Twisted multilayer nodal superconductors

Twisted bilayers of nodal superconductors were recently proposed as a promising platform to host superconducting phases that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. Here we extend this analysis to twisted multilayers, focusing on two high-symmetry stackings with alternating (±θ\pm θ) and constant (θθ) twist angles. In analogy to alternating-twist multilayer graphene, the former can be mapped to twisted bilayers with renormalized interlayer couplings, along with a remnant gapless monolayer when the number of layers LL is odd. In contrast, the latter exhibits physics beyond twisted bilayers, including the occurrence of `magic angles' characterized by cubic band crossings when Lmod  4=3L \mod 4 = 3. Owing to their power-law divergent density of states, such multilayers are highly susceptible to secondary instabilities. Within a BCS mean-field theory, defined in the continuum and on a lattice, we find that both stackings host chiral topological superconductivity in extended regions of their phase diagrams.

Josephson effects in twisted cuprate bilayers

Twisted bilayers of high-TcT_c cuprate superconductors have been argued to form topological phases with spontaneously broken time reversal symmetry T{\cal T} for certain twist angles. With the goal of helping to identify unambiguous signatures of these topological phases in transport experiments, we theoretically investigate a suite of Josephson phenomena between twisted layers. We find an unusual non-monotonic temperature dependence of the critical current at intermediate twist angles which we attribute to the unconventional sign structure of the dd-wave order parameter. The onset of the T{\cal T}-broken phase near 45∘45^\circ twist is marked by a crossover from the conventional 2π2π-periodic Josephson relation J(φ)≃Jcsin⁡φJ(φ)\simeq J_c\sinφ to a ππ-periodic function as the single-pair tunneling becomes dominated by a second order process that involves two Cooper pairs. Despite this fundamental change, the critical current remains a smooth function of the twist angle θθ and temperature TT implying that a measurement of JcJ_c alone will not be a litmus test for the T{\cal T}-broken phase. To obtain clear signatures of the T{\cal T}-broken phase one must measure JcJ_c in the presence of an applied magnetic field or radio-frequency drive, where the resulting Fraunhofer patterns and Shapiro steps are altered in a characteristic manner. We discuss these results in light of recent experiments on twisted bilayers of the high-TcT_c cuprate superconductor Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+δ}.

Chiral pp-wave superconductivity in a twisted array of proximitized quantum wires

A superconductor with px+ipyp_x+ip_y order has long fascinated the physics community because vortex defects in such a system host Majorana zero modes. Here we propose a simple construction of a chiral superconductor using proximitized quantum wires and twist angle engineering as basic ingredients. We show that a weakly coupled parallel array of such wires forms a gapless pp-wave superconductor. Two such arrays, stacked on top of one another with a twist angle close to 90∘90^\circ, spontaneously break time reversal symmetry and form a robust, fully gapped px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductor. We map out topological phases of the proposed system, demonstrate existence of Majorana zero modes in vortices, and discuss prospects for experimental realization.

High-temperature topological superconductivity in twisted double layer copper oxides

A great variety of novel phenomena occur when two-dimensional materials, such as graphene or transition metal dichalcogenides, are assembled into bilayers with a twist between individual layers. As a new application of this paradigm, we consider structures composed of two monolayer-thin dd-wave superconductors with a twist angle θθ that can be realized by mechanically exfoliating van der Waals-bonded high-TcT_c copper oxide materials, such as Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+δ}. On the basis of symmetry arguments and detailed microscopic modelling, we predict that for a range of twist angles in the vicinity of 45o45^{\rm o}, such bilayers form a robust, fully gapped topological phase with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry and protected chiral Majorana edge modes. When θ≈45oθ\approx 45^{\rm o}, the topological phase sets in at temperatures close to the bulk Tc≃90T_c\simeq 90 K, thus furnishing a long sought realization of a true high-temperature topological superconductor.

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma chain and emergent SU(2) symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra ``ΓΓ-term", using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)1_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)1_1 predictions. A modified nonabelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent ``partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an Oh→D4O_h\rightarrow D_4 spontaneous symmetry breaking.
