Inducing Heat Reversal in a Three-Qubit Spin Chain

By the standard second law of thermodynamics, heat spontaneously flows from a hotter body to a colder body. However, quantum systems in which quantum correlations play a prominent role can exhibit a non-classical reversal of such heat flow. We propose a quantum system consisting of a chain of qubits, each in local Gibbs states, where only adjacent qubits are allowed to thermally interact. By controlling initial quantum correlations along the chain, we then demonstrate non-classical heat reversal for the special case of a three-qubit chain on a quantum computer. We explore multiple initial conditions for the spin chain to showcase exotic behaviour such as the preferential pumping of heat afforded by unequal initial correlations between adjacent pairs of qubits, reinforcing the role that initial correlations play in influencing the dynamics of heat flow.

Symmetry protected topological phases beyond groups: The q-deformed bilinear-biquadratic spin chain

We study the phase diagram of the $SO_q(3)$ quantum group invariant spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic spin chain for real values of $q>1$. Numerical computations suggest that the chain has at least three clearly distinguished phases: A chiral analogue of the Haldane phase, a dimerized phase and a ferromagnetic phase. In contrast, the counterpart of the extended critical region that is known to exist for $q=1$ remains elusive. Our results show that the Haldane phase fails to exhibit a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum but that the degeneracy is restored upon a suitable $q$-deformation of the entanglement Hamiltonian which can be interpreted as a Zeeman field. The structure of the phase diagram is confirmed through analytical calculations in the extreme anisotropic limit $q\to\infty$. Our results suggest that symmetries of the form $U_q[su(2)]$ for distinct choices of $q$ should be interpreted as one single family instead of separate symmetries when defining SPT phases, leading naturally to the notion of a qSPT phase.

On conformal field theories based on Takiff superalgebras

We revisit the construction of conformal field theories based on Takiff algebras and superalgebras that was introduced by Babichenko and Ridout. Takiff superalgebras can be thought of as truncated current superalgebras with Z-grading which arise from taking p copies of a Lie superalgebra g and placing them in the degrees s=0,...,p-1. Using suitably defined non-degenerate invariant forms we show that Takiff superalgebras give rise to families of conformal field theories with central charge c=p sdim(g). The resulting conformal field theories are defined in the standard way, i.e. they lend themselves to a Lagrangian description in terms of a WZW model and their chiral energy momentum tensor is the one obtained naturally from the usual Sugawara construction. In view of their intricate representation theory they provide interesting examples of conformal field theories.

Symmetry protected topological phases beyond groups: The q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model

We argue that the $q$-deformed spin-1 AKLT Hamiltonian should be regarded as a representative of a symmetry protected topological phase. Even though it fails to exhibit any of the standard symmetries known to protect the Haldane phase it still displays all characteristics of this phase: Fractionalized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ boundary spins, non-trivial string order and - when using an appropriate definition - a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum. We trace these properties back to the existence of an $SO_q(3)$ quantum group symmetry and speculate about potential links to discrete duality symmetries. We expect our findings and methods to be relevant for the identification, characterization and classification of other symmetry-protected topological phases with non-standard symmetries.

Conformal field theory and the non-abelian $SU(2)_k$ chiral spin liquid

We construct a family of 1D and 2D long-range SU(2) spin models as parent Hamiltonians associated with infinite dimensional matrix product states that arise from simple current correlation functions in $SU(2)_k$ WZW models. Our results provide a conformal field theory foundation for recent proposals by Greiter and coauthors regarding the realization of non-abelian chiral spin liquids. We explain, in particular, how the symmetrization procedure for the amplitudes of the ground state wave function suggested in Ref. arXiv:0903.4547 originates from the conformal field theory description.

Infinite Matrix Product States for long range SU(N) spin models

We construct 1D and 2D long-range SU(N) spin models as parent Hamiltonians associated with infinite matrix product states. The latter are constructed from correlators of primary fields in the SU(N) level 1 WZW model. Since the resulting groundstates are of Gutzwiller-Jastrow type, our models can be regarded as lattice discretizations of fractional quantum Hall systems. We then focus on two specific types of 1D spin chains with spins located on the unit circle, a uniform and an alternating arrangement. For an equidistant distribution of identical spins we establish an explicit connection to the SU(N) Haldane-Shastry model, thereby proving that the model is critical and described by a SU(N) level 1 WZW model. In contrast, while turning out to be critical as well, the alternating model can only be treated numerically. Our numerical results rely on a reformulation of the original problem in terms of loop models.

Superspace conformal field theory

Conformal sigma models and WZW models on coset superspaces provide important examples of logarithmic conformal field theories. They possess many applications to problems in string and condensed matter theory. We review recent results and developments, including the general construction of WZW models on type I supergroups, the classification of conformal sigma models and their embedding into string theory.

A discriminating string order parameter for topological phases of gapped SU(N) spin chains

One-dimensional gapped spin chains with symmetry PSU(N) = SU(N)/Z_N are known to possess N different topological phases. In this paper, we introduce a non-local string order parameter which characterizes each of these N phases unambiguously. Numerics confirm that our order parameter allows to extract a quantized topological invariant from a given non-degenerate gapped ground state wave function. Discontinuous jumps in the discrete topological order that arise when varying physical couplings in the Hamiltonian may be used to detect quantum phase transitions between different topological phases.

From symmetry-protected topological order to Landau order

Focusing on the particular case of the discrete symmetry group Z_N x Z_N, we establish a mapping between symmetry protected topological phases and symmetry broken phases for one-dimensional spin systems. It is realized in terms of a non-local unitary transformation which preserves the locality of the Hamiltonian. We derive the image of the mapping for various phases involved, including those with a mixture of symmetry breaking and topological protection. Our analysis also applies to topological phases in spin systems with arbitrary continuous symmetries of unitary, orthogonal and symplectic type. This is achieved by identifying suitable subgroups Z_N x Z_N in all these groups, together with a bijection between the individual classes of projective representations.

On topological phases of spin chains

Symmetry protected topological phases of one-dimensional spin systems have been classified using group cohomology. In this paper, we revisit this problem for general spin chains which are invariant under a continuous on-site symmetry group G. We evaluate the relevant cohomology groups and find that the topological phases are in one-to-one correspondence with the elements of the fundamental group of G if G is compact, simple and connected and if no additional symmetries are imposed. For spin chains with symmetry PSU(N)=SU(N)/Z_N our analysis implies the existence of N distinct topological phases. For symmetry groups of orthogonal, symplectic or exceptional type we find up to four different phases. Our work suggests a natural generalization of Haldane's conjecture beyond SU(2).

Topological and symmetry broken phases of Z_N parafermions in one dimension

We classify the gapped phases of Z_N parafermions in one dimension and construct a representative of each phase. Even in the absence of additional symmetries besides parafermionic parity, parafermions may be realized in a variety of phases, one for each divisor n of N. The phases can be characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking, topology, or a mixture of the two. Purely topological phases arise if n is a unitary divisor, i.e. if n and N/n are co-prime. Our analysis is based on the explicit realization of all symmetry broken gapped phases in the dual Z_N-invariant quantum spin chains.

Conformal superspace sigma-models

We review recent developments in the context of two-dimensional conformally invariant sigma-models. These quantum field theories play a prominent role in the covariant superstring quantization in flux backgrounds and in the analysis of disordered systems. We present supergroup WZW models as primary examples of logarithmic conformal field theories, whose structure is almost entirely determined by the underlying supergeometry. In particular, we discuss the harmonic analysis on supergroups and supercosets and point out the subtleties of Lie superalgebra representation theory that are responsible for the emergence of logarithmic representations. Furthermore, special types of marginal deformations of supergroup WZW models are studied which only exist if the Killing form is vanishing. We show how exact expressions for anomalous dimensions of boundary fields can be derived using quasi-abelian perturbation theory. Finally, the knowledge of the exact spectrum is used to motivate a duality between the OSP(4|2) symmetric Gross-Neveu model and the S(3|2) supersphere sigma-model.

Non-chiral current algebras for deformed supergroup WZW models

We study deformed WZW models on supergroups with vanishing Killing form. The deformation is generated by the isotropic current-current perturbation which is exactly marginal under these assumptions. It breaks half of the global isometries of the original supergroup. The current corresponding to the remaining symmetry is conserved but its components are neither holomorphic nor anti-holomorphic. We obtain the exact two- and three-point functions of this current and a four-point function in the first two leading orders of a 1/k expansion but to all orders in the deformation parameter. We further study the operator product algebra of the currents, the equal time commutators and the quantum equations of motion. The form of the equations of motion suggests the existence of non-local charges which generate a Yangian. Possible applications to string theory on Anti-de Sitter spaces and to condensed matter problems are briefly discussed.

The Sigma Model on Complex Projective Superspaces

The sigma model on complex projective superspaces CP^{S-1|S} gives rise to a continuous family of interacting 2D conformal field theories which are parametrized by the curvature radius R and the theta angle θ. Our main goal is to determine the spectrum of the model, non-perturbatively as a function of both parameters. We succeed to do so for all open boundary conditions preserving the full global symmetry of the model. In string theory parlor, these correspond to volume filling branes that are equipped with a monopole line bundle and connection. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we approach the problem within the continuum formulation. Combining combinatorial arguments with perturbative studies and some simple free field calculations, we determine a closed formula for the partition function of the theory. This is then tested numerically in the second part. There we propose a spin chain regularization of the CP^{S-1|S} model with open boundary conditions and use it to determine the spectrum at the conformal fixed point. The numerical results are in remarkable agreement with the continuum analysis.

The diagonal cosets of the Heisenberg group

In this paper we study the diagonal cosets of the non-compact H4 WZW model. Generalising earlier work by Antoniadis and Obers, we provide an exact world-sheet description for several families of non-maximally symmetric gravitational plane waves with background NS fluxes. We show that the sigma-models that correspond to an asymmetric action of the gauge group smoothly interpolate between singular and non-singular plane waves. We also analyse the representations of the coset chiral algebra and derive the spectrum of all the models.

Boundary Spectra in Superspace Sigma-Models

In this note we compute exact boundary spectra for D-instantons in sigma-models on the supergroup PSL(2|2). Our results are obtained through an explicit summation of the perturbative expansion for conformal dimensions to all orders in the curvature radius. The analysis exploits several remarkable properties of the perturbation series that arises from rescalings of the metric on PSL(2|2) relative to a fixed Wess-Zumino term. According to Berkovits, Vafa and Witten, the models are relevant in the context of string theory on AdS3 with non-vanishing RR-flux. The note concludes with a number of comments on various possible generalizations to other supergroups and higher dimensional supercoset theories.

Reflection and Transmission for Conformal Defects

We consider conformal defects joining two conformal field theories along a line. We define two new quantities associated to such defects in terms of expectation values of the stress tensors and we propose them as measures of the reflectivity and transmissivity of the defect. Their properties are investigated and they are computed in a number of examples. We obtain a complete answer for all defects in the Ising model and between certain pairs of minimal models. In the case of two conformal field theories with an enhanced symmetry we restrict ourselves to non-trivial defects that can be obtained by a coset construction.

The WZNW model on PSU(1,1|2)

According to the work of Berkovits, Vafa and Witten (hep-th/9902098), the non-linear sigma model on the supergroup PSU(1,1|2) is the essential building block for string theory on AdS(3)xS(3)xT(4). Models associated with a non-vanishing value of the RR flux can be obtained through a psu(1,1|2) invariant marginal deformation of the WZNW model on PSU(1,1|2). We take this as a motivation to present a manifestly psu(1,1|2) covariant construction of the model at the Wess-Zumino point, corresponding to a purely NSNS background 3-form flux. At this point the model possesses an enhanced psu(1,1|2) current algebra symmetry whose representation theory, including explicit character formulas, is developed systematically in the first part of the paper. The space of vertex operators and a free fermion representation for their correlation functions is our main subject in the second part. Contrary to a widespread claim, bosonic and fermionic fields are necessarily coupled to each other. The interaction changes the supersymmetry transformations, with drastic consequences for the multiplets of localized normalizable states in the model. It is only this fact which allows us to decompose the full state space into multiplets of the global supersymmetry. We analyze these decompositions systematically as a preparation for a forthcoming study of the RR deformation.

Non-commutative gauge theory of twisted D-branes

In this work we propose new non-commutative gauge theories that describe the dynamics of branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes on group manifolds. Our proposal is based on a careful analysis of the exact microscopic solution and it generalizes the matrix models (`fuzzy gauge theories') that are used to study e.g. the bound state formation of point-like branes in a curved background. We also construct a large number of classical solutions and interpret them in terms of condensation processes on branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes.

Symmetry Breaking Boundary States and Defect Lines

We present a large and universal class of new boundary states which break part of the chiral symmetry in the underlying bulk theory. Our formulas are based on coset constructions and they can be regarded as a non-abelian generalization of the ideas that were used by Maldacena, Moore and Seiberg to build new boundary states for SU(N). We apply our expressions to construct defect lines joining two conformal field theories with possibly different central charge. Such defects can occur e.g. in the AdS/CFT correspondence when branes extend to the boundary of the AdS-space.
