MeV scale leptonic force for cosmic neutrino spectrum and muon anomalous magnetic moment

Characteristic patterns of cosmic neutrino spectrum reported by the IceCube collaboration and long-standing inconsistency between theory and experiment in muon anomalous magnetic moment are simultaneously explained by an extra leptonic force mediated by a gauge field with a mass of the MeV scale. With different assumptions for redshift distribution of cosmic neutrino sources, diffuse neutrino flux is calculated with the scattering between cosmic neutrino and cosmic neutrino background through the new leptonic force. Our analysis sheds light on a relation among lepton physics at the three different scales, PeV, MeV, and eV, and provides possible clues to the distribution of sources of cosmic neutrino and also to neutrino mass spectrum.

Effects on sinθ_{12} from perturbation of the neutrino mixing matrix with the partially degenerated neutrino masses

We consider a situation where the leading-order neutrino mass matrix is derived by a theoretical ansatz and reproduces the experimental data well, but not completely. Then, the next stage is to try to fully reproduce the data by adding small perturbation terms. In this paper, we obtain the analytical method to diagonalize the perturbed mass matrix and find a consistency condition that parameters should satisfy not to change \sinθ_{12} much. This condition could cause parameter tuning and plays a crucial role in relating the added perturbation terms with the prediction analytically, in particular, for the case of the partially quasi-degenerated neutrino masses (m_2 \simeq m_1) where neutrinoless double beta decays would be observed in the phase-II experiments.

Mind the gap on Icecube: Cosmic neutrino spectrum and muon anomalous magnetic moment in the gauged L_μ - L_τ model

The energy spectrum of cosmic neutrinos, which was recently reported by the IceCube collaboration, shows a gap between 400 TeV and 1 PeV. An unknown neutrino interaction mediated by a field with a mass of the MeV scale is one of the possible solutions to this gap. We examine if the leptonic gauge interaction L_μ - L_τ can simultaneously explain the two phenomena in the lepton sector: the gap in the cosmic neutrino spectrum and the unsettled disagreement in muon anomalous magnetic moment. We illustrate that there remains the regions in the model parameter space, which account for both the problems. Our results also provide a hint for the distance to the source of the high-energy cosmic neutrinos.

CKM matrix and flavor symmetries

Following the way proposed recently by Hernandez and Smirnov, we seek possible residual symmetries in the quark sector with a focus on the von Dyck groups. We begin with two extreme cases in which both $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ or only $θ_{13}$ are set to zero. Then, cases where all the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa parameters are allowed to take nonzero values are explored. The $Z_7$ symmetry is favorable to realize only the Cabibbo angle. On the other hand, larger groups are necessary in order to be consistent with all the mixing parameters. Possibilities of embedding the obtained residual symmetries into the $Δ(6N^2)$ series are also briefly discussed.

Is θ_{13}^{PMNS} correlated with θ_{23}^{PMNS} or not?

By postulating the relation θ_{23} \simeq 45^\circ + ηθ_{13}, we seek preferable correction terms to tri-bi-maximal mixing and discuss their origins. Global analyses of the neutrino oscillation parameters favor η=\pm 1/\sqrt{2}; this corresponds to the relation found by Edy, Frampton, and Matsuzaki some years ago in the context of a T^\prime flavor symmetry. In contrast, the results of the ν_μdisappearance mode reported by the T2K and Super-Kamiokande collaborations seem to prefer η=0, which gives an almost maximal θ_{23}. We derive a general condition for ensuring θ_{23} \simeq 45^\circ + ηθ_{13} and find that the condition is complicated by the neutrino masses and CP violating phases. We investigate the condition under simplified environments and arrive at several correction terms to the mass matrices. It is found that the obtained correction terms can arise from flavor symmetries or one-loop radiative corrections.

Partial mass-degeneracy and spontaneous CP violation in the lepton sector

Inspired by the small mass-squared difference measured in the solar neutrino oscillation experiments and by the testability, we suggest that a limit of the partial mass degeneracy, in which masses of the first two generation fermions are degenerate, may be a good starting point for understanding the observed fermion mass spectra and mixing patterns. The limit indicates the existence of a two-dimensional rotation symmetry, such as $O(2)$, $D_N$ and so on, in flavor space of the first two generations. We propose simple models for the lepton sector based on $D_N$ and show that the models can successfully reproduce the experimental data without imposing unnatural hierarchies among dimensionless couplings, although at least $10\%$ tuning is necessary in order to explain a large atmospheric mixing. It is especially found that the $Z_2$ subgroup of the $D_N$ symmetry plays an important role in understanding the smallness of the electron mass and $θ_{13}^{\rm PMNS}$. We also discuss testability of the models by the future neutrinoless-double-beta-decay experiments and cosmological observations.

Q_6 flavor symmetry model for the extension of the minimal standard model by three right-handed sterile neutrinos

The extension of the minimal standard model by three right-handed sterile neutrinos with masses smaller than the electroweak scale (nuMSM) is discussed in a Q_6 flavor symmetry framework. The lightness of the keV sterile neutrino and the near mass degeneracy of two heavier sterile neutrinos are naturally explained by exploiting group properties of Q_6. A normal hierarchical mass spectrum and an approximately mu-tau symmetric mass matrix are predicted for three active neutrinos. Nonzero theta_{13} can be obtained together with a deviation of theta_{23} from the maximality, where both mixing angles are consistent with the latest global data including T2K and MINOS results. Furthermore, the tiny active-sterile mixing is related to the mass ratio between the lightest active and lightest sterile neutrinos.

Vanishing Minors in the Neutrino Mass Matrix from Abelian Gauge Symmetries

Augmenting the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos allows for an anomaly-free gauge group extension G_max = U(1)_(B-L) x U(1)_(L_e-L_mu) x U(1)_(L_mu-L_tau). While simple U(1) subgroups of G_max have already been discussed in the context of approximate flavor symmetries, we show how two-zero textures in the right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrix can be enforced by the flavor symmetry, which is spontaneously broken very economically by singlet scalars. These zeros lead to two vanishing minors in the low-energy neutrino mass matrix after the seesaw mechanism. This study may provide a new testing ground for a zero-texture approach: the different classes of two-zero textures with almost identical neutrino oscillation phenomenology can in principle be distinguished by their different Z' interactions at colliders.

Dark Matter in Inert Triplet Models

We study the inert triplet models, in which the standard model (SM) is extended to have a new SU(2)L triplet scalar (Y=0 or 2) with an Z2 symmetry. We show that the neutral component of the triplet can be a good dark matter candidate. In particular, for the hypercharge Y=0 triplet model, the WMAP data favors the region where the dark matter mass is around 5.5 TeV, which is also consistent with the direct detection experiments. In contrast, for the Y=2 model, although dark matter with its mass around 2.8 TeV is allowed by WMAP, it is excluded by the direct detection experiments because the spin-independent cross section is enhanced by the Z mediated tree-level scattering process.

Finite quantum corrections to the tribimaximal neutrino mixing

We calculate finite quantum corrections to the tribimaximal neutrino mixing pattern V_TB in three generic classes of neutrino mass models. We show that three flavor mixing angles can all depart from their tree-level results described by V_TB, among which θ_12 is most sensitive to such quantum effects, and the Dirac CP-violating phase can radiatively arise from two Majorana CP-violating phases. This theoretical scheme offers a new way to understand why θ_13 is naturally small and how three CP-violating phases are presumably correlated.

Getting at large theta_13 with almost maximal theta_23 from tri-bimaximal mixing

We introduce a small correction term, δM_ν, in the neutrino sector and examine whether a large θ_13 and an almost maximal θ_23 can simultaneously be obtained starting from the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. It is found that one can easily gain θ_13 \simeq 10^\circ, which is favored by the recent T2K experiment, by taking account of the enhancement due to the degeneracy among three neutrino masses. We also find that (δM_ν)_22=(δM_ν)_33 is a key condition for θ_23 \simeq 45^\circ.

Large θ_13 from finite quantum corrections in quasi-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum

We study finite quantum corrections for several well known neutrino mixing matrices and find that it is hard to account for the large value of θ_13 recently reported by T2K and MINOS. To nicely reproduce all experimentally favored neutrino mixing angles and masses, we propose a new neutrino mixing pattern. We also demonstrate a simple realization by slightly extending the standard model to illustrate the quantum corrections.

Non-zero θ_13 in models for hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum

We introduce three right-handed Majorana neutrinos and combine the type-I seesaw and inert doublet mechanisms. The resultant (active) neutrino mass matrix is divided into rank=1 and =2 parts with different energy scales. The different energy scales are reduce to different mass scales in the hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum. We apply this scheme to both the inverted and normal hierarchy cases and find a correlation between the smallest mixing angle (θ_13) and the lightest neutrino mass.

Signatures of Dark Matter in Inert Triplet Models

In this talk, we will review the signatures of dark matter in two inert triplet models. For the first model with the hypercharge Y=0, the dark matter mass around 5.5 TeV is favored by both the WMAP data and the direct detection. In contrast, for the second model of Y=2, it is excluded by the direct detection experiments although dark matter with its mass around 2.8 TeV is allowed by WMAP.

Intrinsic Deviation from the Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing in a Class of A_4 Flavor Models

It is well known that the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern V_0 can be derived from a class of flavor models with the non-Abelian A_4 symmetry. We point out that small corrections to V_0, which are inherent in the A_4 models and arise from both the charged-lepton and neutrino sectors, have been omitted in the previous works. We show that such corrections may lead the 3 \times 3 neutrino mixing matrix V to a non-unitary deviation from V_0, but they cannot result in a nonzero value of θ_13 or any new CP-violating phases. Current experimental constraints on the unitarity of V allow us to constrain the model parameters to some extent.

Leptogenesis with Friedberg-Lee Symmetry

We consider the $μ-τ$ symmetric Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry for the neutrino sector and show that a specific FL translation leads to the tribimaximal mixing pattern of the Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (MNS) matrix. We also apply the symmetry to the type-I seesaw framework and address the baryon asymmetry of the universe through the leptogenesis mechanism. We try to establish a relation between the net baryon asymmetry and CP phases included in the MNS matrix.

mu-tau symmetry in Zee-Babu model

We study the Zee-Babu two-loop neutrino mass generation model and look for a possible flavor symmetry behind the tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. We find that there probably exists the mu-tau symmetry in the case of the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, whereas there may not be in the inverted hierarchy case. We also propose a specific model based on a Froggatt-Nielsen-like $Z_5$ symmetry to naturally accomplish the mu-tau symmetry on the neutrino mass matrix for the normal hierarchy case.

Testing Flavor Symmetries by B-Factory

Predictions of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters are investigated in detail in recent predictive models which are based on low-energy non-abelian discrete family symmetries. Some of the models can already be excluded at the present precision of the determination of the CKM parameters, while some of them seem to survive. We find that to make the uncertainties in the predictions comparable with the assumed uncertainties of $\sim 1^{\circ}$ and $\sim 2^{\circ}$ in $ϕ_2$ and $ϕ_3$, respectively, at about 50 inverse atto barn achieved at a feature B factory, it is necessary to reduce the uncertainties in the quark masses, especially that of the strange quark mass by more than 60%.

Constraints on the Timeon Model

The timeon model recently proposed by Friedberg and Lee has a potential problem of flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) if the mass of the timeon is small. In order to avoid, we introduce a small dimensionless parameter to suppress FCNCs. Even in this case, we find that the timeon mass must be larger than 151 GeV to satisfy all the constraints from processes involving FCNCs in the quark sectors. We also extend the timeon model to the lepton sector and examine the leptonic processes.

S_3 Flavor Symmetry and Leptogenesis

We consider leptogenesis in a minimal S_3 extension of the standard model with an additional Z_2 symmetry in the leptonic sector. It is found that the CP phase appearing in the neutrino mixing is the same as that for the CP asymmetries responsible for leptogenesis. Because of the discrete S_3 x Z_2 flavor symmetries, the CP asymmetries are strongly suppressed. We therefore assume that the resonant enhancement of the CP asymmetries takes place to obtain a realistic size of baryon number asymmetry in theuniverse. Three degenerate right-handed neutrino masses of O(10) TeV are theoretically expected in this model.
