Pairing and the phase diagram of the normal coherence length ξN(T,x)ξ_N(T,x) above TcT_c of La2−xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films probed by the Josephson effect

Critical currents IcI_c were measured in Superconducting - normal - superconducting SNS c-axis junctions, where S was optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7−δYBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} below TcT_c (90 K) and N was La2−xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 above its TcT_c (<<25 K) but in the pseudogap regime. IcI_c was measured versus temperature T in junctions with various N-barrier thicknesses dd and doping levels xx. From the proximity effect relation Ic(T)∝exp[−d/ξN(T)]I_c(T)\propto exp[-d/ξ_N(T)], the normal coherence length ξN(T)ξ_N(T) of N was extracted and plotted versus T. Besides finding a long range proximity effect as reported also by others, we found a crossing at about 55 K above which ξN(x=0.1)>ξN(x=0.18)]ξ_N(x=0.1)>ξ_N(x=0.18)]. This unexpected result where junctions with lower carrier density in the barrier have higher conductance, is attributed to the presence of pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime of the cuprate barrier. Our data yields a new phase diagram of ξN(T,x)ξ_N(T,x) whose contours of constant ξNξ_N follow the trend of the superconducting dome of La2−xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 above its TcT_c, with ξNξ_N enhancement in the underdoped regime above 55 K.

Signature of proximity induced triplet superconductivity in junctions made of the doped topological insulator Bi2Se3\rm Bi_2Se_3 and the s-wave superconductor NbN

Thin film junctions and bilayers of the doped topological insulator Bi2Se3\rm Bi_2Se_3 and the s-wave superconductor NbN were found to exhibit conductance spectra with prominent zero bias and coherence peaks. Various tunneling models with different pair potentials have failed to fit our data, except for the triplet px+ipyp_x+ip_y pair potential, which breaks time reversal symmetry, but yielded reasonably good fits. This provides evidence for proximity induced triplet superconductivity in the Bi2Se3\rm Bi_2Se_3 layer near the interface with the NbN film.

Zero energy bound states in tunneling conductance spectra at the interface of an s-wave superconductor and a topological insulator in NbN-Bi2Se3Bi_2Se_3-Au thin film junctions

Measurements of conductance spectra in a superconductor - topological insulator - normal metal thin film junctions of NbN-Bi2Se3\rm Bi_2Se_3-Au are reported. Junctions with ex-situ and in-situ prepared NbN−Bi2Se3\rm NbN-Bi_2Se_3 interfaces were studied. At low temperatures, all the ex-situ junctions showed coherence peaks in their conductance spectra, but imbedded robust zero bias conductance peaks were observed only in junctions with a metallic or a metal to insulator transition below Tc\rm T_c of the NbN electrode. The in-situ junctions which had about two orders of magnitude lower resistance at low temperatures, generally showed flat conductance spectra at low bias, with no coherence or broad Andreev peaks, since the critical current of the NbN electrode was reached first, at voltage bias below the energy gap of the superconductor. A weak zero bias conductance peak however, was observed in one of these junctions. We conclude that significant tunneling barriers, as in the ex-situ prepared junctions, are essential for the observation of coherence peaks and the zero energy bound states. The later seem to originate in the Bi2Se3\rm Bi_2Se_3-NbN interface, as they are absent in reference Au-NbN junctions without the topological layer sandwiched in between.

Critical current measurements in superconductor - ferromagnet - superconductor junctions of YBa2Cu3OyYBa_2Cu_3O_y-SrRuO3SrRuO_3-YBa2Cu3OyYBa_2Cu_3O_y: No evidence for a dominant proximity induced triplet superconductivity in the ferromagnetic barrier

Transport measurements in ramp-type junctions of YBa2Cu3Oy−SrRuO3−YBa2Cu3OyYBa_2Cu_3O_y-SrRuO_3-YBa_2Cu_3O_y with TcT_c values of either 80-90 K or 60-70 K are reported. In both type of junctions but without a barrier ("shorts"), the supercurrent densities at 4.2 K reached 7.5 and 3.5 MA/cm2^2, respectively, indicating the high quality of the fabrication process. Plots of the critical current versus thickness of the ferromagnetic barrier at 4.2 K show exponential decays with decay lengths of 1.1 nm for the 90 K phase and 1.4 nm for the 60 K phase, which are much shorter than the relevant coherence lengths ξF∼5−6ξ_F\sim 5-6 nm or ξN∼ξ_N\sim16 nm of SrRuO3SrRuO_3. We thus conclude that there is no dominant proximity induced triplet superconductivity in the ferromagnet in our junctions.

Observation of two Andreev-like energy scales in La2−xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor junctions

Conductance spectra measurements of highly transparent ramp-type junctions made of superconducting La2−xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 electrodes and non superconducting La1.65Sr0.35CuO4La_{1.65}Sr_{0.35}CuO_4 barrier are reported. At low temperatures below TcT_c, these junctions have two prominent Andreev-like conductance peaks with clear steps at energies Δ1Δ_1 and Δ2Δ_2 with Δ2>2Δ1Δ_2 > 2Δ_1. No such peaks appear above TcT_c. The doping dependence at 2 K shows that both Δ1Δ_1 and Δ2Δ_2 scale roughly as TcT_c. Δ1Δ_1 is identified as the superconducting energy gap, while a few scenarios are proposed as for the origin of Δ2Δ_2.

Transport and spectroscopic properties of superconductor - ferromagnet - superconductor junctions of La1.9Sr0.1CuO4La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4 - La0.67Ca0.33MnO3La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3 - La1.9Sr0.1CuO4La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4

Transport and Conductance spectra measurements of ramp-type junctions made of cuprate superconducting La1.9Sr0.1CuO4La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4 electrodes and a manganite ferromagnetic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3 barrier are reported. At low temperatures below TcT_c, the conductance spectra show Andreev-like broad peaks superposed on a tunneling-like background, and sometimes also sub-gap Andreev resonances. The energy gap values ΔΔ found from fits of the data ranged mostly between 7-10 mV. As usual, the gap features were suppressed under magnetic fields but revealed the tunneling-like conductance background. After field cycling to 5 or 6 T and back to 0 T, the conductance spectra were always higher than under zero field cooling, reflecting the negative magnetoresistance of the manganite barrier. A signature of superparamagnetism was found in the conductance spectra of junctions with a 12 nm thick LCMO barrier. Observed critical currents with barrier thickness of 12 nm or more, were shown to be an artifact due to incomplete milling of one of the superconducting electrodes.

Long range proximity effect in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO)/(100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers: Evidence for induced triplet superconductivity in the ferromagnet

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements conducted on epitaxially grown bilayers of half-metallic ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) on superconducting (SC) (100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) reveal long-range penetration of superconducting order into the LCMO. This anomalous proximity effect manifests itself in the tunneling spectra measured on the LCMO layer as gaps and zero bias conductance peaks. Remarkably, these proximity-induced spectral features were observed for bilayers with LCMO thickness of up to 30 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the expected ferromagnetic coherence length in LCMO. We argue that this long-range proximity effect can be accounted for by the formation of spin triplet pairing at the LCMO side of the bilayer due to magnetic inhomogeneity at the interface or at domain walls. Possible symmetries of the induced order parameter are discussed.
