From Gaudin Integrable Models to $d$-dimensional Multipoint Conformal Blocks

In this work we initiate an integrability-based approach to multipoint conformal blocks for higher dimensional conformal field theories. Our main observation is that conformal blocks for $N$-point functions may be considered as eigenfunctions of integrable Gaudin Hamiltonians. This provides us with a complete set of differential equations that can be used to evaluate multipoint blocks.

Gaudin Models and Multipoint Conformal Blocks III: Comb channel coordinates and OPE factorisation

We continue the exploration of multipoint scalar comb channel blocks for conformal field theories in 3D and 4D. The central goal here is to construct novel comb channel cross ratios that are well adapted to perform projections onto all intermediate primary fields. More concretely, our new set of cross ratios includes three for each intermediate mixed symmetry tensor exchange. These variables are designed such that the associated power series expansion coincides with the sum over descendants. The leading term of this expansion is argued to factorise into a product of lower point blocks. We establish this remarkable factorisation property by studying the limiting behaviour of the Gaudin Hamiltonians that are used to characterise multipoint conformal blocks. For six points we can map the eigenvalue equations for the limiting Gaudin differential operators to Casimir equations of spinning four-point blocks.

The Superconformal Xing Equation

Crossing symmetry provides a powerful tool to access the non-perturbative dynamics of conformal and superconformal field theories. Here we develop the mathematical formalism that allows to construct the crossing equations for arbitrary four-point functions in theories with superconformal symmetry of type I, including all superconformal field theories in $d=4$ dimensions. Our advance relies on a supergroup theoretic construction of tensor structures that generalizes an approach which was put forward in \cite{Buric:2019dfk} for bosonic theories. When combined with our recent construction of the relevant superblocks, we are able to derive the crossing symmetry constraint in particular for four-point functions of arbitrary long multiplets in all 4-dimensional superconformal field theories.

Superconformal Blocks: General Theory

In this work we launch a systematic theory of superconformal blocks for four-point functions of arbitrary supermultiplets. Our results apply to a large class of superconformal field theories including 4-dimensional models with any number $\mathcal{N}$ of supersymmetries. The central new ingredient is a universal construction of the relevant Casimir differential equations. In order to find these equations, we model superconformal blocks as functions on the supergroup and pick a distinguished set of coordinates. The latter are chosen so that the superconformal Casimir operator can be written as a perturbation of the Casimir operator for spinning bosonic blocks by a fermionic (nilpotent) term. Solutions to the associated eigenvalue problem can be obtained through a quantum mechanical perturbation theory that truncates at some finite order so that all results are exact. We illustrate the general theory at the example of $d=1$ dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry for which we recover known superblocks. The paper concludes with an outlook to 4-dimensional blocks with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry.

Superintegrability of $d$-dimensional Conformal Blocks

We observe that conformal blocks of scalar 4-point functions in a $d$-dimensional conformal field theory can mapped to eigenfunctions of a 2-particle hyperbolic Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian. The latter describes two coupled Pöschl-Teller particles. Their interaction, whose strength depends smoothly on the dimension $d$, is known to be superintegrable. Our observation enables us to exploit the rich mathematical literature on Calogero-Sutherland models in deriving various results for conformal field theory. These include an explicit construction of conformal blocks in terms of Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions and a remarkable duality that relates the blocks of theories in different dimensions.

Spectra of Sigma Models on Semi-Symmetric Spaces

Sigma models on semi-symmetric spaces provide the central building block for string theories on AdS backgrounds. Under certain conditions on the global supersymmetry group they can be made one-loop conformal by adding an appropriate fermionic Wess-Zumino term. We determine the full one-loop dilation operator of the theory. It involves an interesting new XXZ-like interaction term. Eigenvalues of our dilation operator, i.e. the one-loop anomalous dimensions, are computed for a few examples.

Towards a Worldsheet Description of N=8 Supergravity

In this note we address the worldsheet description of 4-dimensional N=8 supergravity using ambitwistors. After gauging an appropriate current algebra, we argue that the only physical vertex operators correspond to the N=8 supermultiplet. It has previously been shown that worldsheet correlators give rise to supergravity tree level scattering amplitudes. We extend this work by proposing a definition for genus-one amplitudes that passes several consistency checks such as exhibiting modular invariance and reproducing the expected infrared behavior of 1-loop supergravity amplitudes.

Chiral Primaries in Strange Metals

It was suggested recently that the study of 1-dimensional QCD with fermions in the adjoint representation could lead to an interesting toy model for strange metals and their holographic formulation. In the high density regime, the infrared physics of this theory is described by a constrained free fermion theory with an emergent {\cal N}=(2,2) superconformal symmetry. In order to narrow the choice of potential holographic duals, we initiate a systematic search for chiral primaries in this model. We argue that the bosonic part of the superconformal algebra can be extended to a coset chiral algebra of the form {\cal W}_N =\SO(2N^2-2)_1/\SU(N)_{2N}. In terms of this algebra the spectrum of the low energy theory decomposes into a finite number of sectors which are parametrized by special necklaces. We compute the corresponding characters and partition functions and determine the set of chiral primaries for N \leq 5.

Chiral Ring of Strange Metals: The Multicolor Limit

The low energy limit of a dense 2D adjoint QCD is described by a family of ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric coset conformal field theories. In previous work we constructed chiral primaries for a small number $N < 6$ of colors. Our aim in the present note is to determine the chiral ring in the multicolor limit where $N$ is sent to infinity. We shall find that chiral primaries are labeled by partitions and identify the ring they generate as the ring of Schur polynomials. Our findings impose strong constraints on the possible dual description through string theory in an $AdS_3$ compactification.

High-Gradient Operators in the psl(2|2) Gross-Neveu Model

It has been observed more than 25 years ago that sigma model perturbation theory suffers from strongly RG-relevant high-gradient operators. The phenomenon was first seen in 1-loop calculations for the O(N) vector model and it is known to persist at least to two loops. More recently, Ryu et al. suggested that a certain deformation of the psl(N|N) WZNW-model at level k = 1, or equivalently the psl(N|N) Gross-Neveu model, could be free of RG-relevant high-gradient operators and they tested their suggestion to leading order in perturbation theory. In this note we establish the absence of strongly RG-relevant high-gradient operators in the psl(2|2) Gross-Neveu model to all loops. In addition, we determine the spectrum for a large subsector of the model at infinite coupling and observe that all scaling weights become half-integer. Evidence for a conjectured relation with the CP^1|2 sigma model is not found.

On the Spectrum of Superspheres

Sigma models on coset superspaces, such as odd dimensional superspheres, play an important role in physics and in particular the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this work we apply recent general results on the spectrum of coset space models and on supergroup WZNW models to study the conformal sigma model with target space S^{3|2}. We construct its vertex operators and provide explicit formulas for their anomalous dimensions, at least to leading order in the sigma model coupling. The results are used to revisit a non-perturbative duality between the supersphere and the OSP(4|2) Gross-Neveu model that was conjectured by Candu and Saleur. With the help of powerful all-loop results for 1/2 BPS operators in the Gross-Neveu model we are able to recover the entire zero mode spectrum of the sigma model at a certain finite value of the Gross-Neveu coupling. In addition, we argue that the sigma model constraints and equations of motion are implemented correctly in the dual Gross-Neveu description. On the other hand, high(er) gradient operators of the sigma model are not all accounted for. It is possible that this discrepancy is related to an instability from high gradient operators that has previously been observed in the context of Anderson localization.

Superspace conformal field theory

Conformal sigma models and WZW models on coset superspaces provide important examples of logarithmic conformal field theories. They possess many applications to problems in string and condensed matter theory. We review recent results and developments, including the general construction of WZW models on type I supergroups, the classification of conformal sigma models and their embedding into string theory.

The universal Racah-Wigner symbol for Uq(osp(1|2))

We propose a new and elegant formula for the Racah-Wigner symbol of self-dual continuous series of representations of Uq(osp(1|2)). It describes the entire fusing matrix for both NS and R sector of N=1 supersymmetric Liouville field theory. In the NS sector, our formula is related to an expression derived in [1]. Through analytic continuation in the spin variables, our universal expression reproduces known formulas for the Racah-Wigner coefficients of finite dimensional representations.

Self-dual Continuous Series of Representations for U_q(sl(2)) and U_q(osp(1|2))

We determine the Clebsch-Gordan and Racah-Wigner coefficients for continuous series of representations of the quantum deformed algebras U_q(sl(2)) and U_q(osp(1|2)). While our results for the former algebra reproduce formulas by Ponsot and Teschner, the expressions for the orthosymplectic algebra are new. Up to some normalization factors, the associated Racah-Wigner coefficients are shown to agree with the fusing matrix in the Neveu-Schwarz sector of N=1 supersymmetric Liouville field theory.

Spectra of Coset Sigma Models

We compute the complete 1-loop spectrum of anomalous dimensions for the bulk fields of non-linear sigma models on symmetric coset (super)spaces G/H, both with and without world-sheet supersymmetry. In addition, we provide two new methods for the construction of partition functions in the infinite radius limit and demonstrate their efficiency in the case of (super)sphere sigma models. Our results apply to a large number of target spaces including superspheres and superprojective spaces such as the N=2 sigma model on CP(3|4).

Anomalous Dimensions in Deformed WZW Models on Supergroups

We investigate a class of current-current, Gross-Neveu like, perturbations of WZW models in which the full left-right affine symmetry is broken to the diagonal global algebra only. Our analysis focuses on those supergroups for which such a perturbation preserves conformal invariance. A detailed calculation of the 2-point functions of affine primary operators to 3-loops is presented. Furthermore, we derive an exact formula for the anomalous dimensions of a large subset of fields to all orders in perturbation theory. Possible applications of our results, including the study of non-perturbative dualities, are outlined.

Conformal superspace sigma-models

We review recent developments in the context of two-dimensional conformally invariant sigma-models. These quantum field theories play a prominent role in the covariant superstring quantization in flux backgrounds and in the analysis of disordered systems. We present supergroup WZW models as primary examples of logarithmic conformal field theories, whose structure is almost entirely determined by the underlying supergeometry. In particular, we discuss the harmonic analysis on supergroups and supercosets and point out the subtleties of Lie superalgebra representation theory that are responsible for the emergence of logarithmic representations. Furthermore, special types of marginal deformations of supergroup WZW models are studied which only exist if the Killing form is vanishing. We show how exact expressions for anomalous dimensions of boundary fields can be derived using quasi-abelian perturbation theory. Finally, the knowledge of the exact spectrum is used to motivate a duality between the OSP(4|2) symmetric Gross-Neveu model and the S(3|2) supersphere sigma-model.

Liouville's Imaginary Shadow

N=1 super Liouville field theory is one of the simplest non-rational conformal field theories. It possesses various important extensions and interesting applications, e.g. to the AGT relation with 4D gauge theory or the construction of the OSP(1|2) WZW model. In both setups, the N=1 Liouville field is accompanied by an additional free fermion. Recently, Belavin et al. suggested a bosonization of the product theory in terms of two bosonic Liouville fields. While one of these Liouville fields is standard, the second turns out to be imaginary (or time-like). We extend the proposal to the R sector and perform extensive checks based on detailed comparison of 3-point functions involving several super-conformal primaries and descendants. On the basis of such strong evidence we sketch a number of interesting potential applications of this intriguing bosonization.

Cohomological Reduction of Sigma Models

This article studies some features of quantum field theories with internal supersymmetry, focusing mainly on 2-dimensional non-linear sigma models which take values in a coset superspace. It is discussed how BRST operators from the target space supersymmetry algebra can be used to identify subsectors which are often simpler than the original model and may allow for an explicit computation of correlation functions. After an extensive discussion of the general reduction scheme, we present a number of interesting examples, including symmetric superspaces $G/G^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ and coset superspaces of the form $G/G^{\mathbb{Z}_4}$.

N=2 Superconformal Symmetry in Super Coset Models

We extend the Kazama-Suzuki construction of models with N=(2,2) world-sheet supersymmetry to cosets S/K of supergroups. Among the admissible target spaces that allow for an extension to N=2 superconformal algebras are some simple Lie supergroups, including PSL(N|N). Our general analysis is illustrated at the example of the N=1 WZNW model on GL(1|1). After constructing its N=2 superconformal algebra we determine the (anti-)chiral ring of the theory. It exhibits an interesting interplay between world-sheet and target space supersymmetry.

The Sigma Model on Complex Projective Superspaces

The sigma model on complex projective superspaces CP^{S-1|S} gives rise to a continuous family of interacting 2D conformal field theories which are parametrized by the curvature radius R and the theta angle θ. Our main goal is to determine the spectrum of the model, non-perturbatively as a function of both parameters. We succeed to do so for all open boundary conditions preserving the full global symmetry of the model. In string theory parlor, these correspond to volume filling branes that are equipped with a monopole line bundle and connection. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we approach the problem within the continuum formulation. Combining combinatorial arguments with perturbative studies and some simple free field calculations, we determine a closed formula for the partition function of the theory. This is then tested numerically in the second part. There we propose a spin chain regularization of the CP^{S-1|S} model with open boundary conditions and use it to determine the spectrum at the conformal fixed point. The numerical results are in remarkable agreement with the continuum analysis.

Boundary Correlators in Supergroup WZNW Models

We investigate correlation functions for maximally symmetric boundary conditions in the WZNW model on GL(1|1). Special attention is payed to volume filling branes. Generalizing earlier ideas for the bulk sector, we set up a Kac-Wakimoto-like formalism for the boundary model. This first order formalism is then used to calculate bulk-boundary 2-point functions and the boundary 3-point functions of the model. The note ends with a few comments on correlation functions of atypical fields, point-like branes and generalizations to other supergroups.

The FZZ-Duality Conjecture - A Proof

We prove that the cigar conformal field theory is dual to the Sine-Liouville model, as conjectured originally by Fateev, Zamolodchikov and Zamolodchikov. Since both models possess the same chiral algebra, our task is to show that correlations of all tachyon vertex operators agree. We accomplish this goal through an off-critical version of the geometric Langlands duality for sl(2). More explicitly, we combine the well-known self-duality of Liouville theory with an intriguing correspondence between the cigar and Liouville field theory. The latter is derived through a path integral treatment. After a very detailed discussion of genus zero amplitudes, we extend the duality to arbitrary closed surfaces.

Boundary Spectra in Superspace Sigma-Models

In this note we compute exact boundary spectra for D-instantons in sigma-models on the supergroup PSL(2|2). Our results are obtained through an explicit summation of the perturbative expansion for conformal dimensions to all orders in the curvature radius. The analysis exploits several remarkable properties of the perturbation series that arises from rescalings of the metric on PSL(2|2) relative to a fixed Wess-Zumino term. According to Berkovits, Vafa and Witten, the models are relevant in the context of string theory on AdS3 with non-vanishing RR-flux. The note concludes with a number of comments on various possible generalizations to other supergroups and higher dimensional supercoset theories.

The WZNW model on PSU(1,1|2)

According to the work of Berkovits, Vafa and Witten (hep-th/9902098), the non-linear sigma model on the supergroup PSU(1,1|2) is the essential building block for string theory on AdS(3)xS(3)xT(4). Models associated with a non-vanishing value of the RR flux can be obtained through a psu(1,1|2) invariant marginal deformation of the WZNW model on PSU(1,1|2). We take this as a motivation to present a manifestly psu(1,1|2) covariant construction of the model at the Wess-Zumino point, corresponding to a purely NSNS background 3-form flux. At this point the model possesses an enhanced psu(1,1|2) current algebra symmetry whose representation theory, including explicit character formulas, is developed systematically in the first part of the paper. The space of vertex operators and a free fermion representation for their correlation functions is our main subject in the second part. Contrary to a widespread claim, bosonic and fermionic fields are necessarily coupled to each other. The interaction changes the supersymmetry transformations, with drastic consequences for the multiplets of localized normalizable states in the model. It is only this fact which allows us to decompose the full state space into multiplets of the global supersymmetry. We analyze these decompositions systematically as a preparation for a forthcoming study of the RR deformation.

Non-commutative gauge theory of twisted D-branes

In this work we propose new non-commutative gauge theories that describe the dynamics of branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes on group manifolds. Our proposal is based on a careful analysis of the exact microscopic solution and it generalizes the matrix models (`fuzzy gauge theories') that are used to study e.g. the bound state formation of point-like branes in a curved background. We also construct a large number of classical solutions and interpret them in terms of condensation processes on branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes.

Symmetry Breaking Boundary States and Defect Lines

We present a large and universal class of new boundary states which break part of the chiral symmetry in the underlying bulk theory. Our formulas are based on coset constructions and they can be regarded as a non-abelian generalization of the ideas that were used by Maldacena, Moore and Seiberg to build new boundary states for SU(N). We apply our expressions to construct defect lines joining two conformal field theories with possibly different central charge. Such defects can occur e.g. in the AdS/CFT correspondence when branes extend to the boundary of the AdS-space.

D-Branes in Coset Models

The analysis of D-branes in coset models G/H provides a natural extension of recent studies on branes in WZW-theory and it has various interesting applications to physically relevant models. In this work we develop a reduction procedure that allows to construct the non-commutative gauge theories which govern the dynamics of branes in G/H. We obtain a large class of solutions and interprete the associated condensation processes geometrically. The latter are used to propose conservation laws for the dynamics of branes in coset models at large level k. In super-symmetric theories, conserved charges are argued to take their values in the representation ring of the denominator theory. Finally, we apply the general results to study boundary fixed points in two examples, namely for parafermions and minimal models.

Open Strings in Simple Current Orbifolds

We study branes and open strings in a large class of orbifolds of a curved background using microscopic techniques of boundary conformal field theory. In particular, we obtain factorizing operator product expansions of open string vertex operators for such branes. Applications include branes in Z2 orbifolds of the SU(2) WZW model and in the D-series of unitary minimal models considered previously by Runkel.

Branes on Group Manifolds, Gluon Condensates, and twisted K-theory

In this work we study the dynamics of branes on group manifolds G deep in the stringy regime. After giving a brief overview of the various branes that can be constructed within the boundary conformal field theory approach, we analyze in detail the condensation processes that occur on stacks of such branes. At large volume our discussion is based on certain effective gauge theories on non-commutative `fuzzy' spaces. Using the `absorption of the boundary spin'-principle which was formulated by Affleck and Ludwig in their work on the Kondo model, we extrapolate the brane dynamics into the stringy regime. For supersymmetric theories, the resulting condensation processes turn out to be consistent with the existence of certain conserved charges taking values in some non-trivial discrete abelian groups. We obtain strong constraints on these charge groups for G = SU(N). The results may be compared with a recent proposal of Bouwknegt and Mathai according to which charge groups on curved spaces X (with a non-vanishing NSNS 3-form field strength H) are given by the twisted K-groups K*_H(X).

D-branes at Singular Curves of Calabi-Yau Compactifications

We study the Gepner model description of D-branes in Calabi-Yau manifolds with singular curves. From a geometrical point of view, the resolution of singularities leads to additional homology cycles around which branes can wrap. Using techniques from conformal field theory we address the construction of boundary states for branes wrapping additional 3-cycles on the resolved Calabi-Yau manifold. Explicit formulas are provided for Z_2 singular curves.

Moduli Spaces of D-branes in CFT-backgrounds

D-branes in curved backgrounds can be treated with techniques of boundary conformal field theory. We discuss the influence of scalar condensates on such branes, i.e. perturbations of boundary conditions by marginal boundary operators. A general criterion is presented that guarantees a boundary perturbation to be truly marginal in all orders of perturbation theory. Our results on boundary deformations have several interesting applications which are sketched at the end of this note.
