Heterotic T-fects, 6D SCFTs, and F-Theory

We study the $(1,0)$ six-dimensional SCFTs living on defects of non-geometric heterotic backgrounds (T-fects) preserving a $E_7\times E_8$ subgroup of $E_8\times E_8$. These configurations can be dualized explicitly to F-theory on elliptic K3-fibered non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that the majority of the resulting dual threefolds contain non-resolvable singularities. In those cases in which we can resolve the singularities we explicitly determine the SCFTs living on the defect. We find a form of duality in which distinct defects are described by the same IR fixed point. For instance, we find that a subclass of non-geometric defects are described by the SCFT arising from small heterotic instantons on ADE singularities.

Discrete Gauge Symmetries by Higgsing in four-dimensional F-Theory Compactifications

We study F-Theory compactifications to four dimensions that exhibit discrete gauge symmetries. Geometrically these arise by deforming elliptic fibrations with two sections to a genus-one fibration with a bi-section. From a four-dimensional field-theory perspective they are remnant symmetries from a Higgsed U(1) gauge symmetry. We implement such symmetries in the presence of an additional SU(5) symmetry and associated matter fields, giving a geometric prescription for calculating the induced discrete charge for the matter curves and showing the absence of Yukawa couplings that are forbidden by this charge. We present a detailed map between the field theory and the geometry, including an identification of the Higgs field and the massless states before and after the Higgsing. Finally we show that the Higgsing of the U(1) induces a G-flux which precisely accounts for the change in the Calabi-Yau Euler number so as to leave the D3 tadpole invariant.

Fluxes in F-theory Compactifications on Genus-One Fibrations

We initiate the construction of gauge fluxes in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibrations which only have a multi-section as opposed to a section. F-theory on such spaces gives rise to discrete gauge symmetries in the effective action. We generalize the transversality conditions on gauge fluxes known for elliptic fibrations by taking into account the properties of the available multi-section. We test these general conditions by constructing all vertical gauge fluxes in a bisection model with gauge group SU(5) x Z2. The non-abelian anomalies are shown to vanish. These flux solutions are dynamically related to fluxes on a fibration with gauge group SU(5) x U(1) by a conifold transition. Considerations of flux quantization reveal an arithmetic constraint on certain intersection numbers on the base which must necessarily be satisfied in a smooth geometry. Combined with the proposed transversality conditions on the fluxes these conditions are shown to imply cancellation of the discrete Z2 gauge anomalies as required by general consistency considerations.

On Discrete Symmetries and Torsion Homology in F-Theory

We study the relation between discrete gauge symmetries in F-theory compactifications and torsion homology on the associated Calabi-Yau manifold. Focusing on the simplest example of a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, we show that there are two physically distinct ways that such a discrete gauge symmetry can arise. First, compactifications of M-Theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds which support a genus-one fibration with a bi-section are known to be dual to six-dimensional F-theory vacua with a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge symmetry. We show that the resulting five-dimensional theories do not have a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry but that the latter emerges only in the F-theory decompactification limit. Accordingly the genus-one fibred Calabi-Yau manifolds do not exhibit discrete torsion. Associated to the bi-section fibration is a Jacobian fibration which does support a section. Compactifying on these related but distinct varieties does lead to a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry in five dimensions and, accordingly, we find explicitly an associated discrete torsion. We identify the expected particle and membrane system of the discrete symmetry in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes and present a field-theory description of the physics for both cases in terms of circle reductions of six-dimensional theories. Our results and methods generalise straightforwardly to larger discrete symmetries and to four-dimensional compactifications.

Chow groups, Deligne cohomology and massless matter in F-theory

We propose a method to compute the exact number of charged localized massless matter states in an F-theory compactification on a Calabi-Yau 4-fold with non-trivial 3-form data. Our starting point is the description of the 3-form data via Deligne cohomology. A refined cycle map allows us to specify concrete elements therein in terms of the second Chow group of the 4-fold, i.e. rational equivalence classes of algebraic 2-cycles. We use intersection theory within the Chow ring to extract from this data a line bundle class on the curves in the base of the fibration on which charged matter is localized. The associated cohomology groups are conjectured to count the exact massless spectrum, in agreement with general patterns in Type IIB compactifications with 7-branes. We exemplify our approach by calculating the massless spectrum in an SU(5) x U(1) toy model based on an elliptic 4-fold with an extra section. The explicit evaluation of the cohomology classes is performed with the help of the cohomCalg-algorithm by Blumenhagen et al.

Mordell-Weil Torsion and the Global Structure of Gauge Groups in F-theory

We study the global structure of the gauge group $G$ of F-theory compactified on an elliptic fibration $Y$. The global properties of $G$ are encoded in the torsion subgroup of the Mordell-Weil group of rational sections of $Y$. Generalising the Shioda map to torsional sections we construct a specific integer divisor class on $Y$ as a fractional linear combination of the resolution divisors associated with the Cartan subalgebra of $G$. This divisor class can be interpreted as an element of the refined coweight lattice of the gauge group. As a result, the spectrum of admissible matter representations is strongly constrained and the gauge group is non-simply connected. We exemplify our results by a detailed analysis of the general elliptic fibration with Mordell-Weil group $\mathbb Z_2$ and $\mathbb Z_3$ as well as a further specialization to $\mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z_2$. Our analysis exploits the representation of these fibrations as hypersurfaces in toric geometry.

SU(5) Tops with Multiple U(1)s in F-theory

We study F-theory compactifications with up to two Abelian gauge group factors that are based on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 4-folds describable as generic hypersurfaces. Special emphasis is put on elliptic fibrations based on generic Bl^2 P^2[3]-fibrations. These exhibit a Mordell-Weil group of rank two corresponding to two extra rational sections which give rise to two Abelian gauge group factors. We show that an alternative description of the same geometry as a complete intersection makes the existence of a holomorphic zero-section manifest, on the basis of which we compute the U(1) generators and a class of gauge fluxes. We analyse the fibre degenerations responsible for the appearance of localised charged matter states, whose charges, interactions and chiral index we compute geometrically. We implement an additional SU(5) gauge group by constructing the four inequivalent toric tops giving rise to SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetry and analyse the matter content. We demonstrate that notorious non-flat points can be avoided in well-defined Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These methods are applied to the remaining possible hypersurface fibrations with one generic Abelian gauge factor. We analyse the local limit of our SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) models and show that one of our models is not embeddable into E8 due to recombination of matter curves that cannot be described as a Higgsing of E8. We argue that such recombination forms a general mechanism that opens up new model building possibilities in F-theory.

D3/D7 Branes at Singularities: Constraints from Global Embedding and Moduli Stabilisation

In the framework of type IIB string compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds we describe how to construct consistent global embeddings of models with fractional D3-branes and connected `flavour' D7-branes at del Pezzo singularities with moduli stabilisation. Our results are applied to build an explicit compact example with a left-right symmetric model at a dP_0 singularity which features three families of chiral matter and gauge coupling unification at the intermediate scale. We show how to stabilise the moduli obtaining a controlled de Sitter minimum and spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We find an interesting non-trivial dynamical relation between the requirement of TeV-scale soft terms and the correct phenomenological values of the unified gauge coupling and unification scale.

Elliptic fibrations for SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) F-theory vacua

Elliptic Calabi-Yau fibrations with Mordell-Weil group of rank two are constructed. Such geometries are the basis for F-theory compactifications with two abelian gauge groups in addition to non-abelian gauge symmetry. We present the elliptic fibre both as a Bl^2P^2[3]-fibration and in the birationally equivalent Weierstrass form. The spectrum of charged singlets and their Yukawa interactions are worked out in generality. This framework can be combined with the toric construction of tops to implement additional non-abelian gauge groups. We utilise the classification of tops to construct SU(5) x U(1) x U(1) gauge symmetries systematically and study the resulting geometries, presenting the defining equations, the matter curves and their charges, the Yukawa couplings and explaining the process in detail for an example. Brane recombination relates these geometries to a Bl^1P^2[3]-fibration with a corresponding class of SU(5) x U(1) models. We also present the SU(5) tops based on the elliptic fibre Bl^1P_[1,1,2][4], corresponding to another class of SU(5) x U(1) models.

Explicit de Sitter Flux Vacua for Global String Models with Chiral Matter

We address the open question of performing an explicit stabilisation of all closed string moduli (including dilaton, complex structure and Kaehler moduli) in fluxed type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with chiral matter. Using toric geometry we construct Calabi-Yau manifolds with del Pezzo singularities. D-branes located at such singularities can support the Standard Model gauge group and matter content. In order to control complex structure moduli stabilisation we consider Calabi-Yau manifolds which exhibit a discrete symmetry that reduces the effective number of complex structure moduli. We calculate the corresponding periods in the symplectic basis of invariant three-cycles and find explicit flux vacua for concrete examples. We compute the values of the flux superpotential and the string coupling at these vacua. Starting from these explicit complex structure solutions, we obtain AdS and dS minima where the Kaehler moduli are stabilised by a mixture of D-terms, non-perturbative and perturbative alpha'-corrections as in the LARGE Volume Scenario. In the considered example the visible sector lives at a dP_6 singularity which can be higgsed to the phenomenologically interesting class of models at the dP_3 singularity.

Hypercharge Flux in IIB and F-theory: Anomalies and Gauge Coupling Unification

We analyse hypercharge flux GUT breaking in F-theory/Type IIB GUT models with regards to its implications for anomaly cancellation and gauge coupling unification. To this aim we exploit the Type IIB limit and consider 7-brane configurations that for the first time are guaranteed to exhibit net hypercharge flux restriction to matter curves. We show that local F-theory models with anomalies of type U(1)_Y-U(1)^2 in the massless spectrum can be consistent only if such additional U(1)s are globally geometrically massive (in the sense that they arise from non-Kahler deformations of the Calabi-Yau four-fold). Further, in such cases of geometrically massive U(1)s hypercharge flux can induce new anomalies of type U(1)_Y^2-U(1) in the massless spectrum, violating constraints in local models forbidding such anomalies. In particular this implies that it is possible to construct models exhibiting a U(1)_{PQ} global symmetry which have hypercharge flux doublet-triplet splitting and no further exotics. We also show that the known hypercharge flux induced splitting of the gauge couplings in IIB models at tree-level can be reduced by a factor of 5 by employing a more F-theoretic twisting of U(1) flux by hypercharge flux bringing it to well within MSSM 2-loop results. In the case of net restriction of hypercharge flux to matter curves this tree-level splitting becomes more involved, is tied to the vacuum expectation values of certain closed-string fields, and therefore gauge coupling unification becomes tied to the question of moduli stabilisation.

The Web of D-branes at Singularities in Compact Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We present novel continuous supersymmetric transitions which take place among different chiral configurations of D3/D7 branes at singularities in the context of type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. We find that distinct local models which admit a consistent global embedding can actually be connected to each other along flat directions by means of transitions of bulk-to-flavour branes. This has interesting interpretations in terms of brane recombination/splitting and brane/anti-brane creation/annihilation. These transitions give rise to a large web of quiver gauge theories parametrised by splitting/recombination modes of bulk branes which are not present in the non-compact case. We illustrate our results in concrete global embeddings of chiral models at a dP_0 singularity.

U(1) symmetries in F-theory GUTs with multiple sections

We present a systematic construction of F-theory compactifications with Abelian gauge symmetries in addition to a non-Abelian gauge group G. The formalism is generally applicable to models in global Tate form but we focus on the phenomenologically interesting case of G=SU(5). The Abelian gauge factors arise due to extra global sections resulting from a specific factorisation of the Tate polynomial which describes the elliptic fibration. These constructions, which accommodate up to four different U(1) factors, are worked out in detail for the two possible embeddings of a single U(1) factor into E8, usually denoted SU(5) x U(1)_X and SU(5) x U(1)_PQ. The resolved models can be understood either patchwise via a small resolution or in terms of a P_{1,1,2}[4] description of the elliptic fibration. We derive the U(1) charges of the fields from the geometry, construct the U(1) gauge fluxes and exemplify the structure of the Yukawa interaction points. A particularly interesting result is that the global SU(5) x U(1)_PQ model exhibits extra SU(5)-singlet states which are incompatible with a single global decomposition of the 248 of E8. The states in turn lead to new Yukawa type couplings which have not been considered in local model building.

D-Branes at del Pezzo Singularities: Global Embedding and Moduli Stabilisation

In the context of type IIB string theory we combine moduli stabilisation and model building on branes at del Pezzo singularities in a fully consistent global compactification. By means of toric geometry, we classify all the CY manifolds with 3 < h11 < 6 which admit two identical del Pezzo singularities mapped into each other under the orientifold involution. This effective singularity hosts the visible sector containing the Standard Model while the Kaehler moduli are stabilised via a combination of D-terms, perturbative and non-perturbative effects supported on hidden sectors. We present concrete models where the visible sector, containing the Standard Model, gauge and matter content, is built via fractional D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities and all the Kaehler moduli are fixed providing an explicit realisation of both KKLT and LARGE volume scenarios, the latter with D-term uplifting to de Sitter minima. We perform the consistency checks for global embedding such as tadpole, K-theory charges and Freed-Witten anomaly cancellation. We briefly discuss phenomenological and cosmological implications of our models.

Gauge Fluxes in F-theory and Type IIB Orientifolds

We provide a detailed correspondence between G_4 gauge fluxes in F-theory compactifications with SU(n) and SU(n)x(1) gauge symmetry and their Type IIB orientifold limit. Based on the resolution of the relevant F-theory Tate models we classify the factorisable G_4-fluxes and match them with the set of universal D5-tadpole free U(1)-fluxes in Type IIB. Where available, the global version of the universal spectral cover flux corresponds to Type IIB gauge flux associated with a massive diagonal U(1). In U(1)-restricted Tate models extra massless abelian fluxes exist which are associated with specific linear combinations of Type IIB fluxes. Key to a quantitative match between F-theory and Type IIB is a proper treatment of the conifold singularity encountered in the Sen limit of generic F-theory models. We also shed further light on the brane recombination process relating generic and U(1)-restricted Tate models.

Moduli Stabilisation for Chiral Global Models

We combine moduli stabilisation and (chiral) model building in a fully consistent global set-up in Type IIB/F-theory. We consider compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds which admit an explicit description in terms of toric geometry. We build globally consistent compactifications with tadpole and Freed-Witten anomaly cancellation by choosing appropriate brane set-ups and world-volume fluxes which also give rise to SU(5)- or MSSM-like chiral models. We fix all the Kaehler moduli within the Kaehler cone and the regime of validity of the 4D effective field theory. This is achieved in a way compatible with the local presence of chirality. The hidden sector generating the non-perturbative effects is placed on a del Pezzo divisor that does not have any chiral intersections with any other brane. In general, the vanishing D-term condition implies the shrinking of the rigid divisor supporting the visible sector. However, we avoid this problem by generating r<n D-term conditions on a set of n intersecting divisors. The remaining (n-r) flat directions are fixed by perturbative corrections to the Kaehler potential. We illustrate our general claims in an explicit example. We consider a K3-fibred Calabi-Yau with four Kaehler moduli, that is an hypersurface in a toric ambient space and admits a simple F-theory up-lift. We present explicit choices of brane set-ups and fluxes which lead to three different phenomenological scenarios: the first with GUT-scale strings and TeV-scale SUSY by fine-tuning the background fluxes; the second with an exponentially large value of the volume and TeV-scale SUSY without fine-tuning the background fluxes; and the third with a very anisotropic configuration that leads to TeV-scale strings and two micron-sized extra dimensions. The K3 fibration structure of the Calabi-Yau three-fold is also particularly suitable for cosmological purposes.

Toric K3-Fibred Calabi-Yau Manifolds with del Pezzo Divisors for String Compactifications

We analyse several explicit toric examples of compact K3-fibred Calabi-Yau three-folds which can be used for the study of string dualities and are crucial ingredients for the construction of LARGE Volume type IIB vacua with promising applications to cosmology and particle phenomenology. In order to build a phenomenologically viable model, on top of the two moduli corresponding to the base and the K3 fibre, we demand also the existence of two additional rigid divisors: the first supporting the non-perturbative effects needed to achieve moduli stabilisation, and the second allowing the presence of chiral matter on wrapped D-branes. We clarify the topology of these rigid divisors by discussing the interplay between a diagonal structure of the Calabi-Yau volume and D-terms. Del Pezzo divisors appearing in the volume form in a completely diagonal way are natural candidates for supporting non-perturbative effects and for quiver constructions, while `non-diagonal' del Pezzo and rigid but not del Pezzo divisors are particularly interesting for model building in the geometric regime. Searching through the existing list of four dimensional reflexive lattice polytopes, we find 158 examples admitting a Calabi-Yau hypersurface which is a K3 fibration with four Kähler moduli where at least one of them is a `diagonal' del Pezzo. We work out explicitly the topological details of a few examples showing how, in the case of simplicial polytopes, all the del Pezzo divisors are `diagonal', while `non-diagonal' ones appear only in the case of non-simplicial polytopes. A companion paper will use these results in the study of moduli stabilisation for globally consistent explicit Calabi-Yau compactifications with the local presence of chirality.

G_4 flux, chiral matter and singularity resolution in F-theory compactifications

We construct a set of chirality inducing G_4-fluxes in global F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds. Special emphasis is put on models with gauge group SU(5) x U(1)_X relevant in the context of F-theory GUT model building, which are described in terms of a U(1)-restricted Tate model. In this type of constructions, the G_4-flux arises in a manner completely analogous to the U(1)_X gauge potential. We describe in detail the resolution by blow-up of the various singularities responsible for the U(1)_X factor and the standard SU(5) gauge group and match the result with techniques applied in the context of toric geometry. This provides an explicit identification of the structure of the resolved fibre over the matter curves and over the enhancement points relevant for Yukawa couplings. The U(1)_X flux induces a chiral matter spectrum. We compute the chiral index both of SU(5) charged matter and of SU(5) singlets charged only under U(1)_X localised on curves which are not contained in the SU(5) locus. We furthermore discuss global consistency conditions such as D3-tadpole cancellation, D-term supersymmetry and Freed-Witten quantisation. The U(1)_X gauge flux is a global extension of a class of split spectral cover bundles. It constitutes an essential ingredient in the construction of globally defined F-theory compactifications with chiral matter. We exemplify this in a three-generation SU(5) x U(1)_X model whose flux satisfies all of the above global consistency conditions. We also extend our results to chiral fluxes in models without U(1) restriction.

Toric Construction of Global F-Theory GUTs

We systematically construct a large number of compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds which are suitable for F-theory model building. These elliptically fibered Calabi-Yaus are complete intersections of two hypersurfaces in a six dimensional ambient space. We first construct three-dimensional base manifolds that are hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space. We search for divisors which can support an F-theory GUT. The fourfolds are obtained as elliptic fibrations over these base manifolds. We find that elementary conditions which are motivated by F-theory GUTs lead to strong constraints on the geometry, which significantly reduce the number of suitable models. The complete database of models is available at http://hep.itp.tuwien.ac.at/f-theory/. We work out several examples in more detail.
