Growth rates of groups associated with face 2-coloured triangulations and directed Eulerian digraphs on the sphere

Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a properly face 2-coloured (say black and white) \break piecewise-linear triangulation of the sphere with vertex set $V$. Consider the abelian group $\mathcal{A}_W$ generated by the set $V$, with relations $r+c+s=0$ for all white triangles with vertices $r$, $c$ and $s$. The group $\mathcal{A}_B$ can be defined similarly, using black triangles. These groups are related in the following manner $\mathcal{A}_W\cong\mathcal{A}_B\cong\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathcal{C}$ where $\mathcal{C}$ is a finite abelian group. The finite torsion subgroup $\mathcal{C}$ is referred to as the canonical group of the triangulation. Let $m_t$ be the maximal order of $\mathcal{C}$ over all properly face two-coloured spherical triangulations with $t$ triangles of each colour. By relating properly face two-coloured spherical triangulations to directed Eulerian spherical embeddings of digraphs whose abelian sand-pile groups are isomorphic to $\mathcal{C}$ we provide improved upper and lower bounds for $\lim \sup_{t\rightarrow\infty}(m_t)^{1/t}$.

On which groups can arise as the canonical group of a spherical latin bitrade

We address a question of Cavenagh and Wanless asking: which finite abelian groups arise as the canonical group of a spherical latin bitrade? We prove the existence of an infinite family of finite abelian groups that do not arise as canonical groups of spherical latin bitrades. Using a connection between abelian sandpile groups of digraphs underlying directed Eulerian spherical embeddings, we go on to provide several, general, families of finite abelian groups that do arise as canonical groups. These families include: any abelian group in which each component of the Smith Normal Form has composite order; any abelian group with Smith Normal Form $\mathbb{Z}^{n}_p\oplus\left(\bigoplus_{i=1}^k\mathbb{Z}_{pa_i}\right)$, where $1\leq k$, $2\leq a_1,a_2,\ldots, a_k,p$ and $n\leq 1+2\sum_{i=1}^k(a_i - 1)$; and with one exception and three potential exceptions any abelian group of rank two.

Triangulations of the sphere, bitrades and abelian groups

Let $G$ be a triangulation of the sphere with vertex set $V$, such that the faces of the triangulation are properly coloured black and white. Motivated by applications in the theory of bitrades, Cavenagh and Wanless defined $A_W$ to be the abelian group generated by the set $V$, with relations $r+c+s=0$ for all white triangles with vertices $r$, $c$ and $s$. The group $A_B$ can be defined similarly, using black triangles. The paper shows that $A_W$ and $A_B$ are isomorphic, thus establishing the truth of a well-known conjecture of Cavenagh and Wanless. Connections are made between the structure of $A_W$ and the theory of asymmetric Laplacians of finite directed graphs, and weaker results for orientable surfaces of higher genus are given. The relevance of the group $A_W$ to the understanding of the embeddings of a partial latin square in an abelian group is also explained.
