Additional Information on Heavy Quark Parameters from Charged Lepton Forward-Backward Asymmetry

The determination of $|V_{cb}|$ using inclusive and exclusive (semi-)leptonic decays exhibits a long-standing tension of varying ${\cal O}(3 σ)$ significance. For the inclusive determination the decay rate is expanded in $1/m_b$ using heavy quark expansion, and from moments of physical observables the higher order heavy quark parameters are extracted from experimental data in order to assess $|V_{cb}|$ from the normalisation. The drawbacks are high correlations both theoretically as well as experimentally among these observables. We will scrutinise the inclusive determination in order to add a new and less correlated observable. This observable is related to the decay angle of the charged lepton and can help to constrain the important heavy quark parameters in a new way. It may validate the current seemingly stable extraction of $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive decays or hints to possible issues, and even may be sensitive to New Physics operators.

Taming the higher power corrections in semileptonic B decays

We study the effect of dimension 7 and 8 operators on inclusive semileptonic B decays and the extraction of |Vcb|. Using moments of semileptonic B decay spectra and information based on the Lowest-Lying State saturation Approximation (LLSA) we perform a global fit of the nonperturbative parameters of the heavy quark expansion including for the first time the O(1/mb^{4,5}) contributions. Higher power corrections appear to have a very small effect on the extraction of |Vcb|, independently of the weight we attribute to the LLSA.

Angular Analysis of New Physics Operators in polarized $τ\to 3 \ell$ Decays

In a bottom-up approach we investigate lepton-flavour violating processes $τ\to 3 \ell$ that are mediated by New Physics encoded in effective-theory operators of dimension six. While the opportunity to scrutinize the underlying operator structure has been investigated before, we explore the benefits of utilising the polarization direction of the initial $τ$ lepton and the angular distribution of the decay. Given the rarity of these events (if observed at all), we focus on integrated observables rather than spectra, such as partial rates and asymmetries. In an effort to estimate the number of events required to extract the coupling coefficients to the effective operators we perform a phenomenological study with virtual experiments.

New ways to search for right-handed current in B -> rho ell nu decay

An interesting possibility to ease the tension between various determinations of |V_{ub}| is to allow a small right-handed contribution to the standard model weak current. The present bounds on such a contribution are fairly weak. We propose new ways to search for such a beyond standard model contribution in semileptonic B -> rho ell nu decay. Generalized asymmetries in one, two, or three angular variables are introduced as discriminators, which do not require an unbinned analysis of the fully differential distribution, and a detailed study of the corresponding theoretical uncertainties is performed. A discussion on how binned measurements can access all the angular information follows, which may be useful in both B -> rho ell nu and B -> K^* ell^+ ell^-, and possibly essential in the former decay due to backgrounds. The achievable sensitivity from the available BaBar and Belle data sets is explored, as well as from the anticipated 50 ab^{-1} Belle II data.

Non-cancellation of electroweak logarithms in high-energy scattering

We study electroweak Sudakov corrections in high energy scattering, and the cancellation between real and virtual Sudakov corrections. Numerical results are given for the case of heavy quark production by gluon collisions involving the rates $gg \to t \bar t, b \bar b, t \bar b W, t \bar t Z, b \bar b Z, t \bar t H, b \bar b H$. Gauge boson virtual corrections are related to real transverse gauge boson emission, and Higgs virtual corrections to Higgs and longitudinal gauge boson emission. At the LHC, electroweak corrections become important in the TeV regime. At the proposed 100 TeV collider, electroweak interactions enter a new regime, where the corrections are very large and need to be resummed.

A proposal to solve some puzzles in semileptonic B decays

Some long-standing problems in the experimental data for semileptonic b -> c l nu decay rates have resisted attempts to resolve them, despite substantial efforts. We summarize the issues, and propose a possible resolution, which may alleviate several of these tensions simultaneously, including the "1/2 vs. 3/2 puzzle" and the composition of the inclusive decay rate in terms of exclusive channels.

Constraining CP violation in neutral meson mixing with theory input

There has been a lot of recent interest in the experimental hints of CP violation in B_{d,s}^0 mixing, which would be a clear signal of beyond the standard model physics (with higher significance). We derive a new relation for the mixing parameters, which allows clearer interpretation of the data in models in which new physics enters in M_12 and/or Γ_12. Our results imply that the central value of the DØ measurement of the semileptonic CP asymmetry in B_{d,s}^0 decay is not only in conflict with the standard model, but in a stronger tension with data on ΔΓ_s than previously appreciated. This result can be used to improve the constraint on ΔΓor A_SL, whichever is less precisely measured.

Limits on New Physics from exclusive $B \to D^{(*)}\ell \barν$ Decays

We consider the exclusive decays $B \to D^{(*)}\,\ell \barν$ and study the effect of non $V-A$ structures on the observables. We extend the standard model hadronic current by additional right-handed vector as well as left- and right-handed scalar and tensor contributions and calculate the decay rates including the perturbative corrections up to order $α_s$. Using the data of the exclusive semileptonic $b \to c $ decays and recent calculations of the form factors at the non-recoil point we discuss the constraints to the wrong helicity admixtures in the hadronic current.

Higher Order Power Corrections in Inclusive B Decays

We discuss order 1/m_b^4 and 1/m_b^5 corrections in inclusive semileptonic decay of a $B$ meson. We identify relevant hadronic matrix elements of dimension seven and eight and estimate them using the ground-state saturation approximation. Within this approach the effects on the integrated rate and on kinematic moments are estimated. The overall relative shift in V_{cb} turns out about +0.4% as applied to the existing fits. Similar estimates are presented for B -> X_s+γdecays.

The Two Roads to "Intrinsic Charm" in B Decays

We describe two complementary ways to show the presence of higher order effects in the 1/m_Q expansion for inclusive B decays that have been dubbed "Intrinsic Charm". Apart from the lessons they can teach us about QCD's nonperturbative dynamics their consideration is relevant for precise extractions of |V_{cb}|: for they complement the estimate of the potential impact of 1/m_Q^4 contributions. We draw semiquantitative conclusions for the expected scale of Weak Annihilation in semileptonic B decays, both for its valence and non-valence components.

Model-independent analysis of Tau -> lll' decays

Many models for physics beyond the Standard Model predict lepton-flavour violating decays of charged leptons at a level which may become observable very soon. We investigate the decays of a Tau-lepton into three charged leptons (Tau -> lll', l(') = e,μin a generic way. Using effective-field-theory methods, the relevant operators are classified according to their chirality structure. For each case, we work out the Dalitz plots for the decay distributions, including interference terms which arise from four-lepton operators and radiatively induced processes. We discuss phenomenological implications, in particular the potential to distinguish different new physics models.
