Non-autonomous double phase eigenvalue problems with indefinite weight and lack of compactness

In this paper, we consider eigenvalues to the following double phase problem with unbalanced growth and indefinite weight, $$ -Δ_p^a u-Δ_q u =λm(x) |u|^{q-2}u \quad \mbox{in} \,\, \R^N, $$ where {$N \geq 2$}, {$1<p, q<N$, $p \neq q$}, ${a \in C^{0, 1}(\R^N, [0, +\infty))}$, $a \not\equiv 0$ and $m: \R^N \to \R$ is {an indefinite sign weight which may admit nontrivial positive and negative parts}. Here $Δ_q$ is the $q$-Laplacian operator and $Δ_p^a$ is the weighted $p$-Laplace operator defined by $Δ_p^a u:=\textnormal{div}(a(x) |\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u)$. The problem can be degenerate, in the sense that the infimum of $a$ in $\R^N$ may be zero. Our main results distinguish between the cases $p<q$ and $q<p$. In the first case, we establish the existence of a {\it continuous} family of eigenvalues, starting from the principal frequency of a suitable single phase eigenvalue problem. In the latter case, we prove the existence of a {\it discrete} family of positive eigenvalues, which diverges to infinity.

Standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with combined inhomogeneous nonlinearities

In this paper, we are concerned with solutions to the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined inhomogeneous nonlinearities, $$ -Δu + λu= μ|x|^{-b}|u|^{q-2} u + |x|^{-b}|u|^{p-2} u \quad \mbox{in} \,\, \R^N, $$ under the $L^2$-norm constraint $$ \int_{\R^N} |u|^2 \, dx=c>0, $$ where $N \geq 1$, $μ=\pm 1$, $2<q<p<{2(N-b)}/{(N-2)^+}$, $0<b<\min\{2, N\}$ and the parameter $λ\in \R$ appearing as Lagrange multiplier is unknown. In the mass subcritical case, we establish the compactness of any minimizing sequence to the minimization problem given by the underlying energy functional restricted on the constraint. As a consequence of the compactness of any minimizing sequence, orbital stability of minimizers is derived. In the mass critical and supercritical cases, we investigate the existence, radial symmetry and orbital instability of solutions. Meanwhile, we consider the existence, radial symmetry and algebraical decay of ground states to the corresponding zero mass equation with defocusing perturbation. In addition, dynamical behaviors of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the associated dispersive equation are discussed.

Uniqueness of ground states to fractional nonlinear elliptic equations with harmonic potential

In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of ground states to the following fractional nonlinear elliptic equation with harmonic potential, $$ (-Δ)^s u+ \left(ω+|x|^2\right) u=|u|^{p-2}u \quad \mbox{in}\,\, \R^n, $$ where $n \geq 1$, $0<s<1$, $ω>-λ_{1,s}$, $2<p<\frac{2n}{(n-2s)^+}$, $λ_{1,s}>0$ is the lowest eigenvalue of $(-Δ)^s + |x|^2$. The fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ is characterized as $\mathcal{F}((-Δ)^{s}u)(ξ)=|ξ|^{2s} \mathcal{F}(u)(ξ)$ for $ξ\in \R^n$, where $\mathcal{F}$ denotes the Fourier transform. This solves an open question in \cite{SS} concerning the uniqueness of ground states.

Higher topological type semiclassical states for Sobolev critical Dirac equations with degenerate potential

In this paper, we are concerned with semiclassical states to the following Sobolev critical Dirac equation with degenerate potential, \begin{align*} -\textnormal{i} \eps α\cdot \nabla u + a βu + V(x) u=|u|^{q-2} u + |u| u \quad \mbox{in} \,\, \R^3, \end{align*} where $u:\mathbb{R}^3\rightarrow \mathbb{C}^4$, $2<q<3$, $\eps>0$ is a small parameter, $a>0$ is a constant, $α=(α_1, α_2, α_3)$, $α_j$ and $β$ are $4 \times 4$ Pauli-Dirac matrices. We construct an infinite sequence of higher topological type semiclassical states with higher energies concentrating around the local minimum points of the degenerate potential $V$. The solutions are obtained from a minimax characterization of higher dimensional symmetric linking structure, which correspond to critical points of the underlying energy functional at energy levels where compactness condition breaks down. Our approach is variational, which mainly relies on penalization method and blow-up arguments along with local type Pohozaev identity.

Existence and orbital stability of standing waves for nonlinear Schrödinger systems

In this paper we investigate the existence of solutions in $H^1(R^N) \times H^1(R^N)$ for nonlinear Schrödinger systems of the form \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -Δu_1 &= λ_1 u_1 + μ_1 |u_1|^{p_1 -2}u_1 + r_1β|u_1|^{r_1-2}u_1|u_2|^{r_2}, \\ -Δu_2 &= λ_2 u_2 + μ_2 |u_2|^{p_2 -2}u_2 + r_2 β|u_1|^{r_1}|u_2|^{r_2 -2}u_2, \end{aligned} \right. \] under the constraints \[\int_{R^N}|u_1|^2 \, dx = a_1>0,\quad \int_{R^N}|u_2|^2 \, dx = a_2>0. \] Here $ N \geq 1, β>0, μ_i >0, r_i >1, 2 <p_i < 2 + \frac{4}{N}$ for $i=1,2$ and $ r_1 + r_2 < 2 + \frac{4}{N}$. This problem is motivated by the search of standing waves for an evolution problem appearing in several physical models. Our solutions are obtained as constrained global minimizers of an associated functional. Note that in the system $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are unknown and will correspond to the Lagrange multipliers. Our main result is the precompactness of the minimizing sequences, up to translation, and as a consequence we obtain the orbital stability of the standing waves associated to the set of minimizers.
