Update on $SU(2)$ with one adjoint Dirac flavor

We present an update of our ongoing study of the SU(2) gauge theory with one flavor of Dirac fermion in the adjoint representation. Compared to our previous results we now have data at larger lattice volumes, smaller values of the fermion mass, and also larger values of $β$. We present data for the spectrum of mesons, baryons, glueballs, and the hybrid fermion-glue state, as well as new estimates of the mass anomalous dimension from both finite-size hyperscaling and the Dirac mode number, and discuss the implications of these data for the presence or otherwise of chiral symmetry breaking in this theory.

Confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model -- A signature of M-theory?

We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter region of the phase transition between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. A detailed study of M-theory via lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the D0-brane matrix model might be doable with much smaller computational resources than previously expected.

Investigating the conformal behaviour of SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavor

We present a major update on our investigations of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation on the lattice. In particular we consider larger volumes, as well as four different values of the gauge coupling. We provide results for the spectrum including gluonic, fermionic, and hybrid observables, Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number. These data confirm that the theory is close to the lower boundary of the conformal window for adjoint fermions. Our investigations provide important insights regarding the realization of different infrared scenarios that have been conjectured for this theory.

Perturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in lattice ${\cal N}{=}1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

In this work we perform a perturbative study of the Noether supercurrent operator in the context of Supersymmetric ${\cal N}{=}1$ Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. The supercurrent mixes with several other operators, some of which are not gauge invariant, having the same quantum numbers. We determine, to one loop order, the renormalization and all corresponding mixing coefficients by computing relevant Green's functions of each one of the mixing operators with external elementary fields. Our calculations are performed both in dimensional and lattice regularization. From the first regularization we obtain the $\bar{MS}$-renormalized Green's functions; comparison of the latter with the corresponding Green's functions in the lattice regularization leads to the extraction of the lattice renormalization factors and mixing coefficients in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The lattice calculations are performed to lowest order in the lattice spacing, using Wilson gluons and clover improved gluinos. The lattice results can be used in nonperturbative studies of supersymmetric Ward identities.

Pion-pole contribution to HLbL from twisted mass lattice QCD at the physical point

We report on our computation of the pion transition form factor ${\cal F}_{P\rightarrow γ^*γ^*}$ from twisted mass lattice QCD in order to determine the numerically dominant light pseudoscalar pole contribution in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ=(g-2)_μ$. The pion transition form factor is computed directly at the physical point. We present first results for our estimate of the pion-pole contribution with kinematic setup for the pion at rest.

The spectrum and mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) adjoint QCD with two Dirac flavours

In this work we present the results of our investigation of \su{2} gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation (aQCD2), which belongs to the class of strongly interacting gauge theories that are of basic interest for extensions of the Standard Model. We have done numerical lattice simulations of this theory at two different values of the gauge coupling and several fermion masses. Our results include the particle spectrum and the mass anomalous dimension. The spectrum contains new exotic fermion-gluon states and flavour-singlet mesons. The mass anomalous dimension is determined from the scaling of the masses and the mode number. The remnant dependence of the universal mass ratios and mass anomalous dimension on the gauge coupling indicates the relevance of scaling corrections, such that earlier estimations for the universal fixed point value of the mass anomalous dimension are incomplete without their inclusion.

Partial Deconfinement at Strong Coupling on the Lattice

We provide evidence for partial deconfinement -- the deconfinement of a SU($M$) subgroup of the SU($N$) gauge group -- by using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We take matrix models as concrete examples. By appropriately fixing the gauge, we observe that the $M\times M$ submatrices deconfine. This gives direct evidence for partial deconfinement at strong coupling. We discuss the applications to QCD and holography.

Continuum extrapolation of Ward identities in $\mathbf{\mathcal{N}=1}$ supersymmetric SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

In $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, regularised on a space-time lattice, in addition to the breaking by the gluino mass term, supersymmetry is broken explicitly by the lattice regulator. In addition to the parameter tuning in the theory, the supersymmetric Ward identities can be used as a tool to investigate lattice artefacts as well as to check whether supersymmetry can be recovered in the chiral and continuum limits. In this paper we present the numerical results of an analysis of the supersymmetric Ward identities for our available gauge ensembles at different values of the inverse gauge coupling $β$ and of the hopping parameter $κ$. The results clearly indicate that the lattice artefacts vanish in the continuum limit, confirming the restoration of supersymmetry.

Continuum limit of SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and supersymmetric gauge theories on the lattice

We summarize our investigations of several aspects of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We present our final results for SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM simulated with Wilson fermions. We also discuss the first test of the simulations of the theory with overlap gluinos. Finally, we present some recent progresses concerning the phase structure of the compactified theory on $R^3\times S^1$.

Lattice simulations of a gauge theory with mixed adjoint-fundamental matter

In this article we summarize our efforts in simulating Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter fields transforming under the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group. In the context of composite Higgs scenarios, gauge theories with mixed representation fields have been suggested to describe the fundamental interactions well beyond the electroweak unification scale, and they are also closely related to supersymmetric QCD. In addition, they are studied as deformations of theories with pure adjoint matter in the context of adiabatic continuity. We provide some first results for bare parameter tuning and interdependence of the two representations. We also investigate how the chiral symmetry breaking or a conformal scenario can be realized and checked in such theories.

Quark masses and decay constants in $N_f=2+1+1$ isoQCD with Wilson clover twisted mass fermions

We present a preliminary study of the pion, kaon and D-meson masses and decay constants in isosymmetric QCD, as well as a preliminary result for the light-quark renormalized mass. The analysis is based on the gauge ensembles produced by ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted mass quarks, spanning a range of lattice spacings from $\sim0.10$ to $0.07$ fm and include configurations at the physical pion point on lattices with linear size up to $L~\sim~5.6$~fm

Thermal phase transition in Yang-Mills matrix model

We study the bosonic matrix model obtained as the high-temperature limit of two-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SU($N$) Yang-Mills theory. So far, no consensus about the order of the deconfinement transition in this theory has been reached and this hinders progress in understanding the nature of the black hole/black string topology change from the gauge/gravity duality perspective. On the one hand, previous works considered the deconfinement transition consistent with two transitions which are of second and third order. On the other hand, evidence for a first order transition was put forward more recently. We perform high-statistics lattice Monte Carlo simulations at large $N$ and small lattice spacing to establish that the transition is really of first order. Our findings flag a warning that the required large-$N$ and continuum limit might not have been reached in earlier publications, and that was the source of the discrepancy. Moreover, our detailed results confirm the existence of a new partially deconfined phase which describes non-uniform black strings via the gauge/gravity duality. This phase exhibits universal features already predicted in quantum field theory.

A local fermion update algorithm for SYM quantum mechanics

We present a local fermion update algorithm for N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics which allows simulations in fixed canonical sectors. We discuss some aspects of the physics of this theory, including the appearance of flat directions in the bosonic potential and the metastabilities related to those. In particular, we show that the modulus of the bosonic fields diverges in some of the fermion sectors and for thermal boundary conditions.

Large mass hierarchies from strongly-coupled dynamics

Besides the Higgs particle discovered in 2012, with mass 125 GeV, recent LHC data show tentative signals for new resonances in diboson as well as diphoton searches at high center-of-mass energies (2 TeV and 750 GeV, respectively). If these signals are confirmed (or other new resonances are discovered at the TeV scale), the large hierarchies between masses of new bosons require a dynamical explanation. Motivated by these tentative signals of new physics, we investigate the theoretical possibility that large hierarchies in the masses of glueballs could arise dynamically in new strongly-coupled gauge theories extending the standard model of particle physics. We study lattice data on non-Abelian gauge theories in the (near-)conformal regime as well as a simple toy model in the context of gauge/gravity dualities. We focus our attention on the ratio $R$ between the mass of the lightest spin-2 and spin-0 resonances, that for technical reasons is a particularly convenient and clean observable to study. For models in which (non-perturbative) large anomalous dimensions arise dynamically, we show indications that this mass ratio can be large, with $R>5$. Moreover, our results suggest that $R$ might be related to universal properties of the IR fixed point. Our findings provide an interesting step towards understanding large mass ratios in the non-perturbative regime of quantum field theories with (near) IR conformal behaviour.

Canonical simulations of supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics

The fermion loop formulation naturally separates partition functions into their canonical sectors. Here we discuss various strategies to make use of this for supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics obtained from dimensional reduction in various dimensions and present numerical results for the separate canonical sectors with fixed fermion numbers. We comment on potential problems due to the sign of the contributions from the fermions and due to flat directions.

Lattice simulations of technicolour theories with adjoint fermions and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Theories with fermions in the adjoint representation have several interesting applications in extensions of the standard model. The conformal window for these theories is of particular interest for technicolour extensions. We present here our newest results for the spectrum of $N_f=2$ adjoint QCD and compare them with the predictions for a conformal behaviour. The comparison with supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, investigated with the same methods, will help to distinguish more clearly the conformal and the confining scenario. The spectrum includes additional fermionic states that are not present in QCD. We provide results for the mass of these states and discuss their phenomenological relevance. In addition we have done preliminary investigations of the singlet scalar meson state.

Nonperturbative results for two-index conformal windows

Via large and small $N_c$ relations we derive nonperturbative results about the conformal window of two-index theories. Using Schwinger-Dyson methods as well as four-loops results we estimate subleading corrections and show that naive large number of colors extrapolations are unreliable when $N_c$ is less than about six. Nevertheless useful nonperturbative inequalities for the size of the conformal windows, for any number of colors, can be derived. By further observing that the adjoint conformal window is independent of the number of colors we argue, among other things, that: The large $N_c$ two-index conformal window is twice the conformal window of the adjoint representation (which can be determined at small $N_c$) expressed in terms of Dirac fermions; Lattice results for adjoint matter can be used to provide independent information on the conformal dynamics of two-index theories such as SU($N_c$) with two and four symmetric Dirac flavors.

Numerical corrections to the strong coupling effective Polyakov-line action for finite T Yang-Mills theory

We consider a three-dimensional effective theory of Polyakov lines derived previously from lattice Yang-Mills theory and QCD by means of a resummed strong coupling expansion. The effective theory is useful for investigations of the phase structure, with a sign problem mild enough to allow simulations also at finite density. In this work we present a numerical method to determine improved values for the effective couplings directly from correlators of the 4d Yang-Mills theory. For values of the gauge coupling up to the vicinity of the phase transition, the dominant short range effective coupling are well described by their corresponding strong coupling series. We provide numerical results also for the longer range interactions, Polyakov lines in higher representations as well as four-point interactions, and discuss the growing significance of non-local contributions as the lattice gets finer. Within this approach the critical Yang-Mills coupling $β_c$ is reproduced to better than one percent from a one-coupling effective theory on $N_τ=4$ lattices while up to five couplings are needed on $N_τ=8$ for the same accuracy.

Recent results from SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac fermion

We present some results for SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavour from lattice studies. Data for the spectroscopy, the static potential, topological charge, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate are included. Our findings are found to be in- consistent with conventional confining behaviour, instead pointing tentatively towards a theory lying within or very near the onset of the conformal window, with an anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate of almost 1. Implications of these findings on the building of models of strongly-interacting dynamics beyond the standard model are discussed.

The light bound states of supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these particles have to be arranged in supermultiplets of equal masses. In lattice simulations supersymmetry can only be recovered in the continuum limit since it is explicitly broken by the discretisation. We present the first continuum extrapolation of the mass spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The results are consistent with the formation of supermultiplets and the absence of non-perturbative sources of supersymmetry breaking. Our investigations also indicate that numerical lattice simulations can be applied to non-trivial supersymmetric theories.

The infrared regime of SU(2) with one adjoint Dirac flavour

SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavour in the adjoint representation is investigated on a lattice. Initial results for the gluonic and mesonic spectrum, static potential from Wilson and Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number are presented. The results found are not consistent with conventional confining behaviour, instead tentatively pointing towards a theory lying within or very near the onset of the conformal window, with the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate in the range $0.9 \lesssim γ_* \lesssim 0.95$. The implications of our work for building a viable theory of strongly interacting dynamics beyond the standard model are discussed.

Blocking-inspired supersymmetric actions: a status report

We provide a status report on the advances in blocking-inspired supersymmetric actions. This is done at the example of interacting supersymmetric quantum mechanics as well as the Wess-Zumino model. We investigate in particular the implications of a nontrivial realisation of translational symmetry on the lattice in this approach. We also discuss the locality of symmetry generators.

Effective lattice Polyakov loop theory for finite temperature Yang-Mills

Effective Polyakov loop theories are a useful tool for an investigation of pure Yang-Mills theory and full QCD. A systematic derivation of the effective action can be done in a spatial strong coupling expansion. Quite accurate predictions for the deconfinement phase transition of Yang-Mills theory have been obtained in this approach. Besides the critical couplings, further observables can be measured in the effective theory. These provide additional tests for the reliability of the strong coupling approach and the truncation of the effective action. In this contribution we will present recent results for the free energy of the static quark-antiquark pair and the equation of state.

Effective lattice Polyakov loop theory vs. full SU(3) Yang-Mills at finite temperature

A three-dimensional effective theory of Polyakov loops has recently been derived from Wilson's Yang-Mills lattice action by means of a strong coupling expansion. It is valid in the confined phase up to the deconfinement phase transition, for which it predicts the correct order and gives quantitative estimates for the critical coupling. In this work we study its predictive power for further observables like correlation functions and the equation of state. We find that the effective theory correctly reproduces qualitative features and symmetries of the full theory as the continuum is approached. Regarding quantitative predictions, we identify two classes of observables by numerical comparison as well as analytic calculations: correlation functions and their associated mass scales cannot be described accurately from a truncated effective theory, due to its inherently non-local nature involving long-range couplings. On the other hand, phase transitions and bulk thermodynamic quantities are accurately reproduced by the leading local part of the effective theory. In particular, the effective theory description is numerically superior when computing the equation of state at low temperatures or the properties of the phase transition.

First results for SU(2) Yang-Mills with one adjoint Dirac Fermion

We present a first exploratory study of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavour in the adjoint representation. We provide initial results for the spectroscopy and the anomalous dimension for the chiral condensate. Our investigation indicates that the theory is conformal or near-conformal, with an anomalous dimension of order one. A discussion of the relevance of these findings in relation to walking technicolor scenarios is also presented.

N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the lattice

Numerical simulations of supersymmetric theories on the lattice are intricate and challenging with respect to their theoretical foundations and algorithmic realisation. Nevertheless, the simulations of a four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory have made considerable improvements over the recent years. In this contribution we summarise the results of our collaboration concerning the mass spectrum of this theory. The investigation of systematic errors allows now a more precise estimate concerning the expected formation of supersymmetric multiplets of the lightest particles. These multiplets contain flavour singlet mesons, glueballs, and an additional fermionic state.

Towards the spectrum of low-lying particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We present the current results of our simulations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice. The masses of the gluino-glue particle, the a-eta-prime, the a-f0 meson, and the scalar glueball are obtained at finer lattice spacing than before, and extrapolations towards vanishing gluino mass are made. The calculations employ different levels of stout smearing. The statistical accuracy as well as the control of finite size effects and lattice artefacts are better than in previous investigations. Taking the statistical and systematic uncertainties into account, the extrapolations towards vanishing gluino mass of the masses of the fermionic and bosonic states in our present calculations are consistent with the formation of degenerate supermultiplets.

The gluino-glue particle and finite size effects in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

The spectrum of particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is expected to contain a spin 1/2 bound state of gluons and gluinos, the gluino-glue particle. We study the mass of this particle in softly broken supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a lattice by means of numerical simulations. The main focus is the estimation of finite size effects. We extrapolate the mass first to the infinite volume and then to the limit of a vanishing gluino mass. The results indicate that finite size effects are tolerable on lattices of moderate size, and that remaining deviations from supersymmetry are probably due to finite lattice spacing effects.

The gluino-glue particle and relevant scales for the simulations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is in several respects different from QCD and pure Yang-Mills theory. Therefore, a reinvestigation of the scales, at which finite size effects and lattice artifacts become relevant, is necessary. Both, finite size effects and lattice artifacts, induce a breaking of supersymmetry. In view of the unexpected mass gap between bosonic and fermionic particles an estimation of these effects is essential.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: a step towards the continuum

The spectrum of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory presented so far shows an unexpected gap between the bosonic and fermionic masses. This finding was in contradiction with the basic requirements of supersymmetry. In this work we will present new results indicating that the mass gap is reduced at a smaller lattice spacing. Hence lattice artifacts are the most likely explanation for it. These new results have been obtained at a larger beta value and on a larger lattice.

Supersymmetry on the lattice and the status of the Super-Yang-Mills simulations

Supersymmetry (SUSY) and supersymmetric field theories are an interesting topic for numerical lattice simulations. Similar to the chiral symmetry there is also no local realization of (interacting) supersymmetry on the lattice. I briefly review the basic reasons for the breaking of supersymmetry. One attempt to solve the problem uses a Ginsparg-Wilson relation for supersymmetry. However, apart from the free theory, a solution of this relation has so far not been found. For supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory a fine-tuning of the bare gluino mass is enough to arrive at a supersymmetric continuum limit. The last part of this work contains a short status report of recent SYM simulations.

The two dimensional N=(2,2) Wess-Zumino Model in the Functional Renormalization Group Approach

We study the supersymmetric N=(2,2) Wess-Zumino model in two dimensions with the functional renormalization group. At leading order in the supercovariant derivative expansion we recover the nonrenormalization theorem which states that the superpotential has no running couplings. Beyond leading order the renormalization of the bare mass is caused by a momentum dependent wave function renormalization. To deal with the partial differential equations we have developed a numerical toolbox called FlowPy. For weak couplings the quantum corrections to the bare mass found in lattice simulations is reproduced with high accuracy. But in the regime with intermediate couplings higher-order-operators that are not constrained by the nonrenormalization theorem yield the dominating contribution to the renormalized mass.

Generalisations of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and a remnant of supersymmetry on the lattice

We introduce a lattice symmetry relation for field theories with general linear symmetries. For chiral symmetry the well-known Ginsparg-Wilson relation is reproduced. The new relation encodes the remnant of the original symmetry on the lattice and guides the construction of invariant lattice actions. We apply this approach to lattice supersymmetry. There, an additional constraint has to be satisfied which originates in the derivative operator in the symmetry transformations. As a consequence the non-local SLAC derivative operator appears in the lattice transformation. Despite this non-local form we show how local solutions for quadratic actions can be found. For interacting theories the relation in general leads to a non-polynomial action that can be reduced to a finite polynomial order only under certain conditions.

preprint2008arXiv

Generalising the Ginsparg-Wilson relation: Lattice Supersymmetry from Blocking Transformations

The Ginsparg-Wilson relation is extended to interacting field theories with general linear symmetries. Our relation encodes the remnant of the original symmetry in terms of the blocked fields and guides the construction of invariant lattice actions. We apply this approach in the case of lattice supersymmetry. An additional constraint has to be satisfied because of the appearance of a derivative operator in the symmetry transformations. The solution of this constraint leads to non-local SLAC-type derivatives. We investigate the corresponding kinetic operators on the lattice within an exact solution of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. These solutions - analogues of the overlap operator for supersymmetry - can be made local through a specific choice of the blocking kernel. We show that the corresponding relation allows for local lattice symmetry operators as well as local lattice actions. We argue that for interacting theories the lattice action is polynomial in the fields only under special circumstances, which is exemplified within an exact solution.

Numerical Investigation of the 2D N=2 Wess-Zumino Model

We study lattice formulations of the two-dimensional N=2 Wess-Zumino model with a cubic superpotential. Discretizations with and without lattice supersymmetries are compared. We observe that the "Nicolai improvement" introduces new problems to simulations of the supersymmetric model. With high statistics we check the degeneracy of bosonic and fermionic masses on the lattice. Perturbative mass corrections to one-loop order are compared with continuum extrapolations of our lattice results in the weakly coupled regime. For intermediate couplings first results of fermionic masses in the continuum are presented where deviations from the perturbative result are observed.
