Invariants of weakly successively almost positive links

As an extension of positive and almost positive diagrams and links, we study two classes of links we call successively almost positive and weakly successively almost positive links. We prove various properties of polynomial invariants and signatures of such links, extending previous results or answering open questions about positive or almost positive links. We discuss their minimal genus and fibering property and for the latter prove a fibering extension of Scharlemann-Thompson's theorem (valid for general links).

Essential open book foliation and fractional Dehn twist coefficient

We introduce an essential open book foliation, a refinement of the open book foliation, and develop technical estimates of the fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) of monodromies and the FDTC for closed braids, which we introduce as well. As applications, we quantitatively study the `gap' of overtwisted contact structures and a non-right-veering monodromies. We give sufficient conditions for a 3-manifold to be irreducible and atoroidal. We also show that the geometries of a 3-manifold and the complement of a closed braid are determined by the Nielsen-Thurston types of the monodromies of their open book decompositions.

Garside-theoretic analysis of Burau representations

We establish relations between both the classical and the dual Garside structures of the braid group and the Burau representation. Using the classical structure, we formulate a non-vanishing criterion for the Burau representation of the 4-strand braid group. In the dual context, it is shown that the Burau representation for arbitrary braid index is injective when restricted to the set of \emph{simply-nested braids}.

Construction of isolated left orderings via partially central cyclic amalgamation

We give a new method to construct isolated left orderings of groups whose positive cones are finitely generated. Our construction uses an amalgamated free product of two groups having an isolated ordering. We construct a lot of new examples of isolated orderings, and give an example of isolated left orderings having various properties which previously known isolated orderings do not have.

Operations on open book foliations

We study b-arc foliation change and exchange move of open book foliations which generalize the corresponding operations in braid foliation theory. We also define a bypass move as an analogue of Honda's bypass attachment operation. As applications, we study how open book foliations change under a stabilization of the open book. We also generalize Birman-Menasco's split/composite braid theorem: Closed braid representatives of a split (resp. composite) link in a certain open book can be converted to a split (resp. composite) closed braid by applying exchange moves finitely many times.

Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representations and dual Garside length of braids

We show that the span of the variable $q$ in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation matrix of a braid is equal to the twice of the dual Garside length of the braid, as was conjectured by Krammer. Our proof is close in spirit to Bigelow's geometric approach. The key observation is that the dual Garside length of a braid can be read off a certain labeling of its curve diagram.

Reading the dual Garside length of braids from homological and quantum representations

We show that Lawrence's representation and linear representations from quantum sl_2 called generic highest weight vectors detect the dual Garside length of braids in a simple and natural way. That is, by expressing a representation as a matrix over a Laurent polynomial ring using certain natural basis, the span of the variable is equal to the constant multiples of the dual Garside length.

Receiver Design for Realizing On-Demand WiFi Wake-up using WLAN Signals

In this paper, we design a simple, low-cost, and low-power wake-up receiver which can be used for an IEEE 802.11-compliant device to remotely wake up the other devices by utilizing its own wireless LAN (WLAN) signals. The employed wake-up mechanism utilizes the length of 802.11 data frame generated by a WiFi transmitter to differentiate the information conveyed to the wake-up receiver. The wake-up receiver is designed to reliably detect the length of transmitted data frame only with simple envelope detection and limited signal processing. We develop a prototype of the wake-up receiver and investigate the detection performance of the envelope of 802.11 signals. Our numerical results show that the proposed wake-up receiver achieves much larger detection range than the off-the-shelf, commercial receiver having the similar functionality.

Dehornoy-like left orderings and isolated left orderings

We introduce a Dehornoy-like ordering of groups, which is a generalization of the Dehornoy ordering of the braid groups. Under a weak assumption which we call Property F, we show that Dehornoy-like orderings have properties similar to the Dehornoy ordering, and produce isolated left orderings. We also construct new examples of Dehornoy-like ordering and isolated orderings and study their more precise properties.

Non-left-orderable double branched coverings

We develop a method to show the fundamental group of the double branched covering of a link is not left-orderable by introducing the notion of the coarse presentation. As in the usual group presentations, a coarse presentation is given by a set of generators and relations, but inequalities are allowed as relations. By using coarse presentation, we give a family of links whose double branched covering has the non-left-orderable fundamental group. Our family of links includes many known examples and new examples.

A note on geometric constructions of bi-invariant orderings

We construct bi-invariant total orderings of residually torsion-free nilpotent groups by using Chen's iterated integrals. This construction can be seen as a generalization of the Magnus ordering of the free groups, and equivalent to the classical construction which uses an iteration of central extensions. Our geometric construction provides a connection between bi-orderings and the rational homotopy theory.

On finite Thurston type orderings of braid groups

We prove that for any finite Thurston-type ordering $<_{T}$ on the braid group\ $B_{n}$, the restriction to the positive braid monoid $(B_{n}^{+},<_{T})$ is a\ well-ordered set of order type $ω^{ω^{n-2}}$. The proof uses a combi\ natorial description of the ordering $<_{T}$. Our combinatorial description is \ based on a new normal form for positive braids which we call the $\C$-normal fo\ rm. It can be seen as a generalization of Burckel's normal form and Dehornoy's \ $Φ$-normal form (alternating normal form).

Finite Thurston type orderings on dual braid monoids

For a finite Thurston type ordering < of the braid group B_{n}, we introduce a new normal form of a dual positive braid which we call the C-normal form. This normal form extends Fromentin's rotating normal form and the author's C-normal form of positive braids. Using the C-normal form, we give a combinatorial description of the restriction of the ordering < to the dual braid monoids B_{n}^{+*}. We prove that the restriction to the dual positive monoid (B_{n}^{+*},<) is a well-ordered set of order type ω^{ω^{n-2}}.

Braid ordering and the geometry of closed braid

The relationships between braid ordering and the geometry of its closure is studied. We prove that if an essential closed surface $F$ in the complements of closed braid has relatively small genus with respect to the Dehornoy floor of the braid, $F$ is circular-foliated in a sense of Birman-Menasco's Braid foliation theory. As an application of the result, we prove that if Dehornoy floor of braids are larger than three, Nielsen-Thurston classification of braids and the geometry of their closure's complements are in one-to-one correspondence. Using this result, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic knots explicitly from pseudo-Anosov element of mapping class groups.
