A four-mean theorem and its application to pseudospectra

Let $N\ge 4$. We show that, if $x_1,\dots,x_N$ and $y_1,\dots,y_N$ are $N$-tuples of strictly positive numbers whose arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means agree, then \[ \max_j x_j <(N-2)\max_j y_j \quad\text{and}\quad \min_j x_j <(N-2)\min_j y_j. \] This is used to show that, if $N\ge4$ and $A,B$ are $N\times N$ matrices with super-identical pseudospectra, then, for every polynomial $p$, we have \[ \|p(A)\|< \sqrt{N-2}\|p(B)\|, \] unless $p(A)=p(B)=0$. This improves a previously known inequality to the point of being sharp, at least for $N=4$.

An abstract approach to the Crouzeix conjecture

Let $A$ be a uniform algebra, $θ:A\to M_n(\mathbb{C})$ be a continuous homomorphism and $α:A\to A$ be an antilinear contraction such that \[ \|θ(f)+θ(α(f))^*\|\le 2\|f\| \quad(f\in A). \] We show that $\|θ\|\le 1+\sqrt{2}$, and that $1+\sqrt2$ is sharp. We conjecture that, if further $α(1)=1$, then we may conclude that $\|θ\|\le2$. This would yield a positive solution to the Crouzeix conjecture on numerical ranges. In support of our conjecture, we prove that it is true in two special cases. We also discuss a completely bounded version of our conjecture that brings into play ideas from dilation theory.

Application of the Cramér-Wold theorem to testing for invariance under group actions

We address the problem of testing for the invariance of a probability measure under the action of a group of linear transformations. We propose a procedure based on consideration of one-dimensional projections, justified using a variant of the Cramér-Wold theorem. Our test procedure is powerful, computationally efficient, and dimension-independent, extending even to the case of infinite-dimensional spaces (multivariate functional data). It includes, as special cases, tests for exchangeability and sign-invariant exchangeability. We compare our procedure with some previous proposals in these cases, in a small simulation study. The paper concludes with two real-data examples.

Failure of Approximation of Odd Functions by Odd Polynomials

We construct a Hilbert holomorphic function space $H$ on the unit disk such that the polynomials are dense in $H$, but the odd polynomials are not dense in the odd functions in $H$. As a consequence, there exists a function $f$ in $H$ that lies outside the closed linear span of its Taylor partial sums $s_n(f)$, so it cannot be approximated by any triangular summability method applied to the $s_n(f)$. We also show that there exists a function $f$ in $H$ that lies outside the closed linear span of its radial dilates $f_r, ~r<1$.

A Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem for modules and applications to holomorphic function spaces

We generalize the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem to modules. As an application, we show that every linear functional on a Hardy space that is non-zero on outer functions is a multiple of a point evaluation. A further consequence is that every linear endomorphism of a Hardy space that maps outer functions to nowhere-zero functions is a weighted composition operator. In neither case is continuity assumed. We also consider some extensions to other function spaces, including the Bergman, Dirichlet and Besov spaces, the little Bloch space and VMOA.

Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

We consider Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights. This class contains both the harmonic weights and the power weights. Our main result is a characterization of the Dirichlet spaces with superharmonic weights that can be identified as de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. As an application, we obtain the dilation inequality \[ {\cal D}_ω(f_r)\le \frac{2r}{1+r}{\cal D}_ω(f) \qquad(0\le r<1), \] where ${\cal D}_ω$ denotes the Dirichlet integral with superharmonic weight $ω$, and $f_r(z):=f(rz)$ is the $r$-dilation of the holomorphic function $f$.

On mapping theorems for numerical range

Let $T$ be an operator on a Hilbert space $H$ with numerical radius $w(T)\le1$. According to a theorem of Berger and Stampfli, if $f$ is a function in the disk algebra such that $f(0)=0$, then $w(f(T))\le\|f\|_\infty$. We give a new and elementary proof of this result using finite Blaschke products. A well-known result relating numerical radius and norm says $\|T\| \leq 2w(T)$. We obtain a local improvement of this estimate, namely, if $w(T)\le1$ then \[ \|Tx\|^2\le 2+2\sqrt{1-|\langle Tx,x\rangle|^2} \qquad(x\in H,~\|x\|\le1). \] Using this refinement, we give a simplified proof of Drury's teardrop theorem, which extends the Berger-Stampfli theorem to the case $f(0)\ne0$.

Computation of Analytic Capacity and applications to the Subadditivity Problem

We develop a least-squares method for computing the analytic capacity of compact plane sets with piecewise-analytic boundary. The method furnishes rigorous upper and lower bounds which converge to the true value of the capacity. Several illustrative examples are presented. We are led to formulate a conjecture which, if true, would imply that analytic capacity is subadditive. The conjecture is proved in a special case.
