Conformal and non-conformal hyperloop deformations of the 1/2 BPS circle

We construct new large classes of BPS Wilson hyperloops in three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ quiver Chern-Simons-matter theory on $S^3$. The main strategy is to start with the 1/2 BPS Wilson loop of this theory, choose any linear combination of the supercharges it preserves, and look for deformations built out of the matter fields that still preserve that supercharge. This is a powerful generalization of a recently developed approach based on deformations of 1/4 and 1/8 BPS bosonic loops, which itself was far more effective at discovering new operators than older methods relying on complicated ansatze. We discover many new moduli spaces of BPS hyperloops preserving varied numbers of supersymmetries and varied subsets of the symmetries of the 1/2 BPS operator. In particular, we find new bosonic operators preserving 2 or 3 supercharges as well as new families of loops that do not share supercharges with any bosonic loops, including subclasses of both 1/8 and 1/4 BPS loops that are conformal.

Cutting and Sewing Riemann Surfaces in Mathematics, Physics and Clay

A series of ceramic artworks are presented, inspired by the author's research connecting theoretical physics to the beautiful theory of Riemann surfaces. More specifically the research is related to the classification of curves on the surfaces based on a description of them as built from basic building blocks known as "pairs of pants". The relevant background on this mathematics of these two dimensional spaces is outlined, some of the artistic process is explained: Both the conceptual ideas and their implementation. Many photos of the ceramics are included to illustrate this and the connected physics problem is briefly mentioned.

M2-doughnuts

We present a family of new M2-brane solutions in $AdS_7\times S^4$ that calculate toroidal BPS surface operators in the $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory. These observables are conformally invariant and not subject to anomalies so we are able to evaluate their finite expectation values at leading order at large $N$. In the limit of a thin torus we find a cylinder, which is a natural surface generalization of both the circular and parallel lines Wilson loop. We study and comment on this limit in some detail.

BPS Wilson loops and quiver varieties

Three dimensional supersymmetric field theories have large moduli spaces of circular Wilson loops preserving a fixed set of supercharges. We simplify previous constructions of such Wilson loops and amend and clarify their classification. For a generic quiver gauge theory we identify the moduli space as a quotient of $C^m$ for some $m$ by an appropriate symmetry group. These spaces are quiver varieties associated to a cover of the original quiver or a subquiver thereof. This moduli space is generically singular and at the singularities there are large degeneracies of operators which seem different, but whose expectation values and correlation functions with all other gauge invariant operators are identical. The formulation presented here, where the Wilson loops are on $S^3$ or squashed $S^3_b$ also allows to directly implement a localization procedure on these observables, which previously required an indirect cohomological equivalence argument.

Roadmap on Wilson loops in 3d Chern-Simons-matter theories

This is a compact review of recent results on supersymmetric Wilson loops in ABJ(M) and related theories. It aims to be a quick introduction to the state of the art in the field and a discussion of open problems. It is divided into short chapters devoted to different questions and techniques. Some new results, perspectives and speculations are also presented. We hope this might serve as a baseline for further studies of this topic.

The $\mathcal{N}=2$ Schur index from free fermions

We study the Schur index of 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ circular quiver theories. We show that the index can be expressed as a weighted sum over partition functions describing systems of free Fermions living on a circle. For circular $SU(N)$ quivers of arbitrary length we evaluate the large $N$ limit of the index, up to exponentially suppressed corrections. For the single node theory ($\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM) and the two node quiver we are able to go beyond the large $N$ limit, and obtain the complete, all orders large $N$ expansion of the index, as well as explicit finite $N$ results in terms of elliptic functions.

3d mirror symmetry as a canonical transformation

We generalize the free Fermi-gas formulation of certain 3d ${\cal N}=3$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories by allowing Fayet-Iliopoulos couplings as well as mass terms for bifundamental matter fields. The resulting partition functions are given by simple modifications of the argument of the Airy function found previously. With these extra parameters it is easy to see that mirror-symmetry corresponds to linear canonical transformations on the phase space (or operator algebra) of the 1-dimensional fermions.

A profusion of $1/2$ BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories

We initiate the study of $1/2$ BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories in three dimensions. We consider a circular or linear quiver with Chern-Simons levels $k$, $-k$ and $0$, and focus on loops preserving one of the two $SU(2)$ subgroups of the $R$-symmetry. In the cases with no vanishing Chern-Simons levels, we find a pair of Wilson loops for each pair of adjacent nodes on the quiver connected by a hypermultiplet (nodes connected by twisted hypermultiplets have Wilson loops preserving another set of supercharges). We expect this classical pairwise degeneracy to be lifted by quantum corrections. In the case with nodes with vanishing Chern-Simons terms connected by twisted hypermultiplets, we find that the usual $1/4$ BPS Wilson loops are automatically enlarged to $1/2$ BPS, as happens also in 3-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. When the nodes with vanishing Chern-Simons levels are connected by untwisted hypermultiplets, we do not find any Wilson loops coupling to those nodes which are classically invariant. Rather, we find several loops whose supersymmetry variation, while non zero, vanishes in any correlation function, so is weakly zero. We expect only one linear combination of those Wilson loops to remain BPS when quantum corrections are included. We analyze the M-theory duals of those Wilson loops and comment on their degeneracy. We also show that these Wilson loops are cohomologically equivalent to certain $1/4$ BPS Wilson loops whose expectation value can be evaluated by the appropriate localized matrix model.

On Classical Solutions of 4d Supersymmetric Higher Spin Theory

We present a simple construction of solutions to the supersymmetric higher spin theory based on solutions to bosonic theories. We illustrate this for the case of the Didenko-Vasiliev solution in arXiv:0906.3898, for which we have found a striking simplification where the higher-spin connection takes the vacuum value. Studying these solutions further, we check under which conditions they preserve some supersymmetry in the bulk, and when they are compatible with the boundary conditions conjectured to be dual to certain 3d SUSY Chern-Simons-matter theories. We perform the analysis for a variety of theories with $\mathcal{N}$ = 2, $\mathcal{N}$ = 3, $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 and $\mathcal{N}$ = 6 and find a rich spectrum of $1/4$, $1/3$ and $1/2$-BPS solutions.

Partition functions of 3d $\hat D$-quivers and their mirror duals from 1d free fermions

We study the matrix models calculating the sphere partition functions of 3d gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry and a quiver structure of a $\hat D$ Dynkin diagram (where each node is a unitary gauge group). As in the case of necklace ($\hat A $) quivers, we can map the problem to that of free fermion quantum mechanics whose complicated Hamiltonian we find explicitly. Many of these theories are conjectured to be dual under mirror symmetry to certain unitary linear quivers with extra Sp nodes or antisymmetric hypermultiplets. We show that the free fermion formulations of such mirror pairs are related by a linear symplectic transformation. We then study the large N expansion of the partition function, which as in the case of the $\hat A$-quivers is given to all orders in 1/N by an Airy function. We simplify the algorithm to calculate the numerical coefficients appearing in the Airy function and evaluate them for a wide class of $\hat D$-quiver theories.

The ${\cal N}=4$ Schur index with Polyakov loops

Recently the Schur index of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM was evaluated in closed form to all orders including exponential corrections in the large $N$ expansion and for fixed finite $N$. This was achieved by identifying the matrix model which calculates the index with the partition function of a system of free fermions on a circle. The index can be enriched by the inclusion of loop operators and the case of Wilson loops is particularly easy, as it amounts to inserting extra characters into the matrix model. The Fermi-gas approach is applied here to this problem, the formalism is explored and explicit results at large $N$ are found for the fundamental as well as a few other symmetric and antisymmetric representations.

The exact Schur index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

The Witten index counts the difference in the number of bosonic and fermionic states of a quantum mechanical system. The Schur index, which can be defined for theories with at least $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry in four dimensions is a particular refinement of the index, dependent on one parameter $q$ serving as the fugacity for a particular set of charges which commute with the hamiltonian and some supersymmetry generators. This index has a known expression for all Lagrangian and some non-Lagrangian theories as a finite dimensional integral or a complicated infinite sum. In the case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with gauge group $U(N)$ we rewrite this as the partition function of a gas of $N$ non interacting and translationally invariant fermions on a circle. This allows us to perform the integrals and write down explicit expressions for fixed $N$ as well as the exact all orders large $N$ expansion.

Exact results for vortex loop operators in 3d supersymmetric theories

Three dimensional field theories admit disorder line operators, dubbed vortex loop operators. They are defined by the path integral in the presence of prescribed singularities along the defect line. We study half-BPS vortex loop operators for N=2 supersymmetric theories on S^3, its deformation S^3_b and S^1 x S^2. We construct BPS vortex loops defined by the path integral with a fixed gauge or flavor holonomy for infinitesimal curves linking the loop. It is also possible to include a singular profile for matter fields. For vortex loops defined by holonomy, we perform supersymmetric localization by calculating the fluctuation modes, or alternatively by applying the index theory for transversally elliptic operators. We clarify how the latter method works in situations without fixed points of relevant isometries. Abelian mirror symmetry transforms Wilson and vortex loops in a specific way. In particular an ordinary Wilson loop transforms into a vortex loop for a flavor symmetry. Our localization results confirm the predictions of abelian mirror symmetry.

From algebraic curve to minimal surface and back

We derive the Lax operator for a very large family of classical minimal surface solutions in $AdS_3$ describing Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. These solutions, constructed by Ishizeki, Kruczenski and Ziama, are associated with a hyperellictic surface of odd genus. We verify that the algebraic curve derived from the Lax operator is indeed none-other than this hyperelliptic surface.

Localization in Supergravity and Quantum $AdS_4/CFT_3$ Holography

We compute the quantum gravity partition function of M-theory on $AdS_4 \times X_7 $ by using localization techniques in four-dimensional gauged supergravity obtained by a consistent truncation on the Sasaki-Einstein manifold $X_{7}$. The supergravity path integral reduces to a finite dimensional integral over two collective coordinates that parametrize the localizing instanton solutions. The renormalized action of the off-shell instanton solutions depends linearly and holomorphically on the "square root" prepotential evaluated at the center of $AdS_{4}$. The partition function resembles the Laplace transform of the wave function of a topological string and with an assumption about the measure for the localization integral yields an Airy function in precise agreement with the computation from the boundary ABJM theory on a 3-sphere. Our bulk quantum gravity computation is nonperturbatively exact in four-dimensional Planck length but ignores corrections due to brane-instantons.

The spectrum of tachyons in AdS/CFT

We analyze the spectrum of open strings stretched between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in planar AdS/CFT using various tools. We focus on open strings ending on two giant gravitons with different orientation in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ and study the spectrum of string excitations using the following approaches: open spin-chain, boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (BTBA). We find agreement between a perturbative high order diagrammatic calculation in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and the leading finite-size boundary Luscher correction. We study the ground state energy of the system at finite coupling by deriving and numerically solving a set of BTBA equations. While the numerics give reasonable results at small coupling, they break down at finite coupling when the total energy of the string gets close to zero, possibly indicating that the state turns tachyonic. The location of the breakdown is also predicted analytically.

From weak to strong coupling in ABJM theory

The partition function of N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory (known as ABJM theory) on S^3, as well as certain Wilson loop observables, are captured by a zero dimensional super-matrix model. This super-matrix model is closely related to a matrix model describing topological Chern-Simons theory on a lens space. We explore further these recent observations and extract more exact results in ABJM theory from the matrix model. In particular we calculate the planar free energy, which matches at strong coupling the classical IIA supergravity action on AdS_4 x CP^3 and gives the correct N^{3/2} scaling for the number of degrees of freedom of the M2 brane theory. Furthermore we find contributions coming from world-sheet instanton corrections in CP^3. We also calculate non-planar corrections, both to the free energy and to the Wilson loop expectation values. This matrix model appears also in the study of topological strings on a toric Calabi-Yau manifold, and an intriguing connection arises between the space of couplings of the planar ABJM theory and the moduli space of this Calabi-Yau. In particular it suggests that, in addition to the usual perturbative and strong coupling (AdS) expansions, a third natural expansion locus is the line where one of the two 't Hooft couplings vanishes and the other is finite. This is the conifold locus of the Calabi-Yau, and leads to an expansion around topological Chern-Simons theory. We present some explicit results for the partition function and Wilson loop observables around this locus.

Integrable Wilson loops

The generalized quark-antiquark potential of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on S^3 x R calculates the potential between a pair of heavy charged particles separated by an arbitrary angle on S^3 and also an angle in flavor space. It can be calculated by a Wilson loop following a prescribed path and couplings, or after a conformal transformation, by a cusped Wilson loop in flat space, hence also generalizing the usual concept of the cusp anomalous dimension. In AdS_5 x S^5 this is calculated by an infinite open string. I present here an open spin-chain model which calculates the spectrum of excitations of such open strings. In the dual gauge theory these are cusped Wilson loops with extra operator insertions at the cusp. The boundaries of the spin-chain introduce a non-trivial reflection phase and break the bulk symmetry down to a single copy of psu(2|2). The dependence on the two angles is captured by the two embeddings of this algebra into \psu(2|2)^2, i.e., by a global rotation. The exact answer to this problem is conjectured to be given by solutions to a set of twisted boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz integral equations. In particular the generalized quark-antiquark potential or cusp anomalous dimension is recovered by calculating the ground state energy of the minimal length spin-chain, with no sites. It gets contributions only from virtual particles reflecting off the boundaries. I reproduce from this calculation some known weak coupling perturtbative results.

Generalized quark-antiquark potential in AdS/CFT

In this talk we present a family of Wilson loop operators which continuously interpolates between the 1/2 BPS line and the antiparallel lines, and can be thought of as calculating a generalization of the quark--antiquark potential for the gauge theory on S^3 x R. We evaluate the first two orders of these loops perturbatively both in the gauge and string theory. We obtain analytical expressions in a systematic expansion around the 1/2 BPS configuration, and comment on possible all-loop patterns for these Wilson loops.

Nonperturbative aspects of ABJM theory

Using the matrix model which calculates the exact free energy of ABJM theory on S^3 we study non-perturbative effects in the large N expansion of this model, i.e., in the genus expansion of type IIA string theory on AdS4xCP^3. We propose a general prescription to extract spacetime instanton actions from general matrix models, in terms of period integrals of the spectral curve, and we use it to determine them explicitly in the ABJM matrix model, as exact functions of the 't Hooft coupling. We confirm numerically that these instantons control the asymptotic growth of the genus expansion. Furthermore, we find that the dominant instanton action at strong coupling determined in this way exactly matches the action of an Euclidean D2-brane instanton wrapping RP^3.

(de)Tails of Toda CFT

The relation between the partition function of N=2 gauge theories in 4d and conformal Toda field theory in 2d is explained for the case where the 4d theory is a linear quiver with "quiver tails". That is when the 4d theory has gauge groups of different rank. We propose an identification of a subset of the states of Toda CFT which represent the Coulomb-branch parameters of the different rank gauge multiplets and study their three-point functions and descendants.

Generalized quark-antiquark potential at weak and strong coupling

We study a two-parameter family of Wilson loop operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory which interpolates smoothly between the 1/2 BPS line or circle and a pair of antiparallel lines. These observables capture a natural generalization of the quark-antiquark potential. We calculate these loops on the gauge theory side to second order in perturbation theory and in a semiclassical expansion in string theory to one-loop order. The resulting determinants are given in integral form and can be evaluated numerically for general values of the parameters or analytically in a systematic expansion around the 1/2 BPS configuration. We comment about the feasibility of deriving all-loop results for these Wilson loops.

Space-like minimal surfaces in AdS x S

We present a four parameter family of classical string solutions in AdS_3 x S^3, which end along a light-like tetragon at the boundary of AdS_3 and carry angular momentum along two cycles on the sphere. The string surfaces are space-like and their projections on AdS_3 and on S^3 have constant mean curvature. The construction is based on the Pohlmeyer reduction of the related sigma model. After embedding in AdS_5 x S^5, we calculate the regularized area and analyze conserved charges. Comments on possible relations to scattering amplitudes are presented. We also sketch time-like versions of our solutions.

The Virtue of Defects in 4D Gauge Theories and 2D CFTs

We advance a correspondence between the topological defect operators in Liouville and Toda conformal field theories - which we construct - and loop operators and domain wall operators in four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on S^4. Our computation of the correlation functions in Liouville/Toda theory in the presence of topological defect operators, which are supported on curves on the Riemann surface, yields the exact answer for the partition function of four dimensional gauge theories in the presence of various walls and loop operators; results which we can quantitatively substantiate with an independent gauge theory analysis. As an interesting outcome of this work for two dimensional conformal field theories, we prove that topological defect operators and the Verlinde loop operators are different descriptions of the same operators.

Vortex Loop Operators, M2-branes and Holography

We construct vortex loop operators in the three-dimensional N = 6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena. These disorder loop operators are specified by a vortex-like singularity for the scalar and gauge fields along a one dimensional curve in spacetime. We identify the 1/2, 1/3 and 1/6 BPS loop operators in the Chern-Simons theory with excitations of M-theory corresponding to M2-branes ending along a curve on the boundary of AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k. The vortex loop operators can also be given a purely geometric description in terms of regular "bubbling" solutions of eleven dimensional supergravity which are asymptotically AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k.

A supermatrix model for N=6 super Chern-Simons-matter theory

We construct the Wilson loop operator of N=6 super Chern-Simons-matter which is invariant under half of the supercharges of the theory and is dual to the simplest macroscopic open string in AdS_4 x CP^3. The Wilson loop couples, in addition to the gauge and scalar fields of the theory, also to the fermions in the bi-fundamental representation of the U(N) x U(M) gauge group. These ingredients are naturally combined into a superconnection whose holonomy gives the Wilson loop, which can be defined for any representation of the supergroup U(N|M). Explicit expressions for loops supported along an infinite straight line and along a circle are presented. Using the localization calculation of Kapustin et al. we show that the circular loop is computed by a supermatrix model and discuss the connection to pure Chern-Simons theory with supergroup U(N|M).

Gauge Theory Loop Operators and Liouville Theory

We propose a correspondence between loop operators in a family of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories on S^4 -- including Wilson, 't Hooft and dyonic operators -- and Liouville theory loop operators on a Riemann surface. This extends the beautiful relation between the partition function of these N=2 gauge theories and Liouville correlators found by Alday, Gaiotto and Tachikawa. We show that the computation of these Liouville correlators with the insertion of a Liouville loop operator reproduces Pestun's formula capturing the expectation value of a Wilson loop operator in the corresponding gauge theory. We prove that our definition of Liouville loop operators is invariant under modular transformations, which given our correspondence, implies the conjectured action of S-duality on the gauge theory loop operators. Our computations in Liouville theory make an explicit prediction for the exact expectation value of 't Hooft and dyonic loop operators in these N=2 gauge theories. The Liouville loop operators are also found to admit a simple geometric interpretation within quantum Teichmuller theory as the quantum operators representing the length of geodesics. We study the algebra of Liouville loop operators and show that it gives evidence for our proposal as well as providing definite predictions for the operator product expansion of loop operators in gauge theory.

The structure of n-point functions of chiral primary operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills at one-loop

We develop a compact representation of the one-loop n-point functions of all chiral primary operators in planar SU(N), N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in terms of tree-level disk correlation functions and the scalar one-loop box integral. As a check, known results for all four-point functions and for n-point extremal and near-extremal correlators are rederived. The result is then used to evaluate explicitly a selection of five and six-point functions. Our findings suggest that a general one-loop five-point function may be represented through the minimal four-point and five-point functions of weight two operators.

Probing N=4 SYM With Surface Operators

In this paper we study surface operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We compute surface operator observables, such as the expectation value of surface operators, the correlation function of surface operators with local operators, and the correlation function of surface operators with Wilson and 't Hooft loops. The calculations are performed using three different realizations of surface operators, corresponding respectively to the gauge theory path integral definition, the probe brane description in AdS_5xS^5 and the "bubbling'' supergravity description of surface operators. We find remarkable agreement between the different calculations performed using the three different realizations.

Wilson loops in 3-dimensional N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theory and their string theory duals

We study Wilson loops in the three-dimensional N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena, that is conjectured to be dual to type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3. We construct loop operators in the Chern-Simons theory which preserve 1/6 of the supercharges and calculate their expectation value up to 2-loop order at weak coupling. The expectation value at strong coupling is found by constructing the string theory duals of these operators. For low dimensional representations these are fundamental strings, for high dimensional representations these are D2-branes and D6-branes. In support of this identification we demonstrate that these string theory solutions match the symmetries, charges and the preserved supersymmetries of their Chern-Simons theory counterparts.

On the D3-brane description of some 1/4 BPS Wilson loops

Recently it has been proposed that Wilson loops in high-dimensional representations in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (or multiply wrapped loops) are described by D-branes in AdS_5 x S^5, rather than by fundamental strings. Thus far explicit D3-brane solutions have been only found in the case of the half-BPS circle or line. Here we present D3-brane solutions describing some 1/4 BPS loops. In one case, where the loop is conjectured to be given by a Gaussian matrix model, the action of the brane correctly reproduces the expectation value of the Wilson loop including all 1/N corrections at large λ. As in the corresponding string solution, here too we find two classical solutions, one stable and one not. The unstable one contributes exponentially small corrections that agree with the matrix model calculation.

1/4 BPS circular loops, unstable world-sheet instantons and the matrix model

The standard prescription for computing Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondence in the large coupling regime and tree-level involves minimizing the string action. In many cases the action has more than one saddle point as in the simple example studied in this paper, where there are two 1/4 BPS string solutions, one a minimum and the other not. Like in the case of the regular circular loop the perturbative expansion seems to be captured by a free matrix model. This gives enough analytic control to extrapolate from weak to strong coupling and find both saddle points in the asymptotic expansion of the matrix model. The calculation also suggests a new BMN-like limit for nearly BPS Wilson loop operators.

On different actions for the vacuum of bosonic string field theory

We study a family of kinetic operators in string field theory describing the theory around the closed string vacuum. Those operators are based on the analytical classical solutions of Takahashi and Tanimoto and are analogous to the pure ghost action usually referred to as "vacuum string field theory," but are much more general, and less singular than the pure ghost operator. The closed string vacuum is related to the D-brane vacuum by large, singular, gauge transformations or field redefinition, and all those different representations are related to each other by small gauge transformations. We try to clarify the nature of this singular gauge transformation. We also show that by choosing the Siegel gauge one recovers the propagator proposed in hep-th/0207266 that generates closed string surfaces.

A New Type of Loop Equations

We derive a new form of loop equations for light-like Wilson loops. In bosonic theories those loop equations close only for straight light-like Wilson lines. In the case of N=1 in ten dimensions they close for any light-like Wilson loop. Upon dimensional reduction to N=4 SYM in four dimensions, these loops become exactly the chiral loops which can be evaluated semiclassically, in the strong coupling limit, by a minimal surface in anti de-Sitter space. We show that the AdS calculation satisfies those loop equations. We also find a new fermionic loop equation derived from the gauge theory fermionic equation of motion.
