$B\to D_1(2420)$ and $B\to D_1'(2430)$ form factors from QCD light-cone sum rules

We perform the first calculation of form factors in the semileptonic decays $B\!\to\! D_1(2420)\ellν_\ell$ and $B \to D_1^\prime (2430)\ell ν_\ell$ using QCD light-cone sum rules (LCSRs) with $B$-meson distribution amplitudes. In this calculation the $c$-quark mass is finite. Analytical expressions for two-particle contributions up to twist four are obtained. To disentangle the $D_1$ and $D_1^\prime$ contributions in the LCSRs, we suggest a novel approach that introduces a combination of two interpolating currents for these charmed mesons. To fix all the parameters in the LCSRs, we use the two-point QCD sum rules for the decay constants of $D_1$ and $D_1^\prime$ mesons augmented by a single experimental input, that is the $B \to D_1(2420)\ellν_\ell$ decay width. We provide numerical results for all $B\to D_1$ and $B\to D_1^\prime$ form factors. As a byproduct, we also obtain the $D_1$- and $D_1'$-meson decay constants and predict the lepton-flavour universality ratios $R(D_1)$ and $R(D_1')$.

CP Violation in Three-body $B$ Decays: A Model Ansatz

The mechanism of CP violation remains one of the puzzles in particle physics. Key to understanding this phenomenon are nonleptonic $B$ decays, especially multibody decays which exhibit large CP asymmetries in various regions of phase space. A full QCD-based theoretical description of these decays is still missing, requiring the use of models to fit the data. In this paper, we suggest a model ansatz which reflects the underlying physics and the known mechanism of CP violation via the CKM matrix. In addition, since CP violation is driven by the interference between amplitudes with and without valence charm quarks, we argue that the opening of the open-charm threshold may play an important role in generating CP violation in the high invariant mass region. We present a natural extension of the isobar model to incorporate these effects. We suggest an analysis of nonleptonic three-body $B$ decay data including this extension, which would be interesting as it may give new hints to the sources of CP violation both at low and high invariant mass.

The Heavy Quark Expansion for Inclusive Semileptonic Charm Decays Revisited

The Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) has become an extremely powerful tool in flavor physics. For charm decays, where the expansion parameters $α_s(m_c)$ and $Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_c$ are bigger than for bottom decays, it remains to be seen if the HQE can be applied with similar success. Nevertheless, to make optimal use of the plethora of data already available and coming in the near future, a better understanding of HQE for charm decays is crucial. This paper discusses in detail how the HQE for charm decays is set up, what is the role of four-quark (weak annihilation) operators and how this compares to the well understood bottom decays. Subtleties concerning radiative corrections and the charm mass scheme are briefly discussed. An experimental study of the relevant HQE hadronic matrix elements will then show if the HQE expansion for charm converges well enough. Besides serving as an important cross check for inclusive $B$ decays, in the end, this study might open the road for inclusive $|V_{cs}|$ and $|V_{cd}|$ extractions.

$B^0-\bar{B}^0$ Mixing at Next-to-Leading Order

We compute the perturbative corrections to the HQET sum rules for the matrix element of the ΔB=2 operator that determines the mass shift of $B^0$, $\bar{B}^0$ states. Technically, we obtain analytically the non-factorizable contributions at order $α_s$ to the bag parameter that first appear at the three-loop level. Together with the known non-perturbative corrections due to vacuum condensates and $1/m_b$ corrections, the full next-to-leading order result is now available. We present a numerical value for the renormalization group invariant bag parameter that is phenomenologically relevant and discuss comparison with recent lattice determinations.

Generalized Effective Operator Formalism for Decaying Systems

Systems of neutral kaons can be used to observe entanglement and the violation of Bell inequalities. The decay of these particles poses some problems, however, and recently an effective formalism for treating such systems has been derived. We generalize this formalism and make it applicable to other quantum systems that can be made to behave in a similar manner. As examples, we discuss two possible implementations of the generalized formalism using trapped ions such as $^{171}$Yb or $^{172}$Yb, which may be used to simulate kaonic behavior in a quantum optical system.

Revisiting Uraltsev's BPS limit for Heavy Quarks

Motivated by the recent experimental data of the values of the Heavy Quark Expansion parameters, in particular the spin-orbit and Darwin terms, we argue that nature actually may be close to a limit of QCD which has been suggested by Uraltsev more than ten years ago. Assuming that this limit is not accidental, we derive the relations among the Heavy Quark Expansion parameters that occur up to the order 1/mb^5.

$1/m$ Corrections for Orbitally Excited Heavy Mesons and the $1/2$ - $3/2$ Puzzle

We re-investigate the effects of the $1/m_c$ corrections on the spectrum of the lowest orbitally excited $D$-meson states. We argue that one should expect the $1/m_c$ corrections to induce a significant mixing between the two lowest lying $1^+$ states. We discuss the implications of this mixing and compute its effect on the semileptonic decays $B \to D^{**} \ell \barν$ and the strong $D^{**}$ decays.

Angular Analysis of New Physics Operators in polarized $τ\to 3 \ell$ Decays

In a bottom-up approach we investigate lepton-flavour violating processes $τ\to 3 \ell$ that are mediated by New Physics encoded in effective-theory operators of dimension six. While the opportunity to scrutinize the underlying operator structure has been investigated before, we explore the benefits of utilising the polarization direction of the initial $τ$ lepton and the angular distribution of the decay. Given the rarity of these events (if observed at all), we focus on integrated observables rather than spectra, such as partial rates and asymmetries. In an effort to estimate the number of events required to extract the coupling coefficients to the effective operators we perform a phenomenological study with virtual experiments.

Direct probes of flavor-changing neutral currents in $e^+e^-$ collisions

We propose a novel method to study flavor-changing neutral currents in the $e^+e^-\to D^{*0}$ and $e^+e^-\to B_{s}^* $ transitions, tuning the energy of $e^+e^-$- collisions to the mass of the narrow vector resonance $D^{*0}$ or $ B_{s}^*$. We present a thorough study of both short-distance and long-distance contributions to $e^+e^-\to D^{*0}$ in the Standard Model and investigate possible contributions of new physics in the charm sector. This process, albeit very rare, has clear advantages with respect to the $D^0 \to e^+e^-$ decay: the helicity suppression is absent, and a richer set of effective operators can be probed. Implications of the same proposal for $B_{s}^*$ are also discussed.

Extrapolation and unitarity bounds for the $B \to π$ form factor

We address the problem of extrapolating the vector form factor $f_{Bπ}^+$, which is relevant to $B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ decays, from the region of small to the region of large momentum transfer. As input, we use the QCD light-cone sum rule at small momentum transfer. We carry out a comprehensive Bayesian uncertainty analysis and obtain correlated uncertainties for the normalization and shape parameters of the form factor. The $z$-series parametrization for $f_{Bπ}^+$ is employed to extrapolate our results to large momentum transfer, and to compare with the lattice QCD results. To test the validity of our extrapolation we use the upper and lower bounds from the unitarity and positivity of the two-point correlator of heavy-light quark currents. This correlator is updated by including the NNLO perturbative term and the NLO correction to the quark condensate contribution. We demonstrate that an additional input including the form factor, its first and second derivative calculated at one value of momentum transfer from the light-cone sum rules, considerably improves the bounds. This only holds when the correlations between the form factor parameters are taken into account. We further combine our results with the latest experimental measurements of $B\to π\ell ν_\ell$ by the BaBar and Belle collaborations, and obtain $|V_{ub}|= (3.32^{+0.26}_{-0.22}) \cdot 10^{-3}$ from a Bayesian analysis.

Inclusive weak decays of heavy hadrons with power suppressed terms at NLO

Within the heavy quark expansion techniques for the heavy hadron weak decays we analytically compute the coefficient of the power suppressed dimension five chromo-magnetic operator at next-to-leading order of QCD perturbation theory with the full dependence on the final state quark mass. We present explicit expressions for the total width of inclusive semileptonic decays including the power suppressed terms and for a few moments of decay differential distributions. One of the important phenomenological applications of our results is precision analysis of the decays of bottom mesons to charmed final states and extraction of the numerical value for the CKM matrix entry |V_{cb}|.

Renormalization Group Evolution of Flavour Invariants

The fermion spectrum in the Standard Model (SM) exhibits hierarchical structures between the eigenvalues of the Yukawa matrices which determine the fermion masses, as well as certain hierarchical patterns in the mixing matrix that describes weak transitions between different fermion generations. A basis-independent description of the SM flavour structure can be given in terms of a complete set of flavour invariants. In this paper, we construct a convenient set of such invariants, and discuss the general form of the renormalization-group equations. We also discuss the simplifications that arise from exploiting hierarchies in Yukwawa couplings and mixings which are present in the SM or its minimal-flavour violating extensions.

Three-Body Non-Leptonic B Decays and QCD Factorization

We extend the framework of QCD factorization to non-leptonic $B$ decays into three light mesons, taking as an example the decay $B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^-$. We discuss the factorization properties of this decay in different regions of phase space. We argue that, in the limit of very large $b$-quark mass, the central region of the Dalitz plot can be described in terms of the $B \to π$ form factor and the $B$ and $π$ light-cone distribution amplitudes. The edges of the Dalitz plot, on the other hand, require different non-perturbative input: the $B \to ππ$ form factor and the two-pion distribution amplitude. We present the set-up for both regions to leading order in both $α_s$ and $Λ_{\rm QCD} / m_b$ and discuss how well the two descriptions merge. We argue that for realistic $B$-meson masses there is no perturbative center in the Dalitz plot, but that a systematic description might be possible in the context of two-pion states. As an example, we estimate the $B\toρπ$ branching fraction beyond the quasi-particle approximation. We also discuss the prospects for studies of three-body and quasi-two-body non-leptonic $B$ decays from QCD.

Disentangling the Decay Observables in $B^- \to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$

We study the semileptonic $b\to u$ transition in the decay mode $B^-\to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$. We define $B\to ππ$ form factors in the helicity basis, and study their properties in various kinematic limits, including form factor relations in the heavy-mass and large-energy limits, the decomposition into partial waves of the dipion system, and the resonant contribution of vector and scalar mesons. We show how angular observables in $B^-\to π^+π^-\ell^-\barν_\ell$ can be used to measure dipion form factors or to perform null tests of the Standard Model.

Improved Estimates for the Parameters of the Heavy Quark Expansion

We give improved estimates for the non-perturbative parameters appearing in the heavy quark expansion for inclusive decays. While the parameters appearing in low orders of this expansion can be extracted from data, the number of parameters in higher orders proliferates strongly, making a determination of these parameters from data impossible. Thus, one has to rely on theoretical estimates which may be obtained from an insertion of intermediate states. In this paper we refine this method and attempt to estimate the uncertainties of this approach.

Inclusive semileptonic B decays from QCD with NLO accuracy for power suppressed terms

We present the results of a calculation of the perturbative QCD corrections for the semileptonic inclusive width of a heavy flavored meson. Within the Heavy Quark Expansion we analytically compute the QCD correction to the coefficient of power suppressed contribution of the chromo-magnetic operator in the limit of vanishing mass of the final state quark. The important phenomenological applications are decays of bottom mesons, and to the less extend, charmed mesons.

Minimal Flavour Violation and Anomalous Top Decays

Top quark physics at the LHC may open a window to physics beyond the standard model and even lead us to an understanding of the phenomenon "flavour". However, current flavour data is a strong hint that no "new physics" with a generic flavour structure can be expected in the TeV scale. In turn, if there is "new physics" at the TeV scale, it must be "minimally flavour violating". This has become a widely accepted assumption for "new physics" models. In this paper we propose a model-independent scheme to test minimal flavour violation for the anomalous charged $Wtq$, $q\in{d,s,b}$, and flavour-changing $Vtq$, $q\in{u,c}$ and $V\in{Z,γ,g}$ couplings within an effective field theory framework, i.e., in a model-independent way. We perform a spurion analysis of our effective field theory approach and calculate the decay rates for the anomalous top-quark decays in terms of the effective couplings for different helicities by using a two-Higgs doublet model of type II, under the assumption that the top-quark is produced at a high-energy collision and decays as a quasi-free particle.

B-> D* zero-recoil formfactor and the heavy quark expansion in QCD: a systematic study

We present a QCD analysis of heavy quark mesons focussing on the B -> D* formfactor at zero recoil, F_D*(1). An advanced treatment of the perturbative corrections in the Wilsonian approach is presented. We estimate the higher-order power corrections to the OPE sum rule and describe a refined analysis of the nonresonant continuum contribution. In the framework of a model-independent approach, we show that the inelastic contribution in the phenomenological part of the OPE is related to the mQ-dependence of the hyperfine splitting and conclude that the former is large, lowering the prediction for F_D*(1) down to about 0.86. This likewise implies an enhanced yield of radial and D-wave charm excitations in semileptonic B decays and alleviates the problem with the inclusive yield of the wide excited states. We also apply the approach to the expectation values of dimension 7 and 8 local operators and to a few other issues in the heavy quark expansion.

Charm CP Violation and the Electric Dipole Moments from the Charm Scale

The reported CP asymmetry in D->K^+K^- / pi^+pi^- is argued to be too large to naturally fit the SM. If so, a new source of CP violation is implied in the Delta C=1 sector with a milliweak strength. CP-odd interactions in the flavor-diagonal sector are strongly constrained by the EDMs placing severe limitations on the underlying theory. While the largest effects usually come from the New Physics energy scale, they are strongly model-dependent. Yet the interference of the CP-odd forces manifested in D decays with the conventional CP-even Delta C=1 weak interaction generates at the charm scale a background level. It has been argued that the d_n in the SM is largely generated via such an interference, with mild KM-specific additional suppression. The reported CP asymmetry is expected to generate d_n of 30 to 100 times larger than in the SM, or even higher in certain model yet not quite natural examples. In the SM the charm-induced loop-less |d_n| is expected around 10^{-31}e*cm. On the technical side, we present a compact Ward-identity--based derivation of the induced scalar pion-nucleon coupling in the presence of the CP-odd interactions, which appears once the latter include the right-handed light quarks.

Heavy-to-light baryonic form factors at large recoil

We analyze heavy-to-light baryonic form factors at large recoil and derive the scaling behavior of these form factors in the heavy quark limit. It is shown that only one universal form factor is needed to parameterize Lambda_b to p and Lambda_b to Lambda matrix elements in the large recoil limit of light baryons, while hadronic matrix elements of Lambda_b to Sigma transition vanish in the large energy limit of Sigma baryon due to the space-time parity symmetry. The scaling law of the soft form factor eta(P^{\prime} \cdot v), P^{\prime} and v being the momentum of nucleon and the velocity of Lambda_b baryon, responsible for Lambda_b to p transitions is also derived using the nucleon distribution amplitudes in leading conformal spin. In particular, we verify that this scaling behavior is in full agreement with that from light-cone sum rule approach in the heavy-quark limit. With these form factors, we further investigate the Lambda baryon polarization asymmetry alpha in Lambda_b to Lambda gamma and the forward-backward asymmetry A_{FB} in Lambda_b to Lambda l^{+} l^{-}. Both two observables (alpha and A_{FB}) are independent of hadronic form factors in leading power of 1/m_b and in leading order of alpha_s. We also extend the analysis of hadronic matrix elements for Omega_b to Omega transitions to rare Omega_b to Omega gamma and Omega_b to Omega l^{+} l^{-} decays and find that radiative Omega_b to Omega gamma decay is probably the most promising FCNC b to s radiative baryonic decay channel. In addition, it is interesting to notice that the zero-point of forward-backward asymmetry of Omega_b to Omega l^{+} l^{-} is the same as the one for Lambda_b to Lambda l^{+} l^{-} to leading order accuracy provided that the form factors \barζ_i (i=3, 4, 5) are numerically as small as indicated from the quark model.

Limits on New Physics from exclusive $B \to D^{(*)}\ell \barν$ Decays

We consider the exclusive decays $B \to D^{(*)}\,\ell \barν$ and study the effect of non $V-A$ structures on the observables. We extend the standard model hadronic current by additional right-handed vector as well as left- and right-handed scalar and tensor contributions and calculate the decay rates including the perturbative corrections up to order $α_s$. Using the data of the exclusive semileptonic $b \to c $ decays and recent calculations of the form factors at the non-recoil point we discuss the constraints to the wrong helicity admixtures in the hadronic current.

B -> D* at zero recoil revisited

We examine the B -> D* form factor at zero recoil using a continuum QCD approach rooted in the heavy quark sum rules framework. A refined evaluation of the radiative corrections as well as the most recent estimates of higher order power terms together with more careful continuum calculation are included. An upper bound on the form factor of F(1)< 0.93 is derived, based on just the positivity of inelastic contributions. A model-independent estimate of the inelastic contributions shows they are quite significant, lowering the form factor by about 6% or more. This results in an unbiased estimate F(1) \approx 0.86 with about three percent uncertainty in the central value.

Goldstone Bosons in Effective Theories with Spontaneously Broken Flavour Symmetry

The Flavour Symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) gauge sector is broken by the fermion Yukawa couplings. Promoting the Yukawa matrices to scalar spurion fields, one can break the flavour symmetry spontaneously by giving appropriate vacuum expectation values (VEVs) to the spurion fields, and one encounters Goldstone modes for every broken flavour symmetry generator. In this paper, we point out various aspects related to the possible dynamical interpretation of the Goldstone bosons: (i) In an effective-theory framework with local flavour symmetry, the Goldstone fields represent the longitudinal modes for massive gauge bosons. The spectrum of the latter follows the sequence of flavour-symmetry breaking related to the hierarchies in Yukawa couplings and flavour mixing angles. (ii) Gauge anomalies can be consistently treated by adding higher-dimensional operators. (iii) Leaving the U(1) factors of the flavour symmetry group as global symmetries, the respective Goldstone modes behave as axions which can be used to resolve the strong CP problem by a modified Peccei-Quinn mechanism. (iv) The dynamical picture of flavour symmetry breaking implies new sources of flavour-changing neutral currents, which arise from integrating out heavy scalar spurion fields and heavy gauge bosons. The coefficients of the effective operators follow the minimal-flavour violation principle.

Higher Order Power Corrections in Inclusive B Decays

We discuss order 1/m_b^4 and 1/m_b^5 corrections in inclusive semileptonic decay of a $B$ meson. We identify relevant hadronic matrix elements of dimension seven and eight and estimate them using the ground-state saturation approximation. Within this approach the effects on the integrated rate and on kinematic moments are estimated. The overall relative shift in V_{cb} turns out about +0.4% as applied to the existing fits. Similar estimates are presented for B -> X_s+γdecays.

Limit on a Right-Handed Admixture to the Weak $b \to c$ Current from Semileptonic Decays

We determine an upper bound for a possible right-handed $b{\to}c$ quark current admixture in semileptonic $\bar{B} \to X_{c} \ell^{-} \barν$ decays from a simulateous fit to moments of the lepton-enery and hadronic-mass distribution measured as a function of the lower limit on the lepton energy, using data measured by the \babar\ detector. The right-handed admixture is parametrized by a new parameter $c_R$ as coefficient of computed moments with right-handed quark current. For the standard model part we use the prediction of the heavy-quark expansion (HQE) up to order $1/m_b^3$ and perturbative corrections and for the right-handed contribution only up to order $1/m_b^2$ and perturbative corrections. We find $\cR=0.05\asympm{+0.33}{-0.50}$ in agreement with the standard-model prediction of zero. Additionally, we give a contraint on a possible right-handed admixture from exclusive decays, which is with a value of $\cR =0.01{\pm}0.03$ more restrictive than our value from the inclusive fit. The difference in \Vcb between the inclusive and exclusive extraction is only slightly reduced when allowing for a right-handed admixture in the range of $\cR=0.01 {\pm} 0.03$.

The Two Roads to "Intrinsic Charm" in B Decays

We describe two complementary ways to show the presence of higher order effects in the 1/m_Q expansion for inclusive B decays that have been dubbed "Intrinsic Charm". Apart from the lessons they can teach us about QCD's nonperturbative dynamics their consideration is relevant for precise extractions of |V_{cb}|: for they complement the estimate of the potential impact of 1/m_Q^4 contributions. We draw semiquantitative conclusions for the expected scale of Weak Annihilation in semileptonic B decays, both for its valence and non-valence components.

Gluonic Penguins in $B\toππ$ from QCD Light-Cone Sum Rules

The $B\to ππ$ hadronic matrix element of the chromomagnetic dipole operator $O_{8g}$ (gluonic penguin) is calculated using the QCD light-cone sum rule approach. The resulting sum rule for $<ππ|O_{8g}|B>$ contains, in addition to the $O(α_s)$ part induced by hard gluon exchanges, a contribution due to soft gluons. We find that in the limit $m_b\to \infty$ the soft-gluon contribution is suppressed as a second power of $1/m_b$ with respect to the leading-order factorizable $B\to ππ$ amplitude, whereas the hard-gluon contribution has only an $α_s$ suppression. Nevertheless, at finite $m_b$, soft and hard effects of the gluonic penguin in $B\to ππ$ are of the same order. Our result indicates that soft contributions are indispensable for an accurate counting of nonfactorizable effects in charmless B decays. On the phenomenological side we predict that the impact of gluonic penguins on $\bar{B}^0_d\to π^+π^-$ is very small, but is noticeable for $\bar{B}^0_d\to π^0π^0$.

Subleading Light-cone distributions functions in the decays Lambda(b) --> X(s) Gamma and Lambda(b) --> X(u) Lepton Anti-Nu

In this paper we investigate the subleading twist corrections to the photon energy spectrum in the decay Lambda_b -> X_s γand to the lepton energy spectrum in Lambda_b -> X_u l \barν. As a first step we rederive the matching coefficients of the subleading twist using a much simpler method. Parametrizing the matrix elements for Lambda_b and using reparametrization invariance, we show that the energy spectra close to the endpoints are given in terms of only a single universal function.

Parton--Hadron Duality in B Meson Decays

We summarize the current view on Parton-Hadron duality as it applies to B meson decays. It is emphasized that an OPE treatment is essential for properly formulating duality and its limitations. Duality violations are unlikely to become the limiting factor in describing semileptonic B width vis-a-vie higher order corrections. The consistent extraction of the b quark mass from B production and decays provides a striking example of the theoretical control achieved.

Subleading shape functions in B -> X_u l νand the determination of |Vub|

We calculate the subleading twist contributions to the endpoint of the inclusive lepton energy spectrum in B -> X_u l ν. We show that the same two subleading twist functions that appear in the decay B -> X_s γgovern the subleading effects in this decay. Using these results we find large O(Lambda/mB) corrections to the determination of |Vub| from the endpoint of the charged lepton spectrum. Using a simple model for the relevant subleading shape functions, we estimate the uncertainty in |Vub| from Lambda/mb corrections to be at the ~ 15% level for a lower lepton energy cut of 2.2 GeV.

CP Asymmetries in $b \to (s/d)$ Transitions as a Test of CKM CP Violation

We point out that a simple test of the mechanism of CP violation can be performed by a measurement of the CP asymmetries in exclusive and inclusive radiative rare decays. We show that the rate asymmetries $ΔΓ= Γ(B^- \to f γ) - Γ(B^+ \to \bar{f} γ)$} for certain final states $f$ can be predicted in a theoretically clean way. Some implications for $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays are discussed.

Direct CP Violation In Radiative B Decays

We discuss the role of the radiative B decays $B \to X_{s/d} γ$ in our search for new physics focusing on the issue of direct CP violation. We discuss in some detail a SM prediction for the CP asymmetries in inclusive $b \to s/d$ transitions, namely $\mid Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_s γ) + Δ{\cal B}(B \to X_d γ) \mid \sim 1 \cdot 10^{-9}$. Any measured value in significant deviation of this estimate would indicate new sources of CP violation beyond the CKM phase.

Exploring New Physics in the $B\to ϕK$ System

Employing the SU(2) isospin symmetry of strong interactions and estimates borrowed from effective field theory, we explore the impact of new physics on the decays $B^\pm\to ϕK^\pm$ and $B_d\to ϕK_S$ in a model-independent manner. To this end, we introduce - in addition to the usual mixing-induced CP asymmetry in $B_d\to ϕK_S$ - a set of three observables, which may not only provide smoking-gun signals for new-physics contributions to different isospin channels, but also valuable insights into hadron dynamics. Imposing dynamical hierarchies of amplitudes, we discuss various patterns of these observables, including also scenarios with small and large rescattering processes. Whereas the $B\toϕK$ system provides, in general, a powerful tool to search for indications of new physics, there is also an unfortunate case, where such effects cannot be distinguished from those of the Standard Model.

General Analysis of New Physics in $B\to J/ψK$

We present a model-independent parametrization of the $B^\pm\to J/ψK^\pm$, $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ decay amplitudes by taking into account the constraints that are implied by the isospin symmetry of strong interactions. Employing estimates borrowed from effective field theory, we explore the impact of physics beyond the Standard Model and introduce -- in addition to the usual mixing-induced CP asymmetry $A_{CP}^{mix}$ in $B_d\to J/ψK_S$ -- a set of three observables, allowing a general analysis of possible new-physics effects in the $B\to J/ψK$ system. Imposing a dynamical hierarchy of amplitudes, we argue that one of these observables may already be accessible at the first-generation $B$-factories, whereas the remaining ones will probably be left for second-generation $B$ experiments. However, in the presence of large rescattering effects, all three new-physics observables may be sizeable. We also emphasize that a small value of $A_{CP}^{mix}$ could be due to new-physics effects arising at the $B\to J/ψK$ decay-amplitude level. In order to establish such a scenario, the observables introduced in this paper play a key role.

Constraining the CKM angle $γ$ and penguin contributions through combined $B \to πK$ branching ratios

Motivated by recent CLEO measurements of $B\toπK$ modes, we investigate their implications for the CKM angle $γ$ and a consistent description of these decays within the Standard Model. Interestingly it turns out that already the measurement of the combined branching ratios $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$ and $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ allows to derive stringent constraints on $γ$ which are complementary to the presently allowed range for that angle. This range, arising from the usual fits of the unitarity triangle, is typically symmetric around $γ= 90^\circ$, while our method can in principle exclude a range of this kind. Consistency within the Standard Model implies furthermore bounds on the ratio $r\equiv|T'|/|\tilde P|$ of the current-current and penguin operator contributions to $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$, and upper limits for the CP-violating asymmetry arising in that decay. Commonly accepted means to estimate $r$ yield values at the edge of compatibility with the present CLEO measurements.

Higher Order $1/m$ Corrections at Zero Recoil

The general structure of the $1/m$ corrections at zero recoil is studied. The relevant matrix elements are forward matrix elements of local higher dimensional operators and their time ordered products with higher order terms from the Lagrangian. These matrix elements may be classified in a simple way and the analysis at the non recoil point for the form factor of heavy quark currents simplifies drastically. The second order recoil corrections to the form factor $h_{A1}$ of the axial vector current, relevant for the $|V_{cb}|$ determination from $B \to D^*$ decays, are estimated to be $-5\% < h_{A1} - 1 < 0$.

Wopper, Version 1.1: A Monte Carlo Event Generator for Four Fermion Production at LEP-II and Beyond

We report on the status of the Monte Carlo event generator WOPPER. Version 1.1 of WOPPER describes four fermion production at LEP-II and beyond with leading logarithmic radiative corrections in the double W pole approximation. These approximations are appropriate for almost all practical purposes, but the inclusion of these finite width effects and radiative corrections is nevertheless indispensable for LEP-II physics.
