Families of two-dimensional Coulomb gases on an ellipse: correlation functions and universality

We investigate a one-parameter family of Coulomb gases in two dimensions, which are confined to an ellipse, due to a hard wall constraint, and are subject to an additional external potential. At inverse temperature $β=2$ we can use the technique of planar orthogonal polynomials, borrowed from random matrix theory, to explicitly determine all $k$-point correlation functions for a fixed number of particles $N$. These are given by the determinant of the kernel of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, which in our case are the Gegenbauer polynomials, or a subset of the asymmetric Jacobi polynomials, depending on the choice of external potential, as shown in a companion paper recently published by three of the authors. In the rotationally invariant case, when the ellipse becomes the unit disc, our findings agree with that of the ensemble of truncated unitary random matrices. The thermodynamical large-$N$ limit is investigated in the local scaling regime in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum at weak and strong non-Hermiticity. We find new universality classes in these limits and recover the sine- and Bessel-kernel in the Hermitian limit. The limiting global correlation functions of particles in the interior of the ellipse are more difficult to obtain but found in the special cases corresponding to the Chebyshev polynomials.

Universal microscopic correlation functions for products of truncated unitary matrices

We investigate the spectral properties of the product of $M$ complex non-Hermitian random matrices that are obtained by removing $L$ rows and columns of larger unitary random matrices uniformly distributed on the group ${\rm U}(N+L)$. Such matrices are called truncated unitary matrices or random contractions. We first derive the joint probability distribution for the eigenvalues of the product matrix for fixed $N,\ L$, and $M$, given by a standard determinantal point process in the complex plane. The weight however is non-standard and can be expressed in terms of the Meijer G-function. The explicit knowledge of all eigenvalue correlation functions and the corresponding kernel allows us to take various large $N$ (and $L$) limits at fixed $M$. At strong non-unitarity, with $L/N$ finite, the eigenvalues condense on a domain inside the unit circle. At the edge and in the bulk we find the same universal microscopic kernel as for a single complex non-Hermitian matrix from the Ginibre ensemble. At the origin we find the same new universality classes labelled by $M$ as for the product of $M$ matrices from the Ginibre ensemble. Keeping a fixed size of truncation, $L$, when $N$ goes to infinity leads to weak non-unitarity, with most eigenvalues on the unit circle as for unitary matrices. Here we find a new microscopic edge kernel that generalizes the known results for M=1. We briefly comment on the case when each product matrix results from a truncation of different size $L_j$.

Spectral Density of Complex Networks with Two Species of Nodes

The adjacency and Laplacian matrices of complex networks with two species of nodes are studied and the spectral density is evaluated by using the replica method in statistical physics. The network nodes are classified into two species (A and B) and the connections are made only between the nodes of different species. A static model of such bipartite networks with power law degree distributions is introduced by applying Goh, Kahng and Kim's method to construct scale free networks. As a result, the spectral density is shown to obey a power law in the limit of large mean degree.

Random Matrix Theory for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac Operator and the chGUE-GUE Transition

We introduce a random two-matrix model interpolating between a chiral Hermitian (2n+nu)x(2n+nu) matrix and a second Hermitian matrix without symmetries. These are taken from the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (chGUE) and Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), respectively. In the microscopic large-n limit in the vicinity of the chGUE (which we denote by weakly non-chiral limit) this theory is in one to one correspondence to the partition function of Wilson chiral perturbation theory in the epsilon regime, such as the related two matrix-model previously introduced in refs. [20,21]. For a generic number of flavours and rectangular block matrices in the chGUE part we derive an eigenvalue representation for the partition function displaying a Pfaffian structure. In the quenched case with nu=0,1 we derive all spectral correlations functions in our model for finite-n, given in terms of skew-orthogonal polynomials. The latter are expressed as Gaussian integrals over standard Laguerre polynomials. In the weakly non-chiral microscopic limit this yields all corresponding quenched eigenvalue correlation functions of the Hermitian Wilson operator.

Chaotic Transport in the Symmetry Crossover Regime with a Spin-orbit Interaction

We study a chaotic quantum transport in the presence of a weak spin-orbit interaction. Our theory covers the whole symmetry crossover regime between time-reversal invariant systems with and without a spin-orbit interaction. This situation is experimentally realizable when the spin-orbit interaction is controlled in a conductor by applying an electric field. We utilize a semiclassical approach which has recently been developed. In this approach, the non-Abelian nature of the spin diffusion along a classical trajectory plays a crucial role. New analytical expressions with one crossover parameter are semiclassically derived for the average conductance, conductance variance and shot noise. Moreover numerical results on a random matrix model describing the crossover from the GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) to the GSE (Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble) are compared with the semiclassical expressions.

Semiclassical Theory for Universality in Quantum Chaos with Symmetry Crossover

We address the quantum-classical correspondence for chaotic systems with a crossover between symmetry classes. We consider the energy level statistics of a classically chaotic system in a weak magnetic field. The generating function of spectral correlations is calculated by using the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory. An explicit calculation up to the second order, including the non-oscillatory and oscillatory terms, agrees with the prediction of random matrix theory. Formal expressions of the higher order terms are also presented. The nonlinear sigma (NLS) model of random matrix theory, in the variant of the Bosonic replica trick, is also analyzed for the crossover between the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble and Gaussian unitary ensemble. The diagrammatic expansion of the NLS model is interpreted in terms of the periodic orbit theory.

The n-level spectral correlations for chaotic systems

We study the $n$-level spectral correlation functions of classically chaotic quantum systems without time-reversal symmetry. According to Bohigas, Giannoni and Schmit's universality conjecture, it is expected that the correlation functions are in agreement with the prediction of the Circular Unitary Ensemble (CUE) of random matrices. A semiclassical resummation formalism allows us to express the correlation functions as sums over pseudo-orbits. Using an extended version of the diagonal approximation on the pseudo-orbit sums, we derive the $n$-level correlation functions identical to the $n \times n$ determinantal correlation functions of the CUE.

Determinantal Correlations for Classical Projection Processes

Recent applications in queuing theory and statistical mechanics have isolated the process formed by the eigenvalues of successive minors of the GUE. Analogous eigenvalue processes, formed in general from the eigenvalues of nested sequences of matrices resulting from random corank 1 projections of classical random matrix ensembles, are identified for the LUE and JUE. The correlations for all these processes can be computed in a unified way. The resulting expressions can then be analyzed in various scaling limits. At the soft edge, with the rank of the minors differing by an amount proportional to $N^{2/3}$, the scaled correlations coincide with those known from the soft edge scaling of the Dyson Brownian motion model.

Skew orthogonal polynomials and the partly symmetric real Ginibre ensemble

The partly symmetric real Ginibre ensemble consists of matrices formed as linear combinations of real symmetric and real anti-symmetric Gaussian random matrices. Such matrices typically have both real and complex eigenvalues. For a fixed number of real eigenvalues, an earlier work has given the explicit form of the joint eigenvalue probability density function. We use this to derive a Pfaffian formula for the corresponding summed up generalized partition function. This Pfaffian formula allows the probability that there are exactly $k$ eigenvalues to be written as a determinant with explicit entries. It can be used too to give the explicit form of the correlation functions, provided certain skew orthogonal polynomials are computed. This task is accomplished in terms of Hermite polynomials, and allows us to proceed to analyze various scaling limits of the correlations, including that in which the matrices are only weakly non-symmetric.

Eigenvalue statistics of the real Ginibre ensemble

The real Ginibre ensemble consists of random $N \times N$ matrices formed from i.i.d. standard Gaussian entries. By using the method of skew orthogonal polynomials, the general $n$-point correlations for the real eigenvalues, and for the complex eigenvalues, are given as $n \times n$ Pfaffians with explicit entries. A computationally tractable formula for the cumulative probability density of the largest real eigenvalue is presented. This is relevant to May's stability analysis of biological webs.

Spectral Density of Sparse Sample Covariance Matrices

Applying the replica method of statistical mechanics, we evaluate the eigenvalue density of the large random matrix (sample covariance matrix) of the form $J = A^{\rm T} A$, where $A$ is an $M \times N$ real sparse random matrix. The difference from a dense random matrix is the most significant in the tail region of the spectrum. We compare the results of several approximation schemes, focusing on the behavior in the tail region.

Dynamical Correlations for Circular Ensembles of Random Matrices

Circular Brownian motion models of random matrices were introduced by Dyson and describe the parametric eigenparameter correlations of unitary random matrices. For symmetric unitary, self-dual quaternion unitary and an analogue of antisymmetric hermitian matrix initial conditions, Brownian dynamics toward the unitary symmetry is analyzed. The dynamical correlation functions of arbitrary number of Brownian particles at arbitrary number of times are shown to be written in the forms of quaternion determinants, similarly as in the case of hermitian random matrix models.
