Joint Active and Passive Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Multiuser MIMO Communications

This letter investigates the joint active and passive beamforming optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems with the objective of maximizing the weighted sum-rate. We show that this problem can be solved via a matrix weighted mean square error minimization equivalence. In particular, for the optimization of the passive IRS beamforming, we first propose an iterative algorithm with excellent performance based on the manifold optimization. By using the matrix fractional programming technique to obtain a more tractable object function, we then propose a low complexity algorithm based on the majorization-minimization method. Numerical results verify the convergence of our proposed algorithms and the significant performance improvement over the communication scenario without IRS assistance.

Channel Estimation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are regarded as promising enablers for future millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless communication, due to their ability to create favorable line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environments. In this paper, we investigate channel estimation in downlink IRS-assisted mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. By leveraging the sparsity of mmWave channels, we formulate the channel estimation problem as a fixed-rank constrained non-convex optimization problem. To tackle the non-convexity, an efficient algorithm is proposed by capitalizing on alternating minimization and manifold optimization (MO), which yields a locally optimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed MO-based estimation (MO-EST) algorithm significantly outperforms two benchmark schemes and demonstrate the robustness of the MO-EST algorithm with respect to imperfect knowledge of the sparsity level of the channels in practical implementations.

How Large is too Large? A Review of the Issues related to Sample Size Requirements of Regional Household Travel Surveys with a Case Study on the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA)

The paper presents a review of sample size issues related to regional household travel surveys. A review of current practices reveals that different perspectives and, as a result, different practices exist in Canada, US, and abroad on sample size. The paper uses data from the Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS) - a household travel survey conducted every five years in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) - for a set of empirical investigations that asses the adequacy of household travel survey samples. The empirical investigations reveal that even with a 5% sample size, a full representation of the population and its corresponding travel behaviour may be difficult (at the 95% confidence level). Therefore, based on the results of the empirical investigations and the literature review, the paper proposes a flexible framework for household travel survey sample size determination, especially for Canadian municipalities.

Beamforming Design for Large-Scale Antenna Arrays Using Deep Learning

Beamforming (BF) design for large-scale antenna arrays with limited radio frequency chains and the phase-shifter-based analog BF architecture, has been recognized as a key issue in millimeter wave communication systems. It becomes more challenging with imperfect channel state information (CSI). In this letter, we propose a deep learning based BF design approach and develop a BF neural network (BFNN) which can be trained to learn how to optimize the beamformer for maximizing the spectral efficiency with hardware limitation and imperfect CSI. Simulation results show that the proposed BFNN achieves significant performance improvement and strong robustness to imperfect CSI over the conventional BF algorithms.

Combining Traditional Marketing and Viral Marketing with Amphibious Influence Maximization

In this paper, we propose the amphibious influence maximization (AIM) model that combines traditional marketing via content providers and viral marketing to consumers in social networks in a single framework. In AIM, a set of content providers and consumers form a bipartite network while consumers also form their social network, and influence propagates from the content providers to consumers and among consumers in the social network following the independent cascade model. An advertiser needs to select a subset of seed content providers and a subset of seed consumers, such that the influence from the seed providers passing through the seed consumers could reach a large number of consumers in the social network in expectation. We prove that the AIM problem is NP-hard to approximate to within any constant factor via a reduction from Feige's k-prover proof system for 3-SAT5. We also give evidence that even when the social network graph is trivial (i.e. has no edges), a polynomial time constant factor approximation for AIM is unlikely. However, when we assume that the weighted bi-adjacency matrix that describes the influence of content providers on consumers is of constant rank, a common assumption often used in recommender systems, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm that achieves approximation ratio of $(1-1/e-ε)^3$ for any (polynomially small) $ε> 0$. Our algorithmic results still hold for a more general model where cascades in social network follow a general monotone and submodular function.

Real-time Topic-aware Influence Maximization Using Preprocessing

Influence maximization is the task of finding a set of seed nodes in a social network such that the influence spread of these seed nodes based on certain influence diffusion model is maximized. Topic-aware influence diffusion models have been recently proposed to address the issue that influence between a pair of users are often topic-dependent and information, ideas, innovations etc. being propagated in networks (referred collectively as items in this paper) are typically mixtures of topics. In this paper, we focus on the topic-aware influence maximization task. In particular, we study preprocessing methods for these topics to avoid redoing influence maximization for each item from scratch. We explore two preprocessing algorithms with theoretical justifications. Our empirical results on data obtained in a couple of existing studies demonstrate that one of our algorithms stands out as a strong candidate providing microsecond online response time and competitive influence spread, with reasonable preprocessing effort.
