Nuclear force with LapH smearing

The nuclear forces are determined by combining the HAL QCD method and a new type of source smearing technique. The new smearing is a projection to a space spanned by the lowest-lying eigenvectors of the free Laplacian operator on a lattice, which enables efficient calculation of hadron correlators at an affordable cost by utilizing the hadron-level momentum conservations. We find that this new approach reduces the statistical and systematic errors in the resultant nuclear forces.

$ΛΛ$ and N$Ξ$ interactions from Lattice QCD near the physical point

The $S$-wave $ΛΛ$ and $N Ξ$ interactions are studied on the basis of the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations close to the physical point ($m_π\simeq 146{\rm{MeV}}$ and $m_K \simeq 525{\rm{MeV}}$). Lattice QCD potentials in four different spin-isospin channels are extracted by using the coupled-channel HAL QCD method and are parametrized by analytic functions to calculate the scattering phase shifts. The $ΛΛ$ interaction at low energies shows only a weak attraction, which does not provide a bound or resonant dihyperon. The $NΞ$ interaction in the spin-singlet and isospin-singlet channel is most attractive and lead the $NΞ$ system near unitarity. Relevance to the strangeness=$-2$ hypernuclei as well as to two-baryon correlations in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions is also discussed.

Lattice QCD and baryon-baryon interactions: HAL QCD method

In this article, we review the HAL QCD method to investigate baryon-baryon interactions such as nuclear forces in lattice QCD. We first explain our strategy in detail to investigate baryon-baryon interactions by defining potentials in field theories such as QCD. We introduce the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave functions in QCD for two baryons below the inelastic threshold. We then define the potential from NBS wave functions in terms of the derivative expansion, which is shown to reproduce the scattering phase shifts correctly below the inelastic threshold. Using this definition, we formulate a method to extract the potential in lattice QCD. Secondly, we discuss pros and cons of the HAL QCD method, by comparing it with the conventional method, where one directly extracts the scattering phase shifts from the finite volume energies through the Lüscher's formula. We give several theoretical and numerical evidences that the conventional method combined with the naive plateau fitting for the finite volume energies in the literature so far fails to work on baryon-baryon interactions due to contaminations of elastic excited states. On the other hand, we show that such a serious problem can be avoided in the HAL QCD method by defining the potential in an energy-independent way. We also discuss systematics of the HAL QCD method, in particular errors associated with a truncation of the derivative expansion. Thirdly, we present several results obtained from the HAL QCD method, which include (central) nuclear force, tensor force, spin-orbital force, and three nucleon force. We finally show the latest results calculated at the nearly physical pion mass, $m_π\simeq 146$ MeV, including hyperon forces which lead to form $ΩΩ$ and $NΩ$ dibaryons.

Partial wave decomposition on the lattice and its applications to the HAL QCD method

The approximated partial wave decomposition method to the discrete data on a cubic lattice, developed by C. W. Misner, is applied to the calculation of $S$-wave hadron-hadron scatterings by the HAL QCD method in lattice QCD. We consider the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function for the spin-singlet $Λ_c N$ system calculated in the $(2+1)$-flavor QCD on a $(32a~\mathrm{fm})^3$ lattice at the lattice spacing $a\simeq0.0907$ fm and $m_π\simeq 700$ MeV. We find that the $l=0$ component can be successfully extracted by Misner's method from the NBS wave function projected to $A_1^+$ representation of the cubic group, which contains small $l\ge 4$ components. Furthermore, while the higher partial wave components are enhanced so as to produce significant comb-like structures in the conventional HAL QCD potential if the Laplacian approximated by the usual second order difference is applied to the NBS wave function, such structures are found to be absent in the potential extracted by Misner's method, where the Laplacian can be evaluated analytically for each partial wave component. Despite the difference in the potentials, two methods give almost identical results on the central values and on the magnitude of statistical errors for the fits of the potentials, and consequently on the scattering phase shifts. This indicates not only that Misner's method works well in lattice QCD with the HAL QCD method but also that the contaminations from higher partial waves in the study of $S$-wave scatterings are well under control even in the conventional HAL QCD method. It will be of interest to study interactions in higher partial wave channels in the HAL QCD method with Misner's decomposition, where the utility of this new technique may become clearer.

The HAL QCD potential in $I=1$ $ππ$ system with the $ρ$ meson bound state

In this paper, we investigate the HAL QCD potential in the $I=1$ $ππ$ scattering using the hybrid method for all-to-all propagators, in which a propagator is approximated by low-eigenmodes and the remaining high-eigenmode part is stochastically estimated. To verify the applicability of the hybrid method to systems containing quark creation$/$annihilation contributions such as the $ρ$ meson, we calculate the $I=1$ $ππ$ potential with the 2+1 flavor gauge configurations on $16^3 \times 32$ lattice at the lattice spacing $a \approx 0.12$ fm and $(m_π,m_ρ) \approx (870, 1230)$ MeV, in which the $ρ$ meson appears as a deeply-bound state. While we find that the naive stochastic evaluations for quark creation$/$annihilation contributions lead to extremely large statistical fluctuations, additional noise reduction methods enable us to obtain a sufficiently precise potential, which shows a strong attractive force. We also confirm that the binding energy and $k^3 \cot δ$ obtained from our potential are roughly consistent with an existing $ρ$ meson bound state, within a large systematic error associated with our calculation, whose possible origin is also discussed.

Fate of the Tetraquark Candidate Zc(3900) from Lattice QCD

The possible exotic meson $Z_{c}(3900)$, found in $e^+ e^-$ reactions, is studied by the method of coupled-channel scattering in lattice QCD. The interaction among $πJ/ψ$, $ρη_{c}$ and $\bar{D}D^{*}$ channels is derived from (2+1)-flavor QCD simulations at $m_π=410$-$700$ MeV. The interaction is dominated by the off-diagonal $πJ/ψ$-$\bar{D}D^{*}$ and $ρη_{c}$-$\bar{D}D^{*}$ couplings, which indicates that the $Z_{c}(3900)$ is not a usual resonance but a threshold cusp. Semi-phenomenological analyses with the coupled-channel interaction are presented to confirm this conclusion.

Lüscher's finite volume test for two-baryon systems with attractive interactions

For the attractive interaction, the Lüscher's finite volume formula gives the phase shift at negative squared moment $k^2<0$ for the ground state in the finite volume, which corresponds to the analytic continuation of the phase shift at $k^2<0$ in the infinite volume. Using this fact, we reexamine behaviors of phase shifts at $k^2 <0$ obtained directly from plateaux of effective energy shifts in previous lattice studies for two nucleon systems on various volumes. We have found that data, based on which existences of the bound states are claimed, show singular behaviors of the phase shift at $k^2<0$, which seem incompatible with smooth behaviors predicted by the effective range expansion. This, together with the fake plateau problem for the determination of the energy shift, brings a serious doubt on existences of the $NN$ bound states claimed in previous lattice studies at pion masses heavier than 300 MeV.

Towards Lattice QCD Baryon Forces at the Physical Point: First Results

Lattice QCD calculations of baryon forces are performed for the first time with (almost) physical quark masses. $N_f = 2+1$ dynamical clover fermion gauge configurations are generated at the lattice spacing of $a \simeq 0.085$ fm on a $(96 a)^4 \simeq (8.2 {\rm fm})^4$ lattice with quark masses corresponding to $(m_π, m_K) \simeq (146, 525)$ MeV. Baryon forces are calculated using the time-dependent HAL QCD method. In this report, we study $ΞΞ$ and $NN$ systems both in $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ channels, and the results for the central and tensor forces as well as phase shifts in the $ΞΞ$ $(^1S_0)$ channel are presented.

$ΩΩ$ interaction from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD

We investigate the interaction between $Ω$ baryons in the $^1S_0$ channel from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD simulations. On the basis of the HAL QCD method, the $ΩΩ$ potential is extracted from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave function calculated on the lattice by using the PACS-CS gauge configurations with the lattice spacing $a\simeq 0.09$ fm, the lattice volume $L\simeq 2.9$ fm and the quark masses corresponding to $m_π\simeq 700$ MeV and $m_Ω\simeq 1970$ MeV. The $ΩΩ$ potential has a repulsive core at short distance and an attractive well at intermediate distance. Accordingly, the phase shift obtained from the potential shows moderate attraction at low energies. Our data indicate that the $ΩΩ$ system with the present quark masses may appear close to the unitary limit where the scattering length diverges.

Coupled channel approach to strangeness S = -2 baryon-bayron interactions in Lattice QCD

The baryon-baryon interactions with strangeness S = -2 with the flavor SU(3) breaking are calculated for the first time by using the HAL QCD method extended to coupled channel system in lattice QCD. The potential matrices are extracted from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions obtained by the 2+1 flavor gauge configurations of CP-PACS/JLQCD Collaborations with a physical volume of 1.93 fm cubed and with m_pi/m_K = 0.96, 0.90, 0.86. The spatial structure and the quark mass dependence of the potential matrix in the baryon basis and in the SU(3) basis are investigated.

First results of baryon interactions from lattice QCD with physical masses (1) -- General overview and two-nucleon forces --

We present the lattice QCD studies for baryon-baryon interactions for the first time with (almost) physical quark masses. $N_f = 2+1$ gauge configurations are generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action with stout smearing on the lattice of $(96 a)^4 \simeq (8.2 {\rm fm})^4$ with $a \simeq 0.085$ fm, where $m_π\simeq 146$ MeV and $m_K \simeq 525$ MeV. Baryon forces are calculated from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) correlation functions using the time-dependent HAL QCD method. In this report, we first give the general overview of the theoretical frameworks essential to the physical point calculation of baryon forces. We then present the numerical results for the two-nucleon central and tensor forces in $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ coupled channel and the central force in $^1S_0$ channel. In particular, a clear signal is obtained for the tensor force.

Medium-heavy nuclei from nucleon-nucleon interactions in lattice QCD

On the basis of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method with the nucleon-nucleon forces obtained from lattice QCD simulations, the properties of the medium-heavy doubly-magic nuclei such as 16^O and 40^Ca are investigated. We found that those nuclei are bound for the pseudo-scalar meson mass M_PS ~ 470 MeV. The mass number dependence of the binding energies, single-particle spectra and density distributions are qualitatively consistent with those expected from empirical data at the physical point, although these hypothetical nuclei at heavy quark mass have smaller binding energies than the real nuclei.

Charmed Tetraquarks Tcc and Tcs from Dynamical Lattice QCD Simulations

Charmed tetraquarks $T_{cc}=(cc\bar{u}\bar{d})$ and $T_{cs}=(cs\bar{u}\bar{d})$ are studied through the S-wave meson-meson interactions, $D$-$D$, $\bar{K}$-$D$, $D$-$D^{*}$ and $\bar{K}$-$D^{*}$, on the basis of the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations with the pion mass $m_π \simeq $410, 570 and 700 MeV. For the charm quark, the relativistic heavy quark action is employed to treat its dynamics on the lattice. Using the HAL QCD method, we extract the S-wave potentials in lattice QCD simulations, from which the meson-meson scattering phase shifts are calculated. The phase shifts in the isospin triplet ($I$=1) channels indicate repulsive interactions, while those in the $I=0$ channels suggest attraction, growing as $m_π$ decreases. This is particularly prominent in the $T_{cc} (J^P=1^+,I=0)$ channel, though neither bound state nor resonance are found in the range $m_π =410-700$ MeV. We make a qualitative comparison of our results with the phenomenological diquark picture.

Spin-2 $NΩ$ Dibaryon from Lattice QCD

We investigate properties of the $N$(nucleon)-$Ω$(Omega) interaction in lattice QCD to seek for possible dibaryon states in the strangeness $-3$ channel. We calculate the $NΩ$ potential through the equal-time Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave function in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with the renormalization group improved Iwasaki gauge action and the nonperturbatively $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improved Wilson quark action at the lattice spacing $a\simeq 0.12$ fm on a (1.9 fm)$^{3}\times$ 3.8 fm lattice. The $ud$ and $s$ quark masses in our study correspond to $m_π= 875(1)$ MeV and $m_{K}= 916(1)$ MeV. At these parameter values, the central potential in the S-wave with the spin 2 shows attractions at all distances.By solving the Schrödinger equation with this potential, we find one bound state whose binding energy is $18.9(5.0)(^{+12.1}_{-1.8})$ MeV, where the first error is the statistical one, while the second represents the systematic error.

Asymptotic behavior of Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions for multi-particles in quantum field theories

We derive asymptotic behaviors of the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function at large space separations for systems with more than 2 particles in quantum field theories. To deal with $n$-particles in the center of mass flame coherently, we introduce the Jacob coordinates of $n$ particles and then combine their $3(n-1)$ coordinates into the one spherical coordinate in $D=3(n-1)$ dimensions. We parametrize on-shell $T$-matrix for $n$-particle system of scalar fields at low energy, using the unitarity constraint of the $S$-matrix. We then express asymptotic behaviors of the NBS wave function for $n$ particles at low energy, in terms of parameters of $T$-matrix, and show that the NBS wave function carry the information of $T$-matrix such as phase shifts and mixing angles of the $n$-particle system in its own asymptotic behavior, so that the NBS wave function can be considered as the scattering wave of $n$-particles in quantum mechanics. This property is one of the essential ingredients of the HAL QCD scheme to define "potential" from the NBS wave function in quantum field theories such as QCD. Our results, together with an extension to systems with spin 1/2 particles, justify the HAL QCD's definition of potentials for 3 or more nucleons(baryons) in terms the NBS wave functions.

Cutoff effects on lattice nuclear forces

We present a lattice QCD study for the cutoff effects on nuclear forces. Two-nucleon forces are determined from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave functions using the HAL QCD method. Lattice QCD simulations are performed employing N_f = 2 clover fermion configurations at three lattice spacings of a = 0.108, 0.156, 0.215 fm on a fixed physical volume of L^3 x T = (2.5 fm)^3 x 5 fm with a large quark mass corresponding to m_π= 1.1 GeV. We observe that while the discretization artifact appears at the short range part of potentials, it is suppressed at the long distance region. The cutoff dependence of the phase shifts and scattering length is also presented.

Equation of State for Nucleonic Matter and its Quark Mass Dependence from the Nuclear Force in Lattice QCD

Quark mass dependence of the equation of state (EOS) for nucleonic matter is investigated, on the basis of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method with the nucleon-nucleon interaction extracted from lattice QCD simulations. We observe saturation of nuclear matter at the lightest available quark mass corresponding to the pseudoscalar meson mass ~ 469 MeV. Mass-radius relation of the neutron stars is also studied with the EOS for neutron-star matter from the same nuclear force in lattice QCD. We observe that the EOS becomes stiffer and thus the maximum mass of neutron star increases as the quark mass decreases toward the physical point.

Construction of energy-independent potentials above inelastic thresholds in quantum field theories

We construct energy independent but non-local potentials above inelastic thresholds, in terms of Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions defined in quantum field theories such as QCD. As an explicit example, we consider NN --> NN + n pi scattering processes for n=0,1,2,.... We show an existence of energy-independent coupled channel potentials with a non-relativistic approximation, where momenta of all particles are small compared with their own masses. In the case of two-body inelastic scatterings such as Lambda Lambda --> Lambda Lambda, N Xi, Sigma Sigma, on the other hand, we show that energy-independent potentials can be constructed without relying on non-relativistic approximations. We also propose a method to extract these potentials using time-dependence of general correlation functions.

Exploring Three-Nucleon Forces in Lattice QCD

Three-nucleon forces (3NF) are investigated from two-flavor lattice QCD simulations. We utilize the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function to determine two-nucleon forces (2NF) and 3NF in the same framework. As a first exploratory study, we extract 3NF in which three nucleons are aligned linearly with an equal spacing. This is the simplest geometrical configuration which reduces the huge computational cost of calculating the NBS wave function. Quantum numbers of the three-nucleon system are chosen to be (I, J^P)=(1/2,1/2^+) (the triton channel). Lattice QCD simulations are performed using N_f=2 dynamical clover fermion configurations at the lattice spacing of a = 0.156 fm on a 16^3 x 32 lattice with a large quark mass corresponding to m_π= 1.13 GeV. We find repulsive 3NF at short distance in the triton channel. Several sources of systematic errors are also discussed.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from Imaginary-time Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter Wave Function on the Lattice

Imaginary-time Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function is introduced to extend our previous approach for hadron-hadron interactions on the lattice. Scattering states of hadrons with different energies encoded in the NBS wave-function are utilized to extract non-local hadron-hadron potential. "The ground state saturation", which is commonly used in lattice QCD but is hard to be achieved for multi-baryons, is not required. We demonstrate that the present method works efficiently for the nucleon-nucleon interaction (the potential and the phase shift) in the 1S_0 channel.

Nuclear physics from lattice simulations

We review recent lattice QCD activities with emphasis on the impact on nuclear physics. In particular, the progress toward the determination of nuclear and baryonic forces (potentials) using Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave functions is presented. We discuss major challenges for multi-baryon systems on the lattice: (i) signal to noise issue and (ii) computational cost issue. We argue that the former issue can be avoided by extracting energy-independent (non-local) potentials from time-dependent NBS wave functions without relying on the ground state saturation, and the latter cost is drastically reduced by developing a novel "unified contraction algorithm." The lattice QCD results for nuclear forces, hyperon forces and three-nucleon forces are presented, and physical insights are discussed. Comparison to results from the traditional Luescher's method is given, and open issues to be resolved are addressed as well.

Two-Baryon Potentials and H-Dibaryon from 3-flavor Lattice QCD Simulations

Baryon-baryon potentials are obtained from 3-flavor QCD simulations with the lattice volume L ~ 4 fm, the lattice spacing a ~ 0.12 fm, and the pseudo-scalar-meson mass M_ps =469 - 1171 MeV. The NN scattering phase shift and the mass of H-dibaryon in the flavor SU(3) limit are extracted from the resultant potentials by solving the Schrodinger equation. The NN phase shift in the SU(3) limit is shown to have qualitatively similar behavior as the experimental data. A bound H-dibaryon in the SU(3) limit is found to exist in the flavor-singlet J^P=0^+ channel with the binding energy of about 26 MeV for the lightest quark mass M_ps = 469 MeV. Effect of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking on the H-dibaryon is estimated by solving the coupled-channel Schrodinger equation for Lambda Lambda - N Xi - Sigma Sigma with the physical baryon masses and the potential matrix obtained in the SU(3) limit: a resonant H-dibaryon is found between Lambda Lambda and N Xi thresholds in this treatment.

Unified contraction algorithm for multi-baryon correlators on the lattice

We propose a novel algorithm for calculating multi-baryon correlation functions on the lattice. By considering the permutation of quarks (Wick contractions) and color/spinor contractions simultaneously, we construct a unified index list for the contraction where the redundancies in the original contraction are eliminated. We find that a significant reduction in the computational cost of correlators is achieved, e.g., by a factor of 192 for $^3$H and $^3$He nuclei, and a factor of 20736 for the $^4$He nucleus, without assuming isospin symmetry. A further reduction is possible by exploiting isospin symmetry, and/or interchange symmetries associated with sink baryons, if such symmetries exist. Extensions for systems with hyperons are presented as well.

Bound H-dibaryon in Flavor SU(3) Limit of Lattice QCD

The flavor-singlet H-dibaryon, which has strangeness -2 and baryon number 2, is studied by the approach recently developed for the baryon-baryon interactions in lattice QCD. The flavor-singlet central potential is derived from the spatial and imaginary-time dependence of the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave function measured in N_f=3 full QCD simulations with the lattice size of L = 2, 3, 4 fm. The potential is found to be insensitive to the volume, and it leads to a bound H-dibaryon with the binding energy of 30 - 40 MeV for the pseudo-scalar meson mass of 673 - 1015 MeV.

Exploring Three Nucleon Forces in Lattice QCD

We study the three nucleon force in Nf=2 dynamical clover fermion lattice QCD, utilizing the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave function of the three nucleon system. Since parity-odd two nucleon potentials are not available in lattice QCD at this moment, we develop a new formulation to extract the genuine three nucleon force which requires only the information of parity-even two nucleon potentials. In order to handle the extremely expensive calculation cost, we consider a specific three-dimensional coordinate configuration for the three nucleons. We find that the linear setup is advantageous, where nucleons are aligned linearly with equal spacings. The lattice calculation is performed with 16^3 x 32 configurations at β=1.95, m_π=1.13 GeV generated by CP-PACS Collaboration, and the result of the three nucleon force in triton channel is presented.

Baryon-Baryon Interactions in the Flavor SU(3) Limit from Full QCD Simulations on the Lattice

We investigate baryon-baryon (BB) interactions in the 3-flavor full QCD simulations with degenerate quark masses for all flavors. The BB potentials in the orbital S-wave are extracted from the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions measured on the lattice. We observe strong flavor-spin dependences of the BB potentials at short distances. In particular, a strong repulsive core exists in the flavor-octet and spin-singlet channel (the 8_s representation), while an attractive core appears in the flavor singlet channel (the 1 representation). We discuss a relation of such flavor-spin dependence with the Pauli exclusion principle in the quark level. Possible existence of an H-dibaryon resonance above the Lambda-Lambda threshold is also discussed.

An ultimate goal will be to see how dynamical quarks affect the picture outlined with an earlier quenched study using overlap fermions, namely, that it is the a_0(1450), not the a_0(980), which is the lowest $\bar{q}q$ isovector scalar state.

Strangeness and glue in the nucleon from lattice QCD

We study the strangeness contribution to nucleon matrix elements using Nf=2+1 dynamical clover fermion configurations generated by the CP-PACS/JLQCD collaboration. In order to evaluate the disconnected insertion (DI), we use the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtraction from the hopping parameter expansion which reduces the off-diagonal noises in the stochastic method. Furthermore, we find that using many nucleon sources for each configuration is effective in improving the signal. Our results for the quark contribution to the first moment <x>_q in the DI, and the strangeness magnetic moment show that the statistical errors are under control with these techniques. We also study the gluonic contribution to the nucleon using the overlap operator to construct the gauge field tensor, F_{mu,nu}. The application to the calculation of first moment, <x>_G, gives a good signal in quenched lattice QCD.

Meson-baryon couplings and the $F/D$ ratio from QCD sum rules

Motivated by the recent work on the calculation of the $πNN$ coupling constant using QCD sum rule beyond the chiral limit, we construct the corresponding sum rules for the couplings, $ηNN$, $πΞΞ$, $ηΞΞ$, $πΣΣ$ and $ηΣΣ$. In constructing the $η$-baryon sum rules, we use the second moment of the $η$ wave function, which we obtain from the pion wave function after SU(3) rotation. In the SU(3) symmetric limit, we can identify the term responsible for the $F/D$ ratio in the OPE, which after the sum rule analysis gives $F/D\sim 0.2$, a factor of 3 smaller than from other studies. We also present a qualitative analysis including the SU(3) breaking terms.
