Synthesis of new high-entropy alloy-type Nb3 (Al, Sn, Ge, Ga, Si) superconductors

Studies on high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors have recently been increasing, particularly in the fields of materials science and condensed matter physics. To contribute to research on new HEA-type superconductors, in our study we synthesized polycrystalline samples of A15-type superconductors of Nb3Al0.2Sn0.2Ge0.2Ga0.2Si0.2 (#1) and Nb3Al0.3Sn0.3Ge0.2Ga0.1Si0.1 (#2) with an HEA-type site by arc melting. Elemental and structural analyses revealed that the compositions of the obtained samples satisfied the HEA state criteria. Superconducting transitions were observed at 9.0 and 11.0 K for #1 and #2, respectively, in the temperature dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. Specific heat measurements revealed that the Sommerfeld coefficient, Debye temperature, and ΔC/γTc for the obtained samples were close to those reported for conventional Nb3Sn family superconductors.

Bulk superconductivity induced by Se substitution in self-doped BiCh2-based compound CeOBiS2-xSex

We report the Se substitution effects on the crystal structure, superconducting properties, and valence states of self-doped BiCh2-based compound CeOBiS2-xSex. Polycrystalline CeOBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1.0 were synthesized. For x = 0.4 and 0.6, bulk superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction were observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements; the highest transition temperature (Tc) was 3.0 K for x = 0.6. A superconductivity phase diagram of CeOBiS2-xSex was established based on Tc estimated from the electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements. The emergence of superconductivity in CeOBiS2-xSex was explained with two essential parameters of in-plane chemical pressure and carrier concentration, which systematically changed with increasing Se concentration.

Detection of hole pockets in the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ from Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations

The bulk electronic structure of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$ features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center ($Γ$) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the $Γ-X$ direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in $T_d$-MoTe$_2$, because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we report an unambiguous detection of these elusive hole pockets via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. At ambient pressure, the quantum oscillation frequencies for these pockets are 988 T and 1513 T, when the magnetic field is applied along the $c$-axis. The quasiparticle effective masses $m^*$ associated with these frequencies are 1.50 $m_e$ and 2.77 $m_e$, respectively, indicating the importance of Coulomb interactions in this system. We further measure the SdH oscillations under pressure. At 13 kbar, we detected a peak at 1798 T with $m^*$ = 2.86 $m_e$. Relative to the oscillation data at a lower pressure, the amplitude of this peak experienced an enhancement, which can be attributed to the reduced curvature of the hole pockets under pressure. Combining our experimental data with DFT + $U$ calculations, where $U$ is the Hubbard parameter, our results shed light on why these important hole pockets have not been detected until now.

Superconducting properties of high-entropy-alloy tellurides M-Te (M: Ag, In, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, Bi) with a NaCl-type structure

High-entropy-alloy-type tellurides M-Te, which contain five different metals of M = Ag, In, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, and Bi, were synthesized using high pressure synthesis. Structural characterization revealed that all the obtained samples have a cubic NaCl-type structure. Six samples, namely AgCdSnSbPbTe5, AgInSnSbPbTe5, AgCdInSnSbTe5, AgCdSnPbBiTe5, AgCdInPbBiTe5, and AgCdInSnBiTe5 showed superconductivity. The highest transition temperature (Tc) among those samples was 1.4 K for AgInSnSbPbTe5. A sample of AgCdInSbPbTe5 showed a semiconductor-like transport behavior. From the relationship between Tc and lattice constant, it was found that a higher Tc is observed for a telluride with a larger lattice constant.

Superconductivity in CuAl2-type Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 with a high-entropy-alloy transition metal site

Research on high-entropy-alloy (HEA) superconductors is a growing field in material science. In this study, we explored new HEA-type superconductors and discovered a CuAl2-type superconductor Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 with a HEA-type transition metal site. A superconducting transition was observed at 8.0 K after electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. The bulk characteristics of the superconductivity were confirmed through the specific heat measurements. The discovery of superconductivity in HEA-type Co0.2Ni0.1Cu0.1Rh0.3Ir0.3Zr2 will provide a novel pathway to explore new HEA-type superconductors and investigate the relationship between the mixing entropy and superconductivity of HEA-type compounds.

Superconductivity in Se-doped La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex with a Bi2Pb2Ch4-type thick conducting layer

La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 is a layered Bi-based oxychalcogenide with a thick four-layer-type conducting layer. Although La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 is a structural analogue of La2O2Bi3AgS6, which is a superconductor, insulating behavior has been observed in La2O2Bi2Pb2S6 at low temperatures, and no superconductivity has been reported. Herein, we demonstrate superconductivity in La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex via partial substitution of Se in the S sites. Owing to the Se doping, the normal state electrical resistivity of La2O2Bi2Pb2S6-xSex at low temperatures was dramatically suppressed, and superconductivity was observed at a transition temperature (Tc) of 1.15 K for x = 0.5. Tc increased with increasing Se concentration: Tc = 1.9 K for x = 1.0. The emergence of metallicity and superconductivity was explained via in-plane chemical pressure effects that can suppress local disorder and carrier localization, which are commonly observed in two-layer-type BiS2-based systems.

Bulk Superconductivity Induced by In-plane Chemical Pressure Effect in Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex

We have investigated Se substitution effect to superconductivity of an optimally-doped BiS2-based superconductor Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2. Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1 were synthesized. With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With increasing Se concentration, characteristics of electrical resistivity changes from semiconducting-like to metallic, suggesting that the emergence of bulk superconductivity is linked with the enhanced metallicity. A superconductivity phase diagram of the Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex superconductor is established. Temperature dependences of electrical resistivity show an anomalous two-step transition under high magnetic fields. Hence, the resistivity data are analyzed with assuming in-plane anisotropy of upper critical field.

Specific Heat and Electrical Transport Properties of Sn0.8Ag0.2Te Superconductor

Sn0.8Ag0.2Te is a new superconductor with Tc ~ 2.4 K. The superconducting properties of Sn0.8Ag0.2Te have been investigated by specific heat measurements under magnetic fields. Bulk nature of superconductivity was confirmed from the amplitude of the specific heat jump at the superconducting transition, and the amplitude is consistent with fully-gapped superconductivity. Upper critical field was estimated from specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements under magnetic fields. The Hall coefficient was positive, suggesting that the Ag acts as a p-type dopant in Sn0.8Ag0.2Te.

Effect of Geomagnetism on 101Ru Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurements of CeRu2

We performed 101Ru nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the s-wave superconductor CeRu2 and found oscillatory behavior in the spin-echo amplitude at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions but not at the +-3/2 <-> +-5/2 transitions. The modulation disappears in the superconducting state or in a magnetic shield, which implies a geomagnetic field effect. Our results indicate that the NQR spin-echo decay curve at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions is sensitive to a weak magnetic field.

Pronounced - Log T Divergence in Specific Heat of Nonmetallic CeOBiS$_2$: A Mother Phase of BiS$_2$-Based Superconductor

The low-temperature properties of CeOBiS$_2$ single crystals are studied by electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Ce 4f -electrons are found to be in a well-localized state split by crystalline-electric-field (CEF) effects. The CEF ground state is a pure $J_z$ = $\pm$ 1/2 doublet, and excited doublets are located far above. At low temperatures in zero field, we observe pronounced $-\log T$ divergence in the specific heat, revealing the presence of quantum critical fluctuations of 4f magnetic moments near a quantum critical point (QCP). Considering that CeOBiS$_2$ is a nonmetal, this phenomenon cannot be attributed to the competition between Kondo and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions as in numerous f-electron-based strongly correlated metals, indicating an unconventional mechanism. We suggest that CeOBiS$_2$ is the first material found to be located at a QCP among geometrically frustrated nonmetallic magnets.

Possible Existence of Partially Disordered Sm Ions in Magnetically Ordered State of Ising Magnet SmPt2Si2: a Single Crystal Study

We have succeeded in growing single crystals of SmPt2Si2 and have performed electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements. The magnetic susceptibility shows that SmPt2Si2 is an Ising magnet with the crystalline-electric-field ground state of Jz=+-3/2. We have found the existence of two magnetically ordered states, i.e., an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered phase (I) setting in at TN=5.1 K and a field-induced magnetization plateau phase (II). In the phase I, unlike the usual AFM states, a pronounced Curie-Weiss contribution remains in magnetic susceptibility, indicating the existence of "partially disordered" Sm ions. Largely enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient (350 mJ/K2mol) in the phase I can be attributed to formation of Kondo sublattice with heavy quasiparticles in the partially disordered Sm ions. These findings may reflect substantial magnetic frustrations inherent in SmPt2Si2.

Pressure-induced ferromagnetism with strong Ising-type anisotropy in YbCu$_2$Si$_2$

We report dc magnetic measurements on YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ at pressures above 10 GPa using a miniature ceramic anvil cell. YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ shows a pressure-induced transition from the non-magnetic to a magnetic phase at 8 GPa. We find a spontaneous dc magnetization in the pressure-induced phase above 9.4 GPa. The pressure dependence of the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C and the spontaneous magnetic moment m_0 at 2.0 K have been determined. The value of m_0 in the present macroscopic measurement is less than half of that determined via Mossbauer experiment. The difference may be attributed to spatial phase separation between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. This separation suggests that the pressure-induced phase boundary between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states is of first order. Further, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in the pressure-induced ferromagnetic state. The effect of pressure on the magnetization with magnetic field along the magnetic easy $c$-axis is much larger than for field along the hard $a$-axis in the tetragonal structure. The pressure-induced phase has strong Ising-type uniaxial anisotropy, consistent with the two crystal electric field (CEF) models proposed for YbCu$_2$Si$_2$.

Unconventional critical scaling of magnetization in uranium ferromagnetic superconductors UGe$_2$ and URhGe

We report a dc magnetization study of the critical phenomenon around the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C in high-quality single crystals of uranium ferromagnetic superconductors UGe2 and URhGe. The critical exponents, beta for the temperature dependence of the magnetization below T_C, gamma for the magnetic susceptibility, and delta for the magnetic isothermal at T_C have been determined with a modified Arrott plot, a Kouvel-Fisher plot, and the scaling analysis. Magnetization in the ferromagnetic state has strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the two compounds. However, the universality class of the critical phenomena do not belong to the three dimensional (3D) Ising system. Although the values of beta in UGe2 and URhGe are close to those in the 3D magnets, the values of gamma are close to unity, that expected from the mean field theory. Similar critical exponents have been reported previously for the 3D Ising ferromagnet UIr where superconductivity appears under high pressure. The critical behavior may be limited to a very narrow Ginzburg critical region of 1 mK because of the strong itinerant character of the 5f electrons in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe where the mean field behavior of the magnetization has been reported. The unconventional critical scaling of magnetization in UGe2, URhGe and UIr cannot be explained via previous approaches to critical phenomena. The ferromagnetic correlation between the 5f electrons differs from that in the 3D Ising system and this difference may be a key point for the understanding of the ferromagnetism where superconductivity emerges.

Field-induced Phenomena in Ferromagnetic Superconductors UCoGe and URhGe

We review our recent studies on ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, where the spin-triplet state with the so-called equal spin pairing is realized. We focus on experimental results of URhGe and UCoGe in which the superconductivity occurs already at ambient pressure. The huge upper critical field Hc2 on UCoGe for the field along the hard magnetization axis (b-axis) is confirmed by the AC susceptibility measurements by the fine tuning of field angle. Contrary to the huge Hc2 along the hard-magnetization axis, Hc2 along the easy-magnetization axis (c-axis) is relatively small in value. However, the initial slope of Hc2, namely dHc2/dT (H -> 0) both in UCoGe and in URhGe indicates the large value, which can be explained by the magnetic domain effect detected in the magnetization measurements. The specific heat measurements using a high quality single crystal of UCoGe demonstrate the bulk superconductivity, which is extended under magnetic field for the field along c-axis.

High-Field Fermi Surface Properties in the Low Carrier Heavy Fermion Compound URu2Si2

We performed the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) experiments of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 30mK. All main SdH branches named alpha, beta and gamma were observed for all the measured field-directions (H // [001] -> [100], [100] -> [110] and [001] -> [110]), indicating that these are attributed to the closed Fermi surfaces with nearly spherical shapes. Anomalous split of branch alpha was detected for the field along the basal plane, and the split immediately disappears by tilting the field to [001] direction, implying a fingerprint of the hidden order state. High field experiments reveal the complicated field-dependence of the SdH frequencies and the cyclotron masses due to the Zeeman spin-splitting associated with the Fermi surface reconstruction in the hidden order state with small carrier numbers. A new SdH branch named omega with large cyclotron mass of 25m0 was detected at high fields above 23T close to the hidden order instabilities.

Details of Sample Dependence and Transport Properties of URu2Si2

Resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed in the low carrier unconventional superconductor URu2Si2 on various samples with very different qualities. The superconducting transition temperature (TSC) and the hidden order transition temperature (THO) of these crystals were evaluated as a function of the residual resistivity ratio (RRR). In high quality single crystals the resistivity does not seem to follow a T2 dependence above TSC, indicating that the Fermi liquid regime is restricted to low temperatures. However, an analysis of the isothermal longitudinal magnetoresistivity points out that the T2 dependence may be "spoiled" by residual inhomogeneous superconducting contribution. We discuss a possible scenario concerning the distribution of TSC related with the fact that the hidden order phase is very sensitive to the pressure inhomogeneity.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Endpoint in UCoAl

Resistivity and magnetostriction measurements were performed at high magnetic fields and under pressure on UCoAl. At ambient pressure, the 1st order metamagnetic transition at H_m ~ 0.7 T from the paramagnetic ground state to the field-induced ferromagnetic state changes to a crossover at finite temperature T_0 ~11 K. With increasing pressure, H_m linearly increases, while T_0 decreases and is suppressed at the quantum critical endpoint (QCEP, P_QCEP ~ 1.5 GPa, H_m ~ 7 T). At higher pressure, the value of H_m identified as a crossover continuously increases, while a new anomaly appears above P_QCEP at higher field H* in resistivity measurements. The field dependence of the effective mass (m*) obtained by resistivity and specific heat measurements exhibits a step-like drop at H_m at ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, it gradually changes into a peak structure and a sharp enhancement of m* is observed near the QCEP. Above P_QCEP, the enhancement of m* is reduced, and a broad plateau is found between H_m and H*. We compare our results on UCoAl with those of the ferromagnetic superconductor UGe2 and the itinerant metamagnetic ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7.

Magnetic Field and Pressure Phase Diagrams of Uranium Heavy-Fermion Compound U$_2$Zn$_{17}$

We have performed magnetization measurements at high magnetic fields of up to 53 T on single crystals of a uranium heavy-fermion compound U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ grown by the Bridgman method. In the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 9.7 K, a metamagnetic transition is found at $H_c$ $\simeq$ 32 T for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction ($a$-axis). The magnetic phase diagram for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction is given. The magnetization curve shows a nonlinear increase at $H_m$ $\simeq$ 35 T in the paramagnetic state above $T_{\rm N}$ up to a characteristic temperature $T_{χ{\rm max}}$ where the magnetic susceptibility or electrical resistivity shows a maximum value. This metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization at $H_m$ is discussed in comparison with the metamagnetic magnetism of the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt$_3$, URu$_2$Si$_2$, and UPd$_2$Al$_3$. We have also carried out high-pressure resistivity measurement on U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ using a diamond anvil cell up to 8.7 GPa. Noble gas argon was used as a pressure-transmitting medium to ensure a good hydrostatic environment. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ is almost pressure-independent up to 4.7 GPa and starts to increase in the higher-pressure region. The pressure dependences of the coefficient of the $T^2$ term in the electrical resistivity $A$, the antiferromagnetic gap $Δ$, and the characteristic temperature $T_{ρ{\rm max}}$ are discussed. It is found that the effect of pressure on the electronic states in U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ is weak compared with those in the other heavy fermion compounds.

Pressure Evolution of the Magnetic Field induced Ferromagnetic Fluctuation through the Pseudo-Metamagnetism of CeRu2Si2

Resistivity measurements performed under pressure in the paramagnetic ground state of CeRu2Si2 are reported. They demonstrate that the relative change of effective mass through the pseudo metamagnetic transition is invariant under pressure. The results are compared with the first order metamagnetic transition due to the antiferromagnetism of Ce0.9La0.1Ru2Si2 which corresponds to the "negative" pressure of CeRu2Si2 by volume expansion. Finally, we describe the link between the spin-depairing of quasiparticles on CeRu2Si2 and that of Cooper pairs on the unconventional heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5.

Properties of Ferromagnetic Superconductors

Thanks to the discovery in the last decade of three uranium ferromagnetic superconductors, UGe2, URhGe and UCoGe, the fascinating aspects of the interplay between the triplet state of Cooper pairing and ferromagnetism have emerged. Furthermore, as the ferromagnetic properties in the normal state are quite different with respect to the proximity of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic instabilities, the feedback with the coexistence of superconductivity gives rise to quite different boundaries in pressure and magnetic field. Special attention is given on the location of the materials with respect to the tricriticality and on the reinforcement of superconductivity in a transverse field response with respect to the direction of the ferromagnetic sublattice magnetization. The other facts of the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity is briefly mentioned.

Strong Longitudinal Magnetic Fluctuations near Critical End Point in UCoAl: A ^59Co-NMR Study

We report ^59Co-NMR measurements in UCoAl where a metamagnetism occurs due to enhancement of ferromagnetism by magnetic field. The metamagnetic transition from a paramagnetic (PM) state to a ferromagnetic state is a first order transition at low temperatures, but it changes to a crossover at high temperatures on crossing the critical end pint (CEP) at T_CEP ~ 12 K. The contrasting behavior between the relaxation rates 1/T_1 and 1/T_2 suggests that the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation of U moment is strongly enhanced especially near the CEP. A wide diffusion of the fluctuation from the CEP can be confirmed even in the PM state where the magnetic transition does not occur.

First Observation of Quantum Oscillations in the Ferromagnetic Superconductor UCoGe

We succeeded in growing high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe and measured the magnetoresistance at fields up to 34T. The Shubnikov-de Haas signal was observed for the first time in a U-111 system (UTGe, UTSi, T: transition metal). A small pocket Fermi surface (F~1kT) with large cyclotron effective mass 25m0 was detected at high fields above 22T, implying that UCoGe is a low carrier system accompanyed with heavy quasi-particles. The observed frequency decreases with increasing fields, indicating that the volume of detected Fermi surface changes nonlinearly with field. The cyclotron mass also decreases, which is consistent with the decrease of the A coefficient of resistivity.

Superconductivity Reinforced by Magnetic Field and the Magnetic Instability in Uranium Ferromagnets

We review our recent results on ferromagnetic superconductors, URhGe and UCoGe. High quality single crystals of both compounds were successfully grown. The specific heat shows a clear jump related to the superconducting transition in UCoGe. The finite values of C/T at 0K are discussed in terms of the self-induced vortex state and the value of the ordered moment. With increasing fields for H // b-axis in URhGe, the jump of thermal expansion increases and shifts to lower temperature. The re-entrant and S-shaped superconducting phases for URhGe and UCoGe respectively are explained by the unusual field dependence of the effective mass, which is induced by the ferromagnetic instability when the field is applied along the hard magnetization b-axis. The magnetic fluctuations are very sensitive to the field orientation. This is reflected in the Hc2 and the anisotropy of the effective mass.

Extremely Large and Anisotropic Upper Critical Field and the Ferromagnetic Instability in UCoGe

Magnetoresistivity measurements with fine tuning of the field direction on high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe show anomalous anisotropy of the upper critical field H_c2. H_c2 for H // b-axis (H_c2^b) in the orthorhombic crystal structure is strongly enhanced with decreasing temperature with an S-shape and reaches nearly 20 T at 0 K. The temperature dependence of H_c2^a shows upward curvature with a low temperature value exceeding 30 T, while H_c2^c at 0 K is very small (~ 0.6 T). Contrary to conventional ferromagnets, the decrease of the Curie temperature with increasing field for H // b-axis marked by an enhancement of the effective mass of the conduction electrons appears to be the origin of the S-shaped H_c2^b curve. These results indicate that the field-induced ferromagnetic instability or magnetic quantum criticality reinforces superconductivity.

Thermodynamic Studies on Non Centrosymmetric Superconductors by AC Calorimetry under High Pressures

We investigated the non centrosymmetric superconductors CePt$_3$Si and UIr by the ac heat capacity measurement under pressures. We determined the pressure phase diagrams of these compounds. In CePt$_3$Si, the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 2.2 K decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 0.6 GPa. On the other hand, the superconducting phase exists in a wider pressure region from ambient pressure to $P_{\rm AF}$ $\simeq$ 1.5 GPa. The phase diagram of CePt$_3$Si is very unique and has never been reported before for other heavy fermion superconductors. In UIr, the heat capacity shows an anomaly at the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C1}$ = 46 K at ambient pressure, and the heat capacity anomaly shifts to lower temperatures with increasing pressure. The present pressure dependence of $T_{\rm C1}$ was consistent with the previous studies by the resistivity and magnetization measurements. Previous ac magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements suggested the existence of three ferromagnetic phases, FM1-3. $C_{\rm ac}$ shows a bending structure at 1.98, 2.21, and 2.40 GPa .The temperatures where these anomalies are observed are close to the phase boundary of the FM3 phase.
