Effect of Scheme Transformations on a Beta Function with Vanishing One-Loop Term

It is commonly stated that because terms in the beta function of a theory at the level of $\ell \ge 3$ loops and higher are scheme-dependent, it is possible to define scheme transformations that can be used to remove these terms, at least in the vicinity of zero coupling. We prove that this is not, in general, possible in the situation where a beta function is not identically zero but has a vanishing one-loop term.

Properties of the $ε$-Expansion, Lagrange Inversion and Associahedra and the $O(1)$ Model

We discuss properties of the $ε$-expansion in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. Using Lagrange inversion we write down an exact expression for the value of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point coupling order by order in $ε$ in terms of the beta function coefficients. The $ε$-expansion is combinatoric in the sense that the Wilson-Fisher fixed point coupling at each order depends on the beta function coefficients via Bell polynomials. Using certain properties of Lagrange inversion we then argue that the $ε$-expansion of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point coupling equally well can be viewed as a geometric expansion which is controlled by the facial structure of associahedra. We then write down an exact expression for the value of anomalous dimensions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point order by order in $ε$ in terms of the coefficients of the beta function and anomalous dimensions. We finally use our general results to compute the values for the Wilson-fisher fixed point coupling and critical exponents for the scalar $O(1)$ symmetric model to $O(ε^7)$.

Renormalization-Group Behavior of $ϕ^3$ Theories in $d=6$ Dimensions

We investigate possible renormalization-group fixed points at nonzero coupling in $ϕ^3$ theories in six spacetime dimensions, using beta functions calculated to the four-loop level. We analyze three theories of this type, with (a) a one-component scalar, (b) a scalar transforming as the fundamental representation of a global ${\rm SU}(N)$ symmetry group, and (c) a scalar transforming as a bi-adjoint representation of a global ${\rm SU}(N) \otimes {\rm SU}(N)$ symmetry. We do not find robust evidence for such fixed points in theories (a) or (b). Theory (c) has the special feature that the one-loop term in the beta function is zero; implications of this are discussed.

Scheme-Independent Series for Anomalous Dimensions of Higher-Spin Operators at an Infrared Fixed Point in a Gauge Theory

We consider an asymptotically free vectorial gauge theory, with gauge group $G$ and $N_f$ fermions in a representation $R$ of $G$, having an infrared fixed point of the renormalization group. We calculate scheme-independent series expansions for the anomalous dimensions of higher-spin bilinear fermion operators at this infrared fixed point up to $O(Δ_f^3)$, where $Δ_f$ is an $N_f$-dependent expansion variable. Our general results are evaluated for several special cases, including the case $G={\rm SU}(N_c)$ with $R$ equal to the fundamental and adjoint representations.

Consistent Perturbative Fixed Point Calculations in QCD and SQCD

We suggest how to consistently calculate the anomalous dimension $γ_*$ of the $\barψψ$ operator in finite order perturbation theory at an infrared fixed point for asymptotically free theories. If the $n+1$ loop beta function and $n$ loop anomalous dimension are known then $γ_*$ can be calculated exactly and fully scheme independently through $O(Δ_f^n )$ where $Δ_f = \bar{N_f} - N_f$ and $N_f$ is the number of flavors and $\bar{N}_f$ is the number of flavors above which asymptotic freedom is lost. For a supersymmetric theory the calculation preserves supersymmetry order by order in $Δ_f$. We then compute $γ_*$ through $O(Δ_f^2)$ for supersymmetric QCD in the $\overline{\text{DR}}$ scheme and find that it matches the exact known result. We find that $γ_*$ is astonishingly well described in perturbation theory already at the few loops level throughout the entire conformal window. We finally compute $γ_*$ through $O(Δ_f^3)$ for QCD and a variety of other non-supersymmetric fermionic gauge theories. Small values of $γ_*$ are observed for a large range of flavors.

Infrared Zero of $β$ and Value of $γ_m$ for an SU(3) Gauge Theory at the Five-Loop Level

We calculate the value of the coupling at the infrared zero of the beta function of an asymptotically free SU(3) gauge theory at the five-loop level as a function of the number of fermions. Both a direct analysis of the beta function and analyses of Padé approximants are used for this purpose. We then calculate the value of the five-loop anomalous dimension, $γ_m$, of the fermion bilinear at this IR zero of the beta function.

Quantum Critical Behaviour of Semi-Simple Gauge Theories

We study the perturbative phase diagram of semi-simple fermionic gauge theories resembling the Standard Model. We investigate an $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $M$ Dirac flavors where we gauge first an $SU(M)_L$ and then an $SU(2)_L \subset SU(M)_L$ of the original global symmetry $SU(M)_L\times SU(M)_R \times U(1) $ of the theory. To avoid gauge anomalies we add lepton-like particles. At the two-loops level an intriguing phase diagram appears. We uncover phases in which one, two or three fixed points exist and discuss the associated flows of the coupling constants. We discover a phase featuring complete asymptotic freedom and simultaneously an interacting infrared fixed point in both couplings. The analysis further reveals special renormalisation group trajectories along which one coupling displays asymptotic freedom and the other asymptotic safety, while both flowing in the infrared to an interacting fixed point. These are \emph{safety free} trajectories. We briefly sketch out possible phenomenological implications, among which an independent way to generate near-conformal dynamics a lá walking is investigated.

Scheme-Independent Calculation of $γ_{\barψψ,IR}$ for an SU(3) Gauge Theory

We present a scheme-independent calculation of the infrared value of the anomalous dimension of the fermion bilinear, $γ_{\barψψ,IR}$ in an SU(3) gauge theory as a function of the number of fermions, $N_f$, via a series expansion in powers of $Δ_f$, where $Δ_f=(16.5-N_f)$, to order $Δ_f^4$. We perform an extrapolation to obtain the first determination of the exact $γ_{\barψψ,IR}$ from continuum field theory. The results are compared with calculations of the $n$-loop values of this anomalous dimension from series in powers of the coupling and from lattice measurements.

Nonperturbative results for two-index conformal windows

Via large and small $N_c$ relations we derive nonperturbative results about the conformal window of two-index theories. Using Schwinger-Dyson methods as well as four-loops results we estimate subleading corrections and show that naive large number of colors extrapolations are unreliable when $N_c$ is less than about six. Nevertheless useful nonperturbative inequalities for the size of the conformal windows, for any number of colors, can be derived. By further observing that the adjoint conformal window is independent of the number of colors we argue, among other things, that: The large $N_c$ two-index conformal window is twice the conformal window of the adjoint representation (which can be determined at small $N_c$) expressed in terms of Dirac fermions; Lattice results for adjoint matter can be used to provide independent information on the conformal dynamics of two-index theories such as SU($N_c$) with two and four symmetric Dirac flavors.

(Pseudo)Real Vacua

We study the alignment of the vacuum in fermionic gauge theories with enhanced global symmetries by adding a small explicit mass term. Specifically we center our investigations around the theories with two Dirac fermions in a real or pseudoreal representation of the gauge group. We find that as we vary the explicit fermion masses $m_U$ and $m_D$ there are critical points where the system makes a discontinuous jump from one vacuum to another. This occurs when one of the fermion masses vanish. Hence there are four unique vacua depending only on the sign of $m_U$ and $m_D$. Due to the enhanced global symmetry nothing is therefore expected to happen at the point $m_U=-m_D$ where, on the other hand, theories with fermions in a complex representation of the gauge group are expected to develop a CP violating (Dashen) phase.

Conformal Behavior at Four Loops and Scheme (In)Dependence

We search for infrared zeros of the beta function and evaluate the anomalous dimension of the mass at the associated fixed point for asymptotically free vector-like fermionic gauge theories with gauge group SU(N). The fixed points of the beta function are studied at the two, three and four loop level in two different explicit schemes. These are the modified regularization invariant, RI', scheme and the minimal momentum subtraction, mMOM, scheme. The search is performed in Landau gauge where the beta function of the gauge parameter vanishes. We then compare our findings to earlier identical investigations performed in the modified minimal subtraction, $\bar{\text{MS}}$, scheme. It is found that the value of the anomalous dimension of the mass is smaller at three and four loops than at two loops. This seems to be a generic pattern that is observed in all three different schemes. We then estimate the value of the anomalous dimension to be $γ\sim 0.225-0.375$ for twelve fundamental flavors and three colors, $γ\sim 0.500 - 0.593$ for two adjoint flavors and two colors and finally $γ\sim 1.12-1.70$ for two two-indexed flavors and three colors with the lower and upper bound set by the minimum and maximum value respectively over all three schemes and at three and four loops. Our analysis suggests that the former two theories lie in the conformal window while the latter belongs to the chirally broken phase.

Infrared Fixed Points in the minimal MOM Scheme

We analyze the behavior of several renormalization group functions at infrared fixed points for $SU(N)$ gauge theories with fermions in the fundamental and two-indexed representations. This includes the beta function of the gauge coupling, the anomalous dimension of the gauge parameter and the anomalous dimension of the mass. The scheme in which the analysis is performed is the minimal momentum subtraction scheme through third loop order. Due to the fact that scheme dependence is inevitable once the perturbation theory is truncated we compare to previous identical studies done in the minimal subtraction scheme and the modified regularization invariant scheme. We find only mild to moderate scheme dependence.

Vacuum Alignment with more Flavors

We study the alignment of the vacuum in gauge theories with $N_f$ Dirac fermions transforming according to a complex representation of the gauge group. The alignment of the vacuum is produced by adding a small mass perturbation to the theory. We study in detail the $N_f=2,3$ and $4$ case. For $N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$ we reproduce earlier known results including the Dashen phase with spontaneous violation of the combined charge conjugation and parity symmetry, CP. For $N_f=4$ we find regions with and without spontaneous CP violation. We then generalize to an arbitrary number of flavors. Here it is shown that at the point where $N_f-1$ flavors are degenerate with positive mass $m>0$ and the mass of the $N_f$'th flavor becomes negative and equal to $-m$ CP breaks spontaneously.

Higher Loop Corrections to the Infrared Evolution of Fermionic Gauge Theories in the RI' Scheme

We study the evolution of the gauge coupling and the anomalous dimension of the mass towards an infrared fixed point for non-supersymmetric gauge theories in the modified regularization invariant, RI', scheme. This is done at the three loop level where all the renormalization group functions have been calculated explicitly. The purpose is to assess the scheme dependence of earlier and similar investigations performed at three and four loop order in the modified minimal subtraction, $\bar{\text{MS}}$, scheme. Our results are of the same order when compared to the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme.

An Analysis of Scheme Transformations in the Vicinity of an Infrared Fixed Point

We give a detailed analysis of the effects of scheme transformations in the vicinity of an exact or approximate infrared fixed point in an asymptotically free gauge theory with fermions. We list necessary conditions that such transformations must obey and show that, although these can easily be satisfied in the vicinity of an ultraviolet fixed point, they constitute significant restrictions on scheme transformations at an infrared fixed point. We construct acceptable scheme transformations and use these to study the scheme-dependence of an infrared fixed point, making comparison with our previous three-loop and four-loop calculations of the location of this point in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. We also use an illustrative hypothetical exact $β$ function to investigate how accurately analyses of finite-order series expansions probe an infrared fixed point and the effect of a scheme transformation on these. Some implications of our work are discussed.

Comparison of Some Exact and Perturbative Results for a Supersymmetric SU($N_c$) Gauge Theory

We consider vectorial, asymptotically free ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric SU($N_c$) gauge theories with $N_f$ copies of massless chiral super fields in various representations and study how perturbative predictions for the lower boundary of the infrared conformal phase, as a function of $N_f$, compare with exact results. We make use of two-loop and three-loop calculations of the beta function and anomalous dimension of the quadratic chiral super field operator product for this purpose. The specific chiral superfield contents that we consider are $N_f$ copies of (i) $F+\bar F$, (ii) $Adj$, (iii) $S_2+\bar S_2$, and (iv) $A_2 + \bar A_2$, where $F$, $Adj$, $S_2$, and $A_2$ denote, respectively, the fundamental, adjoint, and symmetric and antisymmetric rank-2 tensor representations. We find that perturbative results slightly overestimate the value of $N_{f,cr}$ relative to the respective exact results for these representations, i.e., slightly underestimate the interval in $N_f$ for which the theory has infrared conformal behavior. Our results provide a measure of how closely perturbative calculations reproduce exact results for these theories.

Exceptional and Spinorial Conformal Windows

We study the conformal window of gauge theories containing fermionic matter fields, where the gauge group is any of the exceptional groups with the fermions transforming according to the fundamental and adjoint representations and the orthogonal groups where the fermions transform according to a spinorial representation. We investigate the phase diagram using a purely perturbative four loop analysis, the all-orders beta function and the ladder approximation.

Scheme Transformations in the Vicinity of an Infrared Fixed Point

We analyze the effect of scheme transformations in the vicinity of an exact or approximate infrared fixed point in an asymptotically free gauge theory with fermions. We show that there is far less freedom in carrying out such scheme transformations in this case than at an ultraviolet fixed point. We construct a transformation from the $\bar{MS}$ scheme to a scheme with a vanishing three-loop term in the $β$ function and use this to assess the scheme dependence of an infrared fixed point in SU($N$) theories with fermions. Implications for the anomalous dimension of the fermion bilinear operator are also discussed.

Higher-Loop Corrections to the Infrared Evolution of a Gauge Theory with Fermions

We consider a vectorial, asymptotically free gauge theory and analyze the effect of higher-loop corrections to the beta function on the evolution of the theory from the ultraviolet to the infrared. We study the case in which the theory contains $N_f$ copies of a fermion transforming according to the fundamental representation and several higher-dimensional representations of the gauge group. We also calculate higher-loop values of the anomalous dimension of the mass, $γ_m$ of $\barψψ$ at the infrared zero of the beta function. We find that for a given theory, the values of $γ_m$ calculated to three- and four-loop order, and evaluated at the infrared zero computed to the same order, tend to be somewhat smaller than the value calculated to two-loop order. The results are compared with recent lattice simulations.

Technicolor Models with Color-Singlet Technifermions and their Ultraviolet Extensions

We study technicolor models in which all of the technifermions are color-singlets, focusing on the case in these fermions transform according to the fundamental representation of the technicolor gauge group. Our analysis includes a derivation of restrictions on the weak hypercharge assignments for the technifermions and additional color-singlet, technisinglet fermions arising from the necessity of avoiding stable bound states with exotic electric charges. Precision electroweak constraints on these models are also discussed. We determine some general properties of extended technicolor theories containing these technicolor sectors.

Generational Structure of Models with Dynamical Symmetry Breaking

In models with dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, this breaking is normally communicated to quarks and leptons by a set of vector bosons with masses generated via sequential breaking of a larger gauge symmetry. In reasonably ultraviolet-complete theories of this type, the number of stages of breaking of the larger gauge symmetry is usually equal to the observed number of quark and lepton generations, $N_{gen.}=3$. Here we investigate the general question of how the construction and properties of these models depend on $N_{gen.}$, regarded as a variable. We build and analyze models with illustrative values of $N_{gen.}$ different from 3 (namely, $N_{gen.}=1,2,4$) that exhibit the necessary sequential symmetry breaking down to a strongly coupled sector that dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry. Our results for variable $N_{gen.}$ show that one can robustly obtain, for this latter sector, a theory with a gauge coupling that is large but slowly running, controlled by an approximate infrared fixed point of the renormalization group. Owing to this, we find that for all of the values of $N_{gen.}$ considered, standard-model fermions of the highest generation have masses that can be comparable to the electroweak-symmetry breaking scale. We also study the interplay of multiple strongly coupled gauge symmetries in these models.

Infrared Evolution and Phase Structure of a Gauge Theory Containing Different Fermion Representations

We study the evolution of an asymptotically free vectorial SU($N$) gauge theory from the ultraviolet to the infrared and the resultant phase structure in the general case in which the theory contains fermions transforming according to several different representations of the gauge group. We discuss the sequential fermion condensation and dynamical mass generation that occur, and comment on the effect of bare fermion mass terms.

Patterns of Dynamical Gauge Symmetry Breaking

We construct and analyze theories with a gauge symmetry in the ultraviolet of the form $G \otimes G_b$, in which the vectorial, asymptotically free $G_b$ gauge interaction becomes strongly coupled at a scale where the $G$ interaction is weakly coupled and produces bilinear fermion condensates that dynamically break the $G$ symmetry. Comparisons are given between Higgs and dynamical symmetry breaking mechanisms for various models.

Study of an Alternate Mechanism for the Origin of Fermion Generations

In usual extended technicolor (ETC) theories based on the group ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$, the quarks of charge 2/3 and -1/3 and the charged leptons of all generations arise from ETC fermion multiplets transforming according to the fundamental representation. Here we investigate a different idea for the origin of SM fermion generations, in which quarks and charged leptons of different generations arise from ETC fermions transforming according to different representations of ${\rm{SU}(N_{ETC}})_{ETC}$. Although this mechanism would have the potential, {\it a priori}, to allow a reduction in the value of $N_{ETC}$ relative to conventional ETC models, we show that, at least in simple models, it is excluded by the fact that the technicolor sector is not asymptotically free or by the appearance of fermions with exotic quantum numbers which are not observed.

Ultraviolet Extension of a Model with Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking by Both Top-Quark and Technifermion Condensates

We construct and analyze an ultraviolet extension of a model in which electroweak symmetry breaking is due to both technifermion and top-quark condensates. The model includes dynamical mechanisms for all of the various gauge symmetry breakings. We discuss certain aspects in which it requires additional ingredients to be more realistic.
