Hard Edge Statistics of Products of Pólya Ensembles and Shifted GUE's

Very recently, we have shown how the harmonic analysis approach can be modified to deal with products of general Hermitian and complex random matrices at finite matrix dimension. In the present work, we consider the particular product of a multiplicative Pólya ensemble on the complex square matrices and a Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) shifted by a constant multiplicative of the identity. The shift shall show that the limiting hard edge statistics of the product matrix is weakly dependent on the local spectral statistics of the GUE, but depends more on the global statistics via its Stieltjes transform (Green function). Under rather mild conditions for the Pólya ensemble, we prove formulas for the hard edge kernel of the singular value statistics of the Pólya ensemble alone and the product matrix to highlight their very close similarity. Due to these observations, we even propose a conjecture for the hard edge statistics of a multiplicative Pólya ensemble on the complex matrices and a polynomial ensemble on the Hermitian matrices.

Volume-law entanglement entropy of typical pure quantum states

The entanglement entropy of subsystems of typical eigenstates of quantum many-body Hamiltonians has been recently conjectured to be a diagnostic of quantum chaos and integrability. In quantum chaotic systems it has been found to behave as in typical pure states, while in integrable systems it has been found to behave as in typical pure Gaussian states. In this tutorial, we provide a pedagogical introduction to known results about the entanglement entropy of subsystems of typical pure states and of typical pure Gaussian states. They both exhibit a leading term that scales with the volume of the subsystem, when smaller than one half of the volume of the system, but the prefactor of the volume law is fundamentally different. It is constant (and maximal) for typical pure states, and it depends on the ratio between the volume of the subsystem and of the entire system for typical pure Gaussian states. Since particle-number conservation plays an important role in many physical Hamiltonians, we discuss its effect on typical pure states and on typical pure Gaussian states. We prove that while the behavior of the leading volume-law terms does not change qualitatively, the nature of the subleading terms can change. In particular, subleading corrections can appear that depend on the square root of the volume of the subsystem. We unveil the origin of those corrections. Finally, we discuss the connection between the entanglement entropy of typical pure states and analytical results obtained in the context of random matrix theory, as well as numerical results obtained for physical Hamiltonians.

Universal eigenvector correlations in quaternionic Ginibre ensembles

Non-Hermitian random matrices enjoy non-trivial correlations in the statistics of their eigenvectors. We study the overlap among left and right eigenvectors in Ginibre ensembles with quaternion valued Gaussian matrix elements. This concept was introduced by Chalker and Mehlig in the complex Ginibre ensemble. Using a Schur decomposition, for harmonic potentials we can express the overlap in terms of complex eigenvalues only, coming in conjugate pairs in this symmetry class. Its expectation value leads to a Pfaffian determinant, for which we explicitly compute the matrix elements for the induced Ginibre ensemble with $2α$ zero eigenvalues, for finite matrix size $N$. In the macroscopic large-$N$ limit in the bulk of the spectrum we recover the limiting expressions of the complex Ginibre ensemble for the diagonal and off-diagonal overlap, which are thus universal.

Eigenvalue and Eigenvector Statistics in Time Series Analysis

The study of correlated time-series is ubiquitous in statistical analysis, and the matrix decomposition of the cross-correlations between time series is a universal tool to extract the principal patterns of behavior in a wide range of complex systems. Despite this fact, no general result is known for the statistics of eigenvectors of the cross-correlations of correlated time-series. Here we use supersymmetric theory to provide novel analytical results that will serve as a benchmark for the study of correlated signals for a vast community of researchers.

Families of two-dimensional Coulomb gases on an ellipse: correlation functions and universality

We investigate a one-parameter family of Coulomb gases in two dimensions, which are confined to an ellipse, due to a hard wall constraint, and are subject to an additional external potential. At inverse temperature $β=2$ we can use the technique of planar orthogonal polynomials, borrowed from random matrix theory, to explicitly determine all $k$-point correlation functions for a fixed number of particles $N$. These are given by the determinant of the kernel of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, which in our case are the Gegenbauer polynomials, or a subset of the asymmetric Jacobi polynomials, depending on the choice of external potential, as shown in a companion paper recently published by three of the authors. In the rotationally invariant case, when the ellipse becomes the unit disc, our findings agree with that of the ensemble of truncated unitary random matrices. The thermodynamical large-$N$ limit is investigated in the local scaling regime in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum at weak and strong non-Hermiticity. We find new universality classes in these limits and recover the sine- and Bessel-kernel in the Hermitian limit. The limiting global correlation functions of particles in the interior of the ellipse are more difficult to obtain but found in the special cases corresponding to the Chebyshev polynomials.

Multiplicative Convolution of Real Asymmetric and Real Antisymmetric Matrices

The singular values of products of standard complex Gaussian random matrices, or sub-blocks of Haar distributed unitary matrices, have the property that their probability distribution has an explicit, structured form referred to as a polynomial ensemble. It is furthermore the case that the corresponding bi-orthogonal system can be determined in terms of Meijer G-functions, and the correlation kernel given as an explicit double contour integral. It has recently been shown that the Hermitised product $X_M \cdots X_2 X_1A X_1^T X_2^T \cdots X_M^T$, where each $X_i$ is a standard real complex Gaussian matrix, and $A$ is real anti-symmetric shares exhibits analogous properties. Here we use the theory of spherical functions and transforms to present a theory which, for even dimensions, includes these properties of the latter product as a special case. As an example we show that the theory also allows for a treatment of this class of Hermitised product when the $X_i$ are chosen as sub-blocks of Haar distributed real orthogonal matrices.

Spectral correlation functions of the sum of two independent complex Wishart matrices with unequal covariances

We compute the spectral statistics of the sum H of two independent complex Wishart matrices, each of which is correlated with a different covariance matrix. Random matrix theory enjoys many applications including sums and products of random matrices. Typically ensembles with correlations among the matrix elements are much more difficult to solve. Using a combination of supersymmetry, superbosonisation and bi-orthogonal functions we are able to determine all spectral k-point density correlation functions of H for arbitrary matrix size N. In the half-degenerate case, when one of the covariance matrices is proportional to the identity, the recent results by Kumar for the joint eigenvalue distribution of H serve as our starting point. In this case the ensemble has a bi-orthogonal structure and we explicitly determine its kernel, providing its exact solution for finite N. The kernel follows from computing the expectation value of a single characteristic polynomial. In the general non-degenerate case the generating function for the k-point resolvent is determined from a supersymmetric evaluation of the expectation value of k ratios of characteristic polynomials. Numerical simulations illustrate our findings for the spectral density at finite N and we also give indications how to do the asymptotic large-N analysis.

Dirac Spectrum of the Wilson Dirac Operator for QCD with Two Colors

We study the lattice artefacts of the Wilson Dirac operator for QCD with two colors and fermions in the fundamental representation from the viewpoint of chiral perturbation theory. These effects are studied with the help of the following spectral observables: the level density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator, the distribution of chirality over the real eigenvalues, and the chiral condensate for the quenched as well as for the unquenched theory. We provide analytical expressions for all these quantities. Moreover we derive constraints for the level density of the real eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator and the number of additional real modes. The latter is a good measure for the strength of lattice artefacts. All computations are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations of the corresponding random matrix theory which agrees with chiral perturbation theory of two color QCD with Wilson fermions.

Discretization effects in $N_c=2$ QCD and Random Matrix Theory

We summarize the analytical solution of the Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator of $N_c=2$ QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation. Results have been obtained for the quenched microscopic spectral density, the distribution of the chiralities over the real modes and the chiral condensate. The analytical results are compared with results from a Monte Carlo simulation of the corresponding Random Matrix Theory.

Phase Diagram of Dynamical Twisted Mass Wilson Fermions at Finite Isospin Chemical Potential

We consider the phase diagram of twisted mass Wilson fermions of two-flavor QCD in the parameter space of the quark mass, the isospin chemical potential, the twist angle and the lattice spacing. This work extends earlier studies in the continuum and those at zero chemical potential. We evaluate the phase diagram as well as the spectrum of the (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons using the chiral Lagrangian for twisted mass Wilson fermions at non-zero isospin chemical potential. The phases are obtained from a mean field analysis. At zero twist angle we find that already an infinitesimal isospin chemical potential destroys the Aoki phase. The reason is that in this phase we have massless Goldstone bosons with a non-zero isospin charge. At finite twist angle only two different phases are present, one phase which is continuously connected to the Bose condensed phase at non-zero chemical potential and another phase which is continuously connected to the normal phase. For either zero or maximal twist the phase diagram is more complicated as the saddle point equations allow for more solutions.

The Correlated Jacobi and the Correlated Cauchy-Lorentz ensembles

We calculate the $k$-point generating function of the correlated Jacobi ensemble using supersymmetric methods. We use the result for complex matrices for $k=1$ to derive a closed-form expression for eigenvalue density. For real matrices we obtain the density in terms of a twofold integral that we evaluate numerically. For both expressions we find agreement when comparing with Monte Carlo simulations. Relations between these quantities for the Jacobi and the Cauchy-Lorentz ensemble are derived.

The Smallest Eigenvalue Distribution in the Real Wishart-Laguerre Ensemble with Even Topology

We consider rectangular random matrices of size $p\times n$ belonging to the real Wishart-Laguerre ensemble also known as the chiral Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This ensemble appears in many applications like QCD, mesoscopic physics, and time series analysis. We are particularly interested in the distribution of the smallest non-zero eigenvalue and the gap probability to find no eigenvalue in an interval $[0,t]$. While for odd topology $ν=n-p$ explicit closed results are known for finite and infinite matrix size, for even $ν>2$ only recursive expressions in $p$ are available. The smallest eigenvalue distribution as well as the gap probability for general even $ν$ is equivalent to expectation values of characteristic polynomials raised to a half-integer. The computation of such averages is done via a combination of skew-orthogonal polynomials and bosonisation methods. The results are given in terms of Pfaffian determinants both at finite $p$ and in the hard edge scaling limit ($p\to\infty$ and $ν$ fixed) for an arbitrary even topology $ν$. Numerical simulations for the correlated Wishart ensemble illustrate the universality of our results in this particular limit. These simulations point to a validity of the hard edge scaling limit beyond the invariant case.

Dirac Spectra of 2-dimensional QCD-like theories

We analyze Dirac spectra of two-dimensional QCD like theories both in the continuum and on the lattice and classify them according to random matrix theories sharing the same global symmetries. The classification is different from QCD in four dimensions because the anti-unitary symmetries do not commute with $γ_5$. Therefore in a chiral basis, the number of degrees of freedom per matrix element are not given by the Dyson index. Our predictions are confirmed by Dirac spectra from quenched lattice simulations for QCD with two or three colors with quarks in the fundamental representation as well as in the adjoint representation. The universality class of the spectra depends on the parity of the number of lattice points in each direction. Our results show an agreement with random matrix theory that is qualitatively similar to the agreement found for QCD in four dimensions. We discuss the implications for the Mermin-Wagner-Coleman theorem and put our results in the context of two-dimensional disordered systems.

Limiting Statistics of the Largest and Smallest Eigenvalues in the Correlated Wishart Model

The correlated Wishart model provides a standard tool for the analysis of correlations in a rich variety of systems. Although much is known for complex correlation matrices, the empirically much more important real case still poses substantial challenges. We put forward a new approach, which maps arbitrary statistical quantities, depending on invariants only, to invariant Hermitian matrix models. For completeness we also include the quaternion case and deal with all three cases in a unified way. As an important application, we study the statistics of the largest eigenvalue and its limiting distributions in the correlated Wishart model, because they help to estimate the behavior of large complex systems. We show that even for fully correlated Wishart ensembles, the Tracy-Widom distribution can be the limiting distribution of the largest as well as the smallest eigenvalue, provided that a certain scaling of the empirical eigenvalues holds.

Pizzetti formulae for Stiefel manifolds and applications

Pizzetti's formula explicitly shows the equivalence of the rotation invariant integration over a sphere and the action of rotation invariant differential operators. We generalize this idea to the integrals over real, complex, and quaternion Stiefel manifolds in a unifying way. In particular we propose a new way to calculate group integrals and try to uncover some algebraic structures which manifest themselves for some well-known cases like the Harish-Chandra integral. We apply a particular case of our formula to an Itzykson-Zuber integral for the coset SO(4)/[SO(2)xSO(2)]. This integral naturally appears in the calculation of the two-point correlation function in the transition of the statistics of the Poisson ensemble and the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble in random matrix theory.

Supersymmetry Method for Chiral Random Matrix Theory with Arbitrary Rotation Invariant Weights

In the last few years, the supersymmetry method was generalized to real-symmetric, Hermitean, and Hermitean self-dual random matrices drawn from ensembles invariant under the orthogonal, unitary, and unitary symplectic group, respectively. We extend this supersymmetry approach to chiral random matrix theory invariant under the three chiral unitary groups in a unifying way. Thereby we generalize a projection formula providing a direct link and, hence, a `short cut' between the probability density in ordinary space and the one in superspace. We emphasize that this point was one of the main problems and critiques of the supersymmetry method since only implicit dualities between ordinary and superspace were known before. As examples we apply this approach to the calculation of the supersymmetric analogue of a Lorentzian (Cauchy) ensemble and an ensemble with a quartic potential. Moreover we consider the partially quenched partition function of the three chiral Gaussian ensembles corresponding to four-dimensional continuum QCD. We identify a natural splitting of the chiral Lagrangian in its lowest order into a part of the physical mesons and a part associated to source terms generating the observables, e.g. the level density of the Dirac operator.

Universal distribution of Lyapunov exponents for products of Ginibre matrices

Starting from exact analytical results on singular values and complex eigenvalues of products of independent Gaussian complex random $N\times N$ matrices also called Ginibre ensemble we rederive the Lyapunov exponents for an infinite product. We show that for a large number $t$ of product matrices the distribution of each Lyapunov exponent is normal and compute its $t$-dependent variance as well as corrections in a $1/t$ expansion. Originally Lyapunov exponents are defined for singular values of the product matrix that represents a linear time evolution. Surprisingly a similar construction for the moduli of the complex eigenvalues yields the very same exponents and normal distributions to leading order. We discuss a general mechanism for $2\times 2$ matrices why the singular values and the radii of complex eigenvalues collapse onto the same value in the large-$t$ limit. Thereby we rederive Newman's triangular law which has a simple interpretation as the radial density of complex eigenvalues in the circular law and study the commutativity of the two limits $t\to\infty$ and $N\to\infty$ on the global and the local scale. As a mathematical byproduct we show that a particular asymptotic expansion of a Meijer G-function with large index leads to a Gaussian.

Universal microscopic correlation functions for products of truncated unitary matrices

We investigate the spectral properties of the product of $M$ complex non-Hermitian random matrices that are obtained by removing $L$ rows and columns of larger unitary random matrices uniformly distributed on the group ${\rm U}(N+L)$. Such matrices are called truncated unitary matrices or random contractions. We first derive the joint probability distribution for the eigenvalues of the product matrix for fixed $N,\ L$, and $M$, given by a standard determinantal point process in the complex plane. The weight however is non-standard and can be expressed in terms of the Meijer G-function. The explicit knowledge of all eigenvalue correlation functions and the corresponding kernel allows us to take various large $N$ (and $L$) limits at fixed $M$. At strong non-unitarity, with $L/N$ finite, the eigenvalues condense on a domain inside the unit circle. At the edge and in the bulk we find the same universal microscopic kernel as for a single complex non-Hermitian matrix from the Ginibre ensemble. At the origin we find the same new universality classes labelled by $M$ as for the product of $M$ matrices from the Ginibre ensemble. Keeping a fixed size of truncation, $L$, when $N$ goes to infinity leads to weak non-unitarity, with most eigenvalues on the unit circle as for unitary matrices. Here we find a new microscopic edge kernel that generalizes the known results for M=1. We briefly comment on the case when each product matrix results from a truncation of different size $L_j$.

A classification of 2-dim Lattice Theory

A unified classification and analysis is presented of two dimensional Dirac operators of QCD-like theories in the continuum as well as in a naive lattice discretization. Thereby we consider the quenched theory in the strong coupling limit. We do not only consider the case of a lattice which has an even number of lattice sites in both directions and is thus equivalent to the case of staggered fermions. We also study lattices with one or both directions with an odd parity to understand the general mechanism of changing the universality class via a discretization. Furthermore we identify the corresponding random matrix ensembles sharing the global symmetries of these QCD-like theories. Despite the Mermin-Wagner-Coleman theorem we find good agreement of lattice data with our random matrix predictions.

Discretization Effects in the $ε$ Domain of QCD

At nonzero lattice spacing the QCD partition function with Wilson quarks undergoes either a second order phase transition to the Aoki phase for decreasing quark mass or shows a first order jump when the quark mass changes sign. We discuss these phase transitions in terms of Wilson Dirac spectra and show that the first order scenario can only occur in the presence of dynamical quarks while in the quenched case we can only have a transition to the Aoki phase. The exact microscopic spectral density of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator with dynamical quarks is discussed as well. We conclude with some remarks on discretization effects for the overlap Dirac operator.

Mixing of orthogonal and skew-orthogonal polynomials and its relation to Wilson RMT

The unitary Wilson random matrix theory is an interpolation between the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble and the Gaussian unitary ensemble. This new way of interpolation is also reflected in the orthogonal polynomials corresponding to such a random matrix ensemble. Although the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble as well as the Gaussian unitary ensemble are associated to the Dyson index $β=2$ the intermediate ensembles exhibit a mixing of orthogonal polynomials and skew-orthogonal polynomials. We consider the Hermitian as well as the non-Hermitian Wilson random matrix and derive the corresponding polynomials, their recursion relations, Christoffel-Darboux-like formulas, Rodrigues formulas and representations as random matrix averages in a unifying way. With help of these results we derive the unquenched $k$-point correlation function of the Hermitian and then non-Hermitian Wilson random matrix in terms of two flavour partition functions only. This representation is due to a Pfaffian factorization drastically simplifying the expressions for numerical applications. It also serves as a good starting point for studying the Wilson-Dirac operator in the $ε$-regime of lattice quantum chromodynamics.

Products of Rectangular Random Matrices: Singular Values and Progressive Scattering

We discuss the product of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent Gaussian entries, which have several applications including wireless telecommunication and econophysics. For complex matrices an explicit expression for the joint probability density function is obtained using the Harish-Chandra--Itzykson--Zuber integration formula. Explicit expressions for all correlation functions and moments for finite matrix sizes are obtained using a two-matrix model and the method of bi-orthogonal polynomials. This generalises the classical result for the so-called Wishart--Laguerre Gaussian unitary ensemble (or chiral unitary ensemble) at M=1, and previous results for the product of square matrices. The correlation functions are given by a determinantal point process, where the kernel can be expressed in terms of Meijer $G$-functions. We compare the results with numerical simulations and known results for the macroscopic level density in the limit of large matrices. The location of the endpoints of support for the latter are analysed in detail for general $M$. Finally, we consider the so-called ergodic mutual information, which gives an upper bound for the spectral efficiency of a MIMO communication channel with multi-fold scattering.

Random Matrix Models for the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator of QCD-like theories

We introduce Random Matrix Models for the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator of QCD-like theories. We show that they are equivalent to the $ε$-limit of the chiral Lagrangian for Wilson chiral perturbation theory. Results are obtained for two-color QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation of the color group as well as any-color QCD with quarks in the adjoint representation. For $N_c=2$ we also have obtained the lattice spacing dependence of the quenched average spectral density for a fixed value of the index of the Dirac operator. Comparisons with direct numerical simulations of the random matrix ensemble are shown.

Singular value correlation functions for products of Wishart random matrices

Consider the product of $M$ quadratic random matrices with complex elements and no further symmetry, where all matrix elements of each factor have a Gaussian distribution. This generalises the classical Wishart-Laguerre Gaussian Unitary Ensemble with M=1. In this paper we first compute the joint probability distribution for the singular values of the product matrix when the matrix size $N$ and the number $M$ are fixed but arbitrary. This leads to a determinantal point process which can be realised in two different ways. First, it can be written as a one-matrix singular value model with a non-standard Jacobian, or second, for $M\geq2$, as a two-matrix singular value model with a set of auxiliary singular values and a weight proportional to the Meijer $G$-function. For both formulations we determine all singular value correlation functions in terms of the kernels of biorthogonal polynomials which we explicitly construct. They are given in terms of hypergeometric and Meijer $G$-functions, generalising the Laguerre polynomials. Our investigation was motivated from applications in telecommunication of multi-layered scattering MIMO channels. We present the ergodic mutual information for finite-$N$ for such a channel model with $M-1$ layers of scatterers as an example.

Spectral Properties of the Wilson Dirac Operator and random matrix theory

Random Matrix Theory has been successfully applied to lattice Quantum Chromodynamics. In particular, a great deal of progress has been made on the understanding, numerically as well as analytically, of the spectral properties of the Wilson Dirac operator. In this paper, we study the infra-red spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator via Random Matrix Theory including the three leading order $a^2$ correction terms that appear in the corresponding chiral Lagrangian. A derivation of the joint probability density of the eigenvalues is presented. This result is used to calculate the density of the complex eigenvalues, the density of the real eigenvalues and the distribution of the chiralities over the real eigenvalues. A detailed discussion of these quantities shows how each low energy constant affects the spectrum. Especially we consider the limit of small and large (which is almost the mean field limit) lattice spacing. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulations of the Random Matrix Theory show a perfect agreement with the analytical predictions. Furthermore we present some quantities which can be easily used for comparison of lattice data and the analytical results.

Surprising Pfaffian factorizations in Random Matrix Theory with Dyson index $β=2$

In the past decades, determinants and Pfaffians were found for eigenvalue correlations of various random matrix ensembles. These structures simplify the average over a large number of ratios of characteristic polynomials to integrations over one and two characteristic polynomials only. Up to now it was thought that determinants occur for ensembles with Dyson index $β=2$ whereas Pfaffians only for ensembles with $β=1,4$. We derive a non-trivial Pfaffian determinant for $β=2$ random matrix ensembles which is similar to the one for $β=1,4$. Thus, it unveils a hidden universality of this structure. We also give a general relation between the orthogonal polynomials related to the determinantal structure and the skew-orthogonal polynomials corresponding to the Pfaffian. As a particular example we consider the chiral unitary ensembles in great detail.

The Effect of the Low Energy Constants on the Spectral Properties of the Wilson Dirac Operator

We summarize recent analytical results obtained for lattice artifacts of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator. Hereby we discuss the effect of all three low energy constants. In particular we study the limit of small lattice spacing and also consider the regime of large lattice spacing which is closely related to the mean field limit. Thereby we extract simple relations between measurable quantities like the average number of additional real modes and the low energy constants. These relations may improve the fitting for the low energy constants.

Eigenvalue Density of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac Operator

We find the lattice spacing dependence of the eigenvalue density of the non-Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator in the $ε$-domain. The starting point is the joint probability density of the corresponding random matrix theory. In addition to the density of the complex eigenvalues we also obtain the density of the real eigenvalues separately for positive and negative chiralities as well as an explicit analytical expression for the number of additional real modes.

Random Matrix Models for Dirac Operators at finite Lattice Spacing

We study discretization effects of the Wilson and staggered Dirac operator with $N_{\rm c}>2$ using chiral random matrix theory (chRMT). We obtain analytical results for the joint probability density of Wilson-chRMT in terms of a determinantal expression over complex pairs of eigenvalues, and real eigenvalues corresponding to eigenvectors of positive or negative chirality as well as for the eigenvalue densities. The explicit dependence on the lattice spacing can be readily read off from our results which are compared to numerical simulations of Wilson-chRMT. For the staggered Dirac operator we have studied random matrices modeling the transition from non-degenerate eigenvalues at non-zero lattice spacing to degenerate ones in the continuum limit.

Supersymmetry approach to Wishart correlation matrices: Exact results

We calculate the `one-point function', meaning the marginal probability density function for any single eigenvalue, of real and complex Wishart correlation matrices. No explicit expression had been obtained for the real case so far. We succeed in doing so by using supersymmetry techniques to express the one-point function of real Wishart correlation matrices as a twofold integral. The result can be viewed as a resummation of a series of Jack polynomials in a non-trivial case. We illustrate our formula by numerical simulations. We also rederive a known expression for the one-point function of complex Wishart correlation matrices.

On the Efetov-Wegner terms by diagonalizing a Hermitian supermatrix

The diagonalization of Hermitian supermatrices is studied. Such a change of coordinates is inevitable to find certain structures in random matrix theory. However it still poses serious problems since up to now the calculation of all Rothstein contributions known as Efetov-Wegner terms in physics was quite cumbersome. We derive the supermatrix Bessel function with all Efetov-Wegner terms for an arbitrary rotation invariant probability density function. As applications we consider representations of generating functions for Hermitian random matrices with and without an external field as integrals over eigenvalues of Hermitian supermatrices. All results are obtained with all Efetov-Wegner terms which were unknown before in such an explicit and compact representation.

A new approach to derive Pfaffian structures for random matrix ensembles

Correlation functions for matrix ensembles with orthogonal and unitarysymplectic rotation symmetry are more complicated to calculate than in the unitary case. The supersymmetry method and the orthogonal polynomials are two techniques to tackle this task. Recently, we presented a new method to average ratios of characteristic polynomials over matrix ensembles invariant under the unitary group. Here, we extend this approach to ensembles with orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation symmetry. We show that Pfaffian structures can be derived for a wide class of orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation invariant ensembles in a unifying way. This includes also those for which this structure was not known previously, as the real Ginibre ensemble and the Gaussian real chiral ensemble with two independent matrices as well.

Derivation of determinantal structures for random matrix ensembles in a new way

There are several methods to treat ensembles of random matrices in symmetric spaces, circular matrices, chiral matrices and others. Orthogonal polynomials and the supersymmetry method are particular powerful techniques. Here, we present a new approach to calculate averages over ratios of characteristic polynomials. At first sight paradoxically, one can coin our approach "supersymmetry without supersymmetry" because we use structures from supersymmetry without actually mapping onto superspaces. We address two kinds of integrals which cover a wide range of applications for random matrix ensembles. For probability densities factorizing in the eigenvalues we find determinantal structures in a unifying way. As a new application we derive an expression for the k-point correlation function of an arbitrary rotation invariant probability density over the Hermitian matrices in the presence of an external field.

On the Eigenvalue Density of Real and Complex Wishart Correlation Matrices

Wishart correlation matrices are the standard model for the statistical analysis of time series. The ensemble averaged eigenvalue density is of considerable practical and theoretical interest. For complex time series and correlation matrices, the eigenvalue density is known exactly. In the real case, however, a fundamental mathematical obstacle made it forbidingly complicated to obtain exact results. We use the supersymmetry method to fully circumvent this problem. We present an exact formula for the eigenvalue density in the real case in terms of twofold integrals and finite sums.
