Characterizing scale dependence of effective diffusion driven by fluid flows

We study the scale dependence of effective diffusion of fluid tracers, specifically, its dependence on the Péclet number, a dimensionless parameter of the ratio between advection and molecular diffusion. Here, we address the case that length and time scales on which the effective diffusion can be described are not separated from those of advection and molecular diffusion. For this, we propose a new method for characterizing the effective diffusivity without relying on the scale separation. For a given spatial domain inside which the effective diffusion can emerge, a time constant related to the diffusion is identified by considering the spatio-temporal evolution of a test advection-diffusion equation, where its initial condition is set at a pulse function. Then, the value of effective diffusivity is identified by minimizing the $L_\infty$ distance between solutions of the above test equation and the diffusion one with mean drift. With this method, for time-independent gyre and time-periodic shear flows, we numerically show the scale dependence of the effective diffusivity and its discrepancy from the classical limits that were derived on the assumption of the scale separation. The kinematic origins of the discrepancy are revealed as the development of the molecular diffusion across flow cells of the gyre and as the suppression of the drift motion due to a temporal oscillation in the shear.

Output Series-Parallel Connection of Passivity-Based Controlled DC-DC Converters: Generalization of Asymptotic Stability

The series-paralleling technique of dc-dc converters is utilized in various domains of electrical engineering for improved power conversion. Previous studies have proposed and classified the control schemes for the series-paralleled converters. However, they have several restrictions and lack diversity. The purpose of this paper is to propose passivity-based control (PBC) for the diverse output series-parallel connection of dc-dc converters. It is proved that the output series-paralleled converters regulated by PBC are asymptotically stable. The output series-paralleled converters are numerically simulated to confirm the asymptotic stability. PBC is shown to maintain the stability of the output series-paralleled converters with diverse circuit topologies, parameters, and steady-states. The result of this paper theoretically supports the numerical and experimental considerations in the previous studies and justifies the further extension of the series-parallel connection.

Security of Power Packet Dispatching Using Differential Chaos Shift Keying

This paper investigates and confirms one advantageous function of a power packet dispatching system, which has been proposed by authors' group with being apart from the conventional power distribution system. Here is focused on the function to establish the security of power packet dispatching for prohibiting not only information but also power of power packet from being stolen by attackers. For the purpose of protecting power packets, we introduce a simple encryption of power packets before sending them. Encryption scheme based on chaotic signal is one possibility for this purpose. This paper adopts the Differential Chaos Shift Keying (DCSK) scheme for the encryption, those are partial power packet encryption and whole power packet encryption.

Logic-Memory Device of a Mechanical Resonator

We report multifunctional operation based on the nonlinear dynamics in a single microelectromechanical system (MEMS) resonator. This Letter focuses on a logic-memory device that uses a closed loop control and a nonlinear MEMS resonator in which multiple states coexist. To obtain both logic and memory operations in a MEMS resonator, we examine the nonlinear dynamics with and without control input. Based on both experiments and numerical simulations, we develop a novel device that combines an OR gate and memory functions in a single MEMS resonator.

Counter operation in nonlinear micro-electro-mechanical resonators

This paper discusses a logical operation of multi-memories that consist of coupled nonlinear micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) resonators. A MEMS resonator shows two coexisting stable states when nonlinear responses appear. Previous studies addressed that a micro- or nano-electrical-mechanical resonator can be utilized as a mechanical 1-bit memory or mechanical logic gates. The next phase is the development of logic system with coupled multi-resonators. From the viewpoint of application of nonlinear dynamics in coupled MEMS resonators, we show the first experimental success of the controlling nonlinear behavior as a 2-bit binary counter.
