard Model Higgs boson at ~ 125 GeV in terms of high-scale supersymmetry breaking with a shift symmetry in the Higgs sector. More specifically, the Higgs mass range suggested by recent LHC data extrapolates, within the (non-supersymmetric) Standard Model, to a vanishing quartic Higgs coupling at a UV scale between 10^6 and 10^18 GeV. Such a small value of lambda can be understood in terms of models with high-scale SUSY breaking if the Kahler potential possesses a shift symmetry, i.e., if it depends on H_u and H_d only in the combination (H_u+\bar{H}_d). This symmetry is known to arise rather naturally in certain heterotic compactifications. We suggest that such a structure of the Higgs Kahler potential is common in a wider class of string constructions, including intersecting D7- and D6-brane models and their extensions to F-theory or M-theory. The latest LHC data may thus be interpreted as hinting to a particular class of compactifications which possess this shift symmetry.

Fluxed M5-instantons in F-theory

We analyse the non-perturbative superpotential due to M5-brane instantons in F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The M5 partition function is obtained via holomorphic factorisation by explicitly performing the sum over chiral 3-form fluxes. Comparison with the partition function of fluxed Euclidean D3-brane instantons in Type IIB orientifolds allows us to fix the spin structure on the intermediate Jacobian of the M5-instanton. We furthermore analyse the contribution of the M5-instanton to the superpotential in the presence of G4 gauge flux, where the superpotential is dressed with matter fields. We explicitly evaluate the pullback of G4 onto the M5-brane as a measure for the presence of charged instanton zero modes. This accounts for the M5 charge both under massless U(1)s, if present, and under what corresponds in Type II language to geometrically massive U(1)s.

Gauge Fluxes in F-theory and Type IIB Orientifolds

We provide a detailed correspondence between G_4 gauge fluxes in F-theory compactifications with SU(n) and SU(n)x(1) gauge symmetry and their Type IIB orientifold limit. Based on the resolution of the relevant F-theory Tate models we classify the factorisable G_4-fluxes and match them with the set of universal D5-tadpole free U(1)-fluxes in Type IIB. Where available, the global version of the universal spectral cover flux corresponds to Type IIB gauge flux associated with a massive diagonal U(1). In U(1)-restricted Tate models extra massless abelian fluxes exist which are associated with specific linear combinations of Type IIB fluxes. Key to a quantitative match between F-theory and Type IIB is a proper treatment of the conifold singularity encountered in the Sen limit of generic F-theory models. We also shed further light on the brane recombination process relating generic and U(1)-restricted Tate models.

Fluxbrane Inflation

As a first step towards inflation in genuinely F-theoretic setups, we propose a scenario where the inflaton is the relative position of two 7-branes on holomorphic 4-cycles. Non-supersymmetric gauge flux induces an attractive inter-brane potential. The latter is sufficiently flat in the supergravity regime of large volume moduli. Thus, in contrast to brane-antibrane inflation, fluxbrane inflation does not require warping. We calculate the inflaton potential both in the supergravity approximation and via an open-string one-loop computation on toroidal backgrounds. This leads us to propose a generalisation to genuine Calabi-Yau manifolds. We also comment on competing F-term effects. The end of inflation is marked by the condensation of tachyonic recombination fields between the 7-branes, triggering the formation of a bound state described as a stable extension along the 7-brane divisor. Hence our model fits in the framework of hybrid D-term inflation. We work out the main phenomenological properties of our D-term inflaton potential. In particular, our scenario of D7/D7 inflation avoids the familiar observational constraints associated with cosmic strings.

G_4 flux, chiral matter and singularity resolution in F-theory compactifications

We construct a set of chirality inducing G_4-fluxes in global F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds. Special emphasis is put on models with gauge group SU(5) x U(1)_X relevant in the context of F-theory GUT model building, which are described in terms of a U(1)-restricted Tate model. In this type of constructions, the G_4-flux arises in a manner completely analogous to the U(1)_X gauge potential. We describe in detail the resolution by blow-up of the various singularities responsible for the U(1)_X factor and the standard SU(5) gauge group and match the result with techniques applied in the context of toric geometry. This provides an explicit identification of the structure of the resolved fibre over the matter curves and over the enhancement points relevant for Yukawa couplings. The U(1)_X flux induces a chiral matter spectrum. We compute the chiral index both of SU(5) charged matter and of SU(5) singlets charged only under U(1)_X localised on curves which are not contained in the SU(5) locus. We furthermore discuss global consistency conditions such as D3-tadpole cancellation, D-term supersymmetry and Freed-Witten quantisation. The U(1)_X gauge flux is a global extension of a class of split spectral cover bundles. It constitutes an essential ingredient in the construction of globally defined F-theory compactifications with chiral matter. We exemplify this in a three-generation SU(5) x U(1)_X model whose flux satisfies all of the above global consistency conditions. We also extend our results to chiral fluxes in models without U(1) restriction.

Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory

F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.

On Fluxed Instantons and Moduli Stabilisation in IIB Orientifolds and F-theory

We study the superpotential induced by Euclidean D3-brane instantons carrying instanton flux, with special emphasis on its significance for the stabilisation of Kahler moduli and Neveu-Schwarz axions in Type IIB orientifolds. Quite generally, once a chiral observable sector is included in the compactification, arising on intersecting D7-branes with world-volume flux, resulting charged instanton zero modes prevent a class of instantons from participating in moduli stabilisation. We show that instanton flux on Euclidean D3-branes can remove these extra zero modes and helps in reinstating full moduli stabilisation within a geometric regime. We comment also on the F-theoretic description of this effect of alleviating the general tension between moduli stabilisation and chirality. In addition we propose an alternative solution to this problem based on dressing the instantons with charged matter fields which is unique to F-theory and cannot be realised in the weak coupling limit.

The effective action of D6-branes in N=1 type IIA orientifolds

We use a Kaluza-Klein reduction to compute the low-energy effective action for the massless modes of a spacetime-filling D6-brane wrapped on a special Lagrangian 3-cycle of a type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifold. The modifications to the characteristic data of the N=1 bulk orientifold theory in the presence of a D6-brane are analysed by studying the underlying Type IIA supergravity coupled to the brane worldvolume in the democratic formulation and performing a detailed dualisation procedure. The N=1 chiral coordinates are found to be in agreement with expectations from mirror symmetry. We work out the Kahler potential for the chiral superfields as well as the gauge kinetic functions for the bulk and the brane gauge multiplets including the kinetic mixing between the two. The scalar potential resulting from the dualisation procedure can be formally interpreted in terms of a superpotential. Finally, the gauging of the Peccei-Quinn shift symmetries of the complex structure multiplets reproduces the D-term potential enforcing the calibration condition for special Lagrangian 3-cycles.

Lectures on F-theory compactifications and model building

These lecture notes are devoted to formal and phenomenological aspects of F-theory. We begin with a pedagogical introduction to the general concepts of F-theory, covering classic topics such as the connection to Type IIB orientifolds, the geometry of elliptic fibrations and the emergence of gauge groups, matter and Yukawa couplings. As a suitable framework for the construction of compact F-theory vacua we describe a special class of Weierstrass models called Tate models, whose local properties are captured by the spectral cover construction. Armed with this technology we proceed with a survey of F-theory GUT models, aiming at an overview of basic conceptual and phenomenological aspects, in particular in connection with GUT breaking via hypercharge flux.

On Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Proton Decay in Global F-theory GUTs

The existence of abelian gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications depends on the global geometry of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold and has important phenomenological consequences. We study conceptual and phenomenological aspects of such U(1) symmetries along the Coulomb and the Higgs branch. As one application we examine abelian gauge factors arising after a certain global restriction of the Tate model that goes beyond a local spectral cover analysis. In SU(5) GUT models this mechanism enforces a global U(1)_X symmetry that prevents dimension-4 proton decay and allows for an identification of candidate right-handed neutrinos. We invoke a detailed account of the singularities of Calabi-Yau fourfolds and their mirror duals starting from an underlying E_8 and E_7 x U(1) enhanced Tate model. The global resolutions and deformations of these singularities can be used as the appropriate framework to analyse F-theory GUT models.

F-Theory GUT Vacua on Compact Calabi-Yau Fourfolds

We present compact three-generation F-theory GUT models meeting in particular the constraints of D3-tadpole cancellation and D-term supersymmetry. To this end we explicitly construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds as complete intersections in a toric ambient space. Toric methods enable us to control the singular geometry of the SU(5) GUT model. The GUT brane wraps a non-generic del Pezzo surface admitting GUT symmetry breaking via hypercharge flux. It is contractible to a curve and we demonstrate the existence of a consistent decoupling limit. We compute the Euler characteristic of the singular Calabi-Yau fourfold to show that our three-generation flux solutions obtained via the spectral cover construction are consistent with D3-tadpole cancellation.

Global F-theory GUTs

We construct global F-theory GUT models on del Pezzo surfaces in compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds realized as complete intersections of two hypersurface constraints. The intersections of the GUT brane and the flavour branes as well as the gauge flux are described by the spectral cover construction. We consider a split S[U(4) x U(1)_X] spectral cover, which allows for the phenomenologically relevant Yukawa couplings and GUT breaking to the MSSM via hypercharge flux while preventing dimension-4 proton decay. General expressions for the massless spectrum, consistency conditions and a new method for the computation of curvature-induced tadpoles are presented. We also provide a geometric toolkit for further model searches in the framework of toric geometry. Finally, an explicit global model with three chiral generations and all required Yukawa couplings is defined on a Calabi-Yau fourfold which is fibered over the del Pezzo transition of the Fano threefold P^4[4].

Massless Spectra of Three Generation U(N) Heterotic String Vacua

We provide the methods to compute the complete massless spectra of a class of recently introduced supersymmetric E8 x E8 heterotic string models which invoke vector bundles with U(N) structure group on simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds and which yield flipped SU(5) and MSSM string vacua of potential phenomenological interest. We apply Leray spectral sequences in order to derive the localisation of the cohomology groups H^i(X,V_a \times V_b), H^i(X,\bigwedge^2 V) and H^i(X,{\bf S}^2 V) for vector bundles defined via Fourier-Mukai transforms on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. By the method of bundle extensions we define a stable U(4) vector bundle leading to the first flipped SU(5) model with just three generations, i.e. without any vector-like matter. Along the way, we propose the notion of Lambda-stability for heterotic bundles.

Non-Abelian Brane Worlds: The Heterotic String Story

We discuss chiral supersymmetric compactifications of the SO(32) heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with direct sums of stable bundles with structure group U(n). In addition we allow for non-perturbative heterotic five-branes. These models are S-dual to Type I compactifications with D9- and D5-branes, which by themselves are mirror symmetric to general intersecting D6-brane models. For the construction of concrete examples we consider elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with SU(n) bundles given by the spectral cover construction. The U(n) bundles are obtained via twisting by line bundles. We present a four-generation Pati-Salam and a three-generation Standard-like model.
