Less Is More: Fast Multivariate Time Series Forecasting with Light Sampling-oriented MLP Structures

Multivariate time series forecasting has seen widely ranging applications in various domains, including finance, traffic, energy, and healthcare. To capture the sophisticated temporal patterns, plenty of research studies designed complex neural network architectures based on many variants of RNNs, GNNs, and Transformers. However, complex models are often computationally expensive and thus face a severe challenge in training and inference efficiency when applied to large-scale real-world datasets. In this paper, we introduce LightTS, a light deep learning architecture merely based on simple MLP-based structures. The key idea of LightTS is to apply an MLP-based structure on top of two delicate down-sampling strategies, including interval sampling and continuous sampling, inspired by a crucial fact that down-sampling time series often preserves the majority of its information. We conduct extensive experiments on eight widely used benchmark datasets. Compared with the existing state-of-the-art methods, LightTS demonstrates better performance on five of them and comparable performance on the rest. Moreover, LightTS is highly efficient. It uses less than 5% FLOPS compared with previous SOTA methods on the largest benchmark dataset. In addition, LightTS is robust and has a much smaller variance in forecasting accuracy than previous SOTA methods in long sequence forecasting tasks.

AutoAlpha: an Efficient Hierarchical Evolutionary Algorithm for Mining Alpha Factors in Quantitative Investment

The multi-factor model is a widely used model in quantitative investment. The success of a multi-factor model is largely determined by the effectiveness of the alpha factors used in the model. This paper proposes a new evolutionary algorithm called AutoAlpha to automatically generate effective formulaic alphas from massive stock datasets. Specifically, first we discover an inherent pattern of the formulaic alphas and propose a hierarchical structure to quickly locate the promising part of space for search. Then we propose a new Quality Diversity search based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA-QD) to guide the search away from the well-explored space for more desirable results. Next, we utilize the warm start method and the replacement method to prevent the premature convergence problem. Based on the formulaic alphas we discover, we propose an ensemble learning-to-rank model for generating the portfolio. The backtests in the Chinese stock market and the comparisons with several baselines further demonstrate the effectiveness of AutoAlpha in mining formulaic alphas for quantitative trading.

The role of second-order radial density gradient for helicon power absorption

To reveal the mysterious and still controversial mechanism of high ionization efficiency during helicon discharges, this work focuses particularly on the role of second-order derivative in radial density profile, both analytical and numerically. It is found that: (i) the radially localized potential well that plays a critical role in resonance power absorption from antenna to plasma is localized where the second-order derivative vanishes, (ii) the power absorption increases for positive second-order derivative, decreases for negative second-order derivative, and maximizes where second-order derivative becomes zero, (iii) the power absorption decreases near plasma core and increases near plasma edge when the radial location of vanishing second-order derivative moves outwards, which is also a process of Trivelpiece-Gould mode overwhelming helicon mode. These findings can be very interesting for helicon plasma applications that require certain power distribution or heat flux configuration, e. g. material processing, which can be controlled by adjusting the profile and zero-crossing location of second-order radial density gradient.

Cancellations between Kloosterman sums modulo a prime power with prime arguments

We obtain a nontrivial bound for cancellations between the Kloosterman sums modulo a large prime power with a prime argument running over very short interval, which in turn is based on a new estimate on bilinear sums of Kloosterman sums. These results are analogues of those obtained by various authors for Kloosterman sums modulo a prime. However the underlying technique is different and allows us to obtain nontrivial results starting from much shorter ranges.

Divisor problem in arithmetic progressions modulo a prime power

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the average value of the divisor function over the integers $n \le x$ in an arithmetic progression $n \equiv a \pmod q$, where $q=p^k$ for a prime $p\ge 3$ and a sufficiently large integer $k$. In particular, we break the classical barrier $q \le x^{2/3}$ for such formulas, and generalise a recent result of R.~Khan (2015), making it uniform in $k$.

Squares in Piatetski--Shapiro Sequences

We study the distribution of squares in a Piatetski-Shapiro sequence $\left(\lfloor n^c\rfloor\right)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ with $c>1$ and $c\not\in\mathbb N$. We also study more general equations $\lfloor{n^c}\rfloor = sm^2$, $n,m\in \mathbb N$, $1\le n \le N$ for an integer $s$ and obtain several bounds on the number of solutions for a fixed $s$ and on average over $s$ in an interval. These results are based on various techniques chosen depending on the range of the parameters.
