Classically emulated digital quantum simulation for screening and confinement in the Schwinger model with a topological term

We perform digital quantum simulation, using a classical simulator, to study screening and confinement in a gauge theory with a topological term, focusing on ($1+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) with a theta term. We compute the ground state energy in the presence of probe charges to estimate the potential between them, via adiabatic state preparation. We compare our simulation results and analytical predictions for a finite volume, finding good agreements. In particular our result in the massive case shows a linear behavior for non-integer charges and a non-linear behavior for integer charges, consistently with the expected confinement (screening) behavior for non-integer (integer) charges.

U(1) spin Chern-Simons theory and Arf invariants in two dimensions

The level-k U(1) Chern-Simons theory is a spin topological quantum field theory for k odd. Its dynamics is captured by the 2d CFT of a compact boson with a certain radius. Recently it was recognized that a dependence on the 2d spin structure can be given to the CFT by modifying it using the so-called Arf invariant. We demonstrate that one can reorganize the torus partition function of the modified CFT into a finite sum involving a finite number of conformal blocks. This allows us to reproduce the modular matrices of the spin theory. We use the modular matrices to calculate the partition function of the spin Chern-Simons theory on the lens space $L(a,\pm 1)$, and demonstrate the expected dependence on the 3d spin structure.

Janus interface entropy and Calabi's diastasis in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories

We study the entropy associated with the Janus interface in a 4$d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory. With the entropy defined as the interface contribution to an entanglement entropy we show, under mild assumptions, that the Janus interface entropy is proportional to the geometric quantity called Calabi's diastasis on the space of $\mathcal{N}=2$ marginal couplings, confirming an earlier conjecture by two of the authors and generalizing a similar result in two dimensions. Our method is based on a CFT consideration that makes use of the Casini-Huerta-Myers conformal map from the flat space to the round sphere.

SUSY localization for Coulomb branch operators in omega-deformed 3d N=4 gauge theories

We perform SUSY localization for Coulomb branch operators of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with $Ω$-deformation. For the dressed monopole operators whose expectation values do not involve non-perturbative corrections, our computations reproduce the results of the so-called abelianization procedure. For the expectation values of other operators and the correlation functions of multiple operators in $U(N)$ gauge theories, we compute the non-perturbative corrections due to monopole bubbling using matrix models obtained by brane construction. We relate the results of localization to algebraic structures discussed in the mathematical literature, and also point out a similar relation for line operators in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories. For $U(N)$ (quiver) gauge theories in 3d we demonstrate a direct correspondence between wall-crossing and the ordering of operators.

Wall-crossing and operator ordering for 't Hooft operators in N=2 gauge theories

We study half-BPS 't Hooft line operators in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(N)$ gauge theories on $S^1\times \mathbb{R}^3$ with an $Ω$-deformation. The recently proposed brane construction of 't Hooft operators shows that non-perturbative contributions to their correlator are identified with the Witten indices of quiver supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For the products of minimal 't Hooft operators, a chamber in the space of Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters in the quantum mechanics corresponds to an ordering of the operators inserted along a line. These considerations lead us to conjecture that the Witten indices can be read off from the Moyal products of the expectation values of the minimal 't Hooft operators, and also that wall-crossing occurs in the quantum mechanics only when the ordering of the operators changes. We confirm the conjectures by explicitly computing the Witten indices for the products of two and three minimal 't Hooft operators in all possible chambers.

Line operators on S^1xR^3 and quantization of the Hitchin moduli space

We perform an exact localization calculation for the expectation values of Wilson-'t Hooft line operators in N=2 gauge theories on S^1xR^3. The expectation values are naturally expressed in terms of the complexified Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates, and form a quantum mechanically deformed algebra of functions on the associated Hitchin moduli space by Moyal multiplication. We propose that these expectation values are the Weyl transform of the Verlinde operators, which act on Liouville/Toda conformal blocks as difference operators. We demonstrate our proposal explicitly in SU(N) examples.

Exact results for boundaries and domain walls in 2d supersymmetric theories

We apply supersymmetric localization to N=(2,2) gauged linear sigma models on a hemisphere, with boundary conditions, i.e., D-branes, preserving B-type supersymmetries. We explain how to compute the hemisphere partition function for each object in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves, and argue that it depends only on its K theory class. The hemisphere partition function computes exactly the central charge of the D-brane, completing the well-known formula obtained by an anomaly inflow argument. We also formulate supersymmetric domain walls as D-branes in the product of two theories. In particular 4d line operators bound to a surface operator, corresponding via the AGT relation to certain defects in Toda CFT's, are constructed as domain walls. Moreover we exhibit domain walls that realize the sl(2) affine Hecke algebra.

Exact results for vortex loop operators in 3d supersymmetric theories

Three dimensional field theories admit disorder line operators, dubbed vortex loop operators. They are defined by the path integral in the presence of prescribed singularities along the defect line. We study half-BPS vortex loop operators for N=2 supersymmetric theories on S^3, its deformation S^3_b and S^1 x S^2. We construct BPS vortex loops defined by the path integral with a fixed gauge or flavor holonomy for infinitesimal curves linking the loop. It is also possible to include a singular profile for matter fields. For vortex loops defined by holonomy, we perform supersymmetric localization by calculating the fluctuation modes, or alternatively by applying the index theory for transversally elliptic operators. We clarify how the latter method works in situations without fixed points of relevant isometries. Abelian mirror symmetry transforms Wilson and vortex loops in a specific way. In particular an ordinary Wilson loop transforms into a vortex loop for a flavor symmetry. Our localization results confirm the predictions of abelian mirror symmetry.

Line operators in supersymmetric gauge theories and the 2d-4d relation

This is the sixth article in the collection of reviews "Exact results on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories", ed. J.Teschner. It is discussed how to use localisation techniques for the calculation of expectation values of Wilson and 't Hooft line operators. The results establish direct connections between supersymmetric line operators in gauge theories and the Verlinde line operators known from conformal field theory. Similar results can be used to strongly support connections to the quantum theories obtained from the quantisation of the Hitchin moduli spaces.

Scheme dependence of instanton counting in ALE spaces

There have been two distinct schemes studied in the literature for instanton counting in A_{p-1} asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) spaces. We point out that the two schemes---namely the counting of orbifolded instantons and instanton counting in the resolved space---lead in general to different results for partition functions. We illustrate this observation in the case of N=2 U(N) gauge theory with 2N flavors on the A_{p-1} ALE space. We propose simple relations between the instanton partition functions given by the two schemes and test them by explicit calculations.

Exact Results for 't Hooft Loops in Gauge Theories on S^4

The path integral of a general N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory on S^4 is exactly evaluated in the presence of a supersymmetric 't Hooft loop operator. The result we find - obtained using localization techniques - captures all perturbative quantum corrections as well as non-perturbative effects due to instantons and monopoles, which are supported at the north pole, south pole and equator of S^4. As a by-product, our gauge theory calculations successfully confirm the predictions made for 't Hooft loops obtained from the calculation of topological defect correlators in Liouville/Toda conformal field theory.

On the instantons and the hypermultiplet mass of N=2* super Yang-Mills on S^4

We show that the physical N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a four-sphere with an arbitrary gauge group receives no instanton contributions, by clarifying the relation between the hypermultiplet mass and the equivariant parameters of the mass-deformed theory preserving N=2 supersymmetry. The correct relation also implies that N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2) corresponds to Liouville theory on a torus with the insertion of a non-trivial operator, rather than the identity as have been claimed in the literature.

String scattering in flat space and a scaling limit of Yang-Mills correlators

We use the flat space limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence to derive a simple relation between the 2 to 2 scattering amplitude of massless string states in type IIB superstring theory on ten-dimensional Minkowski space and a scaling limit of the N=4 super Yang-Mills four point functions. We conjecture that this relation holds non-perturbatively and at arbitrarily high energy.

Gauge Theory Loop Operators and Liouville Theory

We propose a correspondence between loop operators in a family of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories on S^4 -- including Wilson, 't Hooft and dyonic operators -- and Liouville theory loop operators on a Riemann surface. This extends the beautiful relation between the partition function of these N=2 gauge theories and Liouville correlators found by Alday, Gaiotto and Tachikawa. We show that the computation of these Liouville correlators with the insertion of a Liouville loop operator reproduces Pestun's formula capturing the expectation value of a Wilson loop operator in the corresponding gauge theory. We prove that our definition of Liouville loop operators is invariant under modular transformations, which given our correspondence, implies the conjectured action of S-duality on the gauge theory loop operators. Our computations in Liouville theory make an explicit prediction for the exact expectation value of 't Hooft and dyonic loop operators in these N=2 gauge theories. The Liouville loop operators are also found to admit a simple geometric interpretation within quantum Teichmuller theory as the quantum operators representing the length of geodesics. We study the algebra of Liouville loop operators and show that it gives evidence for our proposal as well as providing definite predictions for the operator product expansion of loop operators in gauge theory.

Matrix Models for the Black Hole Information Paradox

We study various matrix models with a charge-charge interaction as toy models of the gauge dual of the AdS black hole. These models show a continuous spectrum and power-law decay of correlators at late time and infinite N, implying information loss in this limit. At finite N, the spectrum is discrete and correlators have recurrences, so there is no information loss. We study these models by a variety of techniques, such as Feynman graph expansion, loop equations, and sum over Young tableaux, and we obtain explicitly the leading 1/N^2 corrections for the spectrum and correlators. These techniques are suggestive of possible dual bulk descriptions. At fixed order in 1/N^2 the spectrum remains continuous and no recurrence occurs, so information loss persists. However, the interchange of the long-time and large-N limits is subtle and requires further study.

S-duality, 't Hooft operators and the operator product expansion

We study S-duality in N=4 super Yang-Mills with an arbitrary gauge group by determining the operator product expansion of the circular BPS Wilson and 't Hooft loop operators. The coefficients in the expansion of an 't Hooft loop operator for chiral primary operators and the stress-energy tensor are calculated in perturbation theory using the quantum path-integral definition of the 't Hooft operator recently proposed. The corresponding operator product coefficients for the dual Wilson loop operator are determined in the strong coupling expansion. The results for the 't Hooft operator in the weak coupling expansion exactly reproduce those for the dual Wilson loop operator in the strong coupling expansion, thereby demonstrating the quantitative prediction of S-duality for these observables.

Spectral curves, emergent geometry, and bubbling solutions for Wilson loops

We study the supersymmetric circular Wilson loops of N=4 super Yang-Mills in large representations of the gauge group. In particular, we obtain the spectral curves of the matrix model which captures the expectation value of the loops. These spectral curves are then proven to be precisely the hyperelliptic surfaces that characterize the bubbling solutions dual to the Wilson loops, thus yielding an example of a geometry emerging from an eigenvalue distribution. We finally discuss the Wilson loop expectation value from the matrix model and from supergravity.

Wilson Loops, Geometric Transitions and Bubbling Calabi-Yau's

Motivated by recent developments in the AdS/CFT correspondence, we provide several alternative bulk descriptions of an arbitrary Wilson loop operator in Chern-Simons theory. Wilson loop operators in Chern-Simons theory can be given a description in terms of a configuration of branes or alternatively anti-branes in the resolved conifold geometry. The representation of the Wilson loop is encoded in the holonomy of the gauge field living on the dual brane configuration. By letting the branes undergo a new type of geometric transition, we argue that each Wilson loop operator can also be described by a bubbling Calabi-Yau geometry, whose topology encodes the representation of the Wilson loop. These Calabi-Yau manifolds provide a novel representation of knot invariants. For the unknot we confirm these identifications to all orders in the genus expansion.

Higgsing and Superpotential Deformations of ADE Superconformal Theories

We study large classes of renormalization group flows, driven by scalar expectation values or mesonic superpotential terms, away from the conformal fixed points of the 4d supersymmetric gauge theories with $ADE$-type superpotentials. The $a$-maximization procedure allows us to compute the $R$ charges and to check the $a$-theorem conjecture. For a theory obtained by Higgsing the $D_{k+2}$ theory, we use the magnetic dual description proposed by Brodie to determine the parameter region where the resulting theory is at a non-trivial conformal fixed point.

The Equality of Solutions in Vacuum String Field Theory

We analytically prove that the matter solution of vacuum string field theory constructed by Kostelecky and Potting is the matter sliver state. We also give an analytical proof that the ghost solution by Hata and Kawano is the sliver state in the twisted ghost CFT. It is also proved that the candidate state for the tachyon proposed by Hata and Kawano can be identified with the state constructed by Rastelli, Sen and Zwiebach using CFT. Our proofs are based on the techniques recently developed by Okuyama.
