Fundamental Composite Dynamics: A Review

We introduce fundamental gauge theories that can be employed to construct informed composite bright and dark extensions of the Standard Model, within and beyond the standard paradigms. The gap between theory and experiments is bridged by providing predictions and ways to test them, for example, at the Fermi scale and via precision flavor experiments. We will review time-honoured paradigms from (walking) technicolor to composite Goldstone Higgs and discuss their features and differences. Standard model fermion mass generation in composite models will also be discussed along with the challenges and opportunities that it offers. To be concrete and pedagogical we will concentrate on minimal constructions featuring strongly coupled gauge theories supporting the global symmetry breaking pattern SU(4)/Sp(4). The most minimal underlying fundamental description consists of an SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions transforming according to the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This minimal choice enables us to use first principle lattice results to predict the massive spectrum for models of composite (Goldstone) Higgs dynamics and strongly interacting dark matter, of immediate impact for current and future experimental searches. Because composite dynamics embraces a rich spectrum of theories with dynamics ranging from QCD-like behaviour to (near) conformal one, we also report here the state-of-the-art of numerical and analytic properties of several strongly coupled theories including their spectrum, phase diagrams and, when applicable, their (near) conformal data.

Walking Dynamics Guaranteed

We report evidence for a continuous transition from an infrared conformal phase to a chirally broken one in four dimensions. We study a model with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation of an SU(2) gauge interaction and a chirally symmetric four-fermion interaction. At large four-fermion coupling, the model goes through a transition into a chirally broken phase and infrared conformality is lost. We show strong evidence that this transition is continuous, which would guarantee walking dynamics within the scaling region in the chirally broken phase.

$SU(2)$ Gauge Theory with Two Fundamental Flavours: Scalar and Pseudoscalar Spectrum

We investigate the scalar and pseudoscalar spectrum of the $SU(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=2$ flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation using non perturbative lattice simulations. We provide first benchmark estimates of the mass of the lightest $0(0^{+})$ ($σ$), $0(0^{-})$ ($η'$) and $1(0^+)$ ($a_0$) states, including estimates of the relevant disconnected contributions. We find $m_{a_0}/F_{\rm{PS}}= 16.7(4.9)$, $m_σ/F_{\rm{PS}}=19.2(10.8)$ and $m_{η'}/F_{\rm{PS}} = 12.8(4.7)$. These values for the masses of light scalar states provide crucial information for composite extensions of the Standard Model from the unified Fundamental Composi te Higgs-Technicolor theory \cite{Cacciapaglia:2014uja} to models of composite dark matter.

A simple method to optimize HMC performance

We present a practical strategy to optimize a set of Hybrid Monte Carlo parameters in simulations of QCD and QCD-like theories. We specialize to the case of mass-preconditioning, with multiple time-step Omelyan integrators. Starting from properties of the shadow Hamiltonian we show how the optimal setup for the integrator can be chosen once the forces and their variances are measured, assuming that those only depend on the mass-preconditioning parameter.

Adjoint SU(2) with Four Fermion Interactions

Four fermion interactions appear in many models of Beyond Standard Model physics. In Technicolour and composite Higgs models Standard Model fermion masses can be generated by four fermion terms. They are also expected to modify the dynamics of the new strongly interacting sector. In particular in technicolour models it has been suggested that they can be used to break infrared conformality and produce a walking theory with a large mass anomalous dimension. We study the SU(2) gauge theory with 2 adjoint fermions and a chirally symmetric four fermion term. We demonstrate chiral symmetry breaking at large four fermion coupling and study the phase diagram of the model.

Anomalous Dimensions of Conformal Baryons

We determine the anomalous dimensions of baryon operators for the three color theory as function of the number of massless flavours within the conformal window to the maximum known order in perturbation theory. We show that the anomalous dimension of the baryon is controllably small, within the $δ$-expansion, for a wide range of number of flavours. We also find that this is always smaller than the anomalous dimension of the fermion mass operator. These findings challenge the partial compositeness paradigm.

BSMBench: a flexible and scalable supercomputer benchmark from computational particle physics

Lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD), and by extension its parent field, Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT), make up a significant fraction of supercomputing cycles worldwide. As such, it would be irresponsible not to evaluate machines' suitability for such applications. To this end, a benchmark has been developed to assess the performance of LGT applications on modern HPC platforms. Distinct from previous QCD-based benchmarks, this allows probing the behaviour of a variety of theories, which allows varying the ratio of demands between on-node computations and inter-node communications. The results of testing this benchmark on various recent HPC platforms are presented, and directions for future development are discussed.

Rho meson decay width in SU(2) gauge theories with 2 fundamental flavours

SU(2) gauge theories with two quark flavours in the fundamental representation are among the most promising theories of composite dynamics describing the electroweak sector. Three out of five Goldstone bosons in these models become the longitudinal components of the W and Z bosons giving them mass. Like in QCD, we expect a spectrum of excitations which appear as resonances in vector boson scattering, in particular the vector resonance corresponding to the rho-meson in QCD. In this talk I will present the preliminary results of the first calculation of the rho-meson decay width in this theory, which is analogous to rho to two pions decay calculation in QCD. The results presented were calculated in a moving frame with total momentum (0,0,1) on two ensembles. Future plans include using 3 moving frames on a larger set of ensembles to extract the resonance parameters more reliably and also take the chiral and continuum limits.

SU(2) Gauge Theory with Two Fundamental Flavours: a Minimal Template for Model Building

We investigate the continuum spectrum of the SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f=2$ flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation. This model provides a minimal template which is ideal for a wide class of Standard Model extensions featuring novel strong dynamics that range from composite (Goldstone) Higgs theories to several intriguing types of dark matter candidates, such as the SIMPs. We improve our previous lattice analysis [1] by adding more data at light quark masses, at two additional lattice spacings, by determining the lattice cutoff via a Wilson flow measure of the $w_0$ parameter, and by measuring the relevant renormalisation constants non-perturbatively in the RI'-MOM scheme. Our results for the lightest isovector states in the vector and axial channels, in units of the pseudoscalar decay constant, are $m_V/F_{\rm{PS}}\sim 13.1(2.2)$ and $m_A/F_{\rm{PS}}\sim 14.5(3.6)$ (combining statistical and systematic errors). In the context of the composite (Goldstone) Higgs models, our result for the spin-one resonances are $m_V > 3.2(5)$ TeV and $m_A > 3.6(9)$ TeV, which are above the current LHC constraints. In the context of dark matter models, for the SIMP case our results indicate the occurrence of a compressed spectrum at the required large dark pion mass, which implies the need to include the effects of spin-one resonances in phenomenological estimates.

Conformal symmetry vs. chiral symmetry breaking in the SU(3) sextet model

We present new results for the SU(3) "sextet model" with two flavors transforming according to the two-index symmetric representation of the gauge group. The simulations are performed using unimproved Wilson fermions. We measure the meson and baryon spectrum of the theory for multiple bare quark masses at two different lattice spacings. To address the pressing issue of whether the model is inside or below the conformal window, we compare the spectrum to the expectations for a theory with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and to those of an IR conformal theory. Regardless of the answer (conformal or chirally broken), the theory is a cornerstone in our understanding of near-conformal and composite dynamics, ranging from Technicolor models to unparticle physics. It is also interesting for the composite dynamics of vector-like singlets with respect to the Standard Model interactions.

Reweighting twisted boundary conditions

Imposing twisted boundary conditions on the fermionic fields is a procedure extensively used when evaluating, for example, form factors on the lattice. Twisting is usually performed for one flavour and only in the valence, and this causes a breaking of unitarity. In this work we explore the possibility of restoring unitarity through the reweighting method. We first study some properties of the approach at tree level and then we stochastically evaluate ratios of fermionic determinants for different boundary conditions in order to include them in the gauge averages, avoiding in this way the expensive generation of new configurations for each choice of the twisting angle, $θ$. As expected the effect of reweighting is negligible in the case of large volumes but it is important when the volumes are small and the twisting angles are large. In particular we find a measurable effect for the plaquette and the pion correlation function in the case of $θ=π/2$ in a volume $16\times 8^3$, and we observe a systematic upward shift in the pion dispersion relation.

Template Composite Dark Matter : SU(2) gauge theory with 2 fundamental flavours

We present a non perturbative study of SU(2) gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavours. We discuss how the model can be used as a template for composite Dark Matter (DM). We estimate one particular interaction of the DM candidate with the Standard Model : the interaction through photon exchange computing the electric polarizability of the DM candidate. Finally, we briefly discuss the viability of the model given the present experimental constraints.

Composite (Goldstone) Higgs Dynamics on the Lattice: Spectrum of SU(2) Gauge Theory with two Fundamental Fermions

We study the meson spectrum of the SU(2) gauge theory with two Wilson fermions in the fundamental representation. The theory unifies both Technicolor and composite Goldstone Boson Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking. We have calculated the masses of the lightest spin one vector and axial vector mesons. In addition, we have also obtained preliminary results for the mass of the lightest scalar (singlet) meson state. The simulations have been done with multiple masses and two different lattice spacings for chiral and continuum extrapolations. The spin one meson masses set lower limits for accelerator experiments, whereas the scalar meson will mix with a pGB of the theory and produce two scalar states. The lighter of the states is the 125 GeV Higgs boson, and the heavier would be a new yet unobserved scalar state.

Composite Goldstone Dark Matter: Experimental Predictions from the Lattice

We study, via first principles lattice simulations, the nonperturbative dynamics of $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two fundamental Dirac flavors. The model can be used simultaneously as a template for composite Goldstone boson dark matter and for breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically. We compute the form factor, allowing us to estimate the associated electromagnetic charge radius. Interestingly we observe that the form factor obeys vector meson dominance even for the two color theory. We finally compare the model predictions with dark matter direct detection experiments. We find that the composite Goldstone boson dark matter cross sections is constrained by the most stringent direct-detection experiments. Our results are a foundation for quantitative new composite dynamics relevant for model building, and are of interest to current experiments.

Fundamental Composite Higgs Dynamics on the Lattice: SU(2) with Two Flavors

In reference [1] a unified description, both at the effective and fundamental Lagrangian level, of models of composite Higgs dynamics was proposed. In the unified framework the Higgs itself can emerge, depending on the way the electroweak symmetry is embedded, either as a pseudo-Goldstone boson or as a massive excitation of the condensate. The most minimal fundamental description consists of an SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions transforming according to the defining representation of the gauge group. We therefore provide first principle lattice results for the massive spectrum of this theory. We confirm the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon and determine the lightest spin-one axial and vector masses. The knowledge of the energy scale at which new states will appear at the Large Hadron Collider is of the utmost relevance to guide experimental searches of new physics.

Exceptional and Spinorial Conformal Windows

We study the conformal window of gauge theories containing fermionic matter fields, where the gauge group is any of the exceptional groups with the fermions transforming according to the fundamental and adjoint representations and the orthogonal groups where the fermions transform according to a spinorial representation. We investigate the phase diagram using a purely perturbative four loop analysis, the all-orders beta function and the ladder approximation.

Isotriplet Dark Matter on the Lattice: SO(4)-gauge theory with two Vector Wilson fermions

We present preliminary results for simulations of SO(4)-gauge theory with two Dirac Wilson fermions transforming according to the vector representation. We map out the phase diagram including the strong coupling bulk phase transition line as well as the zero PCAC-mass line. In addition, we measure the pseudo scalar and vector meson masses, and investigate whether the theory features chiral symmetry breaking. If the theory is used for breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically it is the orthogonal group equivalent of the Minimal Walking Technicolor model but with the following distinctive features: a] It provides a natural complex weak isotriplet of Goldstone bosons of which the neutral component can be identified with a light composite dark matter state; b] It is expected to break the global symmetry spontaneously; c] It is free from fermionic composite states made by a techniglue and a technifermion.

Light Asymmetric Dark Matter on the Lattice: SU(2) Technicolor with Two Fundamental Flavors

The SU(2) gauge theory with two massless Dirac flavors constitutes the building block of several models of Technicolor. Furthermore it has also been used as a template for the construction of a natural light asymmetric, or mixed type, dark matter candidate. We use explicit lattice simulations to confirm the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking by determining the Goldstone spectrum and therefore show that the dark matter candidate can, de facto, be constituted by a complex Goldstone boson. We also determine the phenomenologically relevant spin-one and spin-zero isovector spectrum and demonstrate that it is well separated from the Goldstone spectrum.

Orthogonal Technicolor with Isotriplet Dark Matter on the Lattice

We study the gauge dynamics of an SO(4)-gauge theory with two Dirac Wilson fermions transforming according to the vector representation of the gauge group. We determine the lattice phase diagram by locating the strong coupling bulk phase transition line and the zero PCAC mass line. We present results for the spectrum of the theory. In particular we measure the pseudoscalar, vector and axial meson masses. The data are consistent with a chiral symmetry breaking scenario rather than a conformal one. When used to break the electroweak symmetry dynamically the model leads to a natural dark matter candidate.

Beta Function and Anomalous Dimensions

We demonstrate that it is possible to determine the coefficients of an all-order beta function linear in the anomalous dimensions using as data the two-loop coefficients together with the first one of the anomalous dimensions which are universal. The beta function allows to determine the anomalous dimension of the fermion masses at the infrared fixed point, and the resulting values compare well with the lattice determinations.

Finite volume effects in SU(2) with two adjoint fermions

Many evidences from lattice simulations support the idea that SU(2) with two Dirac flavors in the adjoint representation (also called Minimal Walking Technicolor) is IR conformal. A possible way to see this is through the behavior of the spectrum of the mass-deformed theory. When fermions are massive, a mass-gap is generated and the theory is confined. IR-conformality is recovered in the chiral limit: masses of particles vanish in the chiral limit, while their ratios stay finite. In order to trust this analysis one has to relay on the infinite volume extrapolation. We will discuss the finite volume effects on the mesonic spectrum, investigated by varying the size of the lattice and by changing the boundary conditions for the fields.

Flavor Dependence of the S-parameter

We extend the results of [arXiv:1006.0207 [hep-lat]] by computing the S-parameter at two loops in the perturbative region of the conformal window. Consistently using the expression for the location of the infra-red fixed point at the two-loop order we express the S-parameter in terms of the number of flavors, colors and matter representation. We show that S, normalized to the number of flavors, increases as we decrease the number of flavors. Our findings support the conjecture presented in [arXiv:1006.0207 [hep-lat]] according to which the normalized value of the S-parameter at the upper end of the conformal window constitutes the lower bound across the entire phase diagram for the given underlying asymptotically free gauge theory. We also show that the non-trivial dependence on the number of flavors merges naturally with the non-perturbative estimate of the S-parameter close to the lower end of the conformal window obtained using gauge duality [arXiv:1007.0254 [hep-ph]]. Our results are natural benchmarks for lattice computations of the S-parameter for vector-like gauge theories.

Improved Lattice Spectroscopy of Minimal Walking Technicolor

We present a numerical study of spectroscopic observables in the SU(2) gauge theory with two adjoint fermions using improved source and sink operators. We compare in detail our improved results with previous determinations of masses that used point sources and sinks and we investigate possible systematic effects in both cases. Such comparison enables us to clearly assess the impact of a short temporal extent on the physical picture, and to investigate some effects due to the finite spatial box. While confirming the IR-conformal behaviour of the theory, our investigation shows that in order to make firm quantitative predictions, a better handle on finite size effects is needed.

Magnetic Fixed Points and Emergent Supersymmetry

We establish the existence of fixed points for certain gauge theories candidate to be magnetic duals of QCD with one adjoint Weyl fermion. In the perturbative regime of the magnetic theory the existence of a very large number of fixed points is unveiled. We classify them by analyzing their basin of attraction. The existence of several nonsupersymmetric fixed points for the magnetic gauge theory lends further support towards the existence of gauge-gauge duality beyond supersymmetry. We also discover that among these very many fixed points there are supersymmetric ones emerging from a generic nonsupersymmetric renormalization group flow. We therefore conclude that supersymmetry naturally emerges as a fixed point theory from a nonsupersymmetric Lagrangian without the need for fine-tuning of the bare couplings. Our results suggest that supersymmetry can be viewed as an emergent phenomenon in field theory. In particular there should be no need for fine-tuning the bare couplings when performing Lattice simulations aimed to investigate supersymmetry on the Lattice.

S-parameter at Non-Zero Temperature and Chemical Potential

We compute the finite-temperature and matter density corrections to the S-parameter at the one loop level. At non-zero temperature T and matter density Lorentz symmetry breaks and therefore we suggest a suitable generalization of the S-parameter. By computing the plasma correction, we discover a reduction of the S-parameter in the physically relevant region of small external momenta for any non-zero chemical potential and T. In particular, the S-parameter vanishes at small m/T, where m is the mass of the fermions, due to the finite extent of the temporal direction. Our results are directly applicable to the determination of the S-parameter via first principle lattice simulations performed with anti-periodic boundary conditions in the temporal direction.

Confining vs. conformal scenario for SU(2) with adjoint fermions. Gluonic observables

Walking technicolor is a mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking without Higgs field. The Higgs mechanism is provided by chiral symmetry breaking in the technicolor theory. An essential ingredient is the vicinity to an IR fixed point, which could reconcile technicolor with the electroweak precision tests. SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac adjoint fermions has been proposed as a candidate for walking technicolor. Understanding whether this theory is confining or IR-conformal is a challenging problem, which can be addressed by means of numerical simulations. We have pointed out that a clean signal for the existence of an IR fixed point in this theory can be obtained by comparing the mesonic and gluonic sectors. We review some technical details of our calculations. Possible systematic errors are discussed.

Higher representations on the lattice: numerical simulations. SU(2) with adjoint fermions

We discuss the lattice formulation of gauge theories with fermions in arbitrary representations of the color group, and present in detail the implementation of the HMC/RHMC algorithm for simulating dynamical fermions. We discuss the validation of the implementation through an extensive set of tests, and the stability of simulations by monitoring the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of the Wilson-Dirac operator. Working with two flavors of Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation, benchmark results for realistic lattice simulations are presented. Runs are performed on different lattice sizes ranging from 4^3x8 to 24^3x64 sites. For the two smallest lattices we also report the measured values of benchmark mesonic observables. These results can be used as a baseline for rapid cross-checks of simulations in higher representations. The results presented here are the first steps towards more extensive investigations with controlled systematic errors, aiming at a detailed understanding of the phase structure of these theories, and of their viability as candidates for strong dynamics beyond the Standard model.

Hot Conformal Gauge Theories

We compute the nonzero temperature free energy up to the order g^6 \ln(1/g) in the coupling constant for vector like SU(N) gauge theories featuring matter transforming according to different representations of the underlying gauge group. The number of matter fields, i.e. flavors, is arranged in such a way that the theory develops a perturbative stable infrared fixed point at zero temperature. Due to large distance conformality we trade the coupling constant with its fixed point value and define a reduced free energy which depends only on the number of flavors, colors and matter representation. We show that the reduced free energy changes sign, at the second, fifth and sixth order in the coupling, when decreasing the number of flavors from the upper end of the conformal window. If the change in sign is interpreted as signal of an instability of the system then we infer a critical number of flavors. Surprisingly this number, if computed to the order g^2, agrees with previous predictions for the lower boundary of the conformal window for nonsupersymmetric gauge theories. The higher order results tend to predict a higher number of critical flavors. These are universal properties, i.e. they are independent on the specific matter representation.

Improved Spectroscopy of Minimal Walking Technicolor

We present an improved study of spectroscopic observables in the $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory with two adjoint fermions. We make an improvement on the precision of previous results which clarify the scale of finite volume effects present. This analysis adds to the evidence for near-conformal dynamics of this theory, while indicating a preference for a low anomalous mass dimension of the massless theory.

Mass anomalous dimension and running of the coupling in SU(2) with six fundamental fermions

We simulate SU(2) gauge theory with six massless fundamental Dirac fermions. By using the Schrödinger Functional method we measure the running of the coupling and the fermion mass over a wide range of length scales. We observe very slow running of the coupling and construct an estimator for the fermion mass anomalous dimension giving $0.135 <γ< 1.03$ in the region compatible with an IR fixed point.

Mesonic spectroscopy of Minimal Walking Technicolor

We investigate the structure and the novel emerging features of the mesonic non-singlet spectrum of the Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT) theory. Precision measurements in the nonsinglet pseudoscalar and vector channels are compared to the expectations for an IR-conformal field theory and a QCD-like theory. Our results favor a scenario in which MWT is (almost) conformal in the infrared, while spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking seems less plausible.

The infrared dynamics of Minimal Walking Technicolor

We study the gauge sector of Minimal Walking Technicolor, which is an SU(2) gauge theory with nf=2 flavors of Wilson fermions in the adjoint representation. Numerical simulations are performed on lattices Nt x Ns^3, with Ns ranging from 8 to 16 and Nt=2Ns, at fixed β=2.25, and varying the fermion bare mass m0, so that our numerical results cover the full range of fermion masses from the quenched region to the chiral limit. We present results for the string tension and the glueball spectrum. A comparison of mesonic and gluonic observables leads to the conclusion that the infrared dynamics is given by an SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory with a typical energy scale for the spectrum sliding to zero with the fermion mass. The typical mesonic mass scale is proportional to, and much larger than this gluonic scale. Our findings are compatible with a scenario in which the massless theory is conformal in the infrared. An analysis of the scaling of the string tension with the fermion mass towards the massless limit allows us to extract the chiral condensate anomalous dimension γ*, which is found to be γ*=0.22+-0.06.

Mass anomalous dimension in SU(2) with two adjoint fermions

We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two flavours of Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. We measure the running of the coupling in the Schroedinger Functional (SF) scheme and find it is consistent with existing results. We discuss how systematic errors affect the evidence for an infrared fixed point (IRFP). We present the first measurement of the running of the mass in the SF scheme. The anomalous dimension of the chiral condensate, which is relevant for phenomenological applications, can be easily extracted from the running of the mass, under the assumption that the theory has an IRFP. At the current level of accuracy, we can estimate 0.05 < gamma < 0.56 at the IRFP.

We calculate the running of the Schroedinger Functional coupling and the renormalised quark mass over a wide range of length scales. The running of the coupling is consistent with the existence of an infrared fixed point (IRFP), and we find 0.07 < gamma < 0.56 at the IRFP, depending on the value of the critical coupling.

Fermions in higher representations. Some results about SU(2) with adjoint fermions

We discuss the lattice formulation of gauge theories with fermions in arbitrary representations of the color group, and present the implementation of the RHMC algorithm for simulating dynamical Wilson fermions. A first dataset is presented for the SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions in the adjoint representation, which has been proposed as a possible technicolor candidate. Simulations are performed on 8^3x16 lattices, at fixed lattice spacing. The PCAC mass, the pseudoscalar, vector and axial meson masses, the pseudoscalar meson decay constant are computed. The extrapolation to the chiral limit is discussed. However more extensive investigations are needed in order to control the systematic errors in the numerical results, and then understand in detail the phase structure of these theories.

Orientifold Planar Equivalence: The Chiral Condensate

The recently introduced orientifold planar equivalence is a promising tool for solving non-perturbative problems in QCD. One of the predictions of orientifold planar equivalence is that the chiral condensates of a theory with $N_f$ flavours of Dirac fermions in the symmetric (or antisymmetric) representation and $N_f$ flavours of Majorana fermions in the adjoint representation have the same large $N$ value for any value of the mass of the (degenerate) fermions. Assuming the invariance of the theory under charge conjugation, we prove this statement on the lattice for staggered quenched condensates in SU($N$) Yang-Mills in the large $N$ limit. Then, we compute numerically those quenched condensates for $N$ up to 8. After separating the even from the odd corrections in $1/N$, we are able to show that our data support the equivalence; however, unlike other quenched observables, subleading terms in $1/N$ are needed for describing the data for the symmetric and antisymmetric representation at $N$=3. Possible lessons for the unquenched case are discussed.

Renormalized Polyakov loops in various representations in finite temperature SU(2) gauge theory

We present results for the renormalized Polyakov loop in the three lowest irreducible representations of SU(2) gauge theory at finite temperature. We will discuss their scaling behavior near $T_c$ and test Casimir scaling in the deconfined phase. Moreover, we will compare these results to calculations for the renormalized Polyakov loops in several representations in the SU(3) gauge theory.
