Big Free Groups are Almost Free

It is shown that the big free group (the set of countably-long words over a countable alphabet) is almost free, in the sense that any function from the alphabet to a compact topological group factors through a homomorphism. This statement is in fact a simple corollary of the more general result proven below on the extendability of homomorphisms from subgroups (of a certain kind) of the big free group to a compact topological group.

On the Ashtekar-Lewandowski Measure as a Restriction of the Product One

It is known that the $k$-dimensional Hausdorff measure on a $k$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is closely related to the Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that the Ashtekar-Lewandowski measure on the space of generalized $G$-connections for a compact, semi-simple, Lie group $G$, is analogously related to the product measure on the set of all $G$-valued functions on the group of loops. We also show that, the Ashtekar-Lewandowski measure is, under very mild conditions, supported on nowhere-continuous generalized connections.

On the Holonomic Equivalence of Two Curves

Given a principal $G$-bundle $P \to M$ and two $C^1$ curves in $M$ with coinciding endpoints, we say that the two curves are holonomically equivalent if the parallel transport along them is identical for any smooth connection on $P$. The main result in this paper is that if $G$ is semi-simple, then the two curves are holonomically equivalent if and only if there is a thin, i.e. of rank at most one, $C^1$ homotopy linking them. Additionally, it is also demonstrated that this is equivalent to the factorizability through a tree of the loop formed from the two curves and to the reducibility of a certain transfinite word associated to this loop. The curves are not assumed to be regular.

Encoding simplicial quantum geometry in group field theories

We show that a new symmetry requirement on the GFT field, in the context of an extended GFT formalism, involving both Lie algebra and group elements, leads, in 3d, to Feynman amplitudes with a simplicial path integral form based on the Regge action, to a proper relation between the discrete connection and the triad vectors appearing in it, and to a much more satisfactory and transparent encoding of simplicial geometry already at the level of the GFT action.
