The Tadpole Conjecture in Asymptotic Limits

The tadpole conjecture suggests that the complete stabilization of complex structure deformations in Type IIB and F-theory flux compactifications is severely obstructed by the tadpole bound on the fluxes. More precisely, it states that the stabilization of a large number of moduli requires a flux background with a tadpole that scales linearly in the number of stabilized fields. Restricting to the asymptotic regions of the complex structure moduli space, we give the first conceptual argument that explains this linear scaling setting and clarifies why it sets in only for a large number of stabilized moduli. Our approach relies on the use of asymptotic Hodge theory. In particular, we use the fact that in each asymptotic regime an orthogonal sl(2)-block structure emerges that allows us to group fluxes into sl(2)-representations and decouple complex structure directions. We show that the number of stabilized moduli scales with the number of sl(2)-representations supported by fluxes, and that each representation fixes a single modulus. Furthermore, we find that for Calabi-Yau four-folds all but one representation can be identified with representations occurring on two-folds. This allows us to discuss moduli stabilization explicitly and establish the relevant scaling constraints for the tadpole.

Bulk Reconstruction in Moduli Space Holography

It was recently suggested that certain UV-completable supersymmetric actions can be characterized by the solutions to an auxiliary non-linear sigma-model with special asymptotic boundary conditions. The space-time of this sigma-model is the scalar field space of these effective theories while the target space is a coset space. We study this sigma-model without any reference to a potentially underlying geometric description. Using a holographic approach reminiscent of the bulk reconstruction in the AdS/CFT correspondence, we then derive its near-boundary solutions for a two-dimensional space-time. Specifying a set of $ Sl(2,\mathbb{R})$ boundary data we show that the near-boundary solutions are uniquely fixed after imposing a single bulk-boundary matching condition. The reconstruction exploits an elaborate set of recursion relations introduced by Cattani, Kaplan, and Schmid in the proof of the $Sl(2)$-orbit theorem. We explicitly solve these recursion relations for three sets of simple boundary data and show that they model asymptotic periods of a Calabi--Yau threefold near the conifold point, the large complex structure point, and the Tyurin degeneration.

Deformed WZW Models and Hodge Theory -- Part I

We investigate a relationship between a particular class of two-dimensional integrable non-linear $σ$-models and variations of Hodge structures. Concretely, our aim is to study the classical dynamics of the $λ$-deformed $G/G$ model and show that a special class of solutions to its equations of motion precisely describes a one-parameter variation of Hodge structures. We find that this special class is obtained by identifying the group-valued field of the $σ$-model with the Weil operator of the Hodge structure. In this way, the study of strings on classifying spaces of Hodge structures suggests an interesting connection between the broad field of integrable models and the mathematical study of period mappings.

Moduli Stabilization in Asymptotic Flux Compactifications

We present a novel strategy to systematically study complex-structure moduli stabilization in Type IIB and F-theory flux compactifications. In particular, we determine vacua in any asymptotic regime of the complex-structure moduli space by exploiting powerful tools of asymptotic Hodge theory. In a leading approximation the moduli dependence of the vacuum conditions are shown to be polynomial with a dependence given by sl(2)-weights of the fluxes. This simple algebraic dependence can be extracted in any asymptotic regime, even though in nearly all asymptotic regimes essential exponential corrections have to be present for consistency. We give a pedagogical introduction to the sl(2)-approximation as well as a detailed step-by-step procedure for constructing the corresponding Hodge star operator. To exemplify the construction, we present a detailed analysis of several Calabi-Yau three- and fourfold examples. For these examples we illustrate that the vacua in the sl(2)-approximation match the vacua obtained with all polynomial and essential exponential corrections rather well, and we determine the behaviour of the tadpole contribution of the fluxes. Finally, we discuss the structure of vacuum loci and their relations to several swampland conjectures. In particular, we comment on the realization of the so-called linear scenario in view of the tadpole conjecture.

Infinite Distances and the Axion Weak Gravity Conjecture

The axion Weak Gravity Conjecture implies that when parametrically increasing the axion decay constants, instanton corrections become increasingly important. We provide strong evidence for the validity of this conjecture by studying the couplings of R-R axions arising in Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type IIA string theory. Specifically, we consider all possible infinite distance limits in complex structure moduli space and identify the axion decay constants that grow parametrically in a certain path-independent way. We then argue that for each of these limits a tower of D2-brane instantons with decreasing actions can be identified. These instantons ensure that the convex hull condition relevant for the multi-axion Weak Gravity Conjecture cannot be violated parametrically. To argue for the existence of such instantons we employ and generalize recent insights about the Swampland Distance Conjecture. Our results are general and not restricted to specific examples, since we use general results about the growth of the Hodge metric and the sl(2)-splittings of the three-form cohomology associated to each limit.

Chiral anomalies on a circle and their cancellation in F-theory

We study in detail how four-dimensional local anomalies manifest themselves when the theory is compactified on a circle. By integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes in a way that preserves the four-dimensional symmetries in the UV, we show that the three-dimensional theory contains field-dependent Chern-Simons terms that appear at one-loop. These vanish if and only if the four-dimensional anomaly is canceled, so the anomaly is not lost upon compactification. We extend this analysis to situations where anomalies are canceled through a Green-Schwarz mechanism. We then use these results to show automatic cancellation of local anomalies in F-theory compactifications that can be obtained as a limit of M-theory on a smooth Calabi-Yau fourfold with background flux.

One-modulus Calabi-Yau fourfold reductions with higher-derivative terms

In this note we consider M-theory compactified on a warped Calabi-Yau fourfold including the eight-derivative terms in the eleven-dimensional action known in the literature. We dimensionally reduce this theory on geometries with one Kahler modulus and determine the resulting three-dimensional Kahler potential and complex coordinate. The logarithmic form of the corrections suggests that they might admit a physical interpretation in terms of one-loop corrections to the effective action. Including only the known terms the no-scale condition in three dimensions is broken, but we discuss caveats to this conclusion. In particular, we consider additional new eight-derivative terms in eleven dimensions and show that they are strongly constrained by compatibility with the Calabi-Yau threefold reduction. We examine their impact on the Calabi-Yau fourfold reduction and the restoration of the no-scale property.

Anomaly Cancelation in Field Theory and F-theory on a Circle

We study the manifestation of local gauge anomalies of four- and six-dimensional field theories in the lower-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory obtained after circle compactification. We identify a convenient set of transformations acting on the whole tower of massless and massive states and investigate their action on the low-energy effective theories in the Coulomb branch. The maps employ higher-dimensional large gauge transformations and precisely yield the anomaly cancelation conditions when acting on the one-loop induced Chern-Simons terms in the three- and five-dimensional effective theory. The arising symmetries are argued to play a key role in the study of the M-theory to F-theory limit on Calabi-Yau manifolds. For example, using the fact that all fully resolved F-theory geometries inducing multiple Abelian gauge groups or non-Abelian groups admit a certain set of symmetries, we are able to generally show the cancelation of pure Abelian or pure non-Abelian anomalies in these models.

Complete Intersection Fibers in F-Theory

Global F-theory compactifications whose fibers are realized as complete intersections form a richer set of models than just hypersurfaces. The detailed study of the physics associated with such geometries depends crucially on being able to put the elliptic fiber into Weierstrass form. While such a transformation is always guaranteed to exist, its explicit form is only known in a few special cases. We present a general algorithm for computing the Weierstrass form of elliptic curves defined as complete intersections of different codimensions and use it to solve all cases of complete intersections of two equations in an ambient toric variety. Using this result, we determine the toric Mordell-Weil groups of all 3134 nef partitions obtained from the 4319 three-dimensional reflexive polytopes and find new groups that do not exist for toric hypersurfaces. As an application, we construct several models that cannot be realized as toric hypersurfaces, such as the first toric SU(5) GUT model in the literature with distinctly charged 10 representations and an F-theory model with discrete gauge group Z_4 whose dual fiber has a Mordell-Weil group with Z_4 torsion.

Non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in F-theory

The presence of non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications is investigated. Such symmetries are shown to arise from seven-brane configurations in genuine F-theory settings without a weak string coupling description. Gauge fields on mutually non-local seven-branes are argued to gauge both R-R and NS-NS two-form bulk axions. The gauging is completed into a generalisation of the Heisenberg group with either additional seven-brane gauge fields or R-R bulk gauge fields. The former case relies on having seven-brane fluxes, while the latter case requires torsion cohomology and is analysed in detail through the M-theory dual. Remarkably, the M-theory reduction yields an Abelian theory that becomes non-Abelian when translated into the correct duality frame to perform the F-theory limit. The reduction shows that the gauge coupling function depends on the gauged scalars and transforms non-trivially as required for the groups encountered. This field dependence agrees with the expectations for the kinetic mixing of seven-branes and is unchanged if the gaugings are absent.

On dualities for non-Abelian gauge theories with continuous center

Formulating gauge theories for gauge groups admitting a continuous center can require to include charged scalars to define a gauge-coupling function. We show that the gauge-fields in the center can be dualized into form-fields of dimension-dependent degree. The resulting theory admits a smaller gauge group that factorizes out the center, but contains a Chern-Simons type term coupling the scalars to the form-fields. As an explicit example we consider the gauge group being the Heisenberg group and show that the dual action only admits an Abelian gauge symmetry. We comment on the vacuum symmetries in these settings, their supersymmetrization, and point out their importance in string theory.

The Arithmetic of Elliptic Fibrations in Gauge Theories on a Circle

The geometry of elliptic fibrations translates to the physics of gauge theories in F-theory. We systematically develop the dictionary between arithmetic structures on elliptic curves as well as desingularized elliptic fibrations and symmetries of gauge theories on a circle. We show that the Mordell-Weil group law matches integral large gauge transformations around the circle in Abelian gauge theories and explain the significance of Mordell-Weil torsion in this context. We also use Higgs transitions and circle large gauge transformations to introduce a group law for genus-one fibrations with multi-sections. Finally, we introduce a novel arithmetic structure on elliptic fibrations with non-Abelian gauge groups in F-theory. It is defined on the set of exceptional divisors resolving the singularities and divisor classes of sections of the fibration. This group structure can be matched with certain integral non-Abelian large gauge transformations around the circle when studying the theory on the lower-dimensional Coulomb branch. Its existence is required by consistency with Higgs transitions from the non-Abelian theory to its Abelian phases in which it becomes the Mordell-Weil group. This hints towards the existence of a new underlying geometric symmetry.

The effective action of warped M-theory reductions with higher-derivative terms - Part II

We study the three-dimensional effective action obtained by reducing eleven-dimensional supergravity with higher-derivative terms on a background solution including a warp-factor, an eight-dimensional compact manifold, and fluxes. The dynamical fields are Kähler deformations and vectors from the M-theory three-form. We show that the potential is only induced by fluxes and the naive contributions obtained from higher-curvature terms on a Calabi-Yau background vanish once the back-reaction to the full solution is taken into account. For the resulting three-dimensional action we analyse the Kähler potential and complex coordinates and show compatibility with N=2 supersymmetry. We argue that the higher-order result is also compatible with a no-scale condition. We find that the complex coordinates should be formulated as divisor integrals for which a non-trivial interplay between the warp-factor terms and the higher-curvature terms allow a derivation of the moduli space metric. This leads us to discuss higher-derivative corrections to the M5-brane action.

On M-theory fourfold vacua with higher curvature terms

We study solutions to the eleven-dimensional supergravity action, including terms quartic and cubic in the Riemann curvature, that admit an eight-dimensional compact space. The internal background is found to be a conformally Kahler manifold with vanishing first Chern class. The metric solution, however, is non-Ricci-flat even when allowing for a conformal rescaling including the warp factor. This deviation is due to the possible non-harmonicity of the third Chern-form in the leading order Ricci-flat metric. We present a systematic derivation of the background solution by solving the Killing spinor conditions including higher curvature terms. These are translated into first-order differential equations for a globally defined real two-form and complex four-form on the fourfold. We comment on the supersymmetry properties of the described solutions.

Partial Supergravity Breaking and the Effective Action of Consistent Truncations

We study vacua of N = 4 half-maximal gauged supergravity in five dimensions and determine crucial properties of the effective theory around the vacuum. The main focus is on configurations with exactly two broken supersymmetries, since they frequently appear in consistent truncations of string theory and supergravity. Evaluating one-loop corrections to the Chern-Simons terms we find necessary conditions to ensure that a consistent truncation also gives rise to a proper effective action of an underlying more fundamental theory. To obtain concrete examples, we determine the N=4 action of M-theory on six-dimensional SU(2)-structure manifolds with background fluxes. Calabi-Yau threefolds with vanishing Euler number are examples of SU(2)-structure manifolds that yield N=2 Minkowski vacua. We find that that one-loop corrections to the Chern-Simons terms vanish trivially and thus do not impose constraints on identifying effective theories. This result is traced back to the absence of isometries on these geometries. Examples with isometries arise from type IIB supergravity on squashed Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. In this case the one-loop gauge Chern-Simons terms vanish due to non-trivial cancellations, while the one-loop gravitational Chern-Simons terms are non-zero.

Self-Dual Tensors and Partial Supersymmetry Breaking in Five Dimensions

We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking of five-dimensional supergravity theories from sixteen to eight supercharges in Minkowski vacua. This N=4 to N=2 breaking is induced by Abelian gaugings that require the introduction of self-dual tensor fields accompanying the vectors in the gravity multiplet and vector multiplets. These tensor fields have first-order kinetic terms and can become massive by a Stueckelberg-like mechanism. We identify the general class of N=2 vacua and show how the N=4 spectrum splits into massless and massive N=2 multiplets. In particular, we find a massive gravitino multiplet, containing two complex massive tensors, and a number of massive tensor multiplets and hypermultiplets. We determine the resulting N=2 effective action for the massless multiplets obtained by integrating out massive fields. We show that the metric and Chern-Simons terms of the vectors are corrected at one-loop by massive tensors as well as spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 fermions. These contributions are independent of the supersymmetry-breaking scale and thus have to be included at arbitrarily low energies.

Special Points of Inflation in Flux Compactifications

We study the realisation of axion inflation models in the complex structure moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds. The axions arise close to special points of these moduli spaces that admit discrete monodromy symmetries of infinite order. Examples include the large complex structure point and conifold point, but can be of more general nature. In Type IIB and F-theory compactifications the geometric axions receive a scalar potential from a flux-induced superpotential. We find toy variants of various inflationary potentials including the ones for natural inflation of one or multiple axions, or axion monodromy inflation with polynomial potential. Interesting examples are also given by mirror geometries of torus fibrations with Mordell-Weil group of rank $N-1$ or an $N$-section, which admit an axion if $N>3$.

The effective action of warped M-theory reductions with higher derivative terms - Part I

M-theory accessed via eleven-dimensional supergravity admits globally consistent warped solutions with eight-dimensional compact spaces if background fluxes and higher derivative terms are considered. The internal background is conformally Kähler with vanishing first Chern class. We perturb these solutions including a finite number of Kähler deformations of the metric and vector deformations of the M-theory three-form. Special emphasis is given to the field-dependence of the warp-factor and the higher-derivative terms. We show that the three-dimensional two-derivative effective action takes a surprisingly simple form in terms of a single higher-curvature building block due to numerous non-trivial cancellations. Both the ansatz and the effective action admit a moduli dependent scaling symmetry of the internal metric. Furthermore, we find that the required departure from Ricci-flatness and harmonicity of the zero-mode eigenforms does not alter the effective theory.

Yukawas and discrete symmetries in F-theory compactifications without section

In the case of F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibrations without section there are naturally appearing discrete symmetries, which we argue to be associated to geometrically massive U(1) gauge symmetries. These discrete symmetries are shown to induce non-trivial selection rules for the allowed Yukawa couplings in SU(N) gauge theories. The general discussion is exemplified using a concrete Calabi-Yau fourfold realizing an SU(5) GUT model. We observe that M2 instanton effects appear to play a key role in the generation of new superpotential terms and in the dynamics close to phase transition loci.

Effective action of 6D F-Theory with U(1) factors: Rational sections make Chern-Simons terms jump

We derive the six-dimensional (1,0) effective action arising from F-theory on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with multiple sections. The considered theories admit both non-Abelian and Abelian gauge symmetries. Our derivation employs the M-theory to F-theory duality in five-dimensions after circle reduction. Five-dimensional gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons terms are shown to arise at one-loop by integrating out massive Coulomb branch and Kaluza-Klein modes. In the presence of a non-holomorphic zero section, we find an improved systematic for performing the F-theory limit by using the concept of the extended relative Mori cone. In this situation Kaluza-Klein modes can become lighter than Coulomb branch modes and a jump in the Chern-Simons levels occurs. By determining Chern-Simons terms for various threefold examples we are able to compute the complete six-dimensional charged matter spectrum and show consistency with six-dimensional anomalies.

Exploring 6D origins of 5D supergravities with Chern-Simons terms

We consider five-dimensional supergravity theories with eight or sixteen supercharges with Abelian vector fields and ungauged scalars. We address the question under which conditions these theories can be interpreted as effective low energy descriptions of circle reductions of anomaly free six-dimensional theories with (1,0) or (2,0) supersymmetry. We argue that classical and one-loop gauge- and gravitational Chern-Simons terms are instrumental for this question.

F-Theory on Spin(7) Manifolds: Weak-Coupling Limit

F-theory on appropriately fibered Spin(7) holonomy manifolds is defined to arise as the dual of M-theory on the same space in the limit of a shrinking fiber. A class of Spin(7) orbifolds can be constructed as quotients of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds by an anti-holomorphic involution. The F-theory dual then exhibits one macroscopic dimension that has the topology of an interval. In this work we study the weak-coupling limit of a subclass of such constructions and identify the objects that arise in this limit. On the Type IIB side we find space-time filling O7-planes as well as O5-planes and orbifold five-planes with a (-1)^{F_L} factor localised on the interval boundaries. These orbifold planes are referred to as X5-planes and are S-dual to a D5-O5 system. For other involutions exotic O3-planes and X3-planes on top of a six-dimensional orbifold singularity can appear. We show that the objects present preserve a mutual supersymmetry of four supercharges in the bulk of the interval and two supercharges on the boundary. It follows that in the infinite-interval and weak-coupling limit full four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry is restored, which on the Type IIA side corresponds to an enhancement of supersymmetry by winding modes in the vanishing interval limit.

From M-theory higher curvature terms to α' corrections in F-theory

We perform a Kaluza-Klein reduction of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a Calabi-Yau fourfold including terms quartic and cubic in the Riemann curvature and determine the induced corrections to the three-dimensional N=2 effective action. We focus on the effective Einstein-Hilbert term and the kinetic terms for vectors. Dualizing the vectors into scalars, we derive the resulting Kahler potential and complex coordinates. The classical expressions for the Kahler coordinates are non-trivially modified, while the functional form of the Kahler potential is shown to be uncorrected. For elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds the corrections can be uplifted to a four-dimensional F-theory compactification. We argue that also the four-dimensional N=1 Kahler coordinates receive non-trivial corrections. We find a simple expression for the induced corrections for different Abelian and non-Abelian seven-brane configurations by scanning over many Calabi-Yau fourfolds with resolved singularities. The interpretation of this expression leads us to conjecture that the higher-curvature corrections correspond to α'^2 corrections that arise from open strings at the self-intersection of seven-branes.

Gauged supergravities and their symmetry-breaking vacua in F-theory

We first derive a class of six-dimensional (1,0) gauged supergravities arising from threefold compactifications of F-theory with background fluxes. The derivation proceeds via the M-theory dual reduction on an SU(3)-structure manifold with four-form G_4-flux. We then show that vacuum solutions of these six-dimensional theories describes four-dimensional flat space times a compact two-dimensional internal space with additional localized sources. This induces a spontaneous compactification to four space-time dimensions and breaks the supersymmetry from N=2 to N=1, which allows the reduced theory to have a four-dimensional chiral spectrum. We perform the reduction explicitly and derive the N=1 characteristic data of the four-dimensional effective theory. The match with fourfold reductions of F-theory is discussed and many of the characteristic features are compared. We comment, in particular, on warping effects and one-loop Chern-Simons terms generically present in four-dimensional F-theory reductions.

Geometric Engineering in Toric F-Theory and GUTs with U(1) Gauge Factors

An algorithm to systematically construct all Calabi-Yau elliptic fibrations realized as hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space for a given base and gauge group is described. This general method is applied to the particular question of constructing SU(5) GUTs with multiple U(1) gauge factors. The basic data consists of a top over each toric divisor in the base together with compactification data giving the embedding into a reflexive polytope. The allowed choices of compactification data are integral points in an auxiliary polytope. In order to ensure the existence of a low-energy gauge theory, the elliptic fibration must be flat, which is reformulated into conditions on the top and its embedding. In particular, flatness of SU(5) fourfolds imposes additional linear constraints on the auxiliary polytope of compactifications, and is therefore non-generic. Abelian gauge symmetries arising in toric F-theory compactifications are studied systematically. Associated to each top, the toric Mordell-Weil group determining the minimal number of U(1) factors is computed. Furthermore, all SU(5)-tops and their splitting types are determined and used to infer the pattern of U(1) matter charges.

New Global F-theory GUTs with U(1) symmetries

We construct global F-theory GUTs with SU(5) x U(1) gauge group defined by specifying a fully resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold and consistent four-form G-flux. Its specific U(1) charged matter spectrum allows the desired Yukawa couplings, but forbids dangerous proton decay operators. The model we find: (1) does not follow from an underlying higgsed E8 gauge group (2) leaves the class of theories that can be analyzed with current split-spectral cover techniques. This avoids recently proposed no-go theorems for models with hypercharge flux, as required to break the GUT group. The appearance of additional fields is related geometrically to considering a more general class of sections and 4-1 splits. We show explicitly that the four-dimensional chiral matter index can still be computed using three-dimensional one-loop Chern-Simons terms.

Non-Supersymmetric F-Theory Compactifications on Spin(7) Manifolds

We propose a novel approach to obtain non-supersymmetric four-dimensional effective actions by considering F-theory on manifolds with special holonomy Spin(7). To perform such studies we suggest that a duality relating M-theory on a certain class of Spin(7) manifolds with F-theory on the same manifolds times an interval exists. The Spin(7) geometries under consideration are constructed as quotients of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds by an anti-holomorphic and isometric involution. The three-dimensional minimally supersymmetric effective action of M-theory on a general Spin(7) manifold with fluxes is determined and specialized to the aforementioned geometries. This effective theory is compared with an interval Kaluza-Klein reduction of a non-supersymmetric four-dimensional theory with definite boundary conditions for all fields. Using this strategy a minimal set of couplings of the four-dimensional low-energy effective actions is obtained in terms of the Spin(7) geometric data. We also discuss briefly the string interpretation in the Type IIB weak coupling limit.

On α' corrections in N=1 F-theory compactifications

We consider N=1 F-theory and Type IIB orientifold compactifications and derive new α' corrections to the four-dimensional effective action. They originate from higher derivative corrections to eleven-dimensional supergravity and survive the M-theory to F-theory limit. We find a correction to the Kahler moduli depending on a non-trivial intersection curve of seven-branes. We also analyze a four-dimensional higher curvature correction.

One-loop Chern-Simons terms in five dimensions

We compute one-loop corrections to five-dimensional gauge and gravitational Chern-Simons terms induced by integrating out charged massive fields. The considered massive fields are spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 fermions, as well as complex two-forms with first order kinetic terms. Consistency with six-dimensional gravitational anomalies of (1,0) and (2,0) theories is shown by interpreting the massive fields as excited Kaluza-Klein modes in a circle compactification. The results are in accordance with the geometric predictions of the M-theory to F-theory duality as well as the comparison with an explicit one-loop computation in heterotic string theory compactified on K3 x S^1.

A Kaluza-Klein inspired action for chiral p-forms and their anomalies

The dynamics of chiral p-forms can be captured by a lower-dimensional parity-violating action motivated by a Kaluza-Klein reduction on a circle. The massless modes are (p-1)-forms with standard kinetic terms and Chern-Simons couplings to the Kaluza-Klein vector of the background metric. The massive modes are p-forms charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector and admit parity-odd first-order kinetic terms. Gauge invariance is implemented by a Stueckelberg-like mechanism using (p-1)-forms. A Chern-Simons term for the Kaluza-Klein vector is generated at one loop by massive p-form modes. These findings are shown to be consistent with anomalies and supersymmetry for six-dimensional supergravity theories with chiral tensor multiplets.

Anomaly Cancellation And Abelian Gauge Symmetries In F-theory

We study 4D F-theory compactifications on singular Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes. The resulting N=1 effective theories can admit non-Abelian and U(1) gauge groups as well as charged chiral matter. In these setups we analyze anomaly cancellation and the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism. This requires the study of 3D N=2 theories obtained by a circle compactification and their M-theory duals. Reducing M-theory on resolved Calabi-Yau fourfolds corresponds to considering the effective theory on the 3D Coulomb branch in which certain massive states are integrated out. Both 4D gaugings and 3D one-loop corrections of these massive states induce Chern-Simons terms. All 4D anomalies are captured by the one-loop terms. The ones corresponding to the mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies depend on the Kaluza-Klein vector and are induced by integrating out Kaluza-Klein modes of the U(1) charged matter. In M-theory all Chern-Simons terms classically arise from G_4-flux. We find that F-theory fluxes implement automatically the 4D Green-Schwarz mechanism if non-trivial geometric relations for the resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold are satisfied. We confirm these relations in various explicit examples and elucidate the general construction of U(1) symmetries in F-theory. We also compare anomaly cancellation in F-theory with its analog in Type IIB orientifold setups.

F-theory fluxes, Chirality and Chern-Simons theories

We study the charged chiral matter spectrum of four-dimensional F-theory compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds by using the dual M-theory description. A chiral spectrum can be induced by M-theory four-form flux on the fully resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold. In M-theory this flux yields three-dimensional Chern-Simons couplings in the Coulomb branch of the gauge theory. In the F-theory compactification on an additional circle these couplings are only generated by one-loop corrections with charged fermions running in the loop. This identification allows us to infer the net number of chiral matter fields of the four-dimensional effective theory. The chirality formulas can be evaluated by using the intersection numbers and the cones of effective curves of the resolved fourfolds. We argue that a study of the effective curves also allows to follow the resolution process at each co-dimension. To write simple chirality formulas we suggest to use the effective curves involved in the resolution process to determine the matter surfaces and to connect with the group theory at co-dimension two in the base. We exemplify our methods on examples with SU(5) and SU(5)xU(1) gauge group.

Fluxes and Warping for Gauge Couplings in F-theory

We compute flux-dependent corrections in the four-dimensional F-theory effective action using the M-theory dual description. In M-theory the 7-brane fluxes are encoded by four-form flux and modify the background geometry and Kaluza-Klein reduction ansatz. In particular, the flux sources a warp factor which also depends on the torus directions of the compactification fourfold. This dependence is crucial in the derivation of the four-dimensional action, although the torus fiber is auxiliary in F-theory. In M-theory the 7-branes are described by an infinite array of Taub-NUT spaces. We use the explicit metric on this geometry to derive the locally corrected warp factor and M-theory three-from as closed expressions. We focus on contributions to the 7-brane gauge coupling function from this M-theory back-reaction and show that terms quadratic in the internal seven-brane flux are induced. The real part of the gauge coupling function is modified by the M-theory warp factor while the imaginary part is corrected due to a modified M-theory three-form potential. The obtained contributions match the known weak string coupling result, but also yield additional terms suppressed at weak coupling. This shows that the completion of the M-theory reduction opens the way to compute various corrections in a genuine F-theory setting away from the weak string coupling limit.

Non-Abelian Tensor Towers and (2,0) Superconformal Theories

With the aim to study six-dimensional (2,0) superconformal theories with non-Abelian tensor multiplets we propose a five-dimensional superconformal action with eight supersymmetries for an infinite tower of non-Abelian vector, tensor and hypermultiplets. It describes the dynamics of the complete spectrum of the (2,0) theories compactified on a circle coupled to an additional vector multiplet containing the circle radius and the Kaluza-Klein vector arising from the six-dimensional metric. All couplings are only given in terms of group theoretical constants and the Kaluza-Klein levels. After superconformal symmetry is reduced to Poincare supersymmetry we find a Kaluza-Klein inspired action coupling super-Yang-Mills theory to an infinite tower of massive non-Abelian tensors. We explore the possibility to restore sixteen supersymmetries by using techniques known from harmonic superspace. Namely, additional bosonic coordinates on a four-sphere are introduced to enhance the R-symmetry group. Maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and the Abelian (2,0) tensor theories are recovered as special cases of our construction. Finally, we comment on the generation of an anomaly balancing Wess-Zumino term for the R-symmetry vector at one loop.

Six-dimensional (1,0) effective action of F-theory via M-theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds

The six-dimensional effective action of F-theory compactified on a singular elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefold is determined by using an M-theory lift. The low-energy data are derived by comparing a circle reduction of a general six-dimensional (1,0) gauged supergravity theory with the effective action of M-theory on the resolved Calabi-Yau threefold. The derivation includes six-dimensional tensor multiplets for which the (anti-) self-duality constraints are imposed on the level of the five-dimensional action. The vector sector of the reduced theory is encoded by a non-standard potential due to the Green-Schwarz term in six dimensions. This Green-Schwarz term also contains higher curvature couplings which are considered to establish the full map between anomaly coefficients and geometry. F-/M-theory duality is exploited by moving to the five-dimensional Coulomb branch after circle reduction and integrating out massive vector multiplets and matter hypermultiplets. The associated fermions then generate additional Chern-Simons couplings at one-loop. Further couplings involving the graviphoton are induced by quantum corrections due to excited Kaluza-Klein modes. On the M-theory side integrating out massive fields corresponds to resolving the singularities of the Calabi-Yau threefold, and yields intriguing relations between six-dimensional anomalies and classical topology.

Structure in 6D and 4D N=1 supergravity theories from F-theory

We explore some aspects of 4D supergravity theories and F-theory vacua that are parallel to structures in the space of 6D theories. The spectrum and topological terms in 4D supergravity theories correspond to topological data of F-theory geometry, just as in six dimensions. In particular, topological axion-curvature squared couplings appear in 4D theories; these couplings are characterized by vectors in the dual to the lattice of axion shift symmetries associated with string charges. These terms are analogous to the Green-Schwarz terms of 6D supergravity theories, though in 4D the terms are not generally linked with anomalies. We outline the correspondence between F-theory topology and data of the corresponding 4D supergravity theories. The correspondence of geometry with structure in the low-energy action illuminates topological aspects of heterotic-F-theory duality in 4D as well as in 6D. The existence of an F-theory realization also places geometrical constraints on the 4D supergravity theory in the large-volume limit.

Five-Brane Superpotentials, Blow-Up Geometries and SU(3) Structure Manifolds

We investigate the dynamics of space-time filling five-branes wrapped on curves in heterotic and orientifold Calabi-Yau compactifications. We first study the leading N=1 scalar potential on the infinite deformation space of the brane-curve around a supersymmetric configuration. The higher order potential is also determined by a brane superpotential which we compute for a subset of light deformations. We argue that these deformations map to new complex structure deformations of a non-Calabi-Yau manifold which is obtained by blowing up the brane-curve into a four-cycle and by replacing the brane by background fluxes. This translates the original brane-bulk system into a unifying geometrical formulation. Using this blow-up geometry we compute the complete set of open-closed Picard-Fuchs differential equations and identify the brane superpotential at special points in the field space for five-branes in toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. This has an interpretation in open mirror symmetry and enables us to list compact disk instanton invariants. As a first step towards promoting the blow-up geometry to a supersymmetric heterotic background we propose a non-Kaehler SU(3) structure and an identification of the three-form flux.

Gravitational Instantons and Fluxes from M/F-theory on Calabi-Yau fourfolds

We compactify four-dimensional N=1 gauged supergravity theories on a circle including fluxes for shift-symmetric scalars. Four-dimensional Taub-NUT gravitational instantons universally correct the three-dimensional superpotential in the absence of fluxes. In the presence of fluxes these Taub-NUT instanton contributions are no longer gauge-invariant. Invariance can be restored by gauge instantons on top of Taub-NUT instantons. We establish the embedding of this scenario into M-theory. Circle fluxes and gaugings arise from a restricted class of M-theory four-form fluxes on a resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold. The M5-brane on the base of the elliptic fourfold dualizes into the universal Taub-NUT instanton. In the presence of fluxes this M5-brane is anomalous. We argue that anomaly free contributions arise from involved M5-brane geometries dual to gauge-instantons on top of Taub-NUT instantons. Adding a four-dimensional superpotential to the gravitational instanton corrections leads to three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter vacua at stabilized compactification radius. We comment on the possibility to uplift these M-theory vacua, and to tunnel to four-dimensional F-theory vacua.

Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory

F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.

On Fluxed Instantons and Moduli Stabilisation in IIB Orientifolds and F-theory

We study the superpotential induced by Euclidean D3-brane instantons carrying instanton flux, with special emphasis on its significance for the stabilisation of Kahler moduli and Neveu-Schwarz axions in Type IIB orientifolds. Quite generally, once a chiral observable sector is included in the compactification, arising on intersecting D7-branes with world-volume flux, resulting charged instanton zero modes prevent a class of instantons from participating in moduli stabilisation. We show that instanton flux on Euclidean D3-branes can remove these extra zero modes and helps in reinstating full moduli stabilisation within a geometric regime. We comment also on the F-theoretic description of this effect of alleviating the general tension between moduli stabilisation and chirality. In addition we propose an alternative solution to this problem based on dressing the instantons with charged matter fields which is unique to F-theory and cannot be realised in the weak coupling limit.

The N=1 effective actions of D-branes in Type IIA and IIB orientifolds

We discuss the four-dimensional N=1 effective actions of single space-time filling Dp-branes in general Type IIA and Type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications. The effective actions depend on an infinite number of normal deformations and gauge connection modes. For D6-branes the N=1 Kaehler potential, the gauge-coupling function, the superpotential and the D-terms are determined as functions of these fields. They can be expressed as integrals over chains which end on the D-brane cycle and a reference cycle. The infinite deformation space will reduce to a finite-dimensional moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds upon imposing F- and D-term supersymmetry conditions. We show that the Type IIA moduli space geometry is captured by three real functionals encoding the deformations of special Lagrangian submanifolds, holomorphic three-forms and Kaehler two-forms of Calabi-Yau manifolds. These elegantly combine in the N=1 Kaehler potential, which reduces after applying mirror symmetry to the results previously determined for space-time filling D3-, D5- and D7-branes. We also propose general chain integral expressions for the Kaehler potentials of Type IIB D-branes.

Computing Brane and Flux Superpotentials in F-theory Compactifications

In four-dimensional F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry the fields describing the dynamics of space-time filling 7-branes are part of the complex structure moduli space of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold. We explicitly compute the flux superpotential in F-theory depending on all complex structure moduli, including the 7-brane deformations and the field corresponding to the dilaton-axion. Since fluxes on the 7-branes induce 5-brane charge, a local limit allows to effectively match the F-theory results to a D5-brane in a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with threeform fluxes. We analyze the classical and instanton contributions to the F-theory superpotential using mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The F-theory compactifications under consideration also admit heterotic dual descriptions and we discuss the identification of the moduli in this non-perturbative duality.

Five-Brane Superpotentials and Heterotic/F-theory Duality

Under heterotic/F-theory duality it was argued that a wide class of heterotic five-branes is mapped into the geometry of an F-theory compactification manifold. In four-dimensional compactifications this identifies a five-brane wrapped on a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a specific F-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold containing the blow-up of the five-brane curve. We argue that this duality can be reformulated by first constructing a non-Calabi-Yau heterotic threefold by blowing up the curve of the five-brane into a divisor with five-brane flux. Employing heterotic/F-theory duality this leads us to the construction of a Calabi-Yau fourfold and four-form flux. Moreover, we obtain an explicit map between the five-brane superpotential and an F-theory flux superpotential. The map of the open-closed deformation problem of a five-brane in a compact Calabi-Yau threefold into a deformation problem of complex structures on a dual Calabi-Yau fourfold with four-form flux provides a powerful tool to explicitly compute the five-brane superpotential.

On Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Proton Decay in Global F-theory GUTs

The existence of abelian gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications depends on the global geometry of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold and has important phenomenological consequences. We study conceptual and phenomenological aspects of such U(1) symmetries along the Coulomb and the Higgs branch. As one application we examine abelian gauge factors arising after a certain global restriction of the Tate model that goes beyond a local spectral cover analysis. In SU(5) GUT models this mechanism enforces a global U(1)_X symmetry that prevents dimension-4 proton decay and allows for an identification of candidate right-handed neutrinos. We invoke a detailed account of the singularities of Calabi-Yau fourfolds and their mirror duals starting from an underlying E_8 and E_7 x U(1) enhanced Tate model. The global resolutions and deformations of these singularities can be used as the appropriate framework to analyse F-theory GUT models.

The N=1 effective action of F-theory compactifications

The four-dimensional N=1 effective action of F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold is studied by lifting a three-dimensional M-theory compactification. The lift is performed by using T-duality realized via a Legendre transform on the level of the effective action, and the application of vector-scalar duality in three dimensions. The leading order Kahler potential and gauge-kinetic coupling functions are determined. In these compactifications two sources of gauge theories are present. Space-time filling non-Abelian seven-branes arise at the singularities of the elliptic fibration of the fourfold. Their couplings are included by resolving the singular fourfold. Generically a U(1)^r gauge theory arises from the R-R bulk sector if the base of the elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold supports 2r harmonic three-forms. The gauge coupling functions depend holomorphically on the complex structure moduli of the fourfold, comprising closed and open string degrees of freedom. The four-dimensional electro-magnetic duality is studied in the three-dimensional effective theory obtained after M-theory compactification. A discussion of matter couplings transforming in the adjoint of the seven-brane gauge group is included.

F-Theory GUT Vacua on Compact Calabi-Yau Fourfolds

We present compact three-generation F-theory GUT models meeting in particular the constraints of D3-tadpole cancellation and D-term supersymmetry. To this end we explicitly construct elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds as complete intersections in a toric ambient space. Toric methods enable us to control the singular geometry of the SU(5) GUT model. The GUT brane wraps a non-generic del Pezzo surface admitting GUT symmetry breaking via hypercharge flux. It is contractible to a curve and we demonstrate the existence of a consistent decoupling limit. We compute the Euler characteristic of the singular Calabi-Yau fourfold to show that our three-generation flux solutions obtained via the spectral cover construction are consistent with D3-tadpole cancellation.

Global F-theory GUTs

We construct global F-theory GUT models on del Pezzo surfaces in compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds realized as complete intersections of two hypersurface constraints. The intersections of the GUT brane and the flavour branes as well as the gauge flux are described by the spectral cover construction. We consider a split S[U(4) x U(1)_X] spectral cover, which allows for the phenomenologically relevant Yukawa couplings and GUT breaking to the MSSM via hypercharge flux while preventing dimension-4 proton decay. General expressions for the massless spectrum, consistency conditions and a new method for the computation of curvature-induced tadpoles are presented. We also provide a geometric toolkit for further model searches in the framework of toric geometry. Finally, an explicit global model with three chiral generations and all required Yukawa couplings is defined on a Calabi-Yau fourfold which is fibered over the del Pezzo transition of the Fano threefold P^4[4].

The D5-brane effective action and superpotential in N=1 compactifications

The four-dimensional effective action for D5-branes in generic compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds is computed by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The N=1 Kaehler potential, the superpotential, the gauge-kinetic coupling function and the D-terms are derived in terms of the geometric data of the internal space and of the two-cycle wrapped by the D5-brane. In particular, we obtain the D5-brane and flux superpotential by integrating out four-dimensional three-forms which couple via the Chern-Simons action. Also the infinitesimal complex structure deformations of the two-cycle induced by the deformations of the ambient space contribute to the F-terms. The superpotential can be expressed in terms of relative periods depending on both the open and closed moduli. To analyze this dependence we blow up along the two-cycle and obtain a rigid divisor in an auxiliary compact threefold with negative first Chern class. The variation of the mixed Hodge structure on this blown-up geometry is equivalent to the original deformation problem and can be analyzed by Picard-Fuchs equations. We exemplify the blow-up procedure for a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold given by the canonical bundle over del Pezzo surfaces.

U(1) Mediation of Flux Supersymmetry Breaking

We study the mediation of supersymmetry breaking triggered by background fluxes in Type II string compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. The mediation arises due to an U(1) vector multiplet coupling to both a hidden supersymmetry breaking flux sector and a visible D-brane sector. The required internal manifolds can be constructed by non-Kaehler resolutions of singular Calabi-Yau manifolds. The effective action encoding the U(1) coupling is then determined in terms of the global topological properties of the internal space. We investigate suitable local geometries for the hidden and visible sector in detail. This includes a systematic study of orientifold symmetries of del Pezzo surfaces realized in compact geometries after geometric transition. We construct compact examples admitting the key properties to realize flux supersymmetry breaking and U(1) mediation. Their toric realization allows us to analyze the geometry of curve classes and confirm the topological connection between the hidden and visible sector.

Direct Integration of the Topological String

We present a new method to solve the holomorphic anomaly equations governing the free energies of type B topological strings. The method is based on direct integration with respect to the non-holomorphic dependence of the amplitudes, and relies on the interplay between non-holomorphicity and modularity properties of the topological string amplitudes. We develop a formalism valid for any Calabi-Yau manifold and we study in detail two examples, providing closed expressions for the amplitudes at low genus, as well as a discussion of the boundary conditions that fix the holomorphic ambiguity. The first example is the non-compact Calabi-Yau underlying Seiberg-Witten theory and its gravitational corrections. The second example is the Enriques Calabi-Yau, which we solve in full generality up to genus six. We discuss various aspects of this model: we obtain a new method to generate holomorphic automorphic forms on the Enriques moduli space, we write down a new product formula for the fiber amplitudes at all genus, and we analyze in detail the field theory limit. This allows us to uncover the modularity properties of SU(2), N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with four massless hypermultiplets.

The effective action of N=1 Calabi-Yau orientifolds

We determine the N=1 low energy effective action for compactifications of type IIB string theory on compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds in the presence of background fluxes from a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The analysis is performed for Calabi-Yau threefolds which admit an isometric and holomorphic involution. We explicitly compute the Kahler potential, the superpotential and the gauge kinetic functions and check the consistency with N=1 supergravity. We find a new class of no-scale Kahler potentials and show that their structure can be best understood in terms of a dual formulation where some of the chiral multiplets are replaced by linear multiplets. For O3- and O7-planes the scalar potential is expressed in terms of a superpotential while for O5- and O9-planes also a D-term and a massive linear multiplet can be present. The relation with the associated F-theory compactifications is briefly discussed.
