Multiscale Experimental Evidence of a Transitory State in the HDA-LDA Transition in Alumino-sodo-silicate Glasses

The structural evolution with temperature of pure silica (SiO2), sodium-silicate (5Na2O-95SiO2, 10Na2O-90SiO2 and 25Na2O-75SiO2) and albite (15Na2O-15Al2O3-75SiO2) glasses previously densified from hot compression is monitored with a combination of small and wide angle x-ray scattering. Transient scattering maxima in the length scales associated with both techniques indicate the presence of a transitory state, suggesting the classification of the initial and final states as distinct glass states in the context of polyamorphism. In all glasses, a transient intensity peak in the small angle scattering is observed, consistent with the nucleation of a new amorphous state. Based on a comparison with the phenomenology observed in supercooled and glassy water, we propose that this structural evolution provide a strong evidence of the glass polyamorphism as the consequence of the existence of an underlying but thermodynamically defined liquid-liquid transition, independent on the polymerization degree of the system.

Blue light absorption enhancement based on vertically channelling modes in nano-holes arrays

We investigate the specific optical regime occurring at short wavelengths, in the high absorption regime, in silicon thin-films patterned by periodically arranged nano-holes. Near-field scanning optical microscopy indicates that the incoming light is coupled to vertically channelling modes. Optical modelling and simulations show that the light, travelling inside the low-index regions, is absorbed at the direct vicinity of the nano-holes sidewalls. This channelling regime should be taken into account for light management in optoelectronic devices.

Down Converter Device Combining Rare-Earth Doped Thin Layer and Photonic Crystal for c-Si Based Solar Cell

The aim of the study is to develop ultra-compact structures enabling an efficient conversion of single high energy photon (UV) to two lower energy photons (IR). The proposed structure combines rare-earths doped thin layer allowing the down-conversion process with a photonic crystal (PhC), in order to control and enhance the down-conversion using optical resonances. On the top of the rare-earths doped layer, a silicon nitride (SiN) 2D planar PhC is synthesized. For that, SiN is first deposited by PECVD. After holographic lithography and reactive ion etching, a periodic square lattice of holes is generated on the SiN layer. The PhC topographical parameters as well as the layers thickness are optimized using Finite-Difference-Time-Domain simulations. The design and realization of such PhC-assisted down-converter structures is presented. Optical simulations demonstrate that the PhC leads to the establishment of resonant modes located in the underneath doped layer, allowing a drastic enhancement of the absorption of the rare-earth ions without disturbing the transmission in the visible and near-IR parts of the spectrum, hence demonstrating the relevance of such an approach.

Poisson ratio and excess low-frequency vibrational states in glasses

In glass, starting from a dependence of the Angell's fragility on the Poisson ratio [V. N. Novikov and A. P. Sokolov, Nature 431, 961 (2004)], and a dependence of the Poisson ratio on the atomic packing density [G. N. Greaves et al., Nat. Mater. 10, 823 (2011)], we propose that the heterogeneities are predominantly density fluctuations in strong glasses (lower Poisson ratio) and shear elasticity fluctuations in fragile glasses (higher Poisson ratio). Because the excess of low-frequency vibration modes in comparison with the Debye regime (boson peak) is strongly connected to these fluctuations, we propose that they are breathing-like (with change of volume) in strong glasses and shear-like (without change of volume) in fragile glasses. As a verification, it is confirmed that the excess modes in the strong silica glass are predominantly breathing-like. Moreover, it is shown that the excess breathing-like modes in a strong polymeric glass are replaced by shear-like modes under hydrostatic pressure as the glass becomes more compact.
