The space $L_1(L_p)$ is primary for $1<p<\infty$

The classical Banach space $L_1(L_p)$ consists of measurable scalar functions $f$ on the unit square for which $$\|f\| = \int_0^1\Big(\int_0^1 |f(x,y)|^p dy\Big)^{1/p}dx < \infty.$$ We show that $L_1(L_p)$ $(1 < p < \infty)$ is primary, meaning that, whenever $L_1(L_p) = E\oplus F$ then either $E$ or $F$ is isomorphic to $L_1(L_p)$. More generally we show that $L_1(X)$ is primary, for a large class of rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces.

A new coarsely rigid class of Banach spaces

We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality is not equivalent to the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Hamming graphs.

Banach spaces for which the space of operators has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals

We formulate general conditions which imply that $L(X,Y)$, the space of operators from a Banach space $X$ to a Banach space $Y$, has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals where $\mathfrak c$ is the cardinality of the continuum. These results are applied to classical sequence spaces and Tsirelson type spaces. In particular, we prove that the cardinality of the set of closed ideals in $L(\ell_p\oplus\ell_q)$ is exactly $2^{\mathfrak c}$ for all $1<p<q<\infty$, which in turn gives an alternate proof of the recent result of Johnson and Schechtman that $L(L_p)$ also has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals for $1<p\neq 2<\infty$.

Coarse and Lipschitz universality

In this paper we provide several \emph{metric universality} results. We exhibit for certain classes $\cC$ of metric spaces, families of metric spaces $(M_i, d_i)_{i\in I}$ which have the property that a metric space $(X,d_X)$ in $\cC$ is coarsely, resp. Lipschitzly, universal for all spaces in $\cC$ if the collection of spaces $(M_i,d_i)_{i\in I}$ equi-coarsely, respectively equi-Lipschitzly, embeds into $(X,d_X)$. Such families are built as certain Schreier-type metric subsets of $\co$. We deduce a metric analog to Bourgain's theorem, which generalized Szlenk's theorem, and prove that a space which is coarsely universal for all separable reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely universal for all separable metric spaces. One of our coarse universality results is valid under Martin's Axiom and the negation of the Continuum Hypothesis. We discuss the strength of the universality statements that can be obtained without these additional set theoretic assumptions. In the second part of the paper, we study universality properties of Kalton's interlacing graphs. In particular, we prove that every finite metric space embeds almost isometrically in some interlacing graph of large enough diameter.

On the bi-Lipschitz geometry of lamplighter graphs

In this article we start a systematic study of the bi-Lipschitz geometry of lamplighter graphs. We prove that lamplighter graphs over trees bi-Lipschitzly embed into Hamming cubes with distortion at most~$6$. It follows that lamplighter graphs over countable trees bi-Lipschitzly embed into $\ell_1$. We study the metric behaviour of the operation of taking the lamplighter graph over the vertex-coalescence of two graphs. Based on this analysis, we provide metric characterizations of superreflexivity in terms of lamplighter graphs over star graphs or rose graphs. Finally, we show that the presence of a clique in a graph implies the presence of a Hamming cube in the lamplighter graph over it. An application is a characterization in terms of a sequence of graphs with uniformly bounded degree of the notion of trivial Bourgain-Milman-Wolfson type for arbitrary metric spaces, similar to Ostrovskii's characterization previously obtained in \cite{ostrovskii:11}.

Stochastic approximation of lamplighter metrics

We observe that embeddings into random metrics can be fruitfully used to study the $L_1$-embeddability of lamplighter graphs or groups, and more generally lamplighter metric spaces. Once this connection has been established, several new upper bound estimates on the $L_1$-distortion of lamplighter metrics follow from known related estimates about stochastic embeddings into dominating tree-metrics. For instance, every lamplighter metric on a $n$-point metric space embeds bi-Lipschitzly into $L_1$ with distortion $O(\log n)$. In particular, for every finite group $G$ the lamplighter group $H = \mathbb{Z}_2\wr G$ bi-Lipschitzly embeds into $L_1$ with distortion $O(\log\log|H|)$. In the case where the ground space in the lamplighter construction is a graph with some topological restrictions, better distortion estimates can be achieved. Finally, we discuss how a coarse embedding into $L_1$ of the lamplighter group over the $d$-dimensional infinite lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ can be constructed from bi-Lipschitz embeddings of the lamplighter graphs over finite $d$-dimensional grids, and we include a remark on Lipschitz free spaces over finite metric spaces.

The cardinality of the sublattice of closed ideals of operators between certain classical sequence spaces

Theorem A and Theorem B of [1] state that for $1<p<\infty$ the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,c_0)$, $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1,\ell_p)$ are at least of cardinality $2^ω$. Here we show that the cardinality of the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,c_0)$, $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1,\ell_p)$, is at least $2^{2^ω}$, and thus equal to it.

The geometry of Hamming-type metrics and their embeddings into Banach spaces

Within the class of reflexive Banach spaces, we prove a metric characterization of the class of asymptotic-$c_0$ spaces in terms of a bi-Lipschitz invariant which involves metrics that generalize the Hamming metric on $k$-subsets of $\mathbb{N}$. We apply this characterization to show that the class of separable, reflexive, and asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is non-Borel co-analytic. Finally, we introduce a relaxation of the asymptotic-$c_0$ property, called the asymptotic-subsequential-$c_0$ property, which is a partial obstruction to the equi-coarse embeddability of the sequence of Hamming graphs. We present examples of spaces that are asymptotic-subsequential-$c_0$. In particular $T^*(T^*)$ is asymptotic-subsequential-$c_0$ where $T^*$ is Tsirelson's original space.

Shift invariant preduals of $\ell_1(\Z)$

The Banach space $\ell_1(\Z)$ admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for example, $C(K)$ for any compact countable space $K$, along with many more exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual must make the bilateral shift on $\ell_1(\Z)$ weak$^*$-continuous. This is equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on $\ell_1(\Z)$ separately weak*-continuous and so turning $\ell_1(\Z)$ into a dual Banach algebra. We call such preduals \emph{shift-invariant}. It is known that the only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between $C_0(K)$ (for countable locally compact $K$) and $\ell_1(\Z)$ is $c_0(\Z)$. We provide an explicit construction of an uncountable family of distinct preduals which do make the bilateral shift weak$^*$-continuous. Using Szlenk index arguments, we show that merely as Banach spaces, these are all isomorphic to $c_0$. We then build some theory to study such preduals, showing that they arise from certain semigroup compactifications of $\Z$. This allows us to produce a large number of other examples, including non-isometric preduals, and preduals which are not Banach space isomorphic to $c_0$.

Dichotomy theorems for random matrices and closed ideals of operators on $\big(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_1^n \big)_{\mathrm{c}_0}$

We prove two dichotomy theorems about sequences of operators into $L_1$ given by random matrices. In the second theorem we assume that the entries of each random matrix form a sequence of independent, symmetric random variables. Then the corresponding sequence of operators either uniformly factor the identity operators on $\ell_1^k$ $(k\in\mathbb N$) or uniformly approximately factor through $\mathrm{c}_0$. The first theorem has a slightly weaker conclusion still related to factorization properties but makes no assumption on the random matrices. Indeed, it applies to operators defined on an arbitrary sequence of Banach spaces. These results provide information on the closed ideal structure of the Banach algebra of all operators on the space $\big(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_1^n \big)_{\mathrm{c}_0}$.

The universality of $\ell_1$ as a dual space

Let $X$ be a Banach space with a separable dual. We prove that $X$ embeds isomorphically into a $\cL_\infty$ space $Z$ whose dual is isomorphic to $\ell_1$. If, moreover, $U$ is a space so that $U$ and $X$ are totally incomparable, then we construct such a $Z$, so that $Z$ and $U$ are totally incomparable. If $X$ is separable and reflexive, we show that $Z$ can be made to be somewhat reflexive.

An analytic solution to the Busemann-Petty problem on sections of convex bodies

We derive a formula connecting the derivatives of parallel section functions of an origin-symmetric star body in R^n with the Fourier transform of powers of the radial function of the body. A parallel section function (or (n-1)-dimensional X-ray) gives the ((n-1)-dimensional) volumes of all hyperplane sections of the body orthogonal to a given direction. This formula provides a new characterization of intersection bodies in R^n and leads to a unified analytic solution to the Busemann-Petty problem: Suppose that K and L are two origin-symmetric convex bodies in R^n such that the ((n-1)-dimensional) volume of each central hyperplane section of K is smaller than the volume of the corresponding section of L; is the (n-dimensional) volume of K smaller than the volume of L? In conjunction with earlier established connections between the Busemann-Petty problem, intersection bodies, and positive definite distributions, our formula shows that the answer to the problem depends on the behavior of the (n-2)-nd derivative of the parallel section functions. The affirmative answer to the Busemann-Petty problem for n\le 4 and the negative answer for n\ge 5 now follow from the fact that convexity controls the second derivatives, but does not control the derivatives of higher orders.

On asymptotic properties of Banach spaces under renormings

It is shown that a separable Banach space $X$ can be given an equivalent norm $|\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|$ with the following properties:\quad If $(x_n)\subseteq X$ is relatively weakly compact and $\lim_{m\to\infty} \lim_{n\to\infty}\break |\!|\!| x_m + x_n |\!|\!| = 2\lim_{m\to\infty} |\!|\!| x_m|\!|\!|$ then $(x_n)$ converges in norm. This yields a characterization of reflexivity once proposed by V.D.~Milman. In addition it is shown that some spreading model of a sequence in $(X, |\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|)$ is 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$) implies that $X$ contains an isomorph of $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$).

Hypercontractivity and comparison of moments of iterated maxima and minima of independent random variables

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for hypercontractivity of the minima of nonnegative, i.i.d. random variables and of both the maxima of minima and the minima of maxima for such r.v.'s. It turns out that the idea of hypercontractivity for minima is closely related to small ball probabilities and Gaussian correlation inequalities.

On the Gaussian measure of the intersection of symmetric, convex sets

The Gaussian Correlation Conjecture states that for any two symmetric, convex sets in n-dimensional space and for any centered, Gaussian measure on that space, the measure of the intersection is greater than or equal to the product of the measures. In this paper we obtain several results which substantiate this conjecture. For example, in the standard Gaussian case, we show there is a positive constant, c, such that the conjecture is true if the two sets are in the Euclidean ball of radius $c\sqrt{n}$. Further we show that if for every n the conjecture is true when the sets are in the Euclidean ball of radius $\sqrt{n}$, then it is true in general. Our most concrete result is that the conjecture is true if the two sets are (arbitrary) centered ellipsoids.

On Weakly Null FDD's in Banach Spaces

In this paper we show that every sequence (F_n) of finite dimensional subspaces of a real or complex Banach space with increasing dimensions can be ``refined'' to yield an F.D.D. (G_n), still having increasing dimensions, so that either every bounded sequence (x_n), with x_n in G_n for n in N, is weakly null, or every normalized sequence (x_n), with x_n in G_n for n in N, is equivalent to the unit vector basis of l_1. Crucial to the proof are two stabilization results concerning Lipschitz functions on finite dimensional normed spaces. These results also lead to other applications. We show, for example, that every infinite dimensional Banach space X contains an F.D.D. (F_n), with lim_{n to infty} dim (F_n)=infty, so that all normalized sequences (x_n), with x_n in F_n, n in N, have the same spreading model over X. This spreading model must necessarily be 1-unconditional over X.

The Distorion Problem

We prove that Hilbert space is distortable and, in fact, arbitrarily distortable. This means that for all lambda >1 there exists an equivalent norm |.| on l_2 such that for all infinite dimensional subspaces Y of l_2 there exist x,y in Y with ||x||_2 = ||y||_2 =1 yet |x| >lambda |y|. We also prove that if X is any infinite dimensional Banach space with an unconditional basis then the unit sphere of X and the unit sphere of l_1 are uniformly homeomorphic if and only if X does not contain l_infty^n's uniformly.
