Nonhomogeneous quasilinear elliptic problems: linear and sublinear cases

We are concerned with a class of second order quasilinear elliptic equations driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator introduced by C.A. Stuart and whose study is motivated by models in Nonlinear Optics. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one or two non-negative solutions. Our analysis considers the cases when the reaction has either a sublinear or a linear growth. In the sublinear case, we also prove a nonexistence property. The proofs combine energy estimates and variational methods. In particular, the monotonicity trick is applied in order to overcome the lack of a priori bounds on the Palais-Smale sequences.

Orbital stability of ground states for a Sobolev critical Schrödinger equation

We study the existence of ground state standing waves, of prescribed mass, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with mixed power nonlinearities \begin{equation*} i \partial_t v + Δv + μv |v|^{q-2} + v |v|^{2^* - 2} = 0, \quad (t, x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $N \geq 3$, $v: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{C}$, $μ> 0$, $2 < q < 2 + 4/N $ and $2^* = 2N/(N-2)$ is the critical Sobolev exponent. We show that all ground states correspond to local minima of the associated Energy functional. Next, despite the fact that the nonlinearity is Sobolev critical, we show that the set of ground states is orbitally stable. Our results settle a question raised by N. Soave [35].

Existence and orbital stability of standing waves for nonlinear Schrödinger systems

In this paper we investigate the existence of solutions in $H^1(R^N) \times H^1(R^N)$ for nonlinear Schrödinger systems of the form \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -Δu_1 &= λ_1 u_1 + μ_1 |u_1|^{p_1 -2}u_1 + r_1β|u_1|^{r_1-2}u_1|u_2|^{r_2}, \\ -Δu_2 &= λ_2 u_2 + μ_2 |u_2|^{p_2 -2}u_2 + r_2 β|u_1|^{r_1}|u_2|^{r_2 -2}u_2, \end{aligned} \right. \] under the constraints \[\int_{R^N}|u_1|^2 \, dx = a_1>0,\quad \int_{R^N}|u_2|^2 \, dx = a_2>0. \] Here $ N \geq 1, β>0, μ_i >0, r_i >1, 2 <p_i < 2 + \frac{4}{N}$ for $i=1,2$ and $ r_1 + r_2 < 2 + \frac{4}{N}$. This problem is motivated by the search of standing waves for an evolution problem appearing in several physical models. Our solutions are obtained as constrained global minimizers of an associated functional. Note that in the system $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are unknown and will correspond to the Lagrange multipliers. Our main result is the precompactness of the minimizing sequences, up to translation, and as a consequence we obtain the orbital stability of the standing waves associated to the set of minimizers.

On dipolar quantum gases in the unstable regime

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the unstable regime. Two cases are studied: the first when the system is free, the second when gradually a trapping potential is added. In both cases we first focus on the existence and stability/ instability properties of standing waves. Our approach leads to the search of critical points of a constrained functional which is unbounded from below on the constraint. In the free case, by showing that the constrained functional has a so-called {\it mountain pass geometry}, we prove the existence of standing states with least energy, the ground states, and show that any ground state is orbitally unstable. Moreover, when the system is free, we show that small data in the energy space scatter in all regimes, stable and unstable. In the second case, if the trapping potential is small, we prove that two different kind of standing waves appears: one corresponds to a {\it topological local minimizer} of the constrained energy functional and it consists in ground states, the other is again of {\it mountain pass type} but now corresponds to excited states. We also prove that any ground state is a {\it topological local minimizer}. Despite the problem is mass supercritical and the functional unbounded from below, the standing waves associated to the set of ground states turn to be orbitally stable. Actually, from the physical point of view, the introduction of the trapping potential stabilizes the system initially unstable. Related to this we observe that it also creates a gap in the ground state energy level of the system. In addition when the trapping potential is active the presence of standing waves with arbitrary small norm does not permit small data scattering. Eventually some asymptotic results are also given.

Multiple normalized solutions for quasi-linear Schrödinger equations

In this paper we prove the existence of two solutions having a prescribed $L^2$-norm for a quasi-linear Schrödinger equation. One of these solutions is a mountain pass solution relative to a constraint and the other one a minimum either local or global. To overcome the lack of differentiability of the associated functional, we rely on a perturbation method developed in [27].

Multiplicity results in the non-coercive case for an elliptic problem with critical growth in the gradient

We consider the boundary value problem \begin{equation} - Δu = λc(x)u+ μ(x) |\nabla u|^2 + h(x), \qquad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω), \leqno{(P_λ)} \end{equation} where $Ω\subset \R^N, N \geq 3$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is assumed that $c\gneqq 0$, $c,h$ belong to $L^p(Ω)$ for some $p > N$. Also $μ\in L^{\infty}(Ω)$ and $μ\geq μ_1 >0$ for some $μ_1 \in \R$. It is known that when $λ\leq 0$, problem $(P_λ)$ has at most one solution. In this paper we study, under various assumptions, the structure of the set of solutions of $(P_λ)$ assuming that $λ>0$. Our study unveils the rich structure of this problem. We show, in particular, that what happen for $λ=0$ influences the set of solutions in all the half-space $]0,+\infty[\times(H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω))$. Most of our results are valid without assuming that $h$ has a sign. If we require $h$ to have a sign, we observe that the set of solutions differs completely for $h\gneqq 0$ and $h\lneqq 0$. We also show when $h$ has a sign that solutions not having this sign may exists. Some uniqueness results of signed solutions are also derived. The paper ends with a list of open problems.

Normalized solutions for a system of coupled cubic Schrödinger equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider the system of coupled elliptic equations \[ \begin{cases} -Δu - λ_1 u = μ_1 u^3+ βu v^2 \\ -Δv- λ_2 v = μ_2 v^3 +βu^2 v \end{cases} \text{in $\mathbb{R}^3$}, \] and study the existence of positive solutions satisfying the additional condition \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} u^2 = a_1^2 \quad \text{and} \quad \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} v^2 = a_2^2. \] Assuming that $a_1,a_2,μ_1,μ_2$ are positive fixed quantities, we prove existence results for different ranges of the coupling parameter $β>0$. The extension to systems with an arbitrary number of components is discussed, as well as the orbital stability of the corresponding standing waves for the related Schrödinger systems.

Normalized solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems

We consider the existence of \emph{normalized} solutions in $H^1(\R^N) \times H^1(\R^N)$ for systems of nonlinear Schrödinger equations which appear in models for binary mixtures of ultracold quantum gases. Making a solitary wave ansatz one is led to coupled systems of elliptic equations of the form \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -\De u_1 &= \la_1u_1 + f_1(u_1)+\pa_1F(u_1,u_2),\\ -\De u_2 &= \la_2u_2 + f_2(u_2)+\pa_2F(u_1,u_2),\\ u_1,u_2&\in H^1(\R^N),\ N\ge2, \end{aligned} \right. \] and we are looking for solutions satisfying \[ \int_{\R^N}|u_1|^2 = a_1,\quad \int_{\R^N}|u_2|^2 = a_2 \] where $a_1>0$ and $a_2>0$ are prescribed. In the system $\la_1$ and $\la_2$ are unknown and will appear as Lagrange multipliers. We treat the case of homogeneous nonlinearities, i.e.\ $f_i(u_i)=μ_i|u_i|^{p_i-1}u_i$, $F(u_1,u_2)=\be|u_1|^{r_1}|u_2|^{r_2}$, with positive constants $\be, μ_i, p_i, r_i$. The exponents are Sobolev subcritical but may be $L^2$-supercritical: $p_1,p_2,r_1+r_2\in]2,2^*[\,\setminus\left\{2+\frac4N\right\}$.

Continuum of solutions for an elliptic problem with critical growth in the gradient

We consider the boundary value problem \begin{equation*} - Δu = λc(x)u+ μ(x) |\nabla u|^2 + h(x), \quad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω) \eqno{(P_λ)} \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset \R^N, N \geq 3$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is assumed that $c\gneqq 0$, $c,h$ belong to $L^p(Ω)$ for some $p > N/2$ and that $μ\in L^{\infty}(Ω).$ We explicit a condition which guarantees the existence of a unique solution of $(P_λ)$ when $λ<0$ and we show that these solutions belong to a continuum. The behaviour of the continuum depends in an essential way on the existence of a solution of $(P_0)$. It crosses the axis $λ=0$ if $(P_0)$ has a solution, otherwise if bifurcates from infinity at the left of the axis $λ=0$. Assuming that $(P_0)$ has a solution and strenghtening our assumptions to $μ(x)\geq μ_1>0$ and $h\gneqq 0$, we show that the continuum bifurcates from infinity on the right of the axis $λ=0$ and this implies, in particular, the existence of two solutions for any $λ>0$ sufficiently small.

Multiple solutions for an indefinite elliptic problem with critical growth in the gradient

We consider the problem $(P)$, $$ -Δu =c(x)u+μ|\nabla u|^2 +f(x), \quad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω),$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 3$, $μ>0, \, c \in \mathcal{C}(\overlineΩ),$ and $ f \in L^q(Ω)$ for some $ q>\frac{N}{2}$ with $ f\gneqq 0. $ Here $c$ is allowed to change sign. We show that when $c^+ \not \equiv 0$ and $c^+ +μf$ is suitably small, this problem has at least two positive solutions. This result contrasts with the case $c \leq 0$, where uniqueness holds. To show this multiplicity result we first transform $(P)$ into a semilinear problem having a variational structure. Then we are led to the search of two critical points for a functional whose superquadratic part is indefinite in sign and has a so called slow growth at infinity. The key point is to show that the Palais-Smale condition holds.

Multiplicity of positive solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger équations concentrating at a potential well

We consider singularly perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equations \be \label{eq:0.1} - \varepsilon^2 Δu + V(x)u = f(u), \ \ u > 0, \ \ v \in H^1(\R^N) \ee where $V \in C(\R^N, \R)$ and $f$ is a nonlinear term which satisfies the so-called Berestycki-Lions conditions. We assume that there exists a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^N$ such that \[m_0 \equiv \inf_{x \in Ω} V(x) < \inf_{x \in \partial Ω} V(x) \] and we set $K = \{x \in Ω\ | \ V(x) = m_0\}$. For $\e >0$ small we prove the existence of at least ${\cuplength}(K) + 1$ solutions to (\ref{eq:0.1}) concentrating, as $\e \to 0$ around $K$. We remark that, under our assumptions of $f$, the search of solutions to (\ref{eq:0.1}) cannot be reduced to the study of the critical points of a functional restricted to a Nehari manifold.

Remarks on the uniqueness for quasilinear elliptic equations with quadratic growth conditions

In this note we present some uniqueness and comparison results for a class of problem of the form \begin{equation} \label{EE0} \begin{array}{c} - L u = H(x,u,\nabla u)+ h(x), \quad u \in H^1_0(Ω) \cap L^{\infty}(Ω), \end{array} \end{equation} where $Ω\subset \R^N$, $N \geq 2$ is a bounded domain, $L$ is a general elliptic second order linear operator with bounded coefficients and $H$ is allowed to have a critical growth in the gradient. In some cases our assumptions prove to be sharp.

Existence and instability of standing waves with prescribed norm for a class of Schrödinger-Poisson equations

In this paper we study the existence and the instability of standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm for a class of Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equations in $\R^{3}$ %orbitally stable standing waves with arbitray charge for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{evolution1} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 % \text{in} \R^{3}, when $p \in (10/3,6)$. To obtain such solutions we look to critical points of the energy functional $$F(u)=1/2| \triangledown u|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3)}^2+1/4\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}\frac{|u(x)|^2| u(y)|^2}{|x-y|}dxdy-\frac{1}{p}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|u|^pdx $$ on the constraints given by $$S(c)= \{u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^3) :|u|_{L^2(\R^3)}^2=c, c>0}.$$ For the values $p \in (10/3, 6)$ considered, the functional $F$ is unbounded from below on $S(c)$ and the existence of critical points is obtained by a mountain pass argument developed on $S(c)$. We show that critical points exist provided that $c>0$ is sufficiently small and that when $c>0$ is not small a non-existence result is expected. Concerning the dynamics we show for initial condition $u_0\in H^1(\R^3)$ of the associated Cauchy problem with $|u_0|_{2}^2=c$ that the mountain pass energy level $γ(c)$ gives a threshold for global existence. Also the strong instability of standing waves at the mountain pass energy level is proved. Finally we draw a comparison between the Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater equation and the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Existence and multiplicity for elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient

We show that a class of divergence-form elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient and non-coercive zero order terms are solvable, under essentially optimal hypotheses on the coefficients in the equation. In addition, we prove that the solutions are in general not unique. The case where the zero order term has the opposite sign was already intensively studied and the uniqueness is the rule.

Sharp non-existence results of prescribed L^2-norm solutions for some class of Schrödinger-Poisson and quasilinear equations

In this paper we study the existence of minimizers for $$ F(u) = \1/2\int_{\R^3} |\nabla u|^2 dx + 1/4\int_{\R^3}\int_{\R^3}\frac{| u(x) |^2| u(y) |^2}{| x-y |}dxdy-\frac{1}{p}\int_{\R^3}| u |^p dx$$ on the constraint $$S(c) = \{u \in H^1(\R^3) : \int_{\R^3}|u|^2 dx = c \},$$ where $c>0$ is a given parameter. In the range $p \in [3, 10/3]$ we explicit a threshold value of $c>0$ separating existence and non-existence of minimizers. We also derive a non-existence result of critical points of $F(u)$ restricted to $S(c)$ when $c>0$ is sufficiently small. Finally, as a byproduct of our approaches, we extend some results of \cite{CJS} where a constrained minimization problem, associated to a quasilinear equation, is considered.

Instability for standing waves of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations via mountain-pass arguments

We introduce mountain-pass type arguments in the context of orbital instability for Klein-Gordon equations. Our aim is to illustrate on two examples how these arguments can be useful to simplify proofs and derive new results of orbital stability/instability. For a power-type nonlinearity, we prove that the ground states of the associated stationary equation are minimizers of the functional "action" on a wide variety of constraints. For a general nonlinearity, we extend to the dimension N=2 the classical instability result for stationary solutions of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations proved in 1985 by Shatah in dimension N>2.
