Recent neutron focusing experiments using polycapillary lens in CSNS

Higher neutron current densities can provide convenience for neutron experiments. Using neutron optical focusing elements, large flux beams transported to sample can be achieved. As one kind of focusing elements, polycapillary lens is very suitable for neutron absorption experiments such as PGAA and NDP technology. At present, a Neutron Physics and Application Spectrometer was in construction in CSNS, which is the first pulsed neutron source in China. To provide some suggestions and ideas for the following design of enhanced PGAA or NDP instrument with polycapillary lens in CSNS, a first neutron focusing experiment using polycapillary lens in CSNS was conducted. For 0.5-12.6 polychromatic beam, a focal spot with FWHM of 800 was obtained. As the value of wavelength increased, the beam size, transmission efficiency and gain increased. For cold neutron, the gain maintained in a level of 7.

Single-Pixel Imaging with Neutrons

Neutron imaging is an invaluable noninvasive technique for exploring new science and assisting industrial manufacture. However, state-of-the-art neutron facilities are extremely expensive and inconvenient to access, while the flux of portable neutron sources is not strong enough to form even a static image within an acceptable time frame. It is hard to obtain images with both high spatial resolution and energy resolution together. Here, based on classical amplitude modulation, we demonstrate single-pixel imaging with neutrons with specially designed masks and, further, obtain energy-selective images with a spallation neutron source. Images of real complex objects with 100 μm spatial resolution and 10 μs time resolution (corresponding to 0.4% at 1 Å) have been obtained using a 3He single-pixel detector. Even when the neutron counts in the detector plane were lowered to 1000 per modulation pattern on average, a clear image was still obtained. The experimental setup is simple, inexpensive and easy to operate, thus our scheme points to a new path for neutron imaging, especially for portable radioactive neutron sources of low intensity, which should be of great benefit for diagnostic analysis in biology, materials science, and industrial processes.

Application of the First Collision Source Method to CSNS Target Station Shielding Calculation

Ray effects are the inherent problem of discrete ordinates method. RAY3D, a functional module of ARES which is a discrete ordinates code system, employs a semi-analytic first collision source method to mitigate ray effects. This method decomposes the flux into uncollided and collided components, and then calculates them with analytical method and discrete ordinates method respectively. In this article, RAY3D is validated by the Kobayashi benchmarks and applied to the neutron beamline shielding problem of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) target station. Numerical results of the Kobayashi benchmarks indicate that DONTRAN3D with RAY3D solutions agree well with the Monte Carlo solutions. The dose rate at the end of the neutron beamline is less than 10.83 μSv/h in CSNS target station neutron beamline shutter model. RAY3D can effectively mitigate ray effects and obtain relatively reasonable results.
